I don’t understand How these videos aren’t watched over a million times. This series is easily one of the best I’ve encountered for really thinking about how to put a workshop together. Thank you for taking the time to make these. Over the last few months I’ve watched each one a couple times as I’ve steadily turned my shop from a scrap collection heap to a real fabrication shop.

I figure I should share this. I’ve come back to your channel about 12-15 times in the last 10 months referencing your workshop organization series and speaking of it to friends. I think the most valuable piece is how you explain your sort of troubleshooting piece of what you’ve tried and what you’ve learned. That’s such a massive time saver for me and at a level of detail I can’t begin to say thank you for relaying.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. From your 10x viewer and subscriber. Cheers.

    Step 1: Prioritize Space
    1. Floor Space
    2. Benchtop Space
    -------------
    3. Wall Space
    4. Drawers / Cabinet Space
    5. Ceiling / Air Space
    -------------
    6. Unreachable Wall Space

Step 2: Determine Frequency of Use
    1. All the Time (Daily)
    2. Pretty Often (Weekly)
    3. Sometimes (Monthly)
    4. Rarely (Once a Year or Less)
5 Never (Get Rid of It)
    Top 10 Mistakes I Made
    1. “It’s Always Just Been There”
    2. Didn’t Use French Cleats
    3. Didn’t Plan for Growth
    4. Built Exactly What I Saw Online
    5. Made “Easy to Make” vs “Easy to Use”
    6. Holding Onto Things For Too Long
    7. Didn’t Put Items Close to Where They’ll Be Used
    8. Kept Tools Down That Were Rarely Used
    9. Not Finishing Project Before Starting Another
    10. Putting Off Getting Organized

My having watched seemingly a thousand videos on the subject of shop organization, and being guilty of considering these very challenges quite likely to the point of obsessiveness, I think you've done a first-rate job of identifying and addressing this meaty topic. Consistent organization takes great discipline; it's a mindset. And great organization is a leap beyond, benefiting from applied imagination and an appetite for continuous improvement. You are plainly well equipped to speak on this subject, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the videos in your series.
One point that I've picked up in the past, and that seems to bear repeating is this: in the context of a woodworking shop, organization isn't about aesthetics; it's not even just about functionality and efficiency. Shop organization is a matter of personal safety, as a messy shop can quickly become a more dangerous shop.
Keep it up. And thanks for the videos.

@@dngriffiths8105 thank you for the kind words! I agree, safety isn’t always everyone’s favorite thing to talk about, but it’s the most important. If I can’t find my dust mask or safety glasses quickly, the urge to make “just that one cut” real quick goes up.

I totally agree with you about floor space being #1 in priority, and I think organization (or at least the wishful thinking!) is always an ongoing procedure in everyone's shop. One of the biggest things that helped me in my small shop was putting everything (on the floor) on wheels, so I can move it easily/quickly. This goes for cabinets, benches, machines, etc. It has greatly enhanced the usability of my available floor space, while also giving me the capability and extra space to do some larger projects that I never could have done, otherwise. Having the ability to move your floor layout in an instant, really makes a huge difference. Another thing that really helps, is having all (or most) of your work surfaces at the same table height...that way when you're working on something really long or extra large, it's easy to just pull another nearby table over for support, instead of always having to shim them up to match. Thanks for all the great ideas and tips, I enjoyed your video.

    • @RingsWorkshop
      @RingsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with everything being the same height or very close. I built my miter station just a hair larger than my workbench back in my cubby (I really need to find a better way to describe that thing), so I could cut longer board and it could rest on it if needed.

  • @robertrobinson3597

Drawers, I have a few, but not enough. I could put thing away if I had more, BUT one thing I learned early is that "Drawers are where tools go to die!" It seems to me that even the drawers in my router stand are not enough for my routers & their stuff! Putting tools on the wall with pegboard works great for me, as an occasional wood worker, I can locate & grab a tool readily. With drawers, not so. You did help with the concept of getting rid of old tools that are now never used. If you have some good ideas about how to manage routers it would help me. Another thing, tools are not trophies. I have a hard time finally admitting that certain tools never worked out & get them out of the way, and out of the shop. Also my fathers & Grandpas tools that are so obsolete and difficult to use, having been replaced with more modern methods . This video is very helpful to me. Thanks!

I've moved from a 36' by 16' shop to a 12' by 12' one. Your organization ideas will be useful. My first decision was to build two floor cabinets, remove the legs from my MFT and add a top. The initial hesitation was "I spent so much on the MFT I don't want to throw away the legs." I persevered and have zero regrets. Money spent should not hinder a new, better idea.

Great tips and I like the style. I appreciate the mild humor without trying too hard. It's perfect timing I'm currently using 1,200 sf of floor space and 50 sf of wall space, thats about to change (that was a great way to break it down in your video). Thanks!

Great video, as always. I was just telling my daughter that it’s a shame that you didn’t start doing these all along the way if your journey for as well as you are doing. I get inspired by the ideas you have had and do use the info. That’s a huge thing to me because there are so many videos I watch for ideas but can only use bits and pieces of them because it doesn’t pertain to my specific wants/needs for my shop. Like I said before, you’re the first person I’ve seen that has designed and documented the same ideas I’ve been bouncing around about having a fliptop workbench instead of putting another tool on the other side. That’s huge, also! Thanks again for that one. 👍🏼
I’m going to print out your checklist and put it above my drafting desk in the shop to keep checking off the ❌s and ✅s until I can get mine finished being completely organized. I appreciate the help. 😃
My crimes are: 9, 10, 6, 7, and 8, in order of degree of mistakes. I have tons of wood scraps and I am trying to work on keeping them contained in small areas. I’m going to put a cubby type box on my French cleats to keep them up out of the way. I was given a bunch of curly maple from a recent local bank build and there are various sizes. I have not come up with an idea for them yet but once I do, it should utilize most of them. It’s tough getting rid of the stuff Left over from other projects, that’s for sure! Lol I have recently been saving the scraps and shavings for our family camping trips to starting campfires 🔥 . I think that’s a very useful idea. 👍🏼

As always, thank you for the kind words. I like the idea of hanging up the checklist. Even though when I’m focused that’s the mindset, there are times where I get tunnel vision working on something and need the reminder.

Another nicely done video. I was laughing as you went through where you could put the drill - brilliant.
On the question of mistakes, they definitely ring true. 5, 6, 8 and 9 were especially poignant. My current shop is an exterior Tuff Shed which, after I insulated it, is about 9.5 x 19. Organization is absolutely key to success. I must have reworked the layout in Visio 50 times, and then still changed it all a dozen times more when I finally got things delivered. One thing that caught me several times was not realizing what wall space would end up being obscured by tools or cramped by other things on the wall - there is space between my drill press and miter saw, for example, but it’s hard to use effectively. And things on the wall in a corner require more open space on the adjoining wall than I thought.
    Keep the videos coming!

    • @RingsWorkshop
      @RingsWorkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you!! Very true, I try to keep low profile tools mounted in corners, ie drill press table on one, kreg k5 jig next to it.

First things first, your hair and t-shirt are awesome.
I always wanted to just paint my garage with a sticky paint. Like the stuff used to catch flies. So I can throw my tools at the wall or ceiling and bam, there outta the way and easy to find.
Plus the safety, you know when the hammer slips out of your hand and bounces around? Not anymore, it just sticks to something. Totally rad
Safety first. Goggles, gloves, sticky paint.

On my third, maybe fourth iteration of my “shop” (garage), and finally bit the bullet and ripped the whole thing back down to the studs. These videos have been so, so helpful in thinking differently about the rebuild. The irony here is that I work for Lexus, which implements Toyota 5S at its core. So much overlap with what you’ve covered in this video 😆 Keep at it!!

@RingsWorkshop here is something that popped in my head when I saw your tablesaw...in another video you mentioned having to move things for the cars...
Build a cabinet around your tablesaw and through some locking casters underneath

    • @RingsWorkshop
      @RingsWorkshop  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

My new table saw is fully mobile still, planned on making a massive cabinet for it but with how heavy it is I just got the mobile platform for it and built two cabinets under it.
