I thoroughly enjoyed "The Cater Street Hangman". Sterling performances all 'round, particularly Peter Egan, Keeley Hawes and Eoin McCarthy. Beautifully staged, expertly directed and compellingly written. No one does period drama better than the Brits!
True, we just fall short in many ways, but our period drama's and dramas in general, are something we truly excel at! An abundance of great actors and everyone else responsible for these great productions, we do have.
This was a magnificent production, beautiful acting, fantastic magnetism between Eoin McCarthy and Keely Hawes. The sets the costumes, the supporting and even background actors were all in perfect character.
@@landang7906 I began watching British movies in the 70's, my Teens. It took me while, however I'm so glad I stuck with it. Subtitles are ok, only they block the views of which I also love to observe, furnishings, clothes, Tea Settings, etc. Hang in there, you'll get it with time.😊😊

I’m either reading or listening to every Anne Perry Thomas & Charlotte Pitt book right now. I’m on The Hyde’s Park hangman and I can’t get enough of these books. I just love how she writes and a lot of times I see things that could be the same as right now! I wish the whole series was a show!!!
When the Arts and Entertainment Network first started in late 1990s this was their first 'original production'. I remember it well as I was a big fan of the author of the Pitt and Charlotte books. I think this was one of the very few programs they broadcast before they stopped being A and E and just became a repository for old US TV shows that no one wanted to watch anyway.
Ah, that explains it. There seems to be a cookie-cutter Canadian feel about this movie. The way the detective scolds and insults the main character like she's a child, and a jealous woman ends up being the murderess-- very much a Lifetime American feel to it. Pure English productions never seemed to have a problem casting an independent b-tch as a main character. American movies always need a helpless "waif" that needs a daddy type know it all "hero". Now it's gone full circle and I can't stand watching kung-fu fighting assassins in corsets and crinoline, but anyway.... The British shows for the UK are grittier, too. Those little girls singing in the doorway, for example-- in that time period, they would have been actual prostitutes. The detective's poverty diatribe here was missing an important piece of the picture-- poor children often became prostitutes well before the age of 10. It wasn't until women's suffrage that child prostitution was outlawed in the UK and US, and the age of consent was raised to more normal levels, because men wanted to be able to purchase little girls for seggs, and made sure the laws were in their favor to do so.
The plot is not crystal clear though. I thought only women with some tarnished reputation would be killed as "God's retribution" in the mind of the killer, but Sarah Corde was a good woman. Why was she killed? Simply because she was in the vicarage? I can understand for Charlotte, she was arguing with the vicar on his strict beliefs and that ired his wife Martha. But there's no rhyme or reason for Sarah to be killed.
I remember this when on TV. I tried to find a dvd or bluray but unable to. Thank you for uploading. I'll be watching it loads now that I've found it here. Love Keeky Hawes and Ioan

Nobody can match the British period movies, there is just nothing that comes close. I got hooked over 50 years ago and I can't get enough.
Have a look for Wuthering Heights/ and Rebecca with Laurence Olivier,black and white.Not the remakes.😊

It kind of helps that Anne Perry took part in the actual murder of her friends mother, an insane mind has obviously produced some great writing
