My heart still aches 42 years years after seeing this movie! Jane Seymour was the most beautiful creature, and still is! Christopher Reeve was so young and gorgeous, and my feelings of sadness are deepened, knowing the tragedy that followed. The casting was perfect! Thank you putting this video together. You did an amazing work!

One of the coolest things about the movie is how he fell in love with her face in the photo. She was obviously looking at something, and reacting to it when the photo was taken. We find out later that what she was looking at was him. So he was seeing her love for him in the photo without being aware of it. So well-written.
There is a story behind the photo. When Richard turns around to see the photo that is in fact the 1st time Reeve does see the photo and that is his actual reaction. He told the director that the scene needed to be just perfect and the only way that it could be is if he saw the photo for the 1st time. So when Reeves entered the area where the photo was, The crew had the photo covered and when he turned around the curtain was being pulled away.
Somewhere in Time has been my favorite movie since it came out in 1980. After 43 years, I still cry at the end. Plus my favorite music. Best movie ever.
Years and years ago, I was watching the Johnny Carson show one night. Jane Seymour was a guest. During their conversation Johnny paused, looking directly at Jane and said, " you're one of the most beautiful women in this world". As I remember, she seemed to blush and quietly said thank you.

Later that night my wife ended up sitting with her husband at a blackjack table. Jane was filming on the island and became ill. She looked great no makeup in a swimsuit!
Did you know that they were actually in love for real ? I read it somewhere, they were going to be together, for real, but there was a change of plan, as Christopher s previous lady came back on the scene saying that she was expecting his child, so he went back to her. - So that's enough to have you in tears! Strange story here. So I’m older almost 50 and I must have seen this movie when it came out in the 80’s. I don’t remember watching it. Fast forward almost 20 years and I have my first child. My partner and I searched for baby names as you do and we settled on Collier. We loved the name and it fit our baby boy. Two years later my partner came to me with the name McKenna for the little girl we were expecting. A few years later I’m watching some random cable channel and this movie was on. I was shocked 🤯 to say the least when I realized we’d named our children the main characters of this movie. It still freaks me out and Collier is 20 and McKenna will be 17 next week. My maiden sir name was Collier, my father's full name was Roy James Richard Collier, so almost the same as the Character in the film, Chris Reeve was one of my favourite actors. Its deeply tragic what happened to him. So sad. This is my favourite film, My other favourite film is Titanic. Not just because there are simalarities between the two films, but just because they just happen to both be my favourite films. Also, another one of my favourite dramatisations is The Thorn Birds mini series, and Robinson is also in that film, acting as a priest. Faye.
@Joseph Wilson Another sad fact. Chris knew that the horse he was going to ride had an injury but used the horse in the competition anyway and I think that's why the horse did what it did. Very sad what happened to him. He'll always be missed. His wife was so heart broken that when she found out she had cancer she refused treatments so their young song lost both parents. Like the movie I like to think think they're back together again.
I absolutely love this movie. The score really grabs your heart. Beautifully written at a time when Mr. Barry was in emotional pain. I get goosebumps every time I watch it and in tears by the end. I've noticed most people either love it or hate it. Not really any middle ground. Thanks for the video.
This film is an absolute masterpiece! I've loved it since it was released, wasn't aware that it had grown so much in popularity but I can see why it has and I'm glad that so many others have grown to appreciate it.
The movie was a big hit when it was shown internationally. For crazy reasons, it came and went quietly in the USA. Most of us that love this movie saw it later on video or HBO. I watched it for the 1st time on HBO in 1982.
Sadly I think one of the reasons it did so poorly at the box office was because Christopher Reeves had been typecast as the invincible Superman, and people didn't want to see him in a role where he was very vulnerable.
As a child that came into awareness in the 1980s this film holds a special place in my heart forever as the ultimate romantic drama. Rest in peace Christopher Reaves.
This was my first husband's favorite film. I found it too sad during his life, and I still feel the same way now. I literally cannot watch it without crying over my loss of Keith. If I knew we could and would be together again, I would try to imitate the Christopher Reeve character. Maybe we'll meet again after I die, though I'm not eager to do so.
Awesome movie. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour are amazing, but its the older Elise (Susan French) delivering the one line that is the hook of the movie. I believe her only line, but she makes it count. "Come back to me."
I've been to the filming locations so many times. I grew up in Northern Michigan. It's a stunning locale that just begs to be used for a film. It's a shame more movies aren't filmed there.
Sadly, this movie really does get to me ..as did '#RemainsOfTheDay'. And #JohnBarry scores tend to be brilliantly evocative.✌️ I do feel like a fool, though, being moved by this kind of thing.
Chris Reeve, during an interview said when he flew his private plane and would visit different areas of USA, he was asked most often NOT about Superman but Somewhere in Time! He was shocked and pleased that this movie meant so much to so many people and I have to say, Chris Reeve was a real superman in that people who have been paralyzed are now walking thanks to research done from his trust fund for medical research in that type injury!

One little piece of trivia is: the day the “penny” scene was filmed, Christopher Reeve learned he was going to be a father for the first time with his then partner, Gae Exton.
It was the reason why Jane Seymour found out why they could never be together. Chris and Jane fell madly in love while making this film but it was a love that could never be. They both became long-time friends because of their magical connection though.
Whenever I need a good cry, I just watch the last 10 minutes of this movie. First time I ever saw it, I was 7 years old...43 now, this movie has stuck with me ever since.

My great grandmother was born on Mackinac Island, my great grandfather often did maintenance at The Grand Hotel. My family and myself were actually on the island when this movie was being filmed summer of 79, unfortunately I was six moths old at the time so I can't tell you much about that trip. For me this was an unexpected addition to your collection of films, very nice! I could watch your videos all day!
I first saw this when I was about 6 or 7 and cried my heart out. Eventually after several years I managed to get it on dvd and cd. Breaks my heart every time I watch it. The score is absolutely fantastic.

I was doing a tourist thing back in the mid 1980's and that included a trip to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, the famed shopping stop for the movie folks. While in one of the stores, I looked across the room and saw Jane Seymour at one of the counters. I so wanted to approach her and thank her for her performance in "Somewhere In Time". However, between being shy and and also polite I just could not work up the nerve to do so. I've regretted it to this day. My favorite scene in the movie is at the end when she screams out "Richard" and runs to his embrace. That's never happened to me and at 78 years, I know it never will. I still love the movie. A trivia note about the soundtrack, It was only on the album charts at Billboard for 2 weeks, peaking at #187, but it sold well over a million copies and earned a "Platinum Award".
I understand that fear, Jim. I had it, too. For some reason, on the occasions when I had chances to meet as well as have private conversations with famous people, I overcame my fear, did it, anyway. Although I was shaking with fear, could barely say 2 intelligible words when I met John Travolta, he was so warm, so genuine, I managed to calm down enough to be able to think straight then have a short, pleasant conversation with him.
The penny in Richard's pocket probably was not put there by Robinson. Earlier in the film Richard is preparing himself to go back and discovers there is loose change in that little extra pocket. He empties it but we know from doing laundry that pennies always stay deep in pockets until being washed out. Also, F.W. Robinson had gone back some years earlier than Richard and not likely the same year he traveled back. It is my feeling that yes, he was a time traveler himself as well. That would really be the only way he could know so much about Elise and her career. If he had the coin in his possession and was conscience of it he would have broken his own time travel trance. The question you never ask is what about the watch? At the beginning of the film Elise, an aged old woman gives a pocket watch to Richard and says to him "Come back to me..." She then leaves and passes away later that night. When Richard goes back in time he takes the watch with him and Elise admiring it's beauty asks him where he got it. He responds "It was a gift". Elise is holding the watch when Richard is thrust back into the present after seeing the modern penny and thus allowing her to keep it for 60+ years so she can give it to him again. This makes the watch a time travel enigma having never been manufactured in past or present and just existing.
I am convinced that the penny was left there by the previous owner using it as a costume who then dropped it at a thrift shop where Richard purchased it.

André, ever since I first saw the movie, I came out of the cinema asking myself and my mates: «What about the watch? Where did it came from in the first place? She gives it to him, then he brings it to the past and so she gets it from him and she keeps it. I concluded that is the time-object paradox that seems to appear or take place in most of time travelling stories or movies. At that time I had more examples, though, so sorry I dont remember them just now, but if I do, I'll come back to tell you
This is magic, the film, the music, the cast.. it’s all very special. The music is hauntingly beautiful and I remember hearing it as a child for the first time, it had such a tremendous impact on me, years later as an adult I heard it at my job and dropped everything I was doing to run and see what music my boss had placed in our stereo. At the time it was rare that anyone would have had an actual “cassette tape” of the soundtrack, I was shocked but borrowed and copied it. Whenever I played it at work people would drift off into a reverie or share deep stories about their lives. It was as if it had the power to unlock people’s minds, tear down inhibitions. If you love S.I.T., Barry’s music is something that grips you and you can tell when he has composed the soundtrack to other films without being told. Great video facts here.. My late wife loved this movie since we saw it together in 1980. I continue to watch it from time to time in memory of her. But one note about the music: John Barry said, before he passed away, that when he was at a party or with other people, of all the movies he wrote (incl. not only the Bonds but Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa) this is the theme that his friends would most frequently ask him to play (at their piano). The Roger Williams version (on the soundtrack) is wonderful and I picked up the sheet music years ago and still play it today...it's just so darned beautiful.
Yes, I know about that. In an interview in an excellent PBS documentary on Barry he talks about how that score is possibly one of the most emotionally moving of all his works because it was written just after both his parents had passed away. All his scores of that short period, 1980-85 "Out of Africa", "Raise the Titanic", "High road to China" and others are all richly scored, orchestrated and performed and very deeply emotional. I highly recommend a listen to them.

@@jbbevan It was called "John Barry: Moviola" and was aired in the early 90's. I saw it twice then but not since. There was a companion soundtrack released at the same time which you can easily find on Ebay and Amazon. Barry conducted the music themes used in the special himself.

Vincent Valentino Agreed! Somewhere In Time is a rare true cinematic masterpiece. What’s so sad is that if this film was released today (with some minor tweaking to believe it’s a current film)- it would be bashed by critics. The majority of them (especially the more popular ones) are swayed with “incentives”; and this film having a low budget would not “accommodate” most of them.
I loved this movie and of course the music is compelling. I should point out that Rachmaninoff would take exception to giving credit to Barry for writing the score as Rachmaninoff is the name on the sheet music I play called, "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini". You should say Barry adapted the music to be fair to the great Rachmaninoff.
I love this movie so much. It brings me to tears. The possibility that love could be so powerful and moving, is wonderful. I never tire of watching it.
I am definitely one of the people who saw and enjoyed this when it came out. It was a good movie to go see with my wife, and with Chris Reeve in the lead, I knew it couldn't be all bad ... and was completely swept away with a good story well told. And it was cinematographically beautiful.
This will always be a classic, one of the most beautiful casts, writing, directing, acting, costumes, setting, musical score, and the never ending tragedy of a great love lost, the wonder of time travel, and the life in the hereafter, all done with the main characters being the most handsome of men, and the most beautiful of women(yes, she IS, and so he WAS). Particularly powerful was the musical score, the writer being in a rather melancholy mood from the loss of both his parents, it all came together to create the timeless classic. This movie contains a scene I feel is the best acting I have ever seen, by Christopher Reeve, or ANY OTHER ACTOR, was the scene where he accidentally is torn from 1912, back to the present. How Richard tried to go back to 1912, the acting there by Reeves is devastating, probably because many of us would so love to go back in time and right the wrongs we did, that desperate, painful want, but futile desire to be the happiest we have ever been, again. We have all been Richard, at some time, or will be, and like him, will not be able, not in this life. I am reminded of Poe's "The Raven", but this movie affords them a new chance in the hereafter. I can watch this movie hundreds of times and never tire of it. Yes. I have.
Exactly the same as you. Hundreds of times on video taped from tv in the 1980s. Even now Alan when the actress Susan French as the older Elise says “come back to me” at the beginning of the film my eyes fill with tears as I think on a personal note how I would say those words to a real person in my own life. But that will never be.
I just happened to watch this movie today for the very first time. I cried all the way through-I’ve been a big fan of Jane Seymour since East Of Eden,a made-for-tv mini-series from the 1970’s. The chemistry between her and Christoper Reeve is so palpable it makes one blush! 😌

When you start to unpack this movie to its deeper meanings it can get pretty amazing. Having grown up in Michigan and spent some time ( 3X I think) on Mackinac Island it has a special place in my heart. I remember running as a 3-4 years old on the front porch of the grand hotel and being there on the island years later so I can attest to the time shift one can have being there. With no cars allowed on the island it puts you back into the late 1800's. Your frame of reference is suspended. All perfect paraells for the movie. When I first saw this movie I was in a altered state for weeks. The aspects you can come contact within yourself are profound including that when you fall in love with someone what you are experiencing along with them is the profound love that is the basis and connection of all of the universe. Thats the main reason why many have a transendent experience because you are experiencing that which is beyond ones imediate self. This movie capture this point perfectly. This is much more I can say maybe later peace

Coincidentally, this movie came on the TV of a neighbor I had just stopped by to say hello to, and I ended up watching it with her. I have always loved this beautiful movie, hadn't seen it in awhile, and was very happy and excited to see it again. It is classic! The story, the actors, the setting, the music.....everything about it is just wonderful!
The movie became a classic, not because it was sad, but because it was inspirational. It touched the HEART (an organ most critics don't seem to possess). On a personal note....when I came out of the theatre (after see this movie) there was a woman crying, and trying to unlock my car with her key and having no luck of course. So, I said, why don't we try MY key and see if it works. Then, she apologized and said that she had just come from seeing the movie SOMEWHERE IN TIME, still crying profusely, and "It was SO BEAUTIFUL.." She walked off sobbing, looking for her car. True story.
James Cameron also used the plot element from Somewhere in Time in The Terminator, where the woman photographed, at the time of the snapshot, was thinking about the man who fell in love with her when he later saw the picture, and the connection he felt inspired him to travel back in time to meet her.
An unbelievably beautiful movie highly underrated that everyone should see. this is not just a romance, this is a glorious love story. Have a box of tissues.

Something happened to me almost 20 years ago where I think I experienced the closest thing to time travel I'm going to get and the first thing I thought of was this movie. Remember when Christopher Reeves was talking with his friend earlier in the movie and his friend talked about an experience he had in Venice? That whole experience happened to me, only it was in Jamestown and it was just me wandering away from the crowd/people and was just trying to absorb the history. It was part of a family road trip and I had just done a ton of research leading up to it. I'm really into history and in the past had only fallen in love with the history of a place *after* visiting it and then wanting to go back with a fuller understanding but not being able to. I had gone to the library and read a lot of books on Jamestown (the Internet was still new) in the months leading up to this. From what I understand, Jamestown has been built up a lot since then, too, so I'm not sure if I would be able to get to the quiet place I got to before and a place where it was just me and nature (nothing modern, nothing pre-colonists even). So basically what I did was get to a spot near the shore facing west and had the tourists/buildings behind me so I couldn't see or hear them. I just stood there looking at the water, trees, rocks, etc. and imagined I was a colonist just getting off the boat. Something just . . . happened. I can't explain it. There was no "proof" that I time travelled (I didn't see anything different, etc.) but I totally felt something and I felt so . . . connected? Again, I don't know how to explain it. When I did finally walk back, it was in a daze. Whenever I try to explain it, I go back to this movie. Also, it wasn't something I was even trying to do. I was just trying to appreciate the history and take everything in. I didn't even think this kind of thing was possible. Several years later when I learned how to do genealogy research and did have more access to the Internet, I discovered that I am a direct descendant of many, many, many of those first people at Jamestown. I had no idea at the time of the time travel experience that I was even related to those people I had just been researching for months prior to this. I have a ton of bizarre "coincidences" (I don't believe in coincidences), history repeating itself, strange feelings/fears possibly being explained that I discovered in my genealogy research and I am convinced genetic memory is a thing. I have already written so much that I will spare you all those stories (and I'm not sure how much more personal info I want to put out there, lol!) but this one experience at Jamestown is still probably one of the biggest in all of that. I haven't been back since but would jump at an opportunity and do plan on going back someday. I'm not expecting to have the same experience and I am prepared to be disappointed with it being built up but I do want to see how it "feels". Thank you to anyone who read all of that and thank you for listening, lol! I'm not sure how I found this video but was excited about seeing it in my suggested feed and finding other fans of this movie! In my experience, not a lot of people are familiar with this movie (or not as many as there should be) and I was excited to share my story with other fans. I did not know there was a convention, either, perhaps that is another road trip and another chance to share my story? ;) This is probably one of the most realistic feeling time travel movies but I'm not sure if that is because of what happened to me. I really want to rewatch it again now, too! It's one of my parent's favorites which is how I think I even was aware of it in the first place when all of that happened. I wonder what I would have thought if I hadn't seen this movie before my experience? Sorry for all the rambling and apologies if it doesn't make sense, lol!

It has been many months since you wrote it, but if you should see this, I think you would be interested in another fascinating movie (possibly based on actual events) concerning time travel. It is called “Miss Morrison’s Ghosts” and it is easy to locate on TH-cam. I am in my late sixties now, but I first watched it with my mother when I was in high school (or college?). At any rate, it made such an impression on me that I have wanted to see it again ever since, and was delighted to find it on TH-cam a few years ago. Do search for it and watch it, if you have not.

You are not alone. You may have a Past Life Experience that is similar. As do I. I'm not crazy... but I found that there are only certain people that I can share this kind of stuff with. I don't care what anyone thinks... I know what I know. This movie hit me hard as well. The music brings me to tears whenever I hear it. So I know... just like you do... that this present time is not where we belong. It is just soooo wonderful to see a movie like this to help take us back to where we belong. Strange things have happened to me too, too many coincidences, bumping into people who help me along my path, my loved ones who have passed send me signs and I feel connected with certain places as you do. I dream of past lives or places I've never been in this life. I'm 67 now and with the love of my life, although I had to wait for him I knew I would find him and I knew it was him from our first meeting. I feel we were together in another life and destined to be together again. I introduced him to "Somewhere In Time", it was so wonderful to share. Blessings to you.

Anybody else ever wonder where the pocket watch came from? Richard got it from Elise in 1980 when she was old. She got it when he left it in her room in 1912. So where did the watch originate??
I came across the movie by accident one day and fell in love with it. A shame this movie did not get the credit it deserved when it came out. Great acting, and I loved the chemistry between Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve. Jane Seymour never looked more beautiful than in this movie. The movie also had beautiful music, costumes, and scenery. Just a lovely movie!
Filming it on Mackinac Island and at the Grand Hotel was a brilliant idea with their severely limited budget. They didn't need to do any set dressing at all. All they needed to do was put the extras in period clothing. They could shoot it today. If you are a fan of this movie and have the chance you should visit the island. Once you get off of the main street you are back in time.
I was there in 1995. Beautiful, unique and quiet little town (best fudge ever!). If I ever move back to Michigan, I would happily consider living there.

Thank you for reviewing this film. It's not the most mainstream picture, so it's good to see it receiving attention from a popular TH-camr such as yourself. I was totally blindsided by how involved and mesmerizingly romantic Somewhere In Time is, to the point where it's now one of my favorite romance films. The genre can really be hit-or-miss, as at its lowest it can make for some incredibly sappy and maudlin stories. But at its highest, I'm in the film's hands, riding every step along with the on-screen couple.
Somewhere in Time is such a beautiful and tragic story. I was about 10 when I first watched it. I was devastated and angry for them during the penny scene. And more so, when I recalled the beginning scene in the movie, when she first hands him the watch and says, "Come back to me." Elise looked for him too, and died missing him too. I am a mess, every time I watch it. Even more so, since it was one of my favorite uncle's favorite movie. He was very much like Christopher Reeve. He was a total romantic, easy going, completely devoted to my aunt and my cousins. Also tall and slim, broad shoulders, with brown hair, beautiful blue eyes, and a warm smile with a caring and gentle soul. I loved him dearly. We were both very sad when Christopher Reeve passed. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour were born to play these roles. I can't imagine any of the lead actors from the 70's, portraying these characters so authentically. Also, the musical score, to the beautiful costumes, to the choice of locations! This film holds a very special place in my heart. I would love to go to the Grand Hotel some day.
I loved this film. The ending when he accidentally broke his hypnosis broke my heart. I always asked myself, “How could one live after losing your one true love?” I think his character dying was a beautiful blessing.

The Time Travel film craze in the 80s started with Nicholas Myers' "Time After Time" in 1979. However the "Is it you?" scene in this film is among the most beautiful things recorded to American cinema.

A little cheesy sometimes compared to modern movies and Lord knows that they didn't manage to make a good remake of it but I'm glad because the original was pretty darn awesome.

I first saw this in 1982 on HBO, back when they still showed movies. A friend had told me about it. I love Jane Seymour. She was the perfect pick for this role as well as Christopher Reeves. It seems like in the scene where Reeves is removing any modern furniture and coins from his pockets. It appears he's made certain to have removed everything that is of modern time.
@@simonkennedy6116 Ah, I see. Definitely worth having on DVD or Blu-ray, though it is a bit hard to watch now since Reeves is gone. Reminds me of Robin William's beautifully, though tragic, done film "What Dreams May Come", since that one is so strongly emotional now with Robin's passing and that he took his own life (due to the anti-depressant drugs he was on which was found to cause suicidal tendencies), very much like his character in the film.
Both my dad and I loved this movie and the music. I was born in 75, so I probably first saw it as a rental or on cable. My Dad, who I loved dearly, had a rarely talked about experience with his own dad who commited suicide when my dad was 12. It was so rarely talked about that I often forgot about it. One night, when watching Somewhere In Time for the 20th time... I ask my Dad... "If you could go back in time, where would you want to go?" In my youthful naivete, I expect him to say some centuries-long leap to the Old West or something.... But he says without hesitation... "To the day my father committed suicide." Here I am writing this... 25 years later... not sure I ever recovered from that answer.
Thank you for your great review of the movie. I definitely think that James Cameron is a big fan of Somewhere In Time since there is way too many similarities. What made me admire Christopher Reve even more is that he fought for the part to be in Somewhere In Time. His agent turned it down because he wouldn’t have gotten paid enough but Christopher still wanted to be in it. I admired Christopher because he believed that kind of love is possible. What was sad about his passing was to loose such person who fights for what he believes in his professional life and especially his struggles as an individual in his personal life. People with that kind of fight and passion in life is rare.
Somewhere in time has a connection to a Australian children's show which is slightly different to the story but has time travel in the title of this was similar to the movie but very different ending as I remember one other strange thing about the film it was set in the same place where Practical Magic was filmed and I think near to where the Fog was filmed to there's a lighthouse I not to sure if it was original film or the remake?
I watched this film tonight because i met someone very special...we both felt as if we have known each other before. So i suggested that we watch it. This review was very intriguing and it made me appreciate it even. Please keep up the great work. 💕
This movie was doing very well In Hong Kong back then. There was a cinema that showing nothing else but this movie 4 times a day for whole year. To most people here, Reeves is even better known as Richard than its famous role as Superman.
It has always been one of my favorite films since it first came out. John Barry's music is so haunting. I didn't realize his parents died not long before he was asked to compose the score. I visited Mackinac Island with my husband and granddaughter. She and I both loved this movie. Staying at the Grand Hotel and exploring this beautiful island was a truly magical experience! The movie is my all time favorite and I adore the Grand Hotel. ❤️

The music box plays Rachmaninoff but the music theme that everyone loves was written by John Barry who wrote beautiful unforgettable music to other movies also! He said he'd written this theme right after his father died and he was inspired by his missing his father's influence in his life!
My heart still aches 42 years years after seeing this movie! Jane Seymour was the most beautiful creature, and still is! Christopher Reeve was so young and gorgeous, and my feelings of sadness are deepened, knowing the tragedy that followed. The casting was perfect! Thank you putting this video together. One of the coolest things about the movie is how he fell in love with her face in the photo. She was obviously looking at something, and reacting to it when the photo was taken.
We find out later that what she was looking at was him. So he was seeing her love for him in the photo without being aware of it.

There is a story behind the photo. When Richard turns around to see the photo that is in fact the 1st time Reeve does see the photo and that is his actual reaction. He told the director that the scene needed to be just perfect and the only way that it could be is if he saw the photo for the 1st time. So when Reeves entered the area where the photo was, The crew had the photo covered and when he turned around the curtain was being pulled away.
Somewhere in Time has been my favorite movie since it came out in 1980. After 43 years, I still cry at the end. Plus my favorite music. Best movie ever.

Years and years ago, I was watching the Johnny Carson show one night. Jane Seymour was a guest. During their conversation Johnny paused, looking directly at Jane and said, " you're one of the most beautiful women in this world". As I remember, she seemed to blush and quietly said thank you.

Strange story here. So I’m older almost 50 and I must have seen this movie when it came out in the 80’s. I don’t remember watching it. Fast forward almost 20 years and I have my first child. My partner and I searched for baby names as you do and we settled on Collier. We loved the name and it fit our baby boy. Two years later my partner came to me with the name McKenna for the little girl we were expecting. A few years later I’m watching some random cable channel and this movie was on. I was shocked 🤯 to say the least when I realized we’d named our children the main characters of this movie. It still freaks me out and Collier is 20 and McKenna will be 17 next week. My maiden sir name was Collier, my father's full name was Roy James Richard Collier, so almost the same as the Character in the film, Chris Reeve was one of my favourite actors. Its deeply tragic what happened to him. So sad. This is my favourite film, My other favourite film is Titanic. Not just because there are simalarities between the two films, but just because they just happen to both be my favourite films. Also, another one of my favourite dramatisations is The Thorn Birds mini series, and Robinson is also in that film, acting as a priest. Faye.

@Joseph Wilson Another sad fact. Chris knew that the horse he was going to ride had an injury but used the horse in the competition anyway and I think that's why the horse did what it did.
Very sad what happened to him. He'll always be missed. His wife was so heart broken that when she found out she had cancer she refused treatments so their young song lost both parents.
Like the movie I like to think think they're back together again.

I absolutely love this movie. The score really grabs your heart. Beautifully written at a time when Mr. Barry was in emotional pain. I get goosebumps every time I watch it and in tears by the end. The movie was a big hit when it was shown internationally. For crazy reasons, it came and went quietly in the USA. Most of us that love this movie saw it later on video or HBO. I watched it for the 1st time on HBO in 1982.

Sadly I think one of the reasons it did so poorly at the box office was because Christopher Reeves had been typecast as the invincible Superman, and people didn't want to see him in a role where he was very vulnerable.

This was my first husband's favorite film. I found it too sad during his life, and I still feel the same way now. I literally cannot watch it without crying over my loss of Keith. If I knew we could and would be together again, I would try to imitate the Christopher Reeve character. Maybe we'll meet again after I die, though I'm not eager to do so.
Awesome movie. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour are amazing, but its the older Elise (Susan French) delivering the one line that is the hook of the movie. I believe her only line, but she makes it count.

Chris Reeve, during an interview said when he flew his private plane and would visit different areas of USA, he was asked most often NOT about Superman but Somewhere in Time! He was shocked and pleased that this movie meant so much to so many people and I have to say, Chris Reeve was a real superman in that people who have been paralyzed are now walking thanks to research done from his trust fund for medical research in that type injury!

It was the reason why Jane Seymour found out why they could never be together. Chris and Jane fell madly in love while making this film but it was a love that could never be. They both became long-time friends because of their magical connection though.

My great grandmother was born on Mackinac Island, my great grandfather often did maintenance at The Grand Hotel. My family and myself were actually on the island when this movie was being filmed summer of 79, unfortunately I was six moths old at the time so I can't tell you much about that trip. For me this was an unexpected addition to your collection of films, very nice! I could watch your videos all day!
This is one of my favourite films ever. Great music, classy actors and makes you feel like you have actually lived the experience with him.
I first saw this when I was about 6 or 7 and cried my heart out. Eventually after several years I managed to get it on dvd and cd. Breaks my heart every time I watch it. The score is absolutely fantastic.

I was like OMG it’s the music!! I couldn’t believe I remembered the music I heard when I was a child! So impacting.. great stories and sharing every time I played that music at work. I was doing a tourist thing back in the mid 1980's and that included a trip to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, the famed shopping stop for the movie folks. While in one of the stores, I looked across the room and saw Jane Seymour at one of the counters. I so wanted to approach her and thank her for her performance in "Somewhere In Time". However, between being shy and and also polite I just could not work up the nerve to do so. I've regretted it to this day. My favorite scene in the movie is at the end when she screams out "Richard" and runs to his embrace. That's never happened to me and at 78 years, I know it never will. I still love the movie. A trivia note about the soundtrack, It was only on the album charts at Billboard for 2 weeks, peaking at #187, but it sold well over a million copies and earned a "Platinum Award".

I understand that fear, Jim. I had it, too. For some reason, on the occasions when I had chances to meet as well as have private conversations with famous people, I overcame my fear, did it, anyway.
Although I was shaking with fear, could barely say 2 intelligible words when I met John Travolta, he was so warm, so genuine, I managed to calm down enough to be able to think straight then have a short, pleasant conversation with him.

The penny in Richard's pocket probably was not put there by Robinson. Earlier in the film Richard is preparing himself to go back and discovers there is loose change in that little extra pocket. He empties it but we know from doing laundry that pennies always stay deep in pockets until being washed out. Also, F.W. Robinson had gone back some years earlier than Richard and not likely the same year he traveled back. It is my feeling that yes, he was a time traveler himself as well. That would really be the only way he could know so much about Elise and her career. If he had the coin in his possession and was conscience of it he would have broken his own time travel trance. The question you never ask is what about the watch?
At the beginning of the film Elise, an aged old woman gives a pocket watch to Richard and says to him "Come back to me..." She then leaves and passes away later that night. When Richard goes back in time he takes the watch with him and Elise admiring it's beauty asks him where he got it. He responds "It was a gift". Elise is holding the watch when Richard is thrust back into the present after seeing the modern penny and thus allowing her to keep it for 60+ years so she can give it to him again. This makes the watch a time travel enigma having never been manufactured in past or present and just existing.

André, ever since I first saw the movie, I came out of the cinema asking myself and my mates: «What about the watch? Where did it came from in the first place? She gives it to him, then he brings it to the past and so she gets it from him and she keeps it. I concluded that is the time-object paradox that seems to appear or take place in most of time travelling stories or movies. At that time I had more examples, though, so sorry I dont remember them just now, but if I do, I'll come back to tell you

This is magic, the film, the music, the cast.. it’s all very special. The music is hauntingly beautiful and I remember hearing it as a child for the first time, it had such a tremendous impact on me, years later as an adult I heard it at my job and dropped everything I was doing to run and see what music my boss had placed in our stereo. At the time it was rare that anyone would have had an actual “cassette tape” of the soundtrack, I was shocked but borrowed and copied it. Whenever I played it at work people would drift off into a reverie or share deep stories about their lives. It was as if it had the power to unlock people’s minds, tear down inhibitions. If you love S.I.T., Barry’s music is something that grips you and you can tell when he has composed the soundtrack to other films without being told. Great video facts here.. A+ from a fan of the film! So much can be said about this film and it’s impact..👌🏻❤️
My late wife loved this movie since we saw it together in 1980. I continue to watch it from time to time in memory of her. But one note about the music: John Barry said, before he passed away, that when he was at a party or with other people, of all the movies he wrote (incl. not only the Bonds but Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa) this is the theme that his friends would most frequently ask him to play (at their piano). The Roger Williams version (on the soundtrack) is wonderful and I picked up the sheet music years ago and still play it today...it's just so darned beautiful.
Yes, I know about that. In an interview in an excellent PBS documentary on Barry he talks about how that score is possibly one of the most emotionally moving of all his works because it was written just after both his parents had passed away. All his scores of that short period, 1980-85 "Out of Africa", "Raise the Titanic", "High road to China" and others are all richly scored, orchestrated and performed and very deeply emotional. I highly recommend a listen to them.

@@jbbevan It was called "John Barry: Moviola" and was aired in the early 90's. I saw it twice then but not since. There was a companion soundtrack released at the same time which you can easily find on Ebay and Amazon. Barry conducted the music themes used in the special himself.

What’s so sad is that if this film was released today (with some minor tweaking to believe it’s a current film)- it would be bashed by critics. The majority of them (especially the more popular ones) are swayed with “incentives”; and this film having a low budget would not “accommodate” most of them.

I loved this movie and of course the music is compelling. I should point out that Rachmaninoff would take exception to giving credit to Barry for writing the score as Rachmaninoff is the name on the sheet music I play called, "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini". You should say Barry adapted the music to be fair to the great Rachmaninoff.
We all know but Rachmaninoff has just that piece, the rest was Barry’s compositions 🙄

I am definitely one of the people who saw and enjoyed this when it came out. It was a good movie to go see with my wife, and with Chris Reeve in the lead, I knew it couldn't be all bad ... and was completely swept away with a good story well told. And it was cinematographically beautiful.

This will always be a classic, one of the most beautiful casts, writing, directing, acting, costumes, setting, musical score, and the never ending tragedy of a great love lost, the wonder of time travel, and the life in the hereafter, all done with the main characters being the most handsome of men, and the most beautiful of women(yes, she IS, and so he WAS). Particularly powerful was the musical score, the writer being in a rather melancholy mood from the loss of both his parents, it all came together to create the timeless classic. This movie contains a scene I feel is the best acting I have ever seen, by Christopher Reeve, or ANY OTHER ACTOR, was the scene where he accidentally is torn from 1912, back to the present. How Richard tried to go back to 1912, the acting there by Reeves is devastating, probably because many of us would so love to go back in time and right the wrongs we did, that desperate, painful want, but futile desire to be the happiest we have ever been, again. We have all been Richard, at some time, or will be, and like him, will not be able, not in this life. I am reminded of Poe's "The Raven", but this movie affords them a new chance in the hereafter. I can watch this movie hundreds of times and never tire of it. Yes. I have.

Exactly the same as you. Hundreds of times on video taped from tv in the 1980s. Even now Alan when the actress Susan French as the older Elise says “come back to me” at the beginning of the film my eyes fill with tears as I think on a personal note how I would say those words to a real person in my own life. But that will never be.
I just happened to watch this movie today for the very first time. I cried all the way through-I’ve been a big fan of Jane Seymour since East Of Eden,a made-for-tv mini-series from the 1970’s. The chemistry between her and Christoper Reeve is so palpable it makes one blush! 😌
They fell in love filming this movie :) But the end of their brief relationship was also tragic

One of my favorite movies and soundtracks. I did stay at the Grand Hotel several years ago and it was a GRAND experience! I would love to return one day.

I've always wanted to go
When you start to unpack this movie to its deeper meanings it can get pretty amazing. Having grown up in Michigan and spent some time ( 3X I think) on Mackinac Island it has a special place in my heart. I remember running as a 3-4 years old on the front porch of the grand hotel and being there on the island years later so I can attest to the time shift one can have being there. With no cars allowed on the island it puts you back into the late 1800's. Your frame of reference is suspended. All perfect paraells for the movie.
When I first saw this movie I was in a altered state for weeks. The aspects you can come contact within yourself are profound including that when you fall in love with someone what you are experiencing along with them is the profound love that is the basis and connection of all of the universe. Thats the main reason why many have a transendent experience because you are experiencing that which is beyond ones imediate self.
This movie capture this point perfectly.

Coincidentally, this movie came on the TV of a neighbor I had just stopped by to say hello to, and I ended up watching it with her. I have always loved this beautiful movie, hadn't seen it in awhile, and was very happy and excited to see it again. It is classic! The story, the actors, the setting, the music.....everything about it is just wonderful!

The movie became a classic, not because it was sad, but because it was inspirational. It touched the HEART (an organ most critics don't seem to possess). On a personal note....when I came out of the theatre (after see this movie) there was a woman crying, and trying to unlock my car with her key and having no luck of course. So, I said, why don't we try MY key and see if it works. Then, she apologized and said that she had just come from seeing the movie SOMEWHERE IN TIME, still crying profusely, and "It was SO BEAUTIFUL.." She walked off sobbing, looking for her car. True story.
Honestly, I adore that film, even with the tear-jerker ending. I enjoyed hearing about these unknown (to me) details! Thanks!

James Cameron also used the plot element from Somewhere in Time in The Terminator, where the woman photographed, at the time of the snapshot, was thinking about the man who fell in love with her when he later saw the picture, and the connection he felt inspired him to travel back in time to meet her.
I always felt the ending of titanic was very similar to this movie.

I watched this movie and fell in love with the story and the music was superb. I recommend it highly.
Something happened to me almost 20 years ago where I think I experienced the closest thing to time travel I'm going to get and the first thing I thought of was this movie. Remember when Christopher Reeves was talking with his friend earlier in the movie and his friend talked about an experience he had in Venice? That whole experience happened to me, only it was in Jamestown and it was just me wandering away from the crowd/people and was just trying to absorb the history. It was part of a family road trip and I had just done a ton of research leading up to it. I'm really into history and in the past had only fallen in love with the history of a place *after* visiting it and then wanting to go back with a fuller understanding but not being able to. I had gone to the library and read a lot of books on Jamestown (the Internet was still new) in the months leading up to this. From what I understand, Jamestown has been built up a lot since then, too, so I'm not sure if I would be able to get to the quiet place I got to before and a place where it was just me and nature (nothing modern, nothing pre-colonists even). So basically what I did was get to a spot near the shore facing west and had the tourists/buildings behind me so I couldn't see or hear them. I just stood there looking at the water, trees, rocks, etc. and imagined I was a colonist just getting off the boat. Something just . . . happened. I can't explain it. There was no "proof" that I time travelled (I didn't see anything different, etc.) but I totally felt something and I felt so . . . connected? Again, I don't know how to explain it. When I did finally walk back, it was in a daze. Whenever I try to explain it, I go back to this movie. Also, it wasn't something I was even trying to do. I was just trying to appreciate the history and take everything in. I didn't even think this kind of thing was possible.
Several years later when I learned how to do genealogy research and did have more access to the Internet, I discovered that I am a direct descendant of many, many, many of those first people at Jamestown. I had no idea at the time of the time travel experience that I was even related to those people I had just been researching for months prior to this. I have a ton of bizarre "coincidences" (I don't believe in coincidences), history repeating itself, strange feelings/fears possibly being explained that I discovered in my genealogy research and I am convinced genetic memory is a thing. I have already written so much that I will spare you all those stories (and I'm not sure how much more personal info I want to put out there, lol!) but this one experience at Jamestown is still probably one of the biggest in all of that. I haven't been back since but would jump at an opportunity and do plan on going back someday. I'm not expecting to have the same experience and I am prepared to be disappointed with it being built up but I do want to see how it "feels".

I'm not sure how I found this video but was excited about seeing it in my suggested feed and finding other fans of this movie! In my experience, not a lot of people are familiar with this movie (or not as many as there should be) and I was excited to share my story with other fans. I did not know there was a convention, either, perhaps that is another road trip and another chance to share my story? ;) This is probably one of the most realistic feeling time travel movies but I'm not sure if that is because of what happened to me. I really want to rewatch it again now, too! It's one of my parent's favorites which is how I think I even was aware of it in the first place when all of that happened. I wonder what I would have thought if I hadn't seen this movie before my experience?

It has been many months since you wrote it, but if you should see this, I think you would be interested in another fascinating movie (possibly based on actual events) concerning time travel. It is called “Miss Morrison’s Ghosts” and it is easy to locate on TH-cam. I am in my late sixties now, but I first watched it with my mother when I was in high school (or college?). At any rate, it made such an impression on me that I have wanted to see it again ever since, and was delighted to find it on TH-cam a few years ago. Do search for it and watch it, if you have not.

You are not alone. You may have a Past Life Experience that is similar. As do I. I'm not crazy... but I found that there are only certain people that I can share this kind of stuff with. I don't care what anyone thinks... I know what I know. This movie hit me hard as well. The music brings me to tears whenever I hear it. So I know... just like you do... that this present time is not where we belong. It is just soooo wonderful to see a movie like this to help take us back to where we belong. Strange things have happened to me too, too many coincidences, bumping into people who help me along my path, my loved ones who have passed send me signs and I feel connected with certain places as you do. I dream of past lives or places I've never been in this life. I'm 67 now and with the love of my life, although I had to wait for him I knew I would find him and I knew it was him from our first meeting. I feel we were together in another life and destined to be together again. I introduced him to "Somewhere In Time", it was so wonderful to share. Blessings to you.

Filming it on Mackinac Island and at the Grand Hotel was a brilliant idea with their severely limited budget. They didn't need to do any set dressing at all. All they needed to do was put the extras in period clothing. They could shoot it today. If you are a fan of this movie and have the chance you should visit the island. Once you get off of the main street you are back in time.
Make sure you rent a bicycle as well.
I was there in 1995. Beautiful, unique and quiet little town (best fudge ever!). If I ever move back to Michigan, I would happily consider living there.

Thank you for reviewing this film. It's not the most mainstream picture, so it's good to see it receiving attention from a popular TH-camr such as yourself. I was totally blindsided by how involved and mesmerizingly romantic Somewhere In Time is, to the point where it's now one of my favorite romance films. The genre can really be hit-or-miss, as at its lowest it can make for some incredibly sappy and maudlin stories. But at its highest, I'm in the film's hands, riding every step along with the on-screen couple.

Somewhere in Time is such a beautiful and tragic story. I was about 10 when I first watched it. I was devastated and angry for them during the penny scene. And more so, when I recalled the beginning scene in the movie, when she first hands him the watch and says, "Come back to me." Elise looked for him too, and died missing him too. I am a mess, every time I watch it. Even more so, since it was one of my favorite uncle's favorite movie. He was very much like Christopher Reeve. He was a total romantic, easy going, completely devoted to my aunt and my cousins. Also tall and slim, broad shoulders, with brown hair, beautiful blue eyes, and a warm smile with a caring and gentle soul. I loved him dearly. We were both very sad when Christopher Reeve passed. Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour were born to play these roles. I can't imagine any of the lead actors from the 70's, portraying these characters so authentically. Also, the musical score, to the beautiful costumes, to the choice of locations! This film holds a very special place in my heart. I would love to go to the Grand Hotel some day.

I loved this film. The ending when he accidentally broke his hypnosis broke my heart. I always asked myself, “How could one live after losing your one true love?” I think his character dying was a beautiful blessing.

Indeed, I thought he was blessed that in his timeline he died so soon after being separated from Elise to be reunited with her in the Afterlife, whereas in her timeline she had to wait 60 years before being reunited with him, during which time she became very withdrawn and reclusive due to depression, when before she had been outgoing and happy.
The movie critic was wrong my husband said that any man that could go back in time for a beauty like Jane .

The Time Travel film craze in the 80s started with Nicholas Myers' "Time After Time" in 1979.
However the "Is it you?" scene in this film is among the most beautiful things recorded to American cinema.

I cried when I watched this movie. It was such a beautiful love story.
I first saw this in 1982 on HBO, back when they still showed movies. A friend had told me about it. I love Jane Seymour. She was the perfect pick for this role as well as Christopher Reeves. It seems like in the scene where Reeves is removing any modern furniture and coins from his pockets. It appears he's made certain to have removed everything that is of modern time.
This movie never got an even chance, much better than the reviews suggested.

Reminds me of Robin William's beautifully, though tragic, done film "What Dreams May Come", since that one is so strongly emotional now with Robin's passing and that he took his own life (due to the anti-depressant drugs he was on which was found to cause suicidal tendencies), very much like his character in the film.

Both my dad and I loved this movie and the music. I was born in 75, so I probably first saw it as a rental or on cable. My Dad, who I loved dearly, had a rarely talked about experience with his own dad who commited suicide when my dad was 12. It was so rarely talked about that I often forgot about it. One night, when watching Somewhere In Time for the 20th time... I ask my Dad... "If you could go back in time, where would you want to go?" In my youthful naivete, I expect him to say some centuries-long leap to the Old West or something.... But he says without hesitation... "To the day my father committed suicide." Here I am writing this... 25 years later... not sure I ever recovered from that answer.
Thank you for your great review of the movie. I definitely think that James Cameron is a big fan of Somewhere In Time since there is way too many similarities. What made me admire Christopher Reve even more is that he fought for the part to be in Somewhere In Time. His agent turned it down because he wouldn’t have gotten paid enough but Christopher still wanted to be in it. I admired Christopher because he believed that kind of love is possible. What was sad about his passing was to loose such person who fights for what he believes in his professional life and especially his struggles as an individual in his personal life. People with that kind of fight and passion in life is rare.

Somewhere in time has a connection to a Australian children's show which is slightly different to the story but has time travel in the title of this was similar to the movie but very different ending as I remember one other strange thing about the film it was set in the same place where Practical Magic was filmed and I think near to where the Fog was filmed to there's a lighthouse I not to sure if it was original film or the remake?

This movie was doing very well In Hong Kong back then. There was a cinema that showing nothing else but this movie 4 times a day for whole year. To most people here, Reeves is even better known as Richard than its famous role as Superman.

It has always been one of my favorite films since it first came out. John Barry's music is so haunting. I didn't realize his parents died not long before he was asked to compose the score. Many of his film scores have a haunting quality.

The music box plays Rachmaninoff but the music theme that everyone loves was written by John Barry who wrote beautiful unforgettable music to other movies also! He said he'd written this theme right after his father died and he was inspired by his missing his father's influence in his life!
