    The only actually good video essayist on youtube!
    I can't help but see this as a meditation on the clash between enlightnment and the unkown in a kinda weird historical period. Watching these characters very honestly struggle with their scientific and rational ambitions in the face of the unreconcilable and evil was way more interesting than Orlok tbh. Eggers movies always make me feel like we're all just on an infinite path to modernity that we will never reach the end of.
    Good stuff

      good point. it is easy to read into the film the societal anxieties of today, where enlightened progressivism is under threat from older, more destructive instincts.

      @@jfrsnjhnsn And now we have an equally good one. The original is still insurpassable.Herzog's is an original and intriguing reinterpretation, and Eggers uses one of the oldest cinema staples to harken back to romanticism and its concept of horror. Why must we pit versions against each other, when all are made by geniuses so many years apart?

    I don't think the idea of elevated horror was ever really that horror never was "elevated" or nuanced. Anyone with a love for horror I think would agree that there are dozens upon dozens of examples off "elevated horror" throughout storytelling history. However, I think the term "elevated horror" was coined more or less to label a sort of renaissance that the genre has had in the past decade or so. I don't think it's wrong to say that for a decent amount of time horror had become the joke of the industry. Primarily the 2000s and early 2010s. Endless Paranormal Activity, Saw, awful sequels and remakes of classics (Texas Chainsaw, Friday the 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street) and an infinite amount of forgettable slashers, haunting, and torture movies. Yes, there were exceptions in that timeframe, and yes, those have their place in the genre, and of course make the genre as fun and creative as it is. it would also be ignorant and senseless though to say that there is no difference between that era of horror, and the era of horror we're in now.

    • @stanners1714
      @stanners1714 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I think you’re absolutely correct. As someone in their 20s making their way through older films it is clear that the mainstream horror movies of the 2000s and 2010s have really changed the parameters of what is expected by a general audience in horror films (generally a reliance on jump scares or gratuitous gore, neither of which I have a huge problem with in moderation) and a lot of what is considered ‘elevated horror’ really just feels like an attempt to create horror films that return us to the the days where franchise horror and truly thought-provoking and psychologically scary horror films could both coexist.

    I just finished watching nosferatu by Robert’s Eggers and it was juts mindblowing and dark in many ways , shape and form . The entrence of count orlok it was speechless I was breathtaking the whole movie . I almost feel I was gonna have a heart attack or a panic attack the cinematography and the atmosphere is beautiful grotesque . This new version of count orlok is egregiously beautiful, is like literary a living corpse lurking in the shadow , watching nosferatu was watching your worst nightmare come true : by far the best version of nosferatu and well nailed it . 10/10

    This is an interesting take, honestly i didnt see ellen wanting orlock personally, it seemed more like she was under his spell and when she had agency she did not want him until she was forced fo sacrifice herself - the last scene read to me more like a rape scene and it made me feel very uncomfortable how it was presented as a positive thing. To me they tried to make Ellen matter by giving her this backstory with Orlock and then all that she was worth for was her body - the sexual side of this did not exist this explicitly in the original and thats why it jumped out at me this much. In the year 2024 we still feel the need to make a movie where a woman's rape is apparently what saves the world, it made me feel sick. Maybe I'm being dramatic about it but this is how the film read to me on the first watch.

    • @LiftedBlader
      @LiftedBlader 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      I think you're spot on. I felt immensely disappointed with Nosferatu in the same way I did with The Green Knight. I knew nothing going into either, saw what was going on in the first 20 minutes, and spent the next 2 hours feeling like I got suckered out of my time and money. They gesture at high minded themes, but, to me, it came off as boring fatalism and romanticized toxic social artifacts as they're both about a self-sacrifice from opposite ends of the binary

    • @shadowscrawl5087
      @shadowscrawl5087 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@LiftedBlader you're missing the deeper subtext. This is a story about childhood abuse, Ellen is a victim of Nosferatu from a very young age, she tries to seek help from those closest to her, but they don't see that what she is experiencing is real, and they never truly listen to her until it's already too late. She displays her trauma in ways that are unpleasant to those around her, and even though they want to try and comfort her without acknowledging the uncomfortable reality of what's happening, they shame her and use harsh methods to make her "manageable". the final scene is absolutely meant to be read as a rape scene, and it isn't supposed to be heroic or happy. The only solace is that she got to take her abuser down with her, it's not heroic, just tradgic

    RE: The reason for the changing of character names and locations. I think David J. Skal's research stands, and it holds that the changes were to avoid copyright issues. At the time, the laws regarding copyrights between novels and films, was a bit vague and the producers of this film thought that these changes would make them safe from suit (they were wrong). Lastly, as Prana-Film, the company created by Albin Grau and Enrico Dieckmann, was a fledgling affair (Nosferatu was their first, and as fate would have it, only film). Given the notes left by Murnau himself, and even the sketches he made, we should NOT think of the Prana-Film company as a well financed venture (as suggested in the film 'Shadow of the Vampire" starring John Malkovich as F.W. Murnau) but rather a loose band of independent filmmakers off on their first cinematic effort. As such, I seriously DOUBT that Prana-Film had the wherewithal to conduct such a marketing study.

    I disagree with you on so many levels.
    I feel like History Buff & American Born Eggers copy-pasted what worked about the Witch and hoped they would translate equally as well onto a film he was entirely out of his depth on. Eggers does not intrinsically understand the prolonged dread of Plague ridden European city sides. He doesn’t share Herzog’s heartbreaking perspective as a young man idolising the beginnings of German Expressionism while suffering the shame of a post-WW2, post-Nazi Regime, Germany. Certainly, Eggers is not a woman balancing the tantalising mix of sensuality and repression we’ve come to associate vampires with today. He borrows from these perspectives, mashes them together, but fails to understand the authenticity behind them. He fails a balancing act of preserving the ideologies of the source material, and imparting a fresh perspective as the auteur. There is nothing new here, except a moustache and Depp’s on screen recreation of an orgasm. The sexualisation lacks any desire or eroticism. It’s all aggression without fear and false promises of a better movie.
    That being said, I have no clue why your comment section is so vicious. I appreciate your perspective and usually agree with you. I like hearing somebody take film seriously.

    Sincerely Yusaf
