  • Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and “The mother of mindfulness,” Dr. Ellen Langer discuss her latest book, The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way To Chronic Health. From this they explore how intentioned awareness paired with humility allows for a healthier mindset and body, how the perception of time impacts the effects of disease and age, the way to view tragedy and suffering so that we may conquer it through faith and hope, and the immense benefits found in carefully considering to what, where, and who you direct your attention.
Ellen J. Langer was the first woman to be tenured in psychology at Harvard, where she is still professor of psychology. The recipient of three Distinguished Scientists awards, the Arthur W. Staats Award for Unifying Psychology, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Liberty Science Genius Award, Dr. Langer is the author of eleven other books, including the international bestseller Mindfulness, as well as The Power of Mindful Learning, Counterclockwise and On Becoming an Artist. Her trailblazing experiments in social psychology have earned her inclusion in The New York Times Magazine’s “Year in Ideas” issue. She is known worldwide as the “mother of mindfulness” and the “mother of positive psychology”. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

I've been dealing with grief, anxiety and depression due to the sudden and unexpected death of my twin sister. I retired a year before she passed, in order to spend more time with her (she was severely depressed and had bi-polar, and was very lonely). So now I am trying to figure out my life from here as a 59-year-old retiree without her. This discussion gave me hope that I can work my way through and reinvent my life, and am not relegated to being overwhelmed by grief, anxiety, depression and a loss of meaning forever. Lots of good food for thought here.

Hey Im soo sorry for you loss... I've lost my Dad and my brother Nick when I was 10... we were super close but i cant even imagine losing my twin 😢😭 I hope you continue to fight to find the light in the world again... I'm quite sure that's what they would want us to do. LIke all of this its a little bitter-sweet; but I've taken great great comfort and peace from Both my Dad & Nick visiting in my dreams (quite often especially @ right after their death) So I just wanted to say- Ill say a prayer to Nick & Pops: ASk them to help your twin to find her way to the dreamscape so she can visit you and have a brief but heartning reunion. May you find ever more strength and life in your heart and in your spirit! Peace & Love & Feasts & Wealth & Health to you and all your loves! 💕✌🙇😇🥳🙏

@@williamjoyce769 You know how Jordan says that talking IS thinking? Well, without my twin to talk to, it's almost like I can't think! I am not alone -- my husband has been amazing and I have family nearby, but it is not the same. I'm so sorry for your loss so early in your life. Nobody talks about this kind of loss, nobody gets it until they experience it. I had no clue, and never even considered that I would live out the rest of my life without her. I do not seek to "contact" her, as it is expressly forbidden in the Bible and I believe chaotic spirits can seize on that and lead us astray. I firmly believe she is resting now, which she so sorely needed after decades of mental illness and then overmedication that left her a zombie. I have woken up in the middle of the night a few times since, with a feeling of elation. I believe that was some sort of glimpse into what she is experiencing now and what I have to look forward to after life. I take life a few hours at a time, and am thinking hard about Jordan's discussions about future authoring and aiming at goals.

I saw a video of Jordan Peterson a year ago, THEN I looked up Jordan ... liked what I heard, then downloaded his books.
I have been a drunk my whole life, to the point that I'm living alone in this 4 bedroom, 2-bath house all by myself here in Halifax.
I have no friends unless they are drunks, I go to work just long enough to cover the basic bills, always threatened to be fired, I'm a pig, I live in squalled conditions, dirty dishes, clothes on the floor, sleeping in a lazy boy, smoking dope and getting drunk, neighbors hate me because I won't mow the lawn, won't clean up the front yard, just staying drunk and waiting to die .......thinking that being 64 years old is long enough to live.
THAT was a year ago..... Since reading Jordan's books and of course watching every single dam video he uploads, I have not had a drink or done drugs this year.
My house is spotless, my backyard has vegetables growing in it now, the deck is usable now, my blood pressure has gone down so far that for the first time in 9 years, I no longer take blood pressure pills.
I mow my lawn AND my neighbors, just for the exercise. The woman across the street now comes over to "visit" me and only me. My son has moved in with me while he goes to trade school to better himself.
I have not missed a day of work in one year, I received a promotion where I now teach my trade instead of perform my trade.
My depression was that I'm going to die in debt... Jordan explained it and I adapted it to my life. I have one more year before I retire...I have "fixed up" my house and have been offered over $400,000 for it. When I sell it, I will pay off my line of credit, pay off my credit cards, and then I'm moving into my nephew's house that he inherited from his in laws and all he asks is that I take care of it till I'm dead, with $300,000 in my account ...debt free.
I will have 4 pensions coming in, plus, my nephew said for me to take some of my money and build a small welding shop in the second garage and just make a few bucks on the side, keep me busy, I'm a red seal pipe welder.
What got this all started was simply reading Jordan books, start off slow, don't take big bites, just take little bites at first and feel the feeling of accomplishment.
Wash and wax that car, clean the interior, shampoo the rugs, and NOW I don't mind driving, getting out of the house.
I bought a motorcycle this year, I bought a nice set of drums, I picked up a PA system, so friends with instruments that I met in counseling can now come over and jam in the basement.
It's so simple the way Jordan explained it … But in the video, it's like he's yelling at me, it's like he KNOWS I can do it, I just need somebody to shit on me and remind me that I'm not broke, I'm just bent ...and he can HELP ME straighten out ... and it worked .... Jordan said ... GO TO WORK ... establish a ritual in my life, go to work every day, FIND A WOMAN ... don't be alone, TELL THE TRUTH ... my friend called and said, why don't you come over anymore … I said … Because you're a drunk, and you shit on your wife for no reason ...people don't gravitate towards people like you ... people gravitate to people like ME .... GOD, that felt good.
I'm academically educated, but now I listen to people as if THEY are smarter than me, let them make their complete point and don't interrupt them … Then debate what was said, so respectful when I do it Jordan's way ..... I think now, before I speak, I used to be called "The guy that thinks out loud" … Not anymore ...but without sounding like I'm listening from my throne.
I offered to take my older neighbors dog for a walk just to get me out of the house, because Jordan said to "get out" .. No matter how or why, but get out and get out of the house often...my ritual now is, every day, even if it's only for 10 minutes, I take my neighbor's dog for a walk, at least until he pees and poops.
My clothes are changed daily, I never leave the house without a shower and a proper shave, I get my hair cut every 5 weeks, I buy new clothes every month, I owned one suit that I purchased in 2008, now I own 4. The first time I wore a suit out for lunch, my friend said " My, don't you clean up well" .... and that was the incentive to buy another suit.
Jordan said if you do something for 21 days straight, without ever forgetting, it will become habit and that is so true. I was always late for work because I didn't care, but now I make it a point to be early, for 2 reasons, it's a sign of respect towards your employer and it is always safer to be " under the radar " at your job.
I blamed my problems on my wife leaving me, but now I see that I am responsible for my own life, I can waste it or fulfill it...I choose the latter.
Furthermore, I don't even curse anymore, because somewhere's on my road to fulfillment, someone said to me " a person curses because they know no other adjectives "
I must admit, at first I had to have a dictionary beside me while listening or reading Jordan Peterson talk ...some of those 5 syllable words really were over my head, but that is what a dictionary is for.

I am not generally short on knowledge of what positive traits I need to improve, nor ignorant of obstacles to eliminate in my life‐ yet I still struggle with the progress I want. Combining that knowledge and my own effort, with some of the improved perspective suggestions offered here, I think will propel me positively forward at a faster rate.

I remember learning in chemistry class how science also proves that not everything is as simple as math. When you had 50 mL of water in 50 mL of rubbing alcohol mixed together it comes up 5m short. The reason because the smaller atoms in the alcohol squeeze in between the water atoms. (Right now it's gotten better with medication, but its have been developing back and right now ive started hearing people talk to me, comment on what im doing, like once a day and it interrupts what I'm doing and makes me question myself.) I might not be mentally tough as I would like. But I can be better and I'm not mentally weak. It's a curable thing, it's a manageable thing and there is hope for you, I want you to know that, if you take anything from my rambling. I think dont identify yourself with it too much, it's just a part of your brain that's having a problem. Things like daily routine, diet, exercise is still an effective way to be mentally healthy. Stress can do you in, so watch out for that aswell.

I remember my kindergarten teacher asked us what color grapes were. I had two grapevines at home, one green grapes and one round blue grapes. Hands went up, red-yes, purple-yes, green-yes and I said blue. She quickly said, “No, not blue.” I’m 58 and I remember it so clearly. She told me that what I knew to be true-right in my backyard!- wasn’t true. It told me that school and my teachers (and, by the way, I loved Mrs. Nogel!) were not interested in the real world, but another world-the world of certain questions and certain answers. No part of me wantedt to be a part of that limited narrow world. Ended up homeschooling my kids for a time and I think it all started with that awareness in kindergarten.

Love this! Brilliant! I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year(2022) I always said “they say” breast cancer. I made my treatment decisions with very little conversation with the doctors, but in great prayer with God. Once I took those steps I stopped further conversations with “them” about treatments and wait on God for further instructions. I have moments, I do still live in my flesh, but as God brings me through I put one foot in front of the other. I have always believed you have to get sick to appreciate feeling well. BTW..my mom is 6 years out from stage 4 colon cancer (stopped all treatment after 3 chemos, right before they were going to add radiation and my uncle is 20+ yrs out from less than 1yr to live and even cashed in life insurance. I had hard life both mentaly and physicaly (32 now) and 2019 i got constant 24\7 panic anxiety daily for months, was on meds and meet psychologists and so on which did help a bit but it was never as i wanted it to be. Then instarted thinking about it and doing what i wrote above about "facing impending doom" and over a single week it all went away. No meds, no therapy. I could went with ok i have anxiety for the rest of my life and ask for sorry and feel sorry for myself every day, but i went counter it, i didnt have it, now i do but i can undo that and not have it again. And i made it.

As for me, I felt transported to the 80s, the days of amongst others, Louise Hay, author of self-help, motivational and metaphysics books, such as, 'You can heal your life'. I found their premises and approach a bit similar, in as much as none of them enjoy robust scientific evidence. Their principles could be potentially dangerous too, if they can lead some people to believe for example, that a terminal illness can be cured through the power of one's mind or the other way round. Thank you for your invaluable work.

I spat my tea out in amusement when I heard Dr Langer tell the story of the meal out with her then husband in Paris, the bit about him saying "you ate the pancreas twenty minutes ago". Priceless. Very interesting to hear Dr Langer's thoughts on how people should react and behave when they have been given a bad medical prognosis. I recently read of a man who was given a terminal cancer diagnosis over 25 years ago, he's still going strong, living on one of the Scottish islands I believe. Remarkable story about Dr Peterson's wife. Is it possible that Tammy was deliberately misdiagnosed to scare her, given all the hostility towards the Petersons in Canada ? As I understand it, Tammy then suffered iatrogenic damage to her lymphatic system, which had to be treated in the USA. I hope she is fully recovered now. When both our parents have passed, we certainly then become far more aware of our own mortality. There's a part of me that would love to sit down with an actuary to get a realistic life expectancy estimate ! This was a brilliant discussion, so much valuable information and advice here. Thanks to Dr Langer and to Dr Peterson as ever.

On mindfulness ~ someone presented to me fairly early in life an exercise on mindfulness.
I was told to try, when looking at a thing; to forget it's associated name and everything you "know" about it first.
Today I also associate a state mindfulness as a state of being mentally unburdened. To me it is a physically tangible state.
I also find that there are always people that find that state in someone threatening. I have never felt the need to seek a better indicator of questionable morality than the presence of unease towards a person in a state of mindfulness.

Loved this episode !! Really spoke to a lot of beautiful insights. I believe that Dr. Peterson and Dr Joe Dispenza would have a rather interesting if not eye opening conversation on similar topics. I’m here for it as I’m sure many others would be as well!!

Mindfulness in the time being when interacting with others is caring, selfless, and respect❤ and there time to be mindless intentionally to shut off yourself from stresses of life and to find peace for yourself alone and alone.

Thanks for these great conversations. I especially love hearing the psychological expertise from JP, & another psychological expert creates wonderful exploration.
JP's woodpile harkens back to early Russell Brand news. 😁

I think Dr. Langer is on to something. Thank you Dr. Peterson for sharing this great conversation!
Also, i really liked JBP’s explanation on what is mindfulness- “paying attention to what you are paying attention to”.

Great interview! Thank you both of you! The points about research are exactly what Dr. Katy Mullis described in his book Dancing Naked in the Mind Field! When the research is aligned with your salary, the result of the research is compromised!

Tell that to the 10,000 people are were swept away by the flood recently in Libya. It would not seem as profound to them I imagine.

Of course, wars, natural disaster, grief… are tragedy then how can we improve the moment if we can or how can we help children and elders in these situations.
