One of my favorite episodes of the series not only for the expanding lore and spot-on comedic writing but for how well it captured some of the real quirks and challenges of being a kid on the cusp of adolescence. The writers don't unfairly chastise Dipper over his idealized romantic life with Wendy when the truth comes out. They allow him to have a moment of catharsis to air out all his anxieties over his attraction he knows is nothing more than a fantasy. No more playful jabs by Mabel or jokes about it. Just a sincere moment to acknowledge the situation he finds himself in. And the best part is that Wendy doesn't chastise or belittle Dipper for revealing his crush on her. She lets him speak his mind and acknowledge his personal troubles before helping him close the door on that fantasy he had created. Best of all is that she tells Dipper, in no uncertain terms, that just because the romantic relationship will never happen doesn't mean their friendship will be impacted. They are both able to overcome that awkward, one-sided crush phase and move forward with a healthier dynamic than before. It's a far better underlying moral than most western cartoons that either play up the whole scenario for laughs or punish one side so much for feeling that way that it stops being funny and becomes painful to watch. Thankfully, they also didn't allow the situation to continue for longer than it had to and allow unnecessary teen romance drama to engulf the rest of the show ( *cough* SVTFOE *cough* ).

Most of us know how much it hurts when a crush gets rejected. But I love how gently Wendy let Dipper down, specifically in saying she's too old for him. If she'd said he's too young for her, it would've made him feel much worse.
12:48 As Montana started to pick up on, Wendy figured out that shapeshifter took on the appearance of the man on a placement product. Because, why would some guy from a bean company be isolated down here? Dipper speculated that the bunker was sealed off for decades, but the can is old enough that it has a greyed photograph of the man on it, and the only person down here just HAPPENS to resemble him as if it were taken recently? It’s from a company that has either changed its logo in more recent years, or is long gone. The dread that ran down Wendy’s face when she realized Mabel had locked them in with someone who wasn’t who they claimed was chilling, my stomach dropped on the initial watch years ago. It’s hard to explain, but plot points that rely on temporal dissonance always fascinate me, cuz they only become unnerving when we’re faced with information that suggests that something unfolded ages before, but we thought they happened more recently. I ask this coz if you pay attention, Dipper is WAY more consistently and habitually selfish than Mabel. She has a few bad episodes like the Boyz Crazy and one or two others, but I would say at least half the episodes of the show involve some bit of storyline involving Dipper's ego being a problem and him needing to learn to get over it. In fact, I think it's so much a standard part of the show it kind of fades into the background for a lot of people, whereas Mabel's really selfish episodes are outliers so they stand out more.
I can't wait for you guys to get to see more of the famous Beeple McBattle in the later episodes of season 2, I love the way they animate his beepling and mcbattling
The reason the kids have 4 fingers and the adults 5 is because of the art style where everyone has proportionately large hands/fingers (because it's easier to animate). If you add an extra digit it makes their hands look too wide so they cut it down by removing a finger. If you drew their hands with realistic proportions you could draw the kids to have 5 fingers, but tiny skinny fingers are just difficult to draw and look weird in this cartoony style.
Oh I see. This must be the episode people were talking about a while back that made them dislike Mable. Personally, I've always given her a pass cause she's so young and probably saw a trope like that in some dumb romcom, the kind where it worked out in the end. Kids do stuff like that all the time, where they act based off of stuff in movies and expect it to go well in real life. And at least she realized it was wrong in the end. I understand why people are mad at her though. Her actions had consequences, and Dipper deserved better. Still, I personally don't find it affecting my overall view of her character.
*I say the Shapeshifter deserved a better fate. He was treated poorly by *[REDACTED]* and was frozen for all of eternity. The Shapeshifter was the DEFINITION of loss potential. If there was a season 3, we probably would’ve returned
Everyone should give that fan episode that was created by Keyan Carlile on TH-cam a shot, only if you finished the series though. It’s called Return to the Bunker and provides resolution for the Shapeshifter. For a fan-made work, it really feels like a GF episode.
@@JollyMcCrownerThe Shape shifter is too dangerous of an organism to be left unfrozen. It enjoys stealing the forms of different creatures bodies and harming them. It deserved to be frozen.
I have never liked the whole unrequited love trope. My heart wrenches for Dipper because I've been there too, but he really did need to let her go. If there's one gripe I really have with the show is they really don't want Dipper to be human, they just want him to let go of his emotions and his Hang-Ups at the drop of a hat, he's a kid with far too much maturity to the point where it just feels totally unrealistic, and I always find myself wanting to give the poor little dude a hug.
I like how if you pay attention, the way the shapeshifter mimics Dipper before he's frozen is reused later when Dipper turns into a wood statue. I don't remember if it's reused a third time later or not.
I ❤ how it is so similar to TOH in terms of the ‘shapeshifter’ (the basilisks) they usually have slit-like eyes and blink sideways! (It’s also like that in she-ra with double trouble)
i can't believe they totally bought the fact that the guy is the author we waited a whole season just to find out the deal with the vending machine, you think the biggest mystry would be delivered to us in a silver plate this early ?
I think what people tend to react poorly to about Mabel is she's egocentric (not selfish, except in a couple of episodes), she's always trying to help but she does so by trying to give people things she herself would want. Dipper's awkward around a crush? Well she would want romance, so she tries to push romance on him. Stan's afraid of heights? She's not afraid so let's force him to be not afraid. It's frustrating, but importantly, it's also a TOTALLY NORMAL part of being a kid. She and Dipper are two of the most accurate renderings of actual kids I've seen in media, and that means they can be selfish and obnoxious sometimes. Also, are we really giving Montana a genius point for just understanding the thing the show told you was happening? Really? 🤔🤔🤔
That's called "selfish" even though she does everything with "good intentions" she still puts people around her in danger for her own fun. Being a little selfish is normal for a kid, being selfish Mabel's level is crossing the line.
Mabel is a charismatic person, were she not that charismatic a lot of people would not like her I like her too but also I am aware of what I don't like about her, at least I do like to think a future Mabel would look back at some stuff she did that summer and agree that that was not great (this being one of those instances)
She can't change, until Alex realizes that Mabel is flawed character and needs development, because the only thing we got so far is comic, where Mabel realizes how selfish she was this entire summer and decides to pay attention to Dipper more, but the same thing happened in episode "Sock Opera" and Mabel learned nothing.
dipper's confession is so well written, and i wish other shows (*cough* adventure time) handled childhood crushes like this. i also wish we saw more episodes with wendy in them
One thing that is interesting is that in Gravity Falls the age gap between Wendy and Dipper stops them having a relationship but in Avatar the age gap between Katara and Aang is very similar Dipper and Aang are both 12 Katara is 14 and Wendy is 15 it goes to show the effect the framing of stories has on our perception of very similar scenarios.
Well, we might persue that differently cause GF plays in modern times and Avatar in a more ancient time period. Also considering the war and being frozen, Aang is very wise and mature for his age, so him and Katara are more on the same level I would say.
Plus, Dipper is close to turning 13, so it's even less of an age gap. At least until Wendy turns 16. Then it's basically back to normal. Haha. Of course, that does pose an issue for their relationship once Wendy turns 18, at least in Oregon/California. In most US states and most countries, the age of consent is 15.
@@adamisajoker Imagine if Dipper had taken the ball rebound for Wendy (in the time traveler episode) and then Wendy would end up making a remark about wanting to see how things would go in 6 years.
I remember this episode gave me nightmares as a kid. It was so horrifying, specifically the Mabel-Dipper monster and Dipper’s “last shape” was TERRIFYING TO ME Still love this episode though. Great reaction as usual! This episode makes me love Wendy more than I already did, she’s so cool
I'd be lying if I said I didn't know what Dipper was going through. 8 or 9 years ago, I had a somewhat similar experience. It's not something I like to bring up, but it was a day I learned one of life’s harder lessons, Emotions are risky game, but the worst move one could make is to not play at all.
To be fair, they're currently teens (more or less). Of course, Wendy is the one who is older, so she would still have more experience to work with to reduce potential problems.
My parents are 9 years apart but they met in their 30s when they were both already matured and financially stable. Dipper and Wendy could work out as a couple when they're older, not at the time of the show tho.
I think age is not a factor, is more about compatibility and another things , is really complex to explain but there are many relations with many years of difference
One thing I’ve never understood is if the shapeshifter remembers what the author looks like, why transform into the bean can guy? If he knew they didn’t know what the guy looks like then why not use the actual guy or does his image need to be in front of him to shape shift accurately?
Spoiler kinda: Likely because the showrunners didn't want to show off the authors appearance this early into the season. They probably could have played it in a way that still made his later appearance impactful, but its probably best to not make the idea so explicit. In universe, I saw another commenter mention how the shapeshifter hadn't seen the author for 30 years, and it might not retain appearances for that long.
G.F finds new ways to be wonderfully disturbing! This episode gave me horrible flashbacks to that 80s horror film with Kurt Russell, The Thing. Later I found out on the audio commentary, that movie was the inspiration for the episode!
now that i think about it, if the shapeshifter worked directly with the author of the journals, why wouldn’t it take the form of the real author? for the prolonged mystery, sure, but i wonder if there was an in-universe reason.
The shapeshifter said so itself. “That 6-finger nerd hasn’t been himself in 30 years.” If it’s been 30 years since the shapeshifter saw the Author, he probably forgot the proper details of the Author’s face.
how did you guys not even react when the shapeshifter turned himself into dipper screaming when he froze to death, thats the most messed up stuff ever, imagine dipper seeing himself screaming and crying while freezing solid infront of his own eyes
Around the previous episode I (and others) began to wonder if the Disney executives were actually watching this show. Season one wasn't so occasionally dark and terrifying.
Private AOT Update: Letts react, do you want to know what the ending lyrics of AOT special 2 is? The music is called "TO YOU,IN 2000 OR 20,000 YEARS". The montana genius counter going up after she said the bean man is the shapeshifter killed me because in the least offensive way possible yall were just being brain dead before
Bad sibling behavior is Mabel's thing. Mabel usually redeems herself eventually but she is not half as moral as Dipper who's darkest moments are less frequent than Mabel and not half as bad.
Maybe not as frequent but in some just as messed up. He does lead others into life threatening situations they don’t need to get into like this episode or the Gobblewonker episode. And while pursuing Wendy he was willing to routinely use supernatural powers to mess with her personal life, not unlike Gideon who also tried to do the same for Mabel. Not that I’m less a Dipper fan, he’s a great character. Just saying that the Pines Family are a flawed group. Heck my favorite character is Stan and he’s probably the most flawed member of the family
@@johnmartin4119And even the most flawed character gets his hero moment, by sacrificing his own memory to save his family, Mabel on other hand, didn't even felt any guilt for causing weirdmaggedon
@@Rayni_XZ.o Mabel was tricked and kept out of the loop about the rift. I feel if she knew she was gonna cause weirdmaggedon or that she was dealing with Bill she wouldn’t have. Plus she also helped in the final battle too and risked her life, even telling Ford not to make a deal with Bill when her life was on the line. I grant her heroics aren’t as epic as Stan’s but once she left Mabel Land she did help out. She even was able to use her scrapbook to save Stan from loosing all his memories
@@johnmartin4119 Dipper didn't know what he'll raise all of the dead, he just wanted to show agents that his journal is real, that still doesn't excuse him outta responsibility for his actions, so is Mabel, people wouldn't hate her too much if she would really just apologize and face consequences at least, but no, she didn't apologized, she wanted to stay in bubble Bill made, even though she already knew there was weirdmaggedon outside, and don't forget that she was really bout to throw Dipper out of her bubble, because again, she didn't wanted to leave her fantasy.
@@Rayni_XZ.o Soos and Wendy also fell for the temptations of the bubble and ignored the apocalypse to do whatever they want. And Mabel still chose to destroy Mabel land and return to help. As for Dipper even if he didn’t know how many zombies he would raise, he still chose that spell over several others. And there are time Dipper didn’t apologize either, like enabling Mabel to get get involved in the golf people’s rivalry or when he accidentally released the Lumberjack ghost after he was tricked, or for almost deciding to let Bill steal the deed to the shack, or for brainwashing Soos in the Mayor campaign episode. Again I grant that Dipper does vocally apologize more than Mabel but Dipper’s not perfect all the time
Im sorry. I love you guys but the mental gymnastics you both went through to not understand that the can of beans was a reveal that he just stole the appearance of a human to lure them in is hilarious.
this is the only episode mabel did something "bad". everyone else who hates her beyond this episode is just being ridiculous. she is 12. entertaining the idea of dipper and wendy and hating mabel for it is to me, far more ridiculous , but theres a large chunk of people who really hate her throughout the entire show
@@valentinkambushev4968 that was completely reactionary to yet another ridiculous and fully out-of-his-age idea that dipper had. she reacted in any normal way a 12 year old girl would react if her only partner in life was fully ready to flip her life upside down without thinking it through
@@valentinkambushev4968 SPOILERS AHEAD! Idk how to say what I wanna say in coded language haha, sorry! If you're talking about the creation of Dippy Fresh, I never really understand why people get so upset about that. Obviously it's not the perfect thing to do in that situation, especially when we know that the real dipper eventually shows up, but she's only twelve. She thought her brother was abandoning her, and almost immediately she was placed in a magical paradise where she could create anything she wanted, so she made herself a Dipper who wouldn't abandon her. If you're talking about her choice to live in a perfect fantasy world in general, the theoretical validity of utopias is a topic I'm pretty sure hardcore philosophers debate and write essays about n stuff, so idk how to even begin judging Mabel either way on her choice there haha. I think the main reason ppl have a hard time clicking with Mabel is that her storyline boils down to "you can't be a child forever, you need to grow up eventually", while dipper's boils down to "you don't need to grow up all at once, it's okay to enjoy childhood". The twins are two different extremes, but because we're way closer to dipper's extreme ourselves (I'm assuming we're a fair chunk older than twelve) it seems less extreme and much more natural. (Sry if this came across as confrontational or anything, that isn't my intent at all, I just rly like analysing media :3 /gen)
The penultimate episode is the one where she annoyed me much more than this one although this one a bit too. But it's mostly the writing. I feel like they went full on character writing and forgot that character writing must still be coherent plot wise. In this one while Mabel annoys me, it at least makes sense both from a character and plot perspective so I never had a dislike of her because of it.
Until it's officially denied by Alex I firmly believe that Dipper and Wendy got together after they got a bit older. A 3 year age difference is weird and seems like a lot when they're at that age but when Dipper hits 18 or 20, that's nothing.
Wendy and Dipper’s age gap isn’t super huge. I really don’t think that’s why they shouldn’t be together. They just have no romantic chemistry and I think they make much better friends than romantic partners.
@@notcha8080 Our lives are long. I'm not saying they have to go out the next year. But when she's 24 and he's 21, is that so weird? Modern age discourse got people going nuts over nothing.

13:00 they mentioned there is a shapeshifter inside and this is the conclusion you guys end up with.....it's kinda impressive
In my heart, he's off with the Heartstomper living his best life 😔❤️
@@hanabishaven yep, but -it isn’t canon- *IT’S 100% CANON IM NOT LYING, YOU ARE* Also, what heart?
@@JollyMcCrownerThe Shape shifter is too dangerous of an organism to be left unfrozen. It enjoys stealing the forms of different creatures bodies and harming them. It deserved to be frozen.
The Author didn't freeze the gnomes whatsoever. The Shapeshifter was ultimately just a standout unrepentant threat.

I love how you unintentionally giva all these nicknames to bill XD
I have never liked the whole unrequited love trope. My heart wrenches for Dipper because I've been there too, but he really did need to let her go. If there's one gripe I really have with the show is they really don't want Dipper to be human, they just want him to let go of his emotions and his Hang-Ups at the drop of a hat, he's a kid with far too much maturity to the point where it just feels totally unrealistic, and I always find myself wanting to give the poor little dude a hug.
12:51 “he makes his own beans?” Lmfaoooooo
Alex Hirsch said that Bill can see through anything that bears his image, i.e. triangles.
11:18 I’m literally screaming on the inside rn
I'm just like. WOW.
I love how you say they wouldn’t give mark hamil a small role when mark loves taking small fun roles
"He makes his own beans? Why is that a problem?" ....................Seriously? 🤦♂
I died with “he makes his own beans?”
I feel like you guys would love scooby-doo mystery incorporated, the overarching plot is so good
Lol, slowest uptake on the dude being the shapeshifter ^^
I like how if you pay attention, the way the shapeshifter mimics Dipper before he's frozen is reused later when Dipper turns into a wood statue. I don't remember if it's reused a third time later or not.
I ❤ how it is so similar to TOH in terms of the ‘shapeshifter’ (the basilisks) they usually have slit-like eyes and blink sideways! (It’s also like that in she-ra with double trouble)
I've been waiting for this episode it's so good!
I have been waiting for pretty much every episode (even the worst ones have something I want to see them react to).
ah yes, the episode where dipper gets trauma
isn't that just every episode of this season ? 🤔
i can't believe they totally bought the fact that the guy is the author
we waited a whole season just to find out the deal with the vending machine, you think the biggest mystry would be delivered to us in a silver plate this early ?
I love waking up to this series on a Wednesday(Australian). Always gives me something good to watch when I’m eating breakfast
Another CRAZY episode! Welcome to season 2, guys!
7:17 green m&n smiling at me
Mabel is a charismatic person, were she not that charismatic a lot of people would not like her
I like her too but also I am aware of what I don't like about her, at least I do like to think a future Mabel would look back at some stuff she did that summer and agree that that was not great (this being one of those instances)
"maybe he's a bean manufacturer" 😭😭😭😭
"Scientists can't make beans!"
I'm dead! 😂😂😂
dipper's confession is so well written, and i wish other shows (*cough* adventure time) handled childhood crushes like this. i also wish we saw more episodes with wendy in them
One thing that is interesting is that in Gravity Falls the age gap between Wendy and Dipper stops them having a relationship but in Avatar the age gap between Katara and Aang is very similar Dipper and Aang are both 12 Katara is 14 and Wendy is 15 it goes to show the effect the framing of stories has on our perception of very similar scenarios.
It was so horrifying, specifically the Mabel-Dipper monster and Dipper’s “last shape” was TERRIFYING TO ME
Still love this episode though. Great reaction as usual! This episode makes me love Wendy more than I already did, she’s so cool
In animation especially Disney they often animate adults with 5 fingers and kids with 4.
Dipper and Wendy are actually only 2 and a half-ish years apart in age.
11:23 you guys uncovering the actual plot on the wrong character is so funny to me 😂
I'd be lying if I said I didn't know what Dipper was going through.
8 or 9 years ago, I had a somewhat similar experience.
It's not something I like to bring up, but it was a day I learned one of life’s harder lessons,
Emotions are risky game, but the worst move one could make is to not play at all.
The Shapeshifter is like some kinda salute to John Carpenter’s The Thing
5:59 sometimes I wish I was a actual lumberjack lol those games are so cool looking
The age difference between Dipper and Wendy is less than the age difference between my parents, and they're still together after 40 years.
A bean farmer LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One thing I’ve never understood is if the shapeshifter remembers what the author looks like, why transform into the bean can guy? If he knew they didn’t know what the guy looks like then why not use the actual guy or does his image need to be in front of him to shape shift accurately?
Spoiler kinda:
Likely because the showrunners didn't want to show off the authors appearance this early into the season. They probably could have played it in a way that still made his later appearance impactful, but its probably best to not make the idea so explicit. In universe, I saw another commenter mention how the shapeshifter hadn't seen the author for 30 years, and it might not retain appearances for that long.
Thanks to the experimental xero the journal copy is perfect, I think. (with UV)
also if you didn't know, Dana Terrace, the creator of The Owl House was a storyboard artist and did a bunch of animation on gravity falls too.
Btw, the season 1 finale was called "Gideon Rises". This episode is "Into the Bunker". Just little typos I've noticed in those two reactions. 😉
G.F finds new ways to be wonderfully disturbing!
This episode gave me horrible flashbacks to that 80s horror film with Kurt Russell, The Thing. Later I found out on the audio commentary, that movie was the inspiration for the episode!
Now I feel robbed that there is no Beeple McBattle
Legit one of the creepiest episodes of a children's show I've seen. This would've given me the worst nightmares as a kid.
This episode about bean manufacturer is my favourite
Ok because major age difference relationships don't exist.....they are absolutely perfect for each other. Dipper just needs to be 18 and try again.
It’s funny because Wendy’s only like 3 years older than him
now that i think about it, if the shapeshifter worked directly with the author of the journals, why wouldn’t it take the form of the real author? for the prolonged mystery, sure, but i wonder if there was an in-universe reason.
The shapeshifter said so itself.
“That 6-finger nerd hasn’t been himself in 30 years.”
If it’s been 30 years since the shapeshifter saw the Author, he probably forgot the proper details of the Author’s face.
Beeple McBattle is now the only name I will call Bill Cypher
how did you guys not even react when the shapeshifter turned himself into dipper screaming when he froze to death, thats the most messed up stuff ever, imagine dipper seeing himself screaming and crying while freezing solid infront of his own eyes
I never crushed on anyone older than. But having work with teens and preteens, i have had younger ladies crush on me. Its a very awkward situation.
Oh, I can't wait for next episode....
Wendy is only 3 years older than Dipper lol. Cartoon logic aside they could definitely work if they were both older
Yesss finallyy
Think they'll guess who F is? These guys are usually quite good at putting together the clues.
Around the previous episode I (and others) began to wonder if the Disney executives were actually watching this show. Season one wasn't so occasionally dark and terrifying.
Cus season one was on Disney Channel (targeted at younger audience) while season 2 aired on Disney XD (for a bit older kids, like 10-12 years old)
I disagree with most Mable slander but this episode is hard to defend
Private AOT Update: Letts react, do you want to know what the ending lyrics of AOT special 2 is? The music is called "TO YOU,IN 2000 OR 20,000 YEARS". I said Post credit scene and cliffhanger Ending for a Reason. I know what your gonna say like "wow, this user has top secret info that nobody else has".
Again I grant that Dipper does vocally apologize more than Mabel but Dipper’s not perfect all the time
They are only 3 years.
Next you should react to the inspiration of this episode, The Thing.
8:25
Im sorry. I love you guys but the mental gymnastics you both went through to not understand that the can of beans was a reveal that he just stole the appearance of a human to lure them in is hilarious.
This episode was originally alot more....fan service....than what The Creator ended up making because Disney Censorship
With Wendy out of the way, now for the true ship of the series -- Dipper x Mabel pinecest! 🤣
No way, Dipcifica
this is the only episode mabel did something "bad". everyone else who hates her beyond this episode is just being ridiculous. she is 12. entertaining the idea of dipper and wendy and hating mabel for it is to me, far more ridiculous , but theres a large chunk of people who really hate her throughout the entire show
What about a certain thing she did in one of the last episodes?
@@valentinkambushev4968 that was completely reactionary to yet another ridiculous and fully out-of-his-age idea that dipper had. she reacted in any normal way a 12 year old girl would react if her only partner in life was fully ready to flip her life upside down without thinking it through
@@ivanzamarripa9393 I wasn't talking about this. I was talking about the stuff she did in that round place dedicated to her.
React to Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts or Amphibia after Gravity Falls ends.
React to Assassination Classroom as your next anime series.
Until it's officially denied by Alex I firmly believe that Dipper and Wendy got together after they got a bit older. A 3 year age difference is weird and seems like a lot when they're at that age but when Dipper hits 18 or 20, that's nothing.
Well too bad, because Dipper/Pacifica are officially canon, even in amphibia
@@Rayni_XZ.o Okay, is there a source for that?
@@FluffyJackie Also the whole canon comic with Dipper and Pacifica together.
Wendy and Dipper’s age gap isn’t super huge. I really don’t think that’s why they shouldn’t be together. They just have no romantic chemistry and I think they make much better friends than romantic partners.
They're only like 2 1/2 - 3 years apart. Never say never.
2.5-3 years is *ages* when you're a tween/teen. In, like, 5 or 10 years, though? Yeah, that's not that bad.
you're weird.. that's too far for their age range. wendy could easily be a high school sophomore while dipper is in 7th grade bro. get help
@@notcha8080might not sound like much, but it is a big gap in their current ages. Like which 15-year-old teen would ever date a 12-year-old child?

Funny how great Wendy is in this episode and how awful Mabel is.
I was just thinking about how weird it would be in real life for a 22 y-o man to carry a 12-year-old girl on his shoulders (the scene where Soos does it with Mable). But if they design the 12-year-old girl with such small body looking like a 5 y-o... No, it's still weird.
Nothing is weird about that, when I were 12, my 20 y.o cousin always carried me on his shoulders.
