A short video explaining how we have used the Nest Hello to operate a relay to switch an old battery operated door bell, this relay setup can be used to switch door bells that may use not use 24v
This diagram is what should be in the manual! With your diagram it took me 5 seconds to know how to connect my doorbell. With the nest manual I would've still been looking or experimenting. Thank you very much!!
finally someone posted a video with a diagram rather than |"for dummies" - now works perfectly as i didnt understand what is the function of this dongle
Great video. Clears up a lot of questions I had with the best wiring. I couldn’t get the existing chime working, so just wired 24volts to the doorbell and rely on my phone to tell me if someone is at the door.
I like the Nest product but as I installed my nest hello doorbell I’m thinking. For the love of god nest stop treating me like and idiot and just give me a damn diagram. Thank you for filling this unmet need.
So glad you posted this, this sorted out my dilemma of having to replace my existing chime which I liked and didn't want to disturb. For those who are hunting down the parts, I sourced from uk.rs-online.com/. And all under a tenner and free delivery too (at the time of posting). Relay: RS Stock No. 805-2153 Socket: RS Stock No. 123-2057 The Nest chime connection go on terminals A1 & A2 to activate the coil. I then used terminal 11 (com) and terminal 14 (NO - Normally Open) to simulate the old bell push button loop. Do test before you install as I don't want to be liable for your install, but this worked for me.
Very useful thanks. Pretty much what I had drawn out in circuit form except with a Honeywell wired to wireless converter to use the Honeywell series 9 bell system. Good to know it works :)
I've just put this together using gt8monsters wiring and the Honeywell wireless converter with a Series 9 MP3 Doorbell. Works a treat :) Just remember to use A1 and A2 on the converter when using the relay. My first attempt was without the relay using A1 and AC1 and it just drained the converters Button Battery. That, and it chimed the Doorbell at random times (2:45AM being the worst!!)
Great video. Thanks !! But still one question: Why do you need to connect NEST and the CHIME CONNECTOR in SERIE (circle) from the transformator point of view? Why not connecting both the BEST and the CHIME CONNECTOR directly on to the power transformer ?
Really useful video. Am I right in assuming though that if I am using a transformer (BRITISH GENERAL 8-24V 8VA BELL TRANSFORMER MODULE from Screwfix) that I wouldn't need to use a relay, I can connect the chime connector directly to my Byron 720k chime?
This video is everything i wanted. Don’t know why nest couldn’t have included this in the documentation. As an installer, i dont want to pair all these doorbells to my phone. Just give us the diagram Nest so i can move along with my day.
Crag Mack ok go you tube search nest doorbell UK watch jay Hussain video tells you all stuff you need from amazon Then using this video wire in a 24v relay which you get fro RS component finder across A1A2 on Honeywell chime
I just bought 8 Pin 10A 24VAC Coil Electromagnetic Relay with Socket Base DPDT with LED and Mechanical Indicator LY2N-J.....how do we wire the relay? Which wire goes on which pin?
Can you share the specifications of the relay? I'm trying to hook the chime onto my domotics system (Teletask), but can't connect it directly to the digital inputs (Teletask TDS12117). I guess I simply have to add a relay like in your setup to get it to work.
If you go to local electrical wholesaler and ask for 24v ac SPST - single pole single throw. At least. They will be able to help out. Also look it up at RS components website
Looking for some help here and came across your post.. live in the US have a 16v:10va 2 connector transformer connected to a regular push doorbell. And regular door chime. The elec originally installed it like this. Red from Transformed connects to the one port on door chime then the other port on the door chime connects to the push doorbell. The green from the transformer connects to the doorbell directly making the ring loop..standard I know....I would like to change the transformer for a 3 way trans, with 3 connectors 8v, 16v,24v, I want to feed the chime with 16v and the nest hello doorbell with the 24v side.. this way when the Nest hello is pressed or sees motion it works by the 24v feed but the transformer feeds to door chime with the 16v side....can this be done and it so how do I wire it... Would really appreciate learning from your expertise.
Thanks for the post. I was discussing with my electrician and this really helped. Question where did you get the transformed and the relay? I might do exactly what you have.
gt8monster thanks again. My parts arrived and i wired it up just like you said and it works a treat. I happen to have a musical door chime which plays a tune but it works just like you had it setup. I was not able to find the components on RS components but i got them from eBay in the end. 24v AC 1Amp Transformer and 24V AC relay Omron. Googled the wiring diagram online and copied your layout.
Hi @gt8monster Thanks for the video. It’s useful to see. A couple of questions: What’s the voltage of the Chime? Does your chime only take batteries? The 24V plug transformer is that something that can be picked up pretty easily from the high street or local electrical shops or will I need to order off eBay or similar?! Thanks Warren :)
Warren Buckley Hi Warren, the voltage of the chime is irrelevant as the relay isolates the two circuits. We used a battery powered chime as an example, the relay can be used to switch any doorbell, just remember if you have a 24v AC transformer you must have a 24v AC relay coil. We used a 24v AC transformer from RS Components, we bought the relay and base from there also. Hope this solves any confusion.
Hi @gt8monster, thank you for your video, it's very helpful, I would highly appreciate if you could point me to the 24v AC relay coil and base, the website has so many of them and when I called the support they asked what is the amp for the relay... Many thanks.
Hi I have a multi volt transformer giving me 8v 10v and 24v can I use this power my existing 8v door bell and if so how would I wire it, would I still need the 24v relay ? any ideas ?
Hi @gt8monster - Great video and very useful. Can I use the same setup and wire it into a chime with built in 16v transformer plugged into a 3 pin plug? Thanks
Thanks sorry I was meant to the bell had a built in 8v transformer which is why thought this would be the best option for me. Will give it a try, thanks once again.
Hello. Great setup. Where did you purchase the relay? Do you have a part number for the relay? I called RS components and they don’t have any rely in stock that can take 24vac switching with such a low current at .33Amps Please help

8707P is 8VA transformer from screwfix. Be careful tho cause quality is quite poor and I found internal connections are very badly made and transformer may appear faulty.
has anyone connected them up to a existing chime? my query is if you upgrade the transformer to 24v , then what happens if the existing chime is rated at something less, i have called nest technical and they not helpful tbh, i had to install my first one for them last week , which was basically swapping a ring pro which doesn't have a wired chime, they couldn't tell me how to connect the chime connector, in the end i just worked it out myself and left the two cables with the hooked ends from the chime connector in connectors, only thing is the custom doesn't have a chime indoors but relies on notifications from his phone , ipad, etc, actually nest support recommend not to connect it that way for some reason
Really helpful to see the diagram. Thank you. I bought a 24v transformer and a 24V bell from Germany so didn’t need the relay but miss the familiar ding dong. I’ll be looking for nicer 24V chimes. I used these from Amazon amzn.eu/8kdBVyl amzn.eu/8zEAYJz The chime is small - I had to paint the wallwhere I had been too lazy before to paint behind the old chime.
Thanks for the video. I don’t have any wiring for a doorbell currently, so need to make a fresh install. I have found this transformer at screwfix: www.screwfix.com/p/british-general-8-24v-8-va-bell-transformer-module/8707p Which seems to suggest it’s suitable. However, I don’t want a chime as I have google home, so essentially just want the nest hello powered. Based on your diagram, does that mean the rely and chime isn’t required? All I know about electricity is it apparently hurts if you stick your fingers in a plug, so if I’m asking a stupid question forgive me!
Hi really helpful video, I will be using your setup as it's really uncomplicated the issue. Just a one question, I do not have a door bell at the moment so have to buy one, which one would you recommend for this setup? I found the relay, hopefully its the same one used in the video: uk.rs-online.com/web/p/non-latching-relays/8052153/ uk.rs-online.com/web/p/relay-sockets/1232060/
this option may have answered my question, just use the Byron 776 word door bell. As you can see from the manual the batteries become redundant as its powered by a 3 pin plug into the mains. Thanks. Your diagram helped me wire mine up.
Great video. Clears up a lot of questions I had with the best wiring. I couldn’t get the existing chime working, so just wired 24volts to the doorbell and rely on my phone to tell me if someone is at the door.
Thanks a lot mine was not working and show this this to the installer and it worked out. Appreciate your support !
Thanks a lot for this video. So clear and precise. Imagine if Nest managed to do somehing like this instead of their useless info...

Very useful vide. This solution is so easy no wonder why nest don't post it on their help site. Plus they want to keep nest installers in job.

Batteries in chime are the reason why you need to use volt free contact In relay.
