Towns have always been my favorite thing in JRPGs. My favorite kind of town would have something in it that does have main story quest and battling in it, like going through a mansion dungeon, lab dungeon, or something like a big building dungeon with a hotel theme or something.
This reminds me of FF7 Nibelheim, where the mansion has enemies and stuff in it. I didn't even consider it for some reason, but it also pretty great! This happens few times in classic FF now that I think about it... Interesting to think about. Thanks for the comment :)
I can’t believe I spaced that one! It’s the best moment in the game! And to think CT is literally my favorite game…. At least you’ve got good taste lmao
This was so well put together. Conjuring up strong nostalgic feelings throughout as you discussed many towns and aspects to games, both experienced and not, that I greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and get it out there for us to enjoy!
Colony 9 is peak comfy... it has such homely vibes, and the music outside of town gives off pure "the adventure begins, but nothing bad has happened yet" energy. I remember taking my time here, knowing that something bad was bound to happen if I progressed the story, which would trigger a chain of events and lead me away from that cozy town and area. And oh boy, that cutscene hit me right in the feels when I eventually got to it. It made all that time I spent at Colony 9 even more meaningful, as I didn't regret not spending more time there. Another town I love is Pallet Town. I think the idea behind its tiny size was that to a kid, their home town kinda "feels" this small. At least to me. Like growing up, all that was really relevant to me was my house, my friend's house, and school. But as soon as you head out and explore, suddenly towns seem bigger, and you start "seeing" shops and other buildings as you need to use them. Then whenever you come back home, you get that sense of nostalgia from the music and seeing your mother, and everything feels small and cozy again. Great video, I love this topic.
Love Colony 9 so much, you’re spot on with that! Pallet Town is also so good, it’s so quaint and small, like everyone who lives there knows each other on a personal level. I’m glad you like the video, thanks a ton c:
The need for a reprive from normal gameplay reminds me of when modded maps for things like Doom or Halo fail to understand that sometimes theres empty corridors and rooms to help pace out the gameplay, and give the mind a moment to fill in the blanks, and instead fill everything with encounter after encounter.
Okay, fine, I can't even help but hit that subscribe button. This is just... ugh, it speaks to me. So many places in Legend of Mana just feel... wondrous, and solemn, haunting, and cheerful, warm and delightful. Even... your Home, a little town all of your own, in Legend of Mana... when you go inside and the music sort of turns down, and you can hear the crackling of the fire in the fire place... it is a home. And what a home it is. EDIT: Oh, I saw your FFT, and that reminded me. The intro to Final Fantasy Advance, and sort of Prologue, in the Town of Saint Ivalice.... wow did they nail the vibe of that place!
I’ve seen Legend of Mana a few times now, I’ll have to check that out! Sounds super comfy! Also need to check out Tactics Advance, too many good games out there lol tysm for the nice comment :)
Great video I really enjoyed the towns in Trails in the Sky FC has always given me a cozy vide while having a nice family vibe do to how often the dialogue changes making it feel like a small country town where everybody knows each other and I think that's neat.
I've got a friend who's like a devil on my shoulder constantly trying to get me to play the Trails series. lol maybe when game releases slow down and I have more free time I can try the series out, it looks really good and cozy
@@CinnamonLyn don't push yourself to play all of them, I think its perfectly acceptable to just play the Sky trilogy because it has a level of heart, comfort, and authenticity I think most of later games don't quite measure up to with their more plot-driven natures and attempts to appeal to a broader audience. Its really only the Sky games that have that Grandia or Lunar type of feel to them. But yeah, god, they're fucking masterpieces. Rolent and Bose in particular are so lovely, and the fact that you come back to them so many different times under so many different circumstances just makes you feel the growth of the characters and the sheer depth of the world each time. aaaaaaaa~~!!! its great
Another richscrisps banger! The Valkryie Profile portion singlehandidly did more to pique my interest in the game than anything Ive heard about it in years.
Hi Hachi! Thanks so much, a lot of people who talk about Valkyrie Profile tend to lament about it's structure rather than the work itself, but it's a really fascinating game and I wanted to highlight it :D
This isn’t a criticism but an observation. The creator sounds like the ‘library guy’ to me. Also happy to hear someone else feel the same way about VP’s towns and down time.
Another excellent RichCrisps joint. I know you're known (at least to me) as the Armored Core Gal but this was a very nice, relaxing video; I'd absolutely love love love to hear you divulge on other topics that interest you, gaming or otherwise. Your videos have the same comfortable, "friend talking to me" feeling that I get from creators like Lute, while also being informative as well! Whatever video comes next, whether it's AC's 4th or 5th gen or even something else, I'll be looking forward to it!
I'll have you know I squealed when I read this comment at work! tysm!! I wanted this video to be a change of pace, considering what happens in AC I was like "I need a chill out video" lol also good recommend on Lute, hadn't heard of them before this comment but I've been watching their X4 video and it rules
Tales is a blind spot for me, but I loved the 15ish hours I put into Abyss! If only I had infinite time... Then I could play every good game ever made! lol thanks for the comment ^_^
@@CinnamonLynI relate haha, so many games to play but so little time (and energy too in my case!). There are a lot of nice towns in the series if you ever do have a chance 😊 Something to look forward to.
Great video. When I was young Shining Force II was my favorite game together with SF1. By the way Shining Force CD on the Sega CD was great too. It was a remake of SF 1&2 from Sega Game gear.
Shining Force was the first strategy game I'd ever played via the 360 genesis collection, and it was incredibly charming and novel to me. I've heard good things about Sword of Haija, I always forget that it and it's prequel were remade on the Sega CD. I'll probably play CD eventually, seems pretty neat c:
I’ll never forget the disappointment of beating the Lich in the original Final Fantasy, only to return to Melmond, still desolate and dieing. I was like, I did the thing!! But, that goes to show how invested you can get to a game and its towns
I should play any FF before VI, just to see context for how the series formed. That and Dragon Quest are huge blind spots for me… one of these days lol
LMAO tysm!! When I was recording this, that Fortnite pop up was absolutely unintended, but I was dying laughing so I had to make it some kind of bit LOL

Thats the point of the video, that even when the story has moved past the town, it's still really important to the whole experience. Didn't mean to imply that the towns and the story were mutually exclusive from each other
What game towns would yall say change the most? Like maybe after game events or seasons or time played characters have new dialogue, positions or scenery changes.
I'm so sorry.... I didn't like Chrono Cross when I tried it like 9ish years ago. Maybe with a fresh perspective I'd me more into it. Its first town is incredible though, the song there is max cozy.

I thought about showing off Treno here, but Dali fit the beginning and the criteria of a chill town better I think. FF IX has such stellar towns, the game kinda owns
It’s Vanquish, a 3rd person shooter with slow down and slide mechanics. It’s one of Platinums best games, absolutely recommended if you want a really frenetic action game :D
