Since we published this review, Nest has launched a new $5 per month subscription camera that makes the system slightly more competitive. Details here: th-cam.com/video/9L47o6yF05Q/w-d-xo.html
*We purchased this after moving, and previously had a spotlight **Newest.Technology** cam with solar power. The wired pro cam has much better light (about the same as a bright porch light), and the image is significantly more clear with much better details.*
Great review with great advice, can't fault it. Nest have recently released a new subscription for $5 per month ($50 annual) for 5 days storage which makes it more competitive!
Yes! We did a short video on that yesterday. That makes the Nest cameras a bit more attractive. They're still not the cheapest out there, both in terms of initial hardware cost and monthly running cost, but the new $5 option makes them more competitive. There's also a 50% discount for subsequent cameras.
Hey, just wanted to say that was by far the best (and most informative) review of the product I've seen this far. No one else has provided the monthly upload amount (minimum or maximum) so that was a real eye opener! Thanks again for the best review of this product. Much appreciated. 👍
Dear Nest, You have a great product. Home security is a necessity these days. Thers are a few issues. 1. The subscription is expensive. 2. The connection wire is kept outside or drill a huge hole. 3. There is not an option for storage. 4. Paying to keep personal vids in Google cloud vs. Personal storage is a huge let down. Please take this into consideration if you want to remain competitive.
Cleon Brady. Cloud is competitive. No one wants clutter in their house. Second their app is amazing. Everything is subscription based. Get use to it or complain forever. It’s how everyone is going. Might as well go with google which has a ridiculous amazing app and can support multi other products. Yes the connection is wired. It’s clean. Who wants junk setup. Hire someone or learn how to wire route. Imagine walking by a house that has all these wires running along the walls and now imagine a setup with clean no wires and just a beautiful camera... take your pick
An absolute must is to have a security light close to the camera so it records in colour at night, i have my nest hello turn on my security lights when it detects a person using stringify to my sonoff switches, so my swann wired system records in colour. i spent a while with testing and positioning of lights and cameras but its well worth the extra effort to record in colour.
Thanks for the tip. The motion lights near my camera are regular old-fashioned security lights but they will come on with movement at the porch. We'll shortly have a video review of the Arlo security lights, which can not only be triggered by the camera but have their own motion sensors and can trigger cameras.
Hi, I bought a nest outdoor iq yesterday and its so slow, anywhere from 2 seconds to 30 seconds for stringify to turn on my sonoff switch, i currently have an arlo/arlo pro/nest outdoor iq all sat next to each other all turning separate switches to find the fastest and i never get the same result, i may have to try a z wave outdoor pir. cheers
Thanks! Over the last few weeks, I've been monitoring the usage more closely and it hasn't used 400GB in a month. (The app says it will 'try not to go over'). I reckon it's probably using closer to 200GB per month, but that's probably dependent on the scene and how much changes. Mine doesn't change much so the compression can probably be a bit more aggressive. Anyway, it's still something to keep in mind, especially with several cameras.
@@TechHiveVideo The logical question I have is: Can you turn OFF constant video recording? I would only want clips of motion sent to the cloud and nothing else (except when I log in for live view). It would be pretty egregious if you couldn't turn continuous uploading off.
Honestly this system costs a fortune to buy and to run, especially and I’m amazed that this reviewer hasn’t stressed it more robustly. Personally, I couldn’t care less what the mounting plate is like compared to the old one etc. The fact is, these cameras will usually exceed or seriously eat up anyone’s monthly data allowance from their ISP. If you do a search on the net, you’ll find loads of people seriously fed up with these..... often requiring changing ISP or updating and paying more to get a bigger allowance. One person with two cameras was using 400GB a month out of a monthly limit of 500gb. He reckoned it’s the same data usage as watching 59 movies on Netflix. The Nest doorbell is just as bad, using loads of monthly allowance. In addition to most probably having to pay more for WiFi, there’s the initial high purchase cost and then the monthly subscription PER CAMERA.....heavens above, imagine having three of them eating up data allowance and costing between £40 and £240 year PER CAMERA..... over 5 years, it would be cheaper to be burgled. I’ll give this one a miss. Looks like a massive headache to me. None of this mentioned in the review and who knows why a British reviewer feels the need to talk US dollars.......
Depends on your home. If people are able to sneak into your backyard and access your house from there then you should secure that equally much as the front. If thieves see that big mofo camera on the front of your house they’ll try the back of your house right away.
Nest makes a good looking camera, but I can't imagine anyone in their right mind would pay $100/year for cloud storage. The fact is there are so many cameras out there that provide free weekly cloud storage. My personal favorite is the Armorax camera; live streaming, free cloud storage, on-board SD card storage and no fee to use the app..it's literally everything a Nest is for a lot less money.
Brian, The $100 also gets you remote access to your cameras from a smartphone or computer, detection zones and smartphone alerts, so it's more than just cloud storage. Nest's key selling point is that it is continuously recording, so even if the camera fails to catch something as an alert you have video of it. I've looked for Armorax online but can only find a traditional monitored security system, so I can't compare them.
I love having the nest cameras, I don't care about the price.... after someone set my garage on fire and destroyed my brand new Camaro ill pay anything for security I can trust
Revenge of the Apocalypse i guess if you have a Camaro, the total cost of this Nest cam is not an issue for you. For the rest of us who drive Civics, it’s a different story.
Yes! You mentioned the upload speed! One thing people also don’t take into account (upon initial installation!) is that firewalls more often than not prevent cameras from connecting to WiFi! Just thought I’d let you all know :) great review!
With Super Sight, is the video recorded that way? Or is it just zooming in as you view the video? What happens if there's two people in the shot? Does it choose one? Or does it know to show both?
@@hakimvlogs6579 I ended up buying the camera. To answer the question, it’s not recorded that way. Not sure what happens with two people. But it’s not perfect. Sometimes it will follow someone, sometimes it won’t. I actually keep it off. It’s annoying most of the time.
5:20 "Most home connections have a data cap" I guess this video is more tailored for the US market, then? A lot of the world doesn't have data caps. And generally not here in the UK either.
I realize this is an older video, I'd love to see Google allow local NVR storage and offer a PoE camera. What most fail to realize is the value isn't necessarily in the cloud storage, but in the cloud AI API to analyze and filter out false alarms and detection and to add (good or bad) facial recognition. Most cameras are 99% useless in that false alarms make them that way. You can also argue cloud API reliability and privacy vs local detection filtering e.g. Synology NVR Deep Learning (NVR DVA3219). Anyway nice video.
Thanks for the nice review. Just waited for that. I got the normal outdoor with subscription, but gonna change that for this new IQ soon, as soon as it is for sale here.

Excellent review. My primary interest is home security for protection against (1) car prowls (just this past week, sometime during the night, when I was asleep), and (2) when no one is home during the day. Also, my home network is very unreliable, and very short range, so while this Nest camera is attractive, it's just not for me. Thanks for the education.
The advantage of Nest is that it would record everything, so however close someone comes to your driveway, you'll have the video if needed. But to be effective you'd have to pair it with a motion-detecting security light. If you have an unreliable network connection, consider the Netatmo Presence. That records video to a local SD card and you stream from the unit itself. It uses a tiny amount of bandwidth. It also has a built-in light. www.techhive.com/article/3137570/security-cameras/netatmo-presence-review-this-outdoor-home-security-camera-floodlight-justifies-its-high-price-tag.html
Nice review , very clear and concise. My son is learning to kite surf and he is always calling from school asking me if I am in the house and if I can see other kite surfers , or strong winds. What camera do you recommend so he can log from his phone and check the conditions, we live in-front of the beach so I can set it up at home pointing to the kite surfing spot. Thank you
Great review thank you. You covered the hidden costs which for me, like many, have helped me make the decision to not buy one. Nest stuff is very expensive but this is too far. I've got 4 swann cameras and 2tb hard drive, had them for years. They do the job, not brilliant but cost £350 and no further costs
Here in Belgium most providers seem to have a data cap as well. I got lucky to find one without cap. But upstream is only 12Mbps.. countryside area. Up to half a year ago i lived in a city in Netherlands, there they had 100Mbps up and down over glassfiber. That 12Mbps after i moved was quite a shock.
Are you looking to shoot through a window/glass and at night? Then no good cameras I found work well. If it has night vision its IR illumination LEDs will reflect off the glass making it basically white. If it doesn't I still get glare from inside the home. Really only works well in sunlight shooting from inside to outside.
Very good review. I find it amazing however that they have no way to set the cameras up so that they only record video when they sense motion and force you to use the 24/7 recording? I would think many people may have more enclosed areas where they don't need constant recording where motion-sensing would be just fine and use a lot less data. That seems like an amazingly dumb error on their part to not offer that option in their app. Especially considering the price.
Yes, the Nest constantly streams to the cloud so that you always have footage available for review. It's a unique feature of the Nest products. If you don't want that, there are other cameras such as those from Ring, Arlo, Netatmo and others that only send video footage when they spot something. Have a look here: www.techhive.com/article/2998898/security-cameras/best-home-security-camera.html
I'm a Nest Pro and have been troubleshooting many camera product failures. For the price of the camera, one shouldn't have to purchase a new one after 2 years.
Quick Question. Can you set it up so when your home during the day it stops recording in order to save data? Then starts automatically on an evening or when you leave the house? Similar to the thermostat
Nest tell us the camera works at - 40 Celsius . Not sure , after 30 minutes Outside at -21 C there is no more connection. The signal is full ,the router is very close , I ve reset everything-nothing . I brought in the house , wormed up and reinstalled- works again for 30 minutes .
4K is four times more greater in pixel resolution (not resolution dimension) than standard 1080p. When 4K was introduced, they need savvy (maybe convoluting) marketing terms to help bolster sales.
Tech hive, I’m particularly interested in seeing license plates on street vehicles from that range. Are you able to read most plates when it is properly set? Interested to read your experience!
Good news. They are changing their plan cost substantially. You can pay a one set fee for the whole home. No matter the number of cameras. Might not offer the 30 days. Should be out by end of this month 5/2020. Fee is 200 or something like that. I have three locations. So it is about 1600 a year. More than happy to pay around 600. But many of my cameras on 30 days. Just migrating from nest to google so two months ago on a support call they had an ETA of April. But that was before the Virus. So sure will be delayed. That is a great deal.
I have a question regarding the subscription . 5/10/30 Days . I don't understand that So if I get the 10 days does that mean it only scars recordings from the first of the month till the tenth day ? And the rest of the 20/21 days of the month won't be saved ?
The whole 10 days will be recorded and watchable. With markers in the app on a timeline where it noticed something. Any video beyond the 10 days is lost.
Good info , but what other security cameras would you recommend ? Maybe Backstreet security camera or lorex security camera , and maybe one with a dvr ?
You could have a DVR one but they are the first thing theives look for to take. So paying £40 a year to back up all my video footage is worth the price. I had swan and they are shit. in the end they went all green. I could not tell a person from stock. I had my cctv man out and he said get a propper kit. don't even waste money replacing these cameras.
No. The Nest Cam works without a subscription but you are limited to live video only and snapshots (not video) from the last three hours, so it's really only useful with a subscription.
If you want continuous video recording, Nest is the way to go. If you want a security camera system that records on-demand or when it senses something, consider Netgear's Arlo Pro 2. You get 5-days of storage free, so there is no monthly running costs: Full review: www.techhive.com/article/3237505/security-cameras/netgear-arlo-pro-2-review.html
Great vedio !I have outlets in my soffits so would have coverage for any camera from the weather which would u recommend the arlo pro 2 nest or nest iq ? Cause I like the nest just not the subscribe thingy thx keep up the good work...

Exactly, Nest and Google are good, but the the best, I'd search for a commercial cam , I need 3 cameras to install front and back, live video / photo and a large capacity without any annual subscriptions and ripping fellows Americans off F Capitalism. Have a very good day.
Yes. Nest charges per camera. After this video was recorded, it launched a $5/month ($50/year) subscription. There are 50% discounts on subsequent cameras, so 2 cameras would be $75 per year and three cameras $100 per year under the new scheme. Check out Nest Aware on the company's web site for full details.
Unknown Man And when the thieves find your recording system, they will take that as well. I prefer the cloud. Once recorded no one without access to your account is able to remove it. And the notifications on your phone while you are away are like 80% of the value of the camera’s. If anything happens to your home you can act right away instead of finding out about it after getting home.
You want it to be hidden because it’s ugly. Also, the connector on the IQ version is much smaller than the non-IQ version, so you only need a 13mm hole in your wall instead of 22mm.
Nice review. Definitely not buying these. I’ll need 5 cameras for my house. If I bought a Nest system I’d need a second mortgage just to afford the data charges!
I am always a little miffed that none of you reviewing this camera, took the time to simply take shots of a license plate or lawn sign, at different distances, (5 feet. 10 feet. 20 feet. 30 feet. etc) with different cameras to really get a real more informed review on exactly how far a particular camera can see clearly. I wish people would actually review the lens capabilities of these cameras.
I have a nest doorbell camera.. With no subscription.. Someone stole my bike I reported it. The cops got the video recordings from Google nest and the criminals were found.. They have to turn over it to the cops but not to me the home owner.. That's my way around paying 😂
He was talking about the older non-IQ version of this camera. That was mounted with magnets. This IQ one is bolted to the wall. You should put it high up out of human reach anyway. Like 2.5 meters or higher.

I've got 4 swann cameras and 2tb hard drive, had them for years. They do the job, not brilliant but cost £350 and no further costs
The video doesn't come out the back of the camera. The power goes in the back of the camera. Video connects via wifi.
Data cap? Is this 2002? That's the last time we had that in Norway at least
Im curious if it can make the license plate on the sliver sedan around 2:21
It'd be nice if Nest put all this extra info about needing a subscription on their website.
it is under nest protect near the bottom about installers.
Is the night vision any better than the non IQ version?
What is the best camera to mount inside but focus on my vehicle outside? Being able to save any footage I may need?
Are you looking to shoot through a window/glass and at night?
Then no good cameras I found work well.
If it has night vision its IR illumination LEDs will reflect off the glass making it basically white. If it doesn't I still get glare from inside the home.
Really only works well in sunlight shooting from inside to outside.
I have both the nest cam and arlo pro 2 and the nest definitely has better video quality and less lag time.
so true. I had both and sold Arlo. NEST is so much better. Highly recommend it
If you get 2 cameras, do you have to buy 2 subscriptions?
Nope. One subscription covers your many Nest cams!
@@FahadAyaz Awesome thanks
The subscription is now 6 a month of all of your nest cams
Very good review. I find it amazing however that they have no way to set the cameras up so that they only record video when they sense motion and force you to use the 24/7 recording? I would think many people may have more enclosed areas where they don't need constant recording where motion-sensing would be just fine and use a lot less data.
That seems like an amazingly dumb error on their part to not offer that option in their app. Especially considering the price.
Geekman Greg well when your ring catches the ass end of something important and didn’t get all of the footage you need, don’t come crying.
If you're not recording, just using it to look live occasionally, does it still use so much data?
Yes, the Nest constantly streams to the cloud so that you always have footage available for review. It's a unique feature of the Nest products. If you don't want that, there are other cameras such as those from Ring, Arlo, Netatmo and others that only send video footage when they spot something. Have a look here: www.techhive.com/article/2998898/security-cameras/best-home-security-camera.html
can u see the livestream on this even tho youre away from your house ?"
I'm a Nest Pro and have been troubleshooting many camera product failures. For the price of the camera, one shouldn't have to purchase a new one after 2 years.
Can you read license plates parked side street
Quick Question. Can you set it up so when your home during the day it stops recording in order to save data? Then starts automatically on an evening or when you leave the house? Similar to the thermostat
mgnoodle no.
Thank you for the thorough review.
Very fair review, unbiased look. Thank you.
Thank you for this super detailed review. Great job!
can you delete data after reviewing to keep within the limited 100GB a month?
Tech hive, I’m particularly interested in seeing license plates on street vehicles from that range. Are you able to read most plates when it is properly set? Interested to read your experience!
Don’t know where you live, but it a lot of countries it’s prohibited to record public domain with a security camera. Why would you anyway.
So, if I need 8 cameras for my home I need to buy 8 data plans lets say for 30 days and 1 year im paying $2,400 per year for my security
cams?!?!?!
You have FUP in US for home broadband? I never saw such a thing in Europe
I have a question regarding the subscription . 5/10/30 Days .
I don't understand that
So if I get the 10 days does that mean it only scars recordings from the first of the month till the tenth day ? And the rest of the 20/21 days of the month won't be saved ?
The whole 10 days will be recorded and watchable. With markers in the app on a timeline where it noticed something. Any video beyond the 10 days is lost.
Awesome review. All my questions are answered!
This simple quick review made me immediately subscribe to you, Thank you sir
Good info , but what other security cameras would you recommend ? Maybe Backstreet security camera or lorex security camera , and maybe one with a dvr ?
You could have a DVR one but they are the first thing theives look for to take. So paying £40 a year to back up all my video footage is worth the price. I had swan and they are shit. in the end they went all green. I could not tell a person from stock. I had my cctv man out and he said get a propper kit. don't even waste money replacing these cameras.
any word on a new line up or solar version?
Excellent indepth review. Thank you.
Is the subscription required for the camera to work?
No. The Nest Cam works without a subscription but you are limited to live video only and snapshots (not video) from the last three hours, so it's really only useful with a subscription.
Do you know about another brand that works well with less money? Thank you!
Very good review so thanks for posting.
Did I miss the night vision?
Nice and clear explanation, thank you sir
Are you able to download video to disc or usb if you need it for the police
Dan S You can download video from the Nest website and save it to any media you like or email it.
Great vedio !I have outlets in my soffits so would have coverage for any camera from the weather which would u recommend the arlo pro 2 nest or nest iq ? Cause I like the nest just not the subscribe thingy thx keep up the good work...
Excellent review. Thank you!
I like the details you have mentioned!! Great great great jobs!!!

Wow,thats alot of money and data for just one camera.. Have you looked at the Yi Home security cams..they start off at $28 for the 720p cams and $45 for there 1080p cams and give you the option of using a sd card as well as cloud storage--why pay more if you don't have to--heres some sample footage:

Seems too expensive to me, I have multi-family properties, and one camera wouldn't be enough.
Exactly, Nest and Google are good, but the the best, I'd search for a commercial cam , I need 3 cameras to install front and back, live video / photo and a large capacity without any annual subscriptions and ripping fellows Americans off F Capitalism. Have a very good day.
Great vid . Very informative and to the point.
Very well done video. Thanks for all of the information
Does it come in large? That one is not big enough. o_0
I would love one, but can't afford both the camera and the fees lol it's one or the other I feel.
Hei I really enjoy your page ☺ Keep it up!
Price went up? $399
No support for credit card in Portugal, shame.
Home Internet Data Limitations? Never heard of that but I'm from the Eu.
If they would let you use your storage instead of the cloud, I would have purchased this in a heartbeat. Oh well.
Good ℹ, will go with the Arlo since I will get 5 and Nest charge 50 dollar extra per camera 😂
MutsFire Have you seen the new recent plans? Half the price of 10 days for 5 days worth of storage makes it really tempting
Paul L hard to beat 🆓 as Arlo has for a similar plan
Will check it out doh, bought the Arlo but it's fun keeping an eye on this anyhow
Arlo doesn’t look as clean as the nest. It’s like comparing a Toyota to a Lexus...
$100 a year per camera?
What are the cheap alternatives can I get if you’re on a budget?
@@harvestmoon1033 cheap alternative is to get hard wired system and put big hdd and dont pay 10$ every month
@@TechHiveVideo you do get a discount on the second camera
Unknown Man And when the thieves find your recording system, they will take that as well. I prefer the cloud. Once recorded no one without access to your account is able to remove it. And the notifications on your phone while you are away are like 80% of the value of the camera’s. If anything happens to your home you can act right away instead of finding out about it after getting home.
Thank you
I really don't think any wifi security camera needs to hide the power cable.
Google updated the Nest Aware- now it's unlimited cameras for $6/$12 per month
subscriptions ? no no, rip off .. there are hundreds of cam like this, no subscriptions, no wiring, no no hidden fee or extra fees
Why dollars???
Is it really so easy to steal?
He was talking about the older non-IQ version of this camera. That was mounted with magnets. This IQ one is bolted to the wall. You should put it high up out of human reach anyway. Like 2.5 meters or higher.
that price though
