  • Hello Friends!
This week we are making the Decades of Style TLC Caftan! I saw that Abby made one and I just had to have it! I also have a few little chats in here for ya because this pattern was super easy to put together! I would recommend it to people! It looks complicated at first, but once you get in there and just follow the instructions, everything is all good!
    I hope you all enjoy!

Complimenting someone's outfit when they're new to a community (for sewing, a specific fashion, cosplay/costuming, whatever) really does help. I went to a con once wearing my first ever lolita coord and someone who looked amazing came up and said some really nice things and asked what print I was wearing and if they could take a picture with me. It was the nicest thing ever and made me feel so included.

Thanks for the slight detour about being nice. I was feeling a little self-conscious because someone recently approached me and ask for advice about starting a small embroidery business. I embroidery, but not as a business. She's young enough to be my child and just starting out. I talked her through several things, helped her source supplies, gave her tips, and then insisted she share her address. I sent her a little starter box of organizing supplies, a display for getting good photos, and a few other things. She was grateful. But, I worried that I was pushing too much. You have eased my mind and my heart. Your words were like a confirmation that I did the right thing.

You mentioned Lithuania and I was like "Yeah. Yeah, we do make the best linen you can get. Damn, I'm so proud of my country right now, even though you overpaid for the fabric" :D The usual price per metre is about 8 to10 euros. You can find so many options of linen you wouldn't believe. But, boy oh boy, good luck finding normal silk fabric for historical costuming here...

I’m glad to find that other people take a while to cut out their fabric. I cut out 3 pairs of kids undies and a pair of shorts for one of my girls and was bummed that I didn’t actually get anything sewn because it took so long to get those small items cut out.
Also, while fabric production is definitely hard on the environment and big companies don’t always pay their workers well, I’m currently living in Bangladesh, and the garment district and RMG (as they call it here, ready made garments) has been shut down for a long time and is slowly getting back to production. The whole country takes a huge hit when the RMG companies are out of production. They help support the whole country. So, if you’re buying fabric made here, it actually helps support workers. Given the local salaries in general are quite low, garment industry work is actually one of the better paying respectable jobs a young woman can get. The salaries seem horribly low to us, but for here, they’re considered not too bad. My personal opinion is that putting pressure on the companies we buy from to sustainably source and ethically pay the workers who make their garments, by inspecting factories and collaborating with the manufacturer on fair treatment, and, this is the big key, being willing to pay more for clothing that is produced by the companies that do those things can help. I think the more we are all willing to have less, better made clothing and to pay more for that quality, the better for the workers and the environment.
Your Caftan is beautiful. That color is beautiful on you.

I started to sew just 2 months ago and was shocked by how much fabric costs (I though making my own clothes would be cheaper than buying). It was a huge eyeopener to how cheap(not in a good sense) fast fashion is, because if just one yard of cotton costs more than a finished garment from let`s say H&M, just how cheap and low quality must the fabric they use be, and how cheap must the labour be, if the companies still make a profit? it`s insane!

The conflict of ethically sourced is so universal in the art/creative community. This is something I end up talking with friends a LOT about. I'm an oil painter, my soul sister is primarily a watercolourist, and there's emotional conflict that just. Comes with using paper, or paints, or anything. We use them so much more as creatives than the average joe will, so it just. ...Ends up weighing on you, when you're emotionally conscious. I'm so glad you got a win with the fabric dilemma.

I completely understand the feeling of needing a win. There’s so much horror being brought to light, and everything “simple” like wearing a mask seems to be political when it’s anything but...on top of the imminent loss of one parent while the other parent is losing a battle with Alzheimer’s...I feel like I’m drowning. There are no words for how grateful I am for this connection to community. I’m so happy to see your beautiful face and to have a few minutes of escape. Sometimes you just need to take a breath, and your vlogs help me do that. Thank you so much for all you do; you are deeply appreciated! May the next week bring you joy, comfort, and accomplishment, my friend. Be well.
Edit: I ADORE the colors you chose for your Bougie Mumu (omg, best name ever!). I’m gonna have to break down and get the pattern and some decent linen because I need some bougie goodness in my life. Oh! You’re so right that the “I did it! Go me!” feeling never goes away... I’ve been knitting for 40 years, and I still feel bulletproof when I finish something well. Much love, and thank you again.

Ethical fabric is hard. I was asked to speak about sustainable fashion and I was shunned from the circle of people who organized the event because I said that even "sustainable" fabrics have problems. sustainable materials can be treated with hazardous chemicals. Transport. Sourcing of materials. There are so many way that things can go bad, its nearly impossible to be 100%. So I talked about re-use and up-cycling. Apparently that was not the message I was supposed to tell.

I tend to get fabric from thrift shops - sheets, actual fabric pieces, old clothing :D I admit I sew mainly doll clothes (BJDs mostly) so it's easier to get enough! I still spend tooo much on remnants at fabric stores tho :(
Plus, my daughter is getting married, so that's the Mother of the Bride dress, the Rehearsal Dinner dress, and her (pure silk tulle) veil that I am making. Bought most of it at Mood Fabrics. Once in a lifetime so shoot me :( LOL

Okay this just may convince me to make a caftan. That is cute and I want more loungewear because real clothes are kind of a no right now.
Yeah, LA fashion district is mostly huge piles of remnants. Back when Michael Levine was still there, that stuff wasn't always leftovers, but places like Home Fabrics and stuff are. It's how you can get designer silks for $16/yard. A lot of it is high end last season interior decor textiles so, fun fact, I'm making a francaise out of a blue and gold striped silk that I saw in "Vice" on one of the DC sets. Super tempted to make a tiny Cheney doll to have ride on my hoops but no one would get it. (And I'd be too tempted to stick it full of pins). A bunch of the stuff Mood has is "remnants" too; all the stuff that is marked CL is bolts and bolts of 'rescued' fabric.

PENDELTON! I bought my dad a t-shirt from Pendelton, it cost over $30 it is SOOOOOO worth it! Also they work WITH Native Artists to create their patterns they don't just steal the patterns so that's amazing.
Other "ethical" places to get fabric. Second-hand stores like Goodwill, eBay, Freecycle, Facebook Marketplace. None of these are ideal because you mightn't find the fabric you need and it probably wasn't sourced ethically in the first place BUT you can prevent the fabric from going to landfill and that's a good thing.

But yeah ALDI has very high quality non-brand products, and the secret is: Very early on, ALDI persuaded famous brands to produce ALDI specific products. It is the same product just with different wrapping. If you look up the production number/place you can see that it is produced in the same famous brand plant just that the famous name is not mentioned. This way producers could keep their more pricey high street production stable and all surplus went to ALDI. I do not know how they are doing abroad, but it is still a practice here in Germany.

One of the things I learned, it's that some fashion's house (like Dior or Well's) would not take a bold of fabric if it contains a flaw and you can find them on Wholesale shop or fabric district.
If I don't like something, I don't comment as I don't want people to comment on my stuff.
Sewtine and others received nasty comments because they are not European., I wonder how much it's jealousy or should I say stupidly.
I should make a Kaftan one day. Enjoy your week

I'm a weaver and I work with linen a lot. It fluffs, even the good quality linen. In Finland where I live it is used a lot on sauna textiles and usually the guide is to wash new linen stuff alone because otherwise you end up having full load of items covered with the fluff when it comes out from the washer. The fluff can actually also clog your washer so you want to check your lint filter specially after the first wash.
For those who are new to linen you also want to soak it before washing. That helps the washing process and makes the fabric come out less wrinkled, because linen needs a lot of water. The soaking makes the linen absorbs less water from the washer so there is more water during the washing process. Because of it's need of water it is not recommended to wash linen in full load either. And you want skip the pre-washing program from your washer also with linen. Slower washing speed and higher water level will decrease the amount of lint coming off during the first washes. You will want to avoid long spin-drying cycles as long spin times might cause permanent wrinkles to the fabric. You should iron it when it is damp after washing it. The wrinkles comes out easier in that point. If you let it dry when it is wrinkled you are in a lot of work to get them out. But it is absolutely wonderful material and gets better with time. With each washing the fabric will get more softer and more comfortable to wear because of that. And the plus side is that because it is antibacterial as material you don't have to wash it as often and you need your synthetic clothing.
Loved your log with this by the way. From some reason I have been watching a lot of costumers lately and you guys make me want to tackle my sewing phobia lol. I have hate love relation ship with my sewing machine. I work with it because I have to do finishing touches for my weaving's, other than that I try to stay out from it. But you guys make me want to try find peace with it lol. Maybe some day.

I just finished The Man On The Mountain which was an Audible original a few months ago I think and really enjoyed it and am still listening to the Love to Sew podcasts and working on seaming together the pieces for a hand sewn petticoat from what’s left of a white cotton sheet. I may consider coffee dying it though because I’ve already spilt coffee on both this and the Shift before it 🤷‍♀️. I would like to try all the chocolates from all over the world! When I was a little girl, there was one small shop in town that had small balls of individually wrapped German chocolate and it was so delicious! I’ve had other chocolate from Germany since, and it was never as good. I’ve had chocolate in Mexico, which is different, but still amazing, and the origin of chocolate. And pretty much every country I go to, I try to find chocolate. So, one day perhaps I will get a chance or get chocolate from Norway. Is there a source for this chocolate in the US, that you know of? We’ll be heading back for a few months whenever this Covid business has lightened up a bit.

@@merindymorgenson3184 Yes! There is a website called scaninavianfoodstore(dot)com and I would get the Freia Melkskjokolade (milk chocolate) and the Nidar Stratos to start with. They are both milk chocolates but the Stratos has air pumped into it so it has a magical texture. The Kremtopper and Krokanrull are also very good.

This is really interesting commentary about fabrics. I am just beginning to sew (by hand - loud machinery things scare me!), but am a spinner and weaver. Currently weaving off some towels so that I can warp up some handspun (from local sheep) to weave a wool fabric for a ruana. I will have to ladder stitch it together to get it wide enough, and will likely hem it, but minimal sewing and max fabric use. We are continuing to lose mills, although the movement for sustainability etc is definitely rebuilding some of the infrastructure that may lead to reopening at least some of the small mills..for instance, some wool processors are reopening here and there....Thanks for being so awesome, Noelle!

I've been working on sewing more masks for friends and family, and I've finally gotten the mock-up for my friends corset figured out! It was definitely a nice win, and a great feeling to have it finally done so I can work on the real thing. I've been sewing off and on for 17 years, and every time I finish a sewing project, it's a huge win, and a great feeling.
I'm currently finishing up The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu. I would definitely recommend. It's a fantasy novel, but it's about Mozart's sister. It's really interesting, and if it continues to be this good through the end, it will probably be my favorite book. And next, I'm going to Read Rise of Kyoshi. As a huge ATLA fan, I'm so hyped.
I'm also working on the idea of wearing skirts. I've never been the type, but I love the look, and even if it's only for cosplay, I want to wear them, but it's a hard idea to wrap my head around. I'm starting to warm to the idea, but I'm not quite there.
    Artfully, Iason
