    Thanks ! Never knew there was such a cool metro system in Boston. To bad however it looks like everything is 30 years old. Cities outside the US would be proud to have such a nice mass transit system and would spend money on making it look more up to date.

      For instance, the Rotterdam metro opened in 1968 so thats comparable to the Boston system but look what some new trains a a bit of paint can do : th-cam.com/video/l55IT4qIrig/w-d-xo.html (Thx Timosha21 , great stuff)

    • @timosha21
      @timosha21  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      in fairness you need to compare boston to a comparable size (check that box) but also the age of the system - Boston is over 100 years old. Still does not excuse the facts that you raised but its important to take perspective.

    • @ageoflove1980
      @ageoflove1980 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah ok, misread your discription. It says indeed that the colors were assigned in 1965, the system itself is much older, so sorry for that. Just a shame that such a nice system could really be the pride of the city with a little love.

      Right now there are brand new red and orange line trains on order from CRRC. The first pilot orange line train is in testing and the new trains should be replacing all of the older ones over the next few years.

    • @ageoflove1980
      @ageoflove1980 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah thats great. I must say, these older trains do have its charm, but people will feel much more comfortable and save if everything looks well taken care of.

    As of May 2023. The Orange Line Hawker Siddeley 1200s have retired on Ausust 2022. At that time a total of 72 of the CRRC 1400s are on active fleet. So there are still 50 of the Hawker Siddeley 1200s at Wellington Yard and Forest Hills Yard. The Red Line Pullman Standard 1500s and 1600s do still remain In Service to this day as of May 2023, there now 54 Years old. The T did get new cars for the Red Line from CRRC only 12.

    The blue line deserves more attention

    • @MichaelBSmall-jx7zo
      @MichaelBSmall-jx7zo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is talk of expanding the blue line. Rolling stock is pretty much new, and a lot of stations are now renovated. Blue Line though does have a lot of untapped potential. At the very least, get into Lynn, or maybe even put a spur out Chelsea way. They could even “share” some track and station space with commuter rail for some of the closer suburbs (would mean some construction and modification) but would mean less changing trains if you just get right on the T at your stop instead of dealing with the purple line when you are not super far out. Would increase ridership and possibly ease congestion.

    • @mrchunkymonkey5

      Looks like the blue line has at-grade crossings, so overhead power lines are needed.

    • @thebobs7385
      @thebobs7385 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mrchunkymonkey5 There are no at-grade crossings on the 3 heavy rail lines (Blue, Orange, Red). The ONLY rapid transit system I know of that uses third rails and has car/pedestrian crossings is Chicago. Chicago has at-grade crossings on the Yellow, Purple, and Brown lines and I think the Blue and Pink lines near their terminals.
      The Blue Line uses third rail from Bowdoin Station to Airport Station and then switches to overhead catenary because of proximity to the ocean (which could cause third rail icing problems in winter.) There are videos here on TH-cam that show this process. The third rail pickup shoes are raised at Airport at the same time as the pantagraph goes up (on the outbound side) and the reverse happens on the inbound side.
      The Green Line is actually light rail running underground in Boston through the Boylston Street, Huntington Avenue, and Tremont Street subways (similar to Philadelphia's subway-surface line, Buffalo's line, and San Francisco's Muni Metro.) Park Street and Boylston Street stations are the two oldest stations in Boston and in America, having opened in 1897. From 1901 to 1909 the Main Line elevated also ran through these stations, making them also the oldest underground full subway stations in America. The elevated trains were moved one block to the east when the Washington Street tunnel opened in 1909 and the Tremont Street subway reverted to all streetcar (now light rail) use.
      Boston has 3 different sized rapid transit cars because the lines were built at different times and with different designs. The Orange Line used cars that were typical of other elevated systems like New York. The Red Line was built later, opening in 1912, and it was designed with larger, wider cars. The Blue Line was the first tunnel anywhere to go underneath part of the ocean (Boston Harbor) and originally carried trolleys. When it was converted to trains in the 1920's they had to be built short and narrow to fit into those tunnels with the tight clearances and curves. That is the case right up to today. Blue Line cars have 2 doors per side; Orange line cars have 3 doors and Red Line cars (the old Blue Bird and the current Bombardier fleet) 4 doors per side (the 1500/1600/1700 series used 3 doors and that has not been good practice on this busy line.) The newer CRRC cars on order will, I believe, also have 4 doors per side.
      The Green Line B branch exits the Boylston Street subway after Kenmore and runs in a reserved median on Commonwealth Avenue all the way to Boston College.
      Similarly, the C branch operates in the middle of Beacon Street all the way to Cleveland Circle (adjacent to Reservoir station on the D branch).
      The E branch operates in the middle of Huntington Avenue to Brigham Circle and then runs in the middle of the street, in mixed traffic to Heath Street/VA Medical Center.
      The D branch is what is called "light rail rapid transit" and it operates in a reserved [surface] right-of-way, from Kenmore all the way to Riverside with stations every mile or so. There is only 1 "crossing" on this branch and that is a pedestrian-only crossing that has been opened up through some conservation land located between Chestnut Hill and Newton Centre (spelled that way - not a typo) stations.

      TheBobs and green and blue lines are the same gauge oddly enough.

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheBobs this is way too complicated a description. The green line functions like a subway line. The original model the green line evolved from was exactly like the Subway-Surface routes, but it now has only a very small street running section and there are only a handful of stations that still don’t have a shelter. The green line today is more akin to an elevated line or cut and cover line except that it’s running in the street median in many places And in some places it doesn’t even need the median, as parts of the C and all of the D line are located near small parking areas and are in woodsy areas. And on the other end of the line where it’s above ground it uses a traditional el before touching down at a surface-level terminal. Even the PCC extension of the Red line runs as a rapid transit line, with the Red Line past ashmont essentially assuming the same character as those wooded sections of the green line. The silver line I would say is completely different and more like a premium but but all 4 subway lines today are operated as rapid transit, even the small street running section (which basically never makes stops, it usually just runs to the Heath terminal where the dedicated RoW returns).

      Kevin Black take a look at the new red line and orange line they are on TH-cam the blue line is already new also look at the new green line trains. Now the orange line trains now is about 37-38 years old the red line three door trains are about 48-49 years old and the four door red line is about 18-20 years old so the whole line will be updated with new cars late this year and 2022.
