2 Stroke, 900W Generator, No Spark, No Run, No Power Repair!

  • Bought this $5 generator a couple of weekends ago. It is a simple 2 stroke, 950Watt generator, 120VAC and 12VDC. Once running, it can be a helpful tool to add to any collection! In this video, we will repair the spark, clean water and debris from the gas tank and carburetor, troubleshoot and clean a clogged exhaust. Once it was able to achieve its full RPMs, it started generating power. We verified the power output with a 100W filament lamp and adjusted the governor to rated output.

In the UK we clean out 2 stroke exhaust by putting the exhaust on a fire so they get hot and burns the oil out of them. Cheers from old George

Before I do any work , I do a test which I call Prime for a Good time . Spray carb cleaner into the cab , with no choke . Try to start the engine if it runs on the prime then you know , ignition is good , compression is good , mechanical timing is good , ignition timing is good . This saves time and tells you the most information in the lest amount of time .

Hey Chris, I did that also and got nothing.... I think the loose sparkplug clip took out the spark.... I figured that it had compression and looked complete, so, I could always use it for parts on another one that I already own.... Thanks for the good suggestion, advice, thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!

$5 ain't bad for a nice little easily-resurrected genset. I have a couple of the nearly identical old red StormCat Harbor Freight model, predecessor to their later green TailGator ones, and they're just the ticket for running a power tool off-grid. In a pinch they'll also keep things from getting too "medieval" during a power outage. They won't run the whole house of course, but run a decent extension cord from outside through a window, and you'll have a few lights, maybe run a fan or space heater on medium, and every couple of hours it'll put its shoulder into keeping a fridge (and just the fridge) from completely thawing out. If you cannot afford a bigger genset, every homeowner should at least have one if these little cheapo 2-stroke fussbuckets for emergencies. The trick on keeping 'em happy for years and years is to try to run ethanol-free fuel with 2-stroke oil (about 50:1 is fine). The stuff with ethanol turns quickly to snot and will give the carb a case of "The Clogs". An added dash of Marvel Mystery Oil to the fuel (maybe an ounce per tank full) also ain't a bad idea, and when shutting it down just turn off the fuel and let it run the carb dry. That really helps. I do the same with other small engines like mowers and such, and there's never any drama come Spring.

i have a few of those in the hoard as well , 3 of them work very well , i keep them for running the sump pumps in spring , we always manage to get power outages in spring when the water table is at it's highest . i think i have around 20 bucks invested in all 3 of them , good little units 👍

Hey Michel, They are the best light weight, easy to work on, long lasting, cheapest, disposable generators that can really save one's butt in a difficult situation.... Seems that I know that well!!!! Thanks for the info, knowledge, thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!

Hey James!!! I remembered from a friend's 2 stroke atv that a clogged exhaust will choke out an engine... Thanks for Ur thoughts, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!

The gen side crank seal popped out on one of mine, it's a 20x30x7 oil seal. That makes for a huge crankcase air-leak, so it wouldn't start (of course) This was an earlier model, I don't think it was the correct material for gasoline/oil. I haven't had any problem (yet) with the crank seal under the flywheel but I think it's the same size.
When adjusting the engine governor speed, I use a frequency meter shooting for 60Hz at about half load, using a 500Watt incandescent shop lamp.

Great price! I have one that saved my freezer and fridge food on several occasions. Of course, it would only run one at a time but that was fine. It is quiet for a generator and that is important as well. Mine finally quite but after years of service. One more thing to note about them is there is a capacitor that makes the generator part "come to life" and produce power. If you get one that runs but makes no power replace that cap and it will go back to making power again. I need to dig mine out and make it ru again. 👍👍

Hey Fan!!! Really good info on Ur experience with the little generator and about replacing the capacitor when the power goes dead!!!! I need to check eBay to see if they sell the cap, maybe a good thing to keep as a spare!!! Thanks for the good info, Ur thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!!

Two years later.......... the power here failed yesterday. I got the little 2 stroke out and started. Old fuel but it ran. It was running rich so I'll see if I can adjust it and then back in the box till the power fails again. Might be tomorrow, 6 months, a year but it will happen. A shot of carb cleaner in the carb throat helps get them get easily started when they've set for a long time, goes for all small engines. I've got a couple of other generators but the little 2 cycle is easiest to hook up for temp outages. Good enough to run a TV with over the air antenna, a couple of lights and a fan.

I carry one of those in the back of my truck along with a small air compressor and 1/4 drive air tools just in case ! I run it 2 or 3 times a month ! I think like you said I paid $85 at HF ! Mine generally runs 6 to 8 hours on a full tank ! I was thinking about connecting 2 together but now I have a propane 3500 watt generator so it makes no sense ! Lol. Like you im generator poor with 1- 7 k and 2- 3500 and 1- 2200 and 1- 900 ! Lol

Hey Dave!!! In my opinion, there is no such thing as too many generators!! Good idea keeping one in Ur truck and starting it regularly, when needed, it is a bad time to discover that the carb needs a cleaning to run!!!! Thanks for Ur thoughts, info, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!!

Even a "burning man" reference, nice job Harvey. A couple of tricks new to me along with a review of things I don't spend time going over. Had a good one today, apparently when somebody filled a can with gas, there was a little diesel in the bottom and caused a running issue. It also came in with a clutch problem that turned out to be a bolt on the primary only finger tight! Who let the inmates run the asylum?

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey Steve, Glad U enjoyed the Burning Man reference, I'm surprised no one else picked up on it!!!! I hate to admit this, I had a bad jug of gas take out 2 snow blowers when I needed them and one atv after the next until it was empty.... May have been the some diesel mixed in, though, it smelled like gas! Worse yet is gas into a heater, back to burning man... Or, a blown up diesel engine... About loose bolts, I left a ignition advancer bolt loose on an atc200s, engine started right up, stalled, would not restart.... Took me 2 days to figure it out.... Double checking one's self is always a good idea, but, having said that, stupid is a tough fix and I try not to be stupid! Thanks always for Ur thoughts, info, understanding, watching, and commenting!!!

@@HarveySpooner We get plenty of machines that have either water, diesel, or other substances we can only speculate on. Sometimes a crankcase is so full the motor doesn't run right, but no gas smell is mixed in with it? Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of a do it yourselfer?

Hey Martin, Honda makes great stuff and the little generators are even better than that! I asked a street vendor in NYC how long his little honda generators last, his response was that some last for years, other get stolen immediately.... He never had a fail... Having said that, if one needs a disposable generator and can score one of these cheap, they do generate power and are fairly easy to fix... A good cheap learning experience for someone who is looking for a project.... I agree that honda makes great stuff and compared to them, these are junk.... Having said that, for $5 or for less than $100 new, they are not a bad tool to keep in one's collection.... Thanks for Ur thoughts, watching, and commenting, PS - I can never find a $5 honda generator, dead ones cost hundreds around me!
