My wife says you’re a wizard. Your videos are amazing! I’ve just waxed my chain for the first time after watching how you do it. I’m still waiting for the PTFE to arrive so it’s straight paraffin wax right now. I figure by the time it shows up, all I’ll need to do is pour some boiling water over the chain and do the re-wax properly. I also cut my carbon steerer using your instructions. You’re attention to detail and clear instructions are the best on TH-cam. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your expertise and videos. Cheers from Virginia!

The real message here is, ‘don’t through away anything’ some of that trash will save you $$$. We spend so much on products that with a few items that would otherwise end up in landfill, a little spent on choice parts, ingenuity and spare time, more expensive items can be constructed at home for a fraction of the retail price. Steven, you'r a diamond. The derailleur tool was well put together, as was this video.

Awesome vid! Using certain "garden parts" or parts from an "old radio" doesn't detract at all from this DIY, it really just pushes viewers to be creative/innovative in their own DIY endeavors. Once again, great vid!

Finally, I've finished it! I didn't find a drill press to use so did it
by hand. I used box section like Oz and found steel tube to slide over
it. Each of these can be drilled at either end so I drilled the worst of
the ends. If I do find a drill press, I'll re-drill at the other end of
the tubing for better accuracy. I used thin green garden cane for the
depth measuring plus a grommet to mark the depth. The even better news
is that it works! My son fell off in a bicycle race today (he's fine)
and needs the bike again soon. Hence the emergency had drilling. The
derraileur hanger was bent from the crash and wouldn't change gear
exactly. I fixed it with the tool. Also, he often complains about his
school bike skipping gears. I can get it working OK but its very
sensitive and a week later, it's skipping again. I used the tool on this
bike and found/corrected the bent derailleur. This one is now changing
    perfectly too! Thanks Oz!

Love your work! Just built up a new bike, and gears weren't quite right. I suspected hanger was out by a smidge, but not quite prepared to plonk down $100 or more on a hanger tool! I had used an old bmx wheel in the past, but couldn't find it in the shed! Anyway, was at Bunnings, and picked up a length of 25mm sq alu. As it turned out, I actually had a new axle sitting around. Chucked a 9.5mm drill bit in the drill press, installed the axle, just using the cones, spacers etc, to assemble. Used my old plastic vernier calipers, as a ruler, and checked my hanger. Indeed, it was out! Adjusted, rechecked, and adjusted RD tuning, and now shifts like a beauty! Might make some changes to the 'tool' down the track, but for now, did the job admirably! And only for a few $$'s! Thanks again! Cheers!

Hi. This tool certainly made an impression on me. It works very well! I realized how my rear hanger of derailleur is important to good changing of "gear". Especially tool is very usefull because your eye sometimes is not able to look twist of hanger. After fix my hanger derailleur works very precisely, even on the 8 speed version.

Thanks OZ Cycle for your clever creations. Sometimes its not even about affording an overpriced tool but more a case of spending money on tool I only need once in a long while. I made the DIY bearing press following your other video, worked perfectly and cost a few dollars vs umpteen for the Park. Going to give this a go. My old drill press broke, so saving money on a hanger alignment tool justifies buying a new drill when "The Mrs." asks what I spent...right?

  • @michaelgreene9791

Great idea but WAY more intricate than need be. All you really need to build this is the square pipe, just cut it longer to reach the rim for older 27" wheels, the QR rear axle with only #2 locknuts that are included and enough washers to clear the seat/chainstays and a RULER as your guide pin. Oh and a hacksaw, files and drill and bits too to make it. If you have a travel bike all you'll need is a spare rear axle and #2 locknuts and a ruler and you can find a way to built this wherever you travel to, by visiting a local hardware store and a car mechanic can drill the holes and cut the pipe for you in 5 minutes. The idea is KISAP, Keep it Simple as Possible. BTW a tru 2nd rear wheel with a QR axle thats threaded into the dropout can serve as a derailer alignment tool by referencing the rim of the spare wheel to the same spoke of bike wheel at 12,3,6 and 9 o'clock positions.

The off the shelf 10mm x 1.0mm bolt won’t work on all bikes. On my Bianchi (Italian) the 10mm bolt has a different number of threads per inch. It takes a 10mm x 26tpi bolt. The standard 10mm x 1.0mm will start in the hole, but would not go in by hand. It would reform the threads if you continued with a tool. I have also read that the thread angle is 55 degrees, not a standard 60, but can’t confirm that.
I used my derailleur hanger bolt as the pivot point.

I don't think the angle matters. It is important to be tightened so it won't have too much play, but the angle shouldn't matter.

  • @documetricsinc.6135
    @documetricsinc.6135 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Very clever, DIY solution. Not to criticize, but it is crucial that the first hole, in the square tube, must be precisely perpendicular to the tube, otherwise any deviation, however small, will be transferred to every DH you use it on. Drill press should be mandatory for that drilling. Some people couldn't drill a perfectly perpendicular hole by hand if their life depended on it. Also, if you don't have a spare axle handy, you could simply use a M10-1.0x50 bolt, washers and hex locknuts from the hardware store.

    • @mutos82
      @mutos82 5 ปีที่แล้ว

No, it is not very necessary to use drill press and have very, very perpendicular hole because edge of square are paraller. Edges of square + washers determine precision of tool.

But, why not to take one piece of steel square tube length of about 40cm
Instead of QR axle you can use M10 bolt with few small and few larger washers and nuts. Nut head you can easily tighten by hand, so no need for making handle.

This looks good! I'm underway with building one in the UK. I understand that your idea is to use what you have available. However, I don't have what you are using. Please post links to the barbed hose tail fitting plus cap. I think thats what they are called but I am having trouble locating them in UK. The thing you hammered the M10 x 1mm nut into plus the cap you screwed on. I don't mind Aussie links as it will help me to find UK equivalents. When I have built mine, I'll post UK links to what I bought to make it which will help UK cyclists build one.
I've already got the box section steel and axle stuff. The irrigation pipe for the distance from box section to rim is proving difficult but I'm going to use plasic rod instead.
Many thanks! Your video has inspired me to try this and I think I can make one in the UK.

On the other hand, its only a knob to screw the axle into the hanger so I can probably improvize with something else more readily available here.

I explained what I was trying to build and he gave me the tube and wouldn't take any money. Next challenge is the 25mm poly tube. DD, sorry its taking a while but I've come to a temporary halt. Some of OZ's designs use irrigation tubing etc. Hard to find in the UK as there is little call for it because due to our inclement weather, the UK is in a more or less permanent state of irrigation :-). Anyway, I've got everything I need but I've had to find UK alternatives. I think that's in the spirit of OZ's ideas anyway as he always encourages us to use what we have available. I'm just trying to find someone with a drill press to drill the 10mm holes in the box section steel. Oz did this by hand but I don't trust myself so would rather find/borrow the proper tool to make sure the holes are exactly perpendicular to the box section. Instead of the poly tube, I found a low cost section of 28mm outer diameter x 1.5mm wall thickness mild steel tube on ebay. That fits snugly over the box section inner tube. Will update later....

+Brian Foley Cyclus and Icetools make a hanger tool for less than $50. Id make you one but 1/ If I make 1 everybody will want one. 2/ If you make it yourself its your personal achievement too.

One thing though... you know that the axle holes need to be perfectly one facing each other? In other words, the thread that goes into the hanger needs to be at a PERFECT right angle to the tool itself. The micro difference may result in a 1, 2, or 3mm error on the end of the tool, and while you're going to be thinking you've straightened the hanger, it's going to be slightly bent. So making those holes, while having a drill in your hand... not the most precise way to drill a hole. Also, the slack presented later on... in unacceptable

Another thing is that there's the reason why Park Tool places "axle/hanger mounting" not through the square tubing sides, but it's placed going through the "corners". That way the tool is impossible to bend while trying to fix the hanger, cause you are pushing/pulling towards not square tubing's walls, but towards its corners, which is the best spot to make sure the pressure put on the tool, will actually never bend it

@oz_cycle do you sell the rear derailleur tool>? I want one but do not have the Tools to create it even if I buy the nuts, rods etc.

And if you have an old radio lying around from which to get that particular part and if you have eight or ten hours of your time to look around for all the "garden" parts that have been specified, you'll probably, after putting some value on your own time, be able to build this questionably accurate tool for just a bit more than you'd spend either going to your LBS for some help or just buying the Park tool. I laughed a lot because I've been there. I built a homemade table saw years ago and it sort of worked, but then Rockwell showed me the truth about table saws and the error of my ways.

+Fenton Stratton Quite true Fenton with the DIYs but I endevour to make it as easy as possible for people in any country. If you havnt got the materials at home you should be able to source them at any local hardware store.....cheap. Agree,if one has no time....fair enough...but people always find time for the things they want to do.If you build the tool as specified in the video it will be as accurate as any marketed.

I'm with Mark on this one. I started to make my own and then realized for the price of a new one (not Park Tool but CycloSport which was $50) I couldn't argue because a few hours of my time and the good chance that it isn't that precise makes it worth it. I do lots of DIY stuff but precision instruments aren't the greatest idea.

Oh, please. The odds of being able to find all the parts to build this contraption, whose accuracy may be marginal at best, are very remote. Is there an Australian version of Home Depot with a "Bizzaro Hardware" department? GMAB! If this guy really wanted to be helpful, he would tell us EXACTLY where you might find the really odd parts used for this gizmo. Otherwise, I just call BS on this. Based on his idea of "quick and easy" he must have endless time on his hands.

HAD2MAN All of the parts used in this video that are critical to the performance of the tool I could pick up in an hour between Lowe's and my local bike shop. There are no hard to find parts used. Some of the parts were just for aesthetics and not needed for the performance of the tool. If a person has the technical skills to change the oil in their car then they'd be able to find the parts easily and make this tool at home, that probably leaves you out. If you have more money than sense or creativity you should just buy the Park tool.

HAD2MAN You could probably skip the trip to the bike shop and use a bolt instead of the axle if you measure the threads before you go to Lowe's. Yes, you can get everything you need in one trip to any home improvement store if you possess the smallest amount of mechanical inclination.
