  • In this video I give my best shot at figuring out a better solution for drill press dust collection. I've tried many different methods and never been fully satisfied with how they have worked, so we are going to figure out a better way today.

    Box was a little banged up, but the product was still in perfect condition th-cam.com/users/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . Easy to set up. Easy to use. It has an extended height vertical shaft with a holder for Dremel bits and a hook to hang one of the hanging type Dremel motors. I chose not to use that, so it's easy to keep it short and simple. The Dremel fastens in by removing the threaded collar for attachments and then setting it in the fixture and there's a threaded collar in this stand and a wrench to tighten it. It works well, but I don't think I want to routinely take it on and off again to use the Dremel by hand. I'll buy another Dremel and keep the current one in this fixture.

    That’s some great work. Between this and the magnet connector video, I’m now reorganizing and finalizing my hose set-up.
    I like how you made the viewing window box smaller than the holder piece by a little more than the 2 5/8” spindle travel depth, so you don’t limit your depth travel. Then using bar magnets as infinitely adjustable sliders and taking up the gap with the brush. Well thought out.

    I like your two-glue system for rapid prototyping. I've used CA to sort of "clamp" awkward pieces while the wood glue dries, but never used it as if it were temporary while the wood glue was still wet. Quick, cheap experiments make this kind of project a lot easier to tweak and faster to get right.

    This is a very nice solution to the drill press chip mess. To remove the mount completely for running large hole saws or a circle cutting jig could you give the backing piece a magnetic connection and eliminate removing the hose clamps? On the shield in place of opposing magnets and the issue polarity use a series of 10x2 disc magnets on the shield and put a strip of 1/8" thick x 1/2" wide steel on the mating piece in place of the bar magnets. No worries about polarity and should hold just as well for less money.

    • @RingsWorkshop
      @RingsWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the idea of a quick disconnect from a piece mounted to the pole. I tried with just magnets to pole but because it is round it rotated a lot, but having a piece attached with hose clamps that the main base then attaches too is a great idea. As far as the magnets/steel, you 100% could go that route, I just had a bunch of magnets on hand and didn’t have a steel. I also figured a lot of people watching may find it easier to attach a magnet vs messing with cutting steel if they don’t have that tool set (ie only do wood working) so that’s why I went this route.

    Your timing is impeccable; I was just starting to research and plan out a drill press dust collection solution. This looks great - I also wonder about interactions with a drill press table fence. I suspect a modified brush would like be workable.

    • @RingsWorkshop
      @RingsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you!! My normal fence is about 2” tall, I cut about an inch out in the middle and it moves smoothly under it if needed. Debated about just cutting the whole thing down lower as I rarely need the height.

    • @jasonray3937
      @jasonray3937 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense. My current fence is also about 2 inches, but realistically 1 inch is all that’s needed. If some bizarre situation required a taller fence an auxiliary fence could be used.
