  • Hello Friends! I needed one more somewhat formal dress for my cruise for the Hollywood under the stars evening, so I made a liquid gold caftan dress! I had purchased this micro-pleated fabric in NYC Garment District when i was there last and knew it needed to be this pattern! the Decades of Style TLC caftan pattern is easy to read, understand and execute, and I love the resulting dress! I have never worked with this kind of fabric before so I had to sort of feel my way through this build, so bear with me. there are some chats in this video for those of you who enjoy that sort of thing! Feel free to skip over that if you don't! I hope that you enjoy this video and leave me comments about what you are up to

I love the simplicity of the caftan lines. IMO it needs no dazzling at the waist. Go with a big Egyptian necklace and stacked hoop bracelets.

Good idea about the jewelery . As a accent the colour. Lapis or turquoise could look good.📿 That and smokey eye make up
      Could look fantastic.

I appreciate that there is someone else out there who is still concerned about COVID precautions when indoors in crowded areas. Actually, I wear a mask anytime I am indoors (except at home.) I do not want to push my luck.

We completed the first small part of our xeriscape project: a foundation planting turned to a river rock bed sprinkled with glass stones.
Now clearing creek banks to prevent flooding in case of haboob and watching "all the Star Treks". TOS is a real challenge; TNG less so, but still.... Finding my perceptions of various characters to be shifting after 30+ years.

Ohio Renaissance Festival! Skipped opening weekend because of rain, and then there was the rain, and, of course the rain. Yup. It has been dry the past week so the grounds should have solid footing today. Your shimmery gold caftan looks lovely.

I LOVE the gold caftan, even with the trouble of the mini pleats - it makes you look like a goddess (if you had golden apples to hand out it would not be out of character).
Your use of knit tape has given me the idea of how to stabilize the edges of the pieces for the costume I am currently working on (a theatrical production of Shrek The Musical and I am making Donkey. Which I do *not* recommend). So thanks for that! Perfect timing! (this fake fur is lovely and soft and has a lot of give, no major stiffness that you usually get with fake fur, but with that slippy-ness it is hard to sew. So the knit tape may give it just enough stability to be less of a headache.)

It looks fabulous without further sparkles! With that neckline, I'd add a statement necklace. Also, if there is enough of the gold left over, the 1930's evening turban would be my choice of headgear. Mostly because I would be able to ignore my hair for the event like the trash rat I am.

I love the caftan 🤩 You look like a sun goddess.
I'm glad to see you didn't hem it. I had a blouse made of similar fabric (different color) that wasn't hemmed and never frayed.
I've been waiting to find the right fabric to make that caftan. It looks so comfy 😊

The caftan is AMAZING! And leaving the bottom raw is 100% the right choice. I have pants of the same material but a different color. Easiest shortening job ever. My mom just cut the extra 6in off 😂
Instead of a jacket, what about wraps/shawls? I feel like you might get more practical use out of them post trip. You could get a beautiful silk wrap and either make or find someone who can/has knit a period appropriate wool wrap. A knit cardigan could be a good option too.

I finally Did The Thing so I could Do the Thing to Do the Thing! Cleaned and reorganized the desk so that I could set up and oil and thread the 1914 hand crank sewing machine so I could start actually working on the half-corset! The machine is quiet enough that I can actually watch/listen to things so I've been catching up on some of the beekeeping videos I've been not watching cause they're too long. Got the lining put together with boning channels attached. Still have to get the outer layer assembled, bones in, lining and outer attached to each other, oh yeah and straps, I'll need some of those. And the zipper, that shouldn't be too exciting (she says, not having installed a zipper in anything in something like 20 years).
And that gold is just stunning,, I don't think you could have made a better fabric selection!! Oh, and I have one sweatshirt with no hem cause I ran out of thread on the second go around one cuff and said eff it, it's polarfleece, it'll never unravel... and I have a stretch crushed velvet dress whose hem is... serged. Yup, that's it, that's all. Do what you gotta do to get the drape! There are no Hem Police!

I made a totally not period correct bustle skirt out of a similar fabric years ago. It was a beetle green on one side and a deep forest green on the other. The hem droops, the waistband is pulling off in places, and I've changed sizes many times since I made it, but its still one of my favorite projects just because it makes me smile.

Within the first few minutes you mentioned the binding again. Stop reminding me I need to make pieced binding for my king size quilt. Have I mentioned this one or a thousand times?
Also, the exact reason you love the foot is the reason I got rid of my Janome. I bought a Janome Skyline 7 is June 2020. I used it for six months and I could never find the perfect 1/4” foot. I boxed it up and bought a Pfaff. Let me tell you, that was love at first sewing sight. 😍🥰❤️
I enjoy your videos! It reminds me to continue to sew as a creative practice! Keep them coming!

That is gloriously glamorous! Thank you for the excellent tutorial on getting those sleeves attached. That's where I've been stalled on making my caftan for far too long. You are going to be the belle of the ball at the fancy parties on the cruise. We are planning a trip down to Disneyland in March (and Universal Studios and WB studios) as a 16th birthday, 18th birthday, high school graduation present for our son and 50th birthdays and 25th anniversary trip for my hubby and I. It's amazing how many big things happened during the main part of Covid. I hope you have a wonderful day and take care.

We just went to WorldCon 80 better known as Chicon 8. The covid policy required masks in all con areas. The hotel just strongly recommended it. I was amazed with the compliance with the policy. And very happy that it was followed because it appears that there were about a dozen cases of covid for a 4 day event with roughly 3500 attendees. So pay attention to both the covid policies and the likelihood that it is complied with. So there is hope for cons going forward.

That caftan is gorgeous! I made the short version in a super light cotton seersucker and it's great for the summer. I mostly use it as a swim cover. Current project is making a fitting toile of a button up shirt for my husband, because he deserves clothes that fit well too.

You made a modified Fortuny Delphos and it's amazing!
I think the webbing on the seams was a good call, especially on the shoulder seams, which take a lot of strain.
I hemmed some crinkle rayon earlier this year and I ended up doing a narrow, double-turned hem by hand and tried to keep the visible thread as tiny as possible. This prevented the hem from getting flattened and/or warped. Also with the crinkle rayon, I found that I could iron it flat along the seams and sew it, and the fabric would crinkle back up over time or when wetted and dried. I know that rayon and your mini-pleat fabric aren't quite the same, but maybe this will be helpful.

Ooooo, that looks LUX. I hope the raw edge on the bottom works out. It doesn't seem the fabric frays easily, so that may work out, cuz, yeah, both hemming options messed up the drape. Without those hems it hangs soooooo nice! I'd love for you to be able to sport that elegant flow on the cruise. Man, you'll be a stand-out in that caftan!

I have been watching your videos for a while because I love sewing (by hand) and since I'm a historybounder (10-12th century)(which can make you look like you are in an evil religious cult sometimes) I enjoy watching you make historical reproduction clothing! My day to day wardrobe consists of (mostly) linen or cotton chemises and wool or heavy linen overdresses. I wear them for comfort and you can do almost anything in a dress! Among this years projects were a 12th century wool greatcoat with embroidered cuffs, hood and pockets and a simple wool dress for winter. I'm currently designing-as-I-go a crocheted wool justacorps (short sleeve jacket thingy) to wear this winter. Thanks, Noelle, for all the entertainment and sewing shenanigans!

That caftan is absolutely fabulous! Perfect for your purpose. And I have GOT to get that pattern.
I just made my first linen shirt by hand, and I loved it! It's an 1800-1810 shirt for my husband who plays period songs on his dulcimer at a commemorative gathering to educate about the forceful removal of native Americans from Indiana, "Trail of Tears."
Now I'm going to make a chemise/smock/shift for me because I need linen to wear to bed, and I absolutely adore sewing linen by hand. As an extra, I made thread buttons by hand, too. They turned out great and work beautifully.
I am rereading "Gravity" by Tess Gerritsen. It is not the story of the movie with Sandra Bullock. This one is a creepy SiFi with alien parasites.

I am currently braiding some ropes (?) so I can hang up plants in pots in my window. (They are so cute and make me happy!) On the actual sewing side I am apparently in a purple phase, as I am nearly done with a purple cotton dress (buttons down the front, collar and big poofy sleeves), just buttons and buttonholes left and this weekend I have made a pattern and cut out pieces to a late medieval purple wool kirtle.
I also have a (green) velvet project waiting on me, that I have been procastinating on, as I need to unpick and resew some seams because I sewed the zipper in the wrong place. (Haven't worked on it since april, so I think I have patience for velvet again now.)
Recently caught up with all the new Marvel series and now I don't know what to do with myself. Even though I know there are a dozens of other things I have planned to watch since forever, but I'm currently in a Marvel obsession phase, so there's that.

I had a similar problem sewing stretchy lace fabric on a wedding gown. I hand basted a narrow strip of tulle to the edges so it would act like solid fabric, then cut the excess away. Worked great. Might not be historical, but I’d have tried a rolled hem with a serger so it was a lettuce edge.

That looks awesome! I'm thinking chunky Egyptian revival jewelry. And a turban! Also, ever since you started making the butterfly blouses I've been thinking - what if you made a matching skirt? Mid calf trumpet shape for daytime, and to the floor for evening. Or, since you've already extended the bottom, what about just turning the whole ting into a wrap dress or gown?

I like a well-tailored/fitted bodice with a simple skirt, but this caftan drapes beautifully. I would just decorate the black belt. That material deserves to be shown without additions, it is striking. I am getting an Art Deco vibe. This might be a slightly a later period than "the time mandate" of the cruise. I have seen some silent movies and I know that I saw caftans being worn. Currently watching and enjoying She-Hulk on Disney+.

    That came out beautifully.
This week I attempted to get a little further with a 1890s shirt that’s pattern was taken from original items. Well… the pattern pieces go to a few different items in the pattern, and the instructions even in the original language don’t really tell you anything so it already was going slow then when I went back to work cutting out mock up pieces this week I cut the sleeve slit on both sides of the sleeve *facepalm* I know the result’ll be worth it and all the chaos in mock-up insures a better end result but, boy is this testing my memory, sewing knowledge, problem solving and focus. Though I did take advantage of Blacksnail patterns’ sale so might be able to fly through the other items in the look. I have a class on wool coming up soon so I’ll be able to pick out the right fabric for the projects too.
I’ve also been looking into a weaving course at a local indie yarn store since there are some elements of Arthur Morgan’s rdr2 look I want to be more exact with, also just want to learn a new skill. I also discovered a local park looks like it might have been sourced for the game so I’m eagerly looking forward to visiting and planning a photoshoot when stuff is done. On a non sewing note I learned the disabled acting program that made me truly feel like I belonged for the first time in my life and gave me the confidence to be unapologetically me decided to have the class online again this year after all so I hopefully will get to participate in Queens theatre’s theatre for all again and build on what they taught me last year along with what I’ve learned on my own since. I’m excited!
This week I got to watch two incredible movies, Nope and Black Phone. Nope is my fave Jordan Peele project yet and Both were just incredibly well done. I’m glad the first films I’ve been able to watch in months ended up huge winners.
Reading wise I tried to start Persuasion after Karolina talked so highly of it in her video but, I ended up falling asleep, think I’m going to try playing it while working on the shirt and see if that helps me focus better. Also started Inkheart.

But I still don't think I would have gone as it's just gotten way too big, too many people for me. I am in costume-person panic mode as my daughter's dance company is doing Sleeping Beauty in less than three weeks and only 3 of 15 tutus are completely ready. And many more non-tutu costumes also need work. Eep!

This looks like some challenging fabric to work with, and I am proud of you for doing such a great job. I agree, it doesn't look like it's going to fray (especially since it's not going to get too much wear), so not hemming it is probably safe and will give it the best drape.
When you say maybe add gold and white sparkles all over, do you mean over the already metallic fabric? I'm not sure that would add anything, tbh. Plus, I'd be concerned about adding too much weight to the fabric and affecting how it hangs. But what you first talked about, faux jewels on the black belt, that would be just perfect. I could even see doing it in different colors, like you have sapphires, rubies, and emeralds on your belt. I feel like that would enhance the goddess/ queen look of the dress.
I suspect the butterfly blouse could become a new staple of your wardrobe. You look so good in them, and you have become a master at making them by now.
I'm knitting a hat right now. The weather is starting to get a little bit cooler. By cooler, I mean high 80's, but it's enough to remind me that fall is coming soon, and I like to have a new hat or two. (I just keep a box of hats next to my front door in the winter to grab from.) The pattern is one of several I bought last spring to support Ukrainian designers. It has lots of madly crossing cables, so I definitely have to pay attention to what I'm doing.
Thanks to Rachel Maksy, I just now decided that I need to reread the Borrowers series, so that's my new plan for the weekend.

I'm a new subscriber, but I've been lurking for a while. I really love your longer, vlog-style sewing videos! I started sewing at the beginning of the pandemic, and have since grown to love making jersey and woven dresses with full skirts. This autumn I've decided to get into blouses, shirts and skirts, and while watching this I'm finishing up a 1940's style rayon blouse. The fabric has a beautiful drape, but it's so hard to work with. I just hope I like it when it's done... Loving this caftan you've made! The gold fabric is so unique, and I think it works really well here. Looking forward to more of your videos!

Been organizing my wedding lately. I have my family and fiance's family to help so I'm not as stressed as I thought it would be, the stress will increase as we get closer to Jan 14th. I'm reading a few books at the moment, The Last Shadow Knight which I would give a 6/10 at the moment. Two of the POV's I care about the other one I don't care about at all because it's about someone who backstabs to get to the top which isn't nice. Brixton is a jerk. I love Venon and Chelsea though. I'm printing and trying out some new designs for concrete products at work, which is exciting. I'm excited to see your cruise experience. I wish I could go to a Brandon Sanderson event but I'm in Australia.
I made an oopsy on my flowery dress I wanted to make and I've been putting it off for so long. I wish to have more time to make dresses, because nowadays can't find much modest stuff I can wear, it's mostly shear stuff which is annoying, so been trying Op Shops for clothes and found some nice things that I wear every day. How's things been for you Noelle?

The Midas dress looks fantastic! Can't wait to see it IRL on the cruise. I'm finishing some accessories and trying to avoid adding any new projects to my to-do list for the trip.
I'm watching both House of the Dragon and Rings of Power. So far I'm enjoying Rings of Power more - partially because I prefer Middle Earth to Westeros, partially because I'm more invested in the characters. I'm rooting for the Harfoot and I love seeing locations like Moria and the elf kingdoms at their height!

You’re probably no longer looking at comments this late after posting, but I got sidetracked and forgot to comment. May help you save time getting your outfits ready for the cruise.
For outerwear, you can pick up a straight, shapeless overcoat in wool, and make it look ‘20s by adding a fur or velvet trim to make it look ‘20s. It can come to just below the knee or all the way down to mid-calf. Easily found in thrift stores. It’s the trim and the collar shape that will do the work for you.
Might save you a lot of time! Maybe you want to see all the things yourself, but maybe it’s something you can cut yourself some slack on?
If you’re not sticking to the 1920s, then changeable collar/cuffs/trim would make the same coat do for multiple eras.
Or if you must sew it all, would a cocoon coat be as simple to sew as it looks? Probably it not as simple as it looks to me, because I’m a compete amateur, but maybe easier than a full overcoat?

Oooh! She’s purty!!🤩🤩 Simple, but incredibly elegant. Great idea, Noelle!! The best part is that caftan looks comfortable, which I always thought was the antithesis of formal. You’re kind of breaking my brain right now, but I’m still having a blast living vicariously through your vlog adventures. Have fun at d23!
I am up to my eyeballs in wool at the moment! My dad bought me some beautiful dyed wool for my birthday, so I started spinning it into fingering weight yarn with the intention of knitting Shawlography by Stephen West, his MKAL (mystery knit-along) from last year. He announced this year’s MKAL last week, so I abruptly switched gears and started spinning for that one, instead! All told, I’ll get both shawls in the long run, so I’m super tickled!! I’ve only been spinning since May, but I’m feeling pretty confident in my ability. There’s a TON more to learn, but I make a halfway decent basic fingering yarn.
Reading: Sandman, Vol 1, Neil Gaiman. It’s been a hot minute! I read it when it came out, now I’m reading the 30th anniversary edition. Refresher before the series. On that note, I’m off to bed. Goodnight, be well, be safe, and love, light, and blessings to you and yours, always.

OK, i might be convinced to make a caftan now.... yours is so lovely!! Also, I have a similar but not nearly as fancy foot that I bought from an Instagram ad and I'm completely in love with it. Like, don't know how I ever managed to sew without it. That and the overlock foot. Sheer genius!! Sewing wise, I fixed the poorly drafted zero instructions bodice from an etsy pattern (stupibme!) and did all the math and ripping for the ruffled tiers and am entering uncharted territory by adding a waist band and making it an actual wrap dress as opposed to a faux wrap cinched with a waist tie. Life wise, my husband got his drain out today from when his appendix burst a month ago. Words cannot describe the thrill of that. Seriously. And now we get to leave in 3 wks for our Italy trip that we were supposed to take 2 years ago. So all in all, thing are going pretty dang good.

I'm excited to go home because my credit card bill cleared after an expensive month and I can order fabric for a kimono I want to sew without trying to figure out Germany's alternatives to Paypal. I'm also wearing my second iteration of my TLC kaftan. First was long and in double gauze. It's too hot for summer, the pockets are too small and the length tries to kill me and make it look like an accident (I could hem it shorter and also lengthen the pockets, I just keep forgetting to). This one is a delightfully flowy viscose, the short version and I'm using a pocket pattern I use on my other dresses that fits my phone and wallet on one side and my planner in the other. The only remaining issues are that, while I'm not left wanting, I'm not blessed enough on top to not have this flash when I wear it, so I have to baste the top in place, and the pockets hit too low. Nothing for it, I'm gonna have to make a third one. Woe is me. 😇
