I’m pretty sure Boston originated the concept of colors (by themselves, at least in the US) representing entire lines/branches/services on a Metropolitan Rail Transit system. The 1960s were the perfect time to do so; as color photos, color prints and color film/television became affordable, ubiquitous and commonplace. I love how Chicago adopted it in the 1990s but I feel as if they went a bit overboard with using pastels (Purple & Pink! Really?) and shades (Brown being used on the Ravenswood instead of Yellow is criminal; the Skokie Swift should have gotten Salmon or Pink as a branch off the main Red Line from Howard.)
