Inspector Wexford - A Guilty Thing Surprised

  • The following description of this story is taken from the reverse side of the VHS:
    Elizabeth Nightingale seemed a happily married woman with many friends and few enemies. Yet, when her body is discovered in a dark wood, Chief Inspector Reg Wexford and his valued sidekick, Inspector Burden, unearth a whole battallion of suspects with their own resentments, their own private hatreds, their own jealous passions. Only the astute, persistent - almost psychic - perceptions of human frailty lead Wexford and Burden to the dark, yet obvious, conclusion that there lurks a very cunning killer waiting to be brought to justice.

    I have seen so many of the actors from here in the old Midsomer Murders series when John Nettles Chief Inspector Barnaby. I see that a lot in the English TV series a lot of the same actors over and over again you can actually see them age through the years

      Yes, but in fact Americans use and recycle a lot of their actors too. If you watch carefully you’ll see .Hollywood actors showing up again and again in various parts across many different productions over many years.

      They are all RSC and the National. John Nettle's wife Joyce is a casting director for the National Theater, she worked on Midsomer with him and knows absolutely everyone. So they get one great classical thespian in every episode, from Bernard Hepton to Simon McBurney to Judy Parfitt.

      You mean "down pat", and I would agree that Rendell was very astute in picking out human foibles with her characterisations.
      I wish American schools would teach and reinforce actual English, not this street slang that seems to be ubiquitous in the 21st century. It makes communication between classes and cultures increasingly difficult. 😞

      @@msmltvcktl sometimes I use the modern patois, especially when it doesn’t upset the rules of grammar. The urban dictionary is often a referential friend. ;) My favorite character in pulp fiction (the movie) is honey bunny (Amanda Plummer). The description of her in the screenplay: it is impossible to define, just by observation, her wealth, status or class.

    • @msmltvcktl
      @msmltvcktl 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't understand it, regardless. I am aware of the urban "dictionary", but it holds no value to me, either as a person or as a writer. Most likely, that's due to the fact that I'm presumed to be half literate and fluent in ebonics because of an unfortunate genetic shortcoming. 😞

    • @msmltvcktl
      @msmltvcktl 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be fair, "ebonics" is neutral in comparison to the more racially charged term "AAVE" for one very important reason: the word 'vernacular'.
      Rooted as it is in the Latin 'vernaculus', meaning "related to household slaves", one would be correct in considering the term "African American vernacular English" to be the long form of "black slave English". 😳
      And that, my friend, is terribly racist terminology embraced by people ignorant of linguistic origins and meanings.

The titular character is also probe to quoting Wordsworth, but he's a barrister (an "old bailey hack") well known for never pleading guilty, his ever-present cheroots, a love for Chateau Thames Embankment (cheap red wine), and taking mostly legal aid cases.

    Thank you sooo much for this upload. I’m a mad fan of Ruth Rendell, particularly the Wexford chronicles. There’s rarely a quiet moment in the books of ‘Barbara Vine’ Of course, I love these too, but I think Wexford will always be a favourite detective of mine.
    It’s amazing to see locations that fit quite well into the books. We can picture Mike and Reg in the little cafe, see the traffic passing buildings hundreds and hundreds of years old....I’m Australian and I doubt I’ll get to England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 unless I win lotto, so the scenery is amazing. Also, there’s a real attention to detail, and a faithful adherence to to quite mundane items mentioned in the books....Mikes widowed, the kids are fighting etc. But homage is allowed when you see that coat. It immediately reminded us of all the times we read what a snappy dresser he was.

    Lord Byron Poetry Excerpt from the first canto of Hunter
    "So much he soar'd beyond, or sunk beneath, The men with whom he felt condemn'd to breathe, And long'd by good or ill to separate Himself from all who shared his mortal state. His mind abhorring this had fix'd her throne Far from the world, in regions of her own:"

      It's beautiful. Incomprehensible that the poetry of George Gordon Byron is so little known and read.

      @@mfjdv2020 He died at the age of 36. Wiki bio says: The figure of the Byronic hero pervades much of his work, and Byron himself is considered to epitomize many of the characteristics of this literary figure. His philosophy was more durably influential in continental Europe than in England; Friedrich Nietzsche admired him, and the Byronic hero was echoed in Nietzsche's superman.
      The Byronic hero presents an idealized, but flawed character whose attributes include: great talent; great passion; a distaste for society and social institutions; a lack of respect for rank and privilege (although possessing both); being thwarted in love by social constraint or death; rebellion; exile; an unsavory secret past; arrogance; overconfidence or lack of foresight; and, ultimately, a self-destructive manner. These types of characters have since become ubiquitous in literature and politics. He desperately tried to hide his bisexuality.

    Knowing Wordsworth's life, I have to say that when the childhood separation of this brother and sister was revealed, I did rather think I knew what had happened. Still a very good episode, however, very well acted by all involved.

    Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !"
    Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ."
    Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
    Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
    Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
    Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
    Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
    Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?"
