  • How to make a homemade derailleur hanger alignment tool to fix your mountain bike's shifting!
The alignment tool for a bent derailleur hanger can be a bit pricey considering you don't use the tool very often.
In this video, I show you how to save some money by making a homemade tool with some parts from the hardware store and some basic tools in the garage.
It is important to make sure that the derailleur is aligned for proper shifting. If the hanger is bent then the derailleur's cage will not line up with the chain/cassette.
This homemade tool is used to gauge the distance from the rim so be able to bend back the derailleur hanger to the proper alignment.

It was a quick and easy tool to make. It worked well and I was able to get my bike back in action.

Use 10mm x 1.0 jam nuts, not regular sized nuts. The height of a jam nut is shorter than a regular nut. Using 2 regular nuts will not allow enough of the bolt length to thread into the hangar as far as it should. A spacer or two may be necessary when using jam nuts. Thanks for saving me some cash! It was fun and rewarding to make and use this. Gonna last forever.

If you use a combination square to mark the location of the hole you drilled on each side of the tube and you drill a pilot hole from each side, you can guarantee that you very close to a 90 degree hole. You can also use that same combination square as your measuring device for straightness as it is much more accurate than a simple rule. You could also use a nylon locking nut and you would not have to use the multiple nuts. Maybe you need 2 nuts for the offset so that clears the bike parts.
