Inspector Wexford - Wolf to the Slaughter

  • Taken from the VHS box: An anonymous note. A straightforward case, so Detective Chief Inspector Wexford and his grim-faced assistant, Mike Burden, assume.
The man's name is Smith, his victim, Anita Margolis. Investigations reveal that wealthy, flighty and immoral, perhaps she had invited the crime.
After all, nice girls don't bring lovers home in the afternoon. And nice girls keep their money in safe places.
But you can't have a murder without a body. Or can you?

British shows rely more on intelligent, character-driven plots; American garbage just focuses on selling you something, usually sex and the "necessity" of gun ownership.

@rdlewis3616, it's that the tech generations are all sounding and looking like avatars. It's very strange and interesting to study the mass movements over the decades. The early Cary grant, Gary Cooper, Barbara stanwich movies they all had that Hollywood brit kind of affectation to their speech. It goes on and on. The California orange county girls snobby snark permeates still. The biggest change I notice in serials and movies came when Miami vice ditched orchestral scores for pop music releases and the intro of digital imagery taking over special effects and more. Too too much in your face and less to the imagination. I love the old analog and continuous tone mediums over digital for viewing and listening.
Thanks for the upload of these wonderful mystery greats.

Of the many things I like about this series is that no one is shirtless exposing their abs, no one is a former Green Beret with ''special skills'' and an arsenal of weapons in a secret closet. The series is based on crime detection and drama, we aren't going to see swat teams and red dot lasers on guns.
It doesn't boil down to a jiu jitsu fight with half a dozen karate experts.

Just now reading the novel & having seen this video before l was struck by Rendell’s description of the glass sculpture (p.18) on Inspector Wexford’s desk as “indigo blue.” My recall was the glass in this film was green. And so it is. Memory may wobble at my age - so l was pleased to find it hadn’t in the instance. A very small point. But it’s fun to chart the faithfulness of book to film. Also Rendell describes Wexford as “corpulent,” an adjective l would NEVER apply to the late George Baker!

Even if you're a qualified psychologist who is actually in practice (which I very much doubt), you still don't know enough about the character even to make any kind of diagnosis, let alone label him. To me he seems a fairly typical, dedicated artist out of touch with anything outside his art. Let's leave it at that without any amateur psychology.

The viewer doesn't have to be a psychiatrist to see that his behavior is similar to many people who are autistic or have an obsessive/compulsive diagnosis. Just because the guy is an artist doesn't mean he has to behave so erratically.

This is such a fun episode! The artist is a parody of me, my art, introversion and confused housekeeping. Then there're the retro customs, the banter ("You ought to leave your lungs to science"), and Russell Hunter's preciously clever sparring exchange during the interview, even chiding the detective... Russell Hunter, King of the Oppressed Character. All had me laughing out loud and understanding other people's view of artists. So convincing, so natural. What a hoot. Thanks, Paul

Most artists are slightly eccentric (and delightfully so). Also they can be very vague. Rupert is no exception. But if this description also applies to you, please don't worry or be offended. Artists live on a different plane to other mortals. I for one wouldn't change that state of affairs for the world. Artists are unique and must be cherished, while their work delights the eye of the beholder.

At 1:09:10 Wexford says Monkey Matthews might be lonely. I don't know whether it was intentional (probably it was) but that actor was famously Lonely (the snitch) in the gritty Callan TV series starring Edward Woodward as David Callan, an agent of a state secret service dealing with internal security threats to the United Kingdom. Lonely (Monkey Matthews) was his snitch.

I've seen all of these at least once if not more and I'm planning to see them in order again now! I'm in my70's , but don't mind dramas with all the cursing and gunfights , but I never got into a lot of the most popular and long running American detective /police shows! I've loved everything from NYPD Blue, Hill St. Blues , the old and new Hawaii 5-0 and Blue Bloods just to name a very few and the Law & Order franchise is one of my all-time favorites each seen too many times to count over the years,so I enjoy a wide variety having just watched "The Mayor of Kingstown" which I have to admit was ALMOST a little too much for me at times!
I get Brit Box and Acorn and love a lot of the British detective shows, but I think I've watched "Vera" the most and I don't think I've seen many guns pulled out around her! It's Sat. night and I'll get back to another episode of" Det Wexford ".
