  • In this episode of Freeze Frame, Eggers, Skarsgård and Dafoe recall their first introductions to the famous vampire, how they developed the characters and what they enjoyed the most about working with each other.
The film reimagines the 1922 horror classic of the same name and follows the fearsome Count Orlok and his infatuation with a haunted young woman, Ellen, played by Lily-Rose Depp. The impressive ensemble also features Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin. “This is such a remarkable cast of very brave, committed, hungry actors who really wanted to be there,” Eggers shared. “It was such an enjoyable experience.”

This film is I think a very intriguingly presented story about trauma, abuse and listening to victims, how hurt people struggle with loneliness and being unable to articulate their pain and how expressions of that trauma makes others uncomfortable in so many different ways. And Orlok himself just being yes this being of carnal desire, but as an abuser he reaches his victim by exploiting her base desires, her desire for companionship and intimacy at her lowest low. And the scary part is that there is some kind of give there, he’s able to be truly abusive because he is able to give her something and there can be such shame in reconciling that give and take of an abusive relationship, like she is disgusted that she enjoyed parts of it. She has to convince herself of the truth, which is that she isn’t like him because of that.
This exploration of her character is ultimately what grounds this film and makes it so disturbing.

Who listens to critics anymore? If I think something looks cool, I see it. If not, I don't. If anything, I see a negative review and I tend to think the opposite is true. Unless it's just so obviously bad that it is being universally panned by everyone who sees it.

Critics are either kissing asses or trying to be looking smart by overly criticising good things.
They will praise the bad and despise the good just to act like they know better than others. Pretentious and useless, way too often.
      This movie is wonderful.

"We have not become so much enlightened as we have been blinded by the gaseous light of science"
My favorite line in the film, and a familiar line of thought to those of us familiar with the C.S. Lewis work "The Discarded Image", and equally to us who understand the disenchanted nature of our post-enlightenment scientism-driven "modernity".

Rob is definitely my favorite director of the last 20 years, I've pondered this a since _The Lighthouse_ blew me away, and honestly I can't think of another filmmaker who's work has effected me more. With only 4 feature length films, he has already established himself as a massive talent and trailblazer in the artform, giving all the great filmmakers a run for their money. He's making the dark, deeply immersive and passionate cinema I've always pictured myself making, and with such spectacular actors and actresses every time, and the repeated collaborations with Dafoe who I love, I just know that I'm going to love whatever this guy does next. _Nosferatu_ literally just came out and I'm already anxious for his next project, which appears to be a sequel to Labyrinth. Even if Bowie's no longer with us, I know Rob is going to make something spectacular to expand that world, that greatly admires and honors the original work 🙏
