Okay I am officially old. I'm getting all excited about a guy in a suit playing smooth jazz. Fully SHOUTING on the break "NEVER TOO MUCH NEVER TOO MUCH NEVER TOO MUCH"
PJJr is just getting better, wow. forgetting the phone-sound that is a superb feel. The wes-octaves with killer slides and those maj7-arps at 2.50. What a player. Thanks for posting.
God damnit that guy can play. One of the best ones that are legendary in popular music. He's played on so many classic Pop tunes it's insane to not say he's not a legend.
Oh Shit! One of my favorite Luther songs and he kills. Fellow guitar players if you think you are good listen to this because it is humbling. Thank you Paul for showing us there is so much more to learn.
Hi Ernest, Doc powell is fine but I expect, maybe due to my age, I go back to the originators of this style, and for me, bearing in mind this is just my personal opinion, no one can ever equal the incomporable George Benson. He has it all, deep harmonic sophistication, sweet and endlessl creative melody and super soulful phrasing. Norman brown is clearly a GB disciple and for that reason I enjoy his work too. But i think oneof the best successors to George, going in a more urban direction, is the sadly departed Ronnie Jordan. You can go back further though and look at some of the cats that George was influenced by such as Grant Green, Wes and Kenny Burrell. A hugely underated player who can play in many jazz based idioms is the incredible Grant Geismann, check him out! The wonderful Lee Ritenour has done some great smooth jazz based albums and I recommend Wes Bound. There were other cool cats back in the 70s such as BoogalloJoe Jones and Jimmy Ponder, and Gabor Szabo did some interesting ethnically tinged cool jazz, but I always find myself coming back to George.
Sounds cool Ernest, although I think when player's get to this level it is not so much about who is 'best', but what your personal preference is, and maybe recognising what they have done to originate or develop that style of music. Peace
Just realized... If someone glued his feet to the floor... He couldn't play more than six notes... LMAO... Great stuff thanks for posting... Bass player ain't bad either...😆

@@fusionfan6883 I went to see Doc Powell last year and talk about George Benson was his Mentor. My opinion is Wes Montgomery was the Best.

They seem to only allow the synthesiser sound short shrift. Disproving because of artificial nature of the sound.
