The Lawn Care Nut so if I’m doing a prodiamine and dithiopyr application would I still put down the speedzone? And if so how long after second application of produamine and dirhiopyr would I put the soeedzone down? Thanks for the help
The Lawn Care Nut thank you for all of your videos they are fantastic sir. I live in Houston Texas and as you probably are aware our weather has been crazy as usual however I used milorganite in my front and back yard about two weeks ago and have started to see brief results do you think I got ahead of myself I just want to learn the begin and end times as far as fertilization for my yard and should I do this every 4 weeks and how much should I water usually I water three to four times a week any help would be greatly appreciated my name is Jason
Thanks! I’m from the northeast and I’m having issues with moss taking over my lawn. How should I do my early spring start up? Can I go straight to pre emergent and fert or should I try and get the moss up first ? Thank you

The clips from the church and Al’s house in Indiana takes me back to when I found his channel and started this obsession. Fond memories! Whenever I start nitpicking my lawn, I have to remember how happy that guy 4 years ago would have been with it. 👌
Eh Ess ....when I found the videos with Allen in that Church lawn, Milorganite was $9 a bag, jumped to $13 and today I saw Milorganite for $19 a bag at HD, new formulation and less lbs. My Lawn looks amazing but I have to make adjustments, I can’t justify that kind of price especially when taking care of 1/2 acre of lawn.
I've heard you should not plant new grass seed and fertilize at the same time. Which should I do first? How long should I wait in between? When should I spread lime? I have 6,300 sq ft in Boston. Soil temp is 57 now. I ordered your 24-0-6 Flagship Bio-Nite fertilizer and it arrived. 1,000 sq ft will be new lawn planting for the first time. The rest has patchy grass (some sections less than 30% grass). I bought the property three years ago and did no treatment other than mow and water. I've dethatched twice and it looks much better. That helped take up dead grass and excess moss. There were too many mulched up leaves and other debris left over from the Fall. Any advise is appreciated. I love you videos!
I LOVE the Lawn Care Nut? I have learned so much and am much more involved in the care of our lawn now! My husband will ask me questions now! You just have to follow the recipe!!
thank you for posting videos to help alot of people. im from southern oregon and winter for us is either really good or really nothing but either or its freezing. Here in Redmond WA, the moss that yelled at me last week is evidence enough that we had a mild winter (three days of snow, temps seldom below freezing, and never long). So, I've already thrown down Moss Out. And I really have to get my first cut in soon!
At 10:36 I Scalped and power detached the heck out of my lawn on April 7th. And actually hoped half of it would die. And then reseeded with various elite varieties of kbg and a little rye.
I put my seed down October 26 kgb. It took a few weeks and a couple frost and started growing. Buried in snow from end of December melting now and it kept growing under snow
Winter Saves our butts in MN. Last year I started getting crabgrass late in the summer because we removed Trees in our yard mid-summer, the shade for 30 years has thinned the grass so when sun hit it, of course, we got every empty grass spot full of crabgrass. Best part..... Winter came, killed all the crabgrass, then gave me a heads up on how to prepare for this year.
"a couple of two, tree nAHtches lower..." love how the Chicago accent just flows in and out like its nothing. Great video, yet again. Can't wait to get into the lawn and thrower down!
I live in Noblesville, IN and our 55 degree mark is pretty close to the same as Crown Point, tax time. In 2021, a weird year, we already reached 55 soil temps by the third week of March. Caught me off-guard and the air temps are going to stay well above 60 for most of this week before going down to the 50s. I skipped pre-emergent last year and paid the price with a real problem with crabgrass. Very concerned about this year, have not gotten the prodiamine down yet. Thanks to my program last year, my yard stayed green until mid-February and then greened up early March as the snow was melting away. It's beautiful. My neighbors yards are still pretty brown but that has its benefits and drawbacks. Had no choice except to mow this weekend (twice and down to 2 inches), at least 3 weeks earlier than usual. Might be too late for the prodiamine first pass but its going down this week with my fingers crossed.
Thanks for your tips. These are helping me keep our turf athletic fields in shape in Michigan's Upper Peninsula....super short growing season, but awesome results using your tips!
We just built a new house. Lawn was sodded with KBG. Sod was placed right on top of the clay soil after final grading. Greened up quickly this spring. One half of the front lawn is dark green. The other half is a lighter more yellowish green. There is a definitely sharp line of demarcation where one sod stops and other begins, like they came off two different rolls of sod. Should I throw some high N fertilizer on the lighter side to make it match better? Newbie on lawn care here. Love your videos. (In KCMO) Thanks for any tips.
Awesome awesome content! Must have stopped the video 20 times to scratch notes about my seasonal lawn care plan! Live in the South Bend area so I really appreciate the Crown Point example data.
North east Wyoming just got more snow... soil still 38. Waiting for sunshine to dry out and mow. Looking at the pre emergent guide to apply once soil is warm.
So awesome! Thank you sir! I do have a quick question. Why did you suggest Speedzone if Prodiamine is being used as a pre-m? I used prodiamine last year and didn’t have a single dandelion. I even had neighbors comment “look, no weeds at all. It’s gotta be sod”, every time they would walk by. Just curious why the need of an herbicide if a pre-m is used? Thanks again for an amazingly informative video! Loved it!
Northeast pa. My property is 2 acres of lawn i mow and on a hill so its tough to water. Mowing often and at 3.25in made a huge improvement over the last few years since i moved in. My problem is fert the entire property is so expensive. Never tried air8 so thanks for the tips im gonna give that a try on the rocky soil. Need to get the best bang for the buck while staying affordable
I scalped /power raked mine, best yard in the neighborhood now. (only starter fert so far) First time home owner, South Central South Dakota. - Also seeded, but the germination rate was disappointing
Ive read a lot of conflicting information about your position on the NPK choices for spring fertilization. Assuming that a decent fertilization took place in the fall, would you not want to see a relatively lower N reading and a significantly higher P reading in order to facilitate more robust root system development rather than just getting a giant shot of top growth out of the grass this early in the season? Admittedly, I've yet to finish the whole video so perhaps this is a scenario specific choice, but either way I'd love to hear anyone else's opinion on this. Excellent content and thanks again for all the work you put into these videos, very helpful. Thanks!

Dogs and trees, natural enemies to lawns. If your dogs tear it up that bad then perhaps one of the added expenses of owning a dog is to resod every year. Or go with synthetic turf. Grass just will not grow well on a playground. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you. 👊

Question regarding aeration in the spring vs air-8? I understood you to say you don’t recommend aeration in the spring, so why would I need the air-8 in the spring as you recommend in this video?
Good deal. I am a beekeeper and I stress about what I put down and when. If I can I try and time my herbicide and grub apps when it will be cooler and less bees flying. At dusk before an overnight rain is perfect.
Re: the dethatcher, the GW model’s major advantage is the weight (30lbs maybe), it’s much more accessible/usable for one person to transport and use vs. a rental dethatcher that weighs hundreds of lbs.
Awesome channel! I love that you haven't forgot about us working guys up North and still give good information for cool season grass even though you live in the sunshine state.
@@noisay1977 my guess is you left it too long over winter? My general advice would be to get out there now and rake it up. Depending on how bad it is you may want to overseed this spring. If the grass isn't thinned out too bad after raking, it should fill in on its own.
I appreciate this information a lot. I've watched a lot of your videos and have come to some of my own conclusions. First and foremost, have a season (or 2) plan to get everything to my happy point. Second: Don't rush it, but don't wait either. And finally, enjoy the experience. It's gone from a chore to enjoyable as I've done more and more. We're nearly to the happy point with our lawn now. A few bare spots and leveling to do until I'm happy. But man, it's nice getting compliments.
Thank you Allyn ... I follow the cool lawn schedule and have a few questions... When can i put down grub prevention, before or after my pre-emergent application? Also, when should i put down the Speed Zone application for clover...before the 2nd application on pre- emergent? I don't know if the prodiamine will cancel the effectiveness of GrubEx and SpeedZone if I put them down weeks apart. Thank you!
Grub Ex in mid spring. Speed Zone is a post emergent weed killer so you spray it on the clover once you see it. It will work VERY well on clover. The pre-emergent is not effected by the grub ex or by the speed zone. All separate apps that do not play together.
New home owner here. I was dead set on seeding this spring. I did a complete renovation last fall and seeded then. My lawn is pretty thin now. Lots of bare patches. Now after watching this video I’m torn. Should I lay down a pre emergent and try to protect all that new grass I laid down in the fall? If I do that, when can patch bare spots?
good time to start looking for company that has lawn roller -- they get busy in Spring and get on the schedule when things thaw. Cheaper and easier for the Pro to come in and do it. I do mine every couple years due to lawn heaving. Costs me about 75.00 for 18,000 sq. ft lawn. in Mid Michigan.
I'm sticking with refurbishing my lawn up here in the PNW this spring with Scotts products. If I did the fall program I'll have a kazillion leaves on my lawn in a soaked boggy soil. Leaves kill the lawn and I'm not getting rid of my trees to have the perfect lawn. I've tried the fall approach and it doesn't work for my lawn. I'm hoping the Scotts system to control crabgrass and promote turf buildup pays off for the summertime since I don't have an irrigation system for my 500 sqft lawn area. Yeah, that's what it's been reduced to over the years-1200 sqft down to 500 sqft and backing the edge off from the concrete sidewalk and driveway. Crossing my fingers with spring and Scotts. I'm new to all of this "treat your lawn like a member of the family" and the learning curve is climbing. Wish me luck.
will Zoysia Zeon grass take over tall fescue? if they were next to each other lawns ? I live in Georgia Augusta thank you in advance I am a fan of your TH-cam channel and I flow all your videos
Many many years ago, the KMart gardener, on the radio, stated putting grass seed in the freezer over night would trick the seed so it thought it was coming out of winter.
Hey allyn/viewers. I live in nj and have cool season grass. I am noticing a lot of bittercress popping up. Seems to mostly be in the shaded moist areas. This weed has been a problem for me. Should I take action now with the cold temps or wait until it’s warmer. And also, any recommendations for this weed? Thanks for help.
Love your videos and buy products from you - had to mention it's too funny I grew up in FL and couldn't take the heat anymore and moved to TN, and you moved from IN to FL
I live in South Florida, I have thin Bermuda grass. When should I apply a pre-emergent? And or A weed and feed? It's been 3 weeks now since I applied weed and feed throughout my whole yard. I haven't fertilized
Lawn Care nut what a great video I'm going to let you know I'm from Lowell Indiana and we had a bad winter cold and a lot of snow there's still a few inches of snow on the ground my question is how do you feel about buying fertilizer from a co-op I like to buy it from The Co-op. it seems a lot cheaper and I have about 10,000 square yard . My mom and dad are down in Florida they are snowbirds so you guys enjoy the weather. I enjoy your videos keep them coming I wish you still lived up here
haha I had my video muted for a min and you look like you are a DJ throwing down beats.... about doing basic dude stuff. I bought my first house three years ago and you really educated me and allowed my soil and grass to live again, love the passion you bring to the yard.
Always love the vids. Here's an idea: Break up this massive video into a playlist, use YT search data via trends to determine which questions people are asking around each topic.
You said to dethatch 2-3 weeks before first mow, but my grass is already overgrown (western Wa where it’s still too wet to mow). Can I get one or two mows in to get the grass at a reasonable height and then dethatch?
Allyn, this year I have a TON of Poa Trivialis. My understanding is the best time to kill it would be about now. With that, I would like to attempt to reseed where I'm going to kill that off so no pre emergent this year. Of the 3500 sq feet of PRG I have I'd say about 1/3 is Poa Trivialis. There's also some Poa Annua. Should I go that route and deal with the crabgrass as it comes? I didn't have much last year. My other option is to ride it out and renovate it all in the fall but I'm concerned about the success rate of actually riding the lawn of Trivialis. Kinda stuck on what to do.
@@TheLawnCareNut I guess I'll look into sod. It's in odd shapes and spots but I can just work it and see. I guess worse case scenario I can redo it in the fall.
@@PacificNorthwestLawns yes for sure do sod. If not, all the poa seeds that are there will just grow right back. With sod, it stops the sun which hopefully then keeps those seeds laying still and in active.
Can I put down pre-emergent this Spring if I over seeded last fall? If so, what kind/brand should I use? I don’t want to prevent the new grass from germinating.
I'm in the Pacific Northwest. My house and lawn are coming up on one year old. Followed your new lawn tips all last year and it looked so dominant that I had neighbors coming up to my door asking me what I was doing! However...winter definitely changed things. The front yard is still very green but SO thin now I can see the bare ground. The ground is also always damp. My house faces north, so I know it will get better when the sun finally shines on it again, but is there anything I can do to keep it from thinning out so much or to thicken it up quickly? Thanks for ALL of your info!
Thank you Allyn, I'm in the transition zone (NC), and I started last September with rehabing my crappy yard with a blend of tall fescue and rye. I followed a lot of advice found on your channel and others. Since then, the grass has stayed dark green and pretty healthy. I maintained it with a winter fertilizer as well and you're right about our mild, almost non existent winter this year. My only complaint was not putting out enough grass seed so therefore there's some bare spots. I thought I might try overseeding with a top quality tall fescue this spring but after this video, I decided to wait till the fall for that. I've already put down a small bag of Humic DG (need a lot more), and follow your recommendations with pre emergent and then a good fert. I'll continue to enhance the soil and strengthen the fescue I have then overseed in the fall.
@@TheLawnCareNut TY Team, Follow on question. What time during OCT do you recommend overseeding, and should I over seed right after the lawn mow the grass?
Hey Allen i live in the Pacific Northwest and I have Kentucky Blue Grass it’s been a crazy weather system hear in the Northwest Rain Rain Rain🙃🙃🙃my question to you is I aerated already and power raked but I have a lot of bare spots now I just did a yard mastery soil test waiting for the results…but in the meantime I want to try to seed some Rye grass instead of Kentucky should I
Very good stuff but some conflict. Early in video you mentioned aerating after pre emergent and most would aerate first. Later in video you mentioned power raking then pre emergent which i agree. Early you noted high nitrogen in spring then later mention lower nitrogen in spring.
Allyn, you discuss putting down fertilizer in the Spring around the time your soil is @50°. Is there a time that it is too late to give it a high nitrogen fert?
Question for you Allyn: A few years ago you used to push for the use of milorganite in early spring. Is that no longer your recommendation since I’m hearing you suggest high nitrogen fertilizer?
I live in NJ , I detached , re- seeded and fertilized in September. Then fertilized again on Thanksgiving. What are steps I can do now for the spring ? When do I start and what do I need to do ? Any suggestions or am I good to go ?

I appreciate this information a lot. I've watched a lot of your videos and have come to some of my own conclusions. First and foremost, have a season (or 2) plan to get everything to my happy point. Second: Don't rush it, but don't wait either. And finally, enjoy the experience. It's gone from a chore to enjoyable as I've done more and more. We're nearly to the happy point with our lawn now. A few bare spots and leveling to do until I'm happy. But man, it's nice getting compliments.
Like the old video clip that's where my journey started back in 2016. Watched all your videos that winter preparing for 2017.
When do I start overseeding and adding my first fertilizer in Columbia SC
wonderful choice of music.. sit back and learn sumn.. much appreciated
@@TheLawnCareNut Thank you!
I live in upstate NY. Can I control weeds on 1 1/2 acres with granular weed and feed only or do I also need liquid weed killer. Thanks Great channel!
Great Vid Big Al........i did buy some Bayer grub killer that says its kills grubs with in 24hrs that worked really good.
yes that is a good one if you need the corrective kill for sure.
How much will it cost if I have someone air rake
I love watching and learning from your videos...give it coming..Thanks
When do you guys drop your fall pre-emergent for cool season grass?
New home owner here. I was dead set on seeding this spring. I did a complete renovation last fall and seeded then. My lawn is pretty thin now. Lots of bare patches. Now after watching this video I’m torn. Should I lay down a pre emergent and try to protect all that new grass I laid down in the fall? If I do that, when can patch bare spots?
I like the mower reviews. Event he riding ones I don't want because the weight of them would ruin my yard. Changing the blades is what I hate doing
When is it a good time to aerate and fertilize my thin grass in the Pacific Northwest?
My lawn is bumpy should I use a lawn roller this spring to evev it out?
good time to start looking for company that has lawn roller -- they get busy in Spring and get on the schedule when things thaw. Cheaper and easier for the Pro to come in and do it. I do mine every couple years due to lawn heaving. Costs me about 75.00 for 18,000 sq. ft lawn. in Mid Michigan.
No more starter fertilizer for cool season grasses? Just regular fertilizer with high nitrogen content and pre-emergent?
Shouldn't I aerate before pre emergent? As to not disturb the barrier?
Oh and I'm using a machine
Many many years ago, the KMart gardener, on the radio, stated putting grass seed in the freezer over night would trick the seed so it thought it was coming out of winter.
Hey allyn/viewers. I live in nj and have cool season grass. I am noticing a lot of bittercress popping up. Seems to mostly be in the shaded moist areas. This weed has been a problem for me. Should I take action now with the cold temps or wait until it’s warmer. And also, any recommendations for this weed? Thanks for help.
Use Speed Zone. Works well in college temps.
to aerate or not to aerate at the beginning of the spring?
Enjoyed it. The music makes me want to go to an Early Bird dinner.
I have a townhome, yet here I am 14 minutes in. 😂💪🔥 Super fun video pal.
So Brian is a Lawn Care Nut? Very cool.
Love your videos and buy products from you - had to mention it's too funny I grew up in FL and couldn't take the heat anymore and moved to TN, and you moved from IN to FL
Found Gordon's Speed Zone at Farm and Fleet in Northern Illinois. That stuff works great! Thanks for the awesome tips.
I live in South Florida, I have thin Bermuda grass. When should I apply a pre-emergent? And or A weed and feed? It's been 3 weeks now since I applied weed and feed throughout my whole yard. I haven't fertilized
Weed and feed is a fertilizer plus weed control. If you download my pre emergent guide linked in description (free) it gives you the timing.
What is the attachment on your mower at 3:25?
It's a lawn stripper
Lawn striper
Thanks. Never seen one before.
Sven, while I am an avid YT user, I am no power user. Would you care to expand on "YT search data via trends"? Tnx.
You said to dethatch 2-3 weeks before first mow, but my grass is already overgrown (western Wa where it’s still too wet to mow). Can I get one or two mows in to get the grass at a reasonable height and then dethatch?
Yes, you'll be fine. I'd do 2 cuts in a week to get it lower and then dethatch.
What device will you be using to dethatch? I have a Greenworks myself.
Kill it in early spring and sod. Lay pre emergent once sod roots. About 30 days or two mowings. Sod blots out the sun.
@@TheLawnCareNut doesn't Poa Trivialis spread via stolons though? I guess either way blocking out the sun sure makes sense.
Found a 22 inch bluebird on craigslist for $275 last season best lawn investment I have made in years.
Can I put down pre-emergent this Spring if I over seeded last fall? If so, what kind/brand should I use? I don’t want to prevent the new grass from germinating.
If you over-seeded last fall it would have been done germinating before winter came so yes, you can use pre-emergent.
Keep adding seed each fall and the strong will survive.
Any recommendations as too which products to use as bio stimulants up in Canada?
Can you apply these products to zoysia?
What's the best advice to keep my lawn green during OCT-APR in SC?
overseed with ryegrass.
@@TheLawnCareNut TY Team, Follow on question. What time during OCT do you recommend overseeding, and should I over seed right after the lawn mow the grass?
Man you were buff back in '13! Thank you so much for the video.
Haven't checked in with you in a while, (because you taught me so well!), but what happened to all the Milorganite talk? Have I missed something?
What about liquid detach instead of mechanical, after coming out from winter?
the liquid is more of a maintenance product - if you have a thick thatch buildup best to mechanically remove it.
How early prior to spring can I do a soil analysis so I can plan how much actos and micros I need during the year?? 35-40 dogs ok??
if you can pull out dirt about 4" down then you can do the test - so whenever the ground is no longer frozen, go for it.
Perfect thanks.
Question for you Allyn: A few years ago you used to push for the use of milorganite in early spring. Is that no longer your recommendation since I’m hearing you suggest high nitrogen fertilizer?
I used milo and it greened up pretty well.
Thanks for the great videos and all the information Hayne. Can you recommend something to kill wild onions or wild garlic? Thanks
I live in NJ , I detached , re- seeded and fertilized in September. Then fertilized again on Thanksgiving. What are steps I can do now for the spring ? When do I start and what do I need to do ? Any suggestions or am I good to go ?
Yes I love the greenworks
The LCN, question about lawm mower . I am thinking about electric as opposed to gas. Your thoughts, please. Bought my first house and will be doing the work myself. Thank you, sir.
Ok saw Carbon X on the LCN site when is the time to use that??? with Cool season Grasses???
When soil temps hit 55F. CarbonX has high N to get you started off right.
@@TheLawnCareNut Sorry I am not new but no way near the LCN level Yet.....Do I use in place of a Fert....????
@@FreedomRock44 Fert is fertilizer. CarbonX is a fertilizer, so is Milorganite. So you can choose any fert you want to get you start off in spring. CarbonX is a good one because it has very high nitrogen
@@TheLawnCareNut Thanks so much Allyn so if I throw down my pre-emergent when can I throw down my fert... Spacing wise. Thanks for the help. I am watching your vids.
@@FreedomRock44 they can go down on the same day or days apart - one does not interfere with the other. If you have cool season grass, you will trigger them both the same day.
Funny I lived in Tinley Park and Orland Park too. Now retired to Florida.
