That Big Henry death scene was so randomly dramatic, it's somehow both hilarious and heartbreaking. Fun fact, this whole sequence was written by Matt Braly, who went on to create Amphibia, often considered a sister show of The Owl House.
Mabel's maturity in this episode really warmed my heart. She didn't have to be that nice to Pacifica, hell, she didn't even have to tolerate her past saving her, but she was her usual nice self even to someone who was so mean to her. And the thing is, her being nice to Pacifica and showing kindness to her broke some of Pacifica's walls down, and revealed a new side of her.

He was a 19-year-old from New Jersey convicted of theft and sentenced to hard labor building the C&O Railroad in Virginia in 1866 in absolutely horrendous conditions. They were developing steel-powered drills at the time that were used alongside the manual laborers, and John Henry actually did win a race against one of the drills as in the song, but collapsed and died as a result. The song - spread in large part thanks to the need for tunnellers to work in rhythm with each other - reminded workers to slow down or die in the tunnels, and was also used as a form of protest.
Actually, the more likely cause of death was Silicosis, which is caused by inhaling silica dust for long periods of time and since he was technically a convict, the "white house" he was buried behind in the song would actually most like a unmarked ditch in the virgina penitentiary along with other prisoners who were worked to death building the railroads
It was great seeing both Mabel get some character development and Pacifica show there's more to her than a "walking one dimensional bleach blonde valley girl stereotype. But my favorite part of "The Golf War" has to be the Big Henry scene. It was completely absent from the original script and added by Matt Braly. I like to think this was practice for how he'd go on to hit us right in the feels again and again in his own show, _Amphibia._ A moment of silence for Big Henry.
The Big Henry joke is one of my favourite in the series. It's just such a funny contrast. And it gets further points for fully committing and not showing him again before the end.
This episode is fantastic not only from a comedic angle (Big Henry's sacrifice still makes me crack up) but also from a character perspective as well. We get chances to see both Dipper and Mabel's views towards Pacifica, a rival that has been nothing but antagonistic to them in the most petty ways since they met. Dipper, in his blunt and mostly logical manor, only views Pacifica as a rich bully that has targeted his sister and used her privilege to get away with it, so enlisting the Lilliputtians to even the odds seems fair in a karmic sense. Meanwhile, Mabel is more emotional and spontaneous regarding Pacifica and the events throughout their mini-golf adventure. While she does instigate their late-night match by angrily calling her out for being the walking embodiment of every blonde-haired mean girl in kids movies, she also doesn't let that anger completely derail her morals and empathetic nature later on. She's initially hesitant to cheat to win, attempts to be peacemaker among the different groups on the warpath for the sticker, and even forms a non-hostile partnership with Pacifica to escape. Best of all, though, is her willingness to still share and extend a kind offer of friendship to her rival. But the real star in terms of character moments is Pacifica herself. In season one she was just the stereotypical rich bully that we'd seen many times across many different series. There seemed to be little there to indicate she would be nothing more than that. Then this episode comes around and we start getting glimpses into what life with her obscenely rich and image-driven parents is like. Unlike Grunkle Stan offering Mabel heartfelt words of encouragement before the mini-golf match, neither Preston or Priscilla have any caring thought to give their daughter before dropping her off and promptly leaving for a high-society event. Only a threat to not lose or embarrass the family name. The old saying of "you can choose your friends but you can't choose your family" has a darker meaning for her as we start understanding the toxic influences she's been living under. So for Pacifica to not only help out Dipper and Mabel in their escape from the golf course but also accept Mabel's friendly offer to ride home when her parents didn't come to pick her up must have been a remarkable act for her. And if Preston had heard her tell Mabel and Dipper she honestly had fun with them tonight he probably would have punished her for daring to show signs of apparent emotional weakness. In her own way, Pacifica has started down her own path of improvement and growth beyond what her parents would have her be. I'm interested to see what you two will have to say on the next episode focused on her.

I always liked this episode especially because at first it seemed like it was going to be another Dipper versus maple sibling rivalry thing. But instead it turned out being Mable versus Pacifica and she winds up getting a little bit of character development at the end.
The liliputtians, are a parody of the race from the classic novel Gullivers travels, the Lilliputians. Who were tiny to Gullivers giant. They were also one of the four races that Gulliver encountered in his travels. Which nobody believed was real.
I love how Kenny’s explanation of Patton Oswald wasn’t Remy from ratatouille, it was his obscure role as a side character in one episode of parks and Rec 😂😂
My dad and I used to sing the old folk song about John Henry when I was a kid. The story goes that he was an African American working in the age of industrialization laying down railroads. The work was hard and thankless, but at least it was something. Then a businessman came selling a machine that could supposedly lay railroads faster than any human. John Henry's community was dismayed by this, as it would take what little income they had from them. So John Henry challenged the businessman to a race -- and if John Henry won, it would prove that humans were still better than machine. He poured his all into the race, overworking his body to keep his lead. He won, but collapsed and died afterwards. John Henry was hailed as a hero by his community and there have been songs and movies written about him. He's a big part of American folk lore like Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan.

Genuinely one of my favourite episodes. To the hilariously over the top concept of the little creatures controlling the ball inside the things to some genuine growth, humility and humanity shining through from Pacifica and the usual Gravity Falls comedy and charm makes a fantastic episode

I forgot this episode came so early in the season. The minor hole and Big Henry was so dramatic and tragic compaired not only to this more light hearted episode, but everything that happened i. The show ....so far (not necisssrly compired to what is to come). Moving on Episodes like these, where we get clear infications of the twins growing up and growing up right are nice.
