Thank you for doing this series. I truly appreciate the deep dives you do into the care and growth of each specific plant.
I purchased a tiny almost rooted cutting last summer and it grew fairly well. When I received a grow tent for Christmas I thought perhaps my melano would enjoy the warm humid environment but I was wrong. She almost immediately dropped a few bottom leaves 😭 I’ve chopped her up and am going to start her over. Here’s hoping I can get her to thrive this year 👍

Ohhh no problem 😊 glad uoy are enjoying. Sorry to hear about the issues with the tent. Mine has air movement due to fans in the conservatory as I have lost too many velvet leaves on plants before I added air flow, but to humidity levels. Hopefully your will perk up and thrive soon 🤞🤞🤞

New subscriber here, very nuanced reviews, great job! I don't own a melanochrysum but it's definitely high in my list. Impeccable accent in Greek, I bet you have a Greek background. Keep up the good work!

I’m an immediate re-potter, too. I started my melano last summer in a cabinet. It got too big for the cabinet, so I moved it out, but was worried about humidity, so I stuck it close to a humidifier. Well, moisture damage to several leaves ensued, so I feel like a chop and prop session is in our future. Despite this set back, I do enjoy this plant. I agree - 7 out of 10 from me.

Awwww glad I am not the only one with the repot. Shame on the leaf damage, but as you say, opportunity to propagate 😉

Thumbs up to janky support sticks and velcro tape!👍 I bought my melano about a year ago as a rooted top cutting with small leaves(6cm). The leaf size is now around 17cm so slowly it’s getting bigger. Mine also has the same cataphyll issue. Sometimes I can’t help myself, I gently, slowly tease the new leaf out.🤣

Yayyyy so it's not just me with the sticks and velcro. That is awesome that you are seeing it sizing up 👏👏👏👏👏💚🌿

I have had mine for almost two years now. I got it as a long bare stem with one leaf at the top. It has been a long journey of propagating my way down the stem by air layering, cutting propping then repeating. It has worked out well and been a fun project. My mother plant is doing awesome but I noticed I get bigger leaves when
    1. it has a good root system
    2. High humidity
I kept mine in a tall glass vase until I got my table top greenhouse. It did well with support sticks but I really want big leaves so I gave it a " lazy moss pole" I got the idea from the TH-cam channel unplantparenthood.
It is in an bout 80% humidity right now, medium/ bright light. In chunky aroid mix and it is doing well.
It is a beautiful plant but if you get a small one you will have to work to get it to thrive in my experience. But I find joy in that so it works out good for me. 😊 I would not recommend this plant for an intermediate plant parent.

Mine won't grow ANY new leaves that won't get stuck and rip! When my husband purchased the plant from our garden center the leaves on it were about a foot long. 5 leaves in now I'm getting leaves that are about 3 - 4 inches long. One of the stems just produced a broken, wont even unfurl because it's still stuck around itself, tiny leaf of ONE INCH long. It was pure white when it emerged. It is so frustrating!!! The Melano is about to get replaced as my no. 1 favorite philo of all times by the Jerry Horne. This one grows like wild fire just right next to the Melano, without ever getting stuck while unfolding because the way those new leaves emerge from the cataphyl is so different. Argh, I am about to cut all the new, distorted grow back on my Melano and start over right above those foot-long leaves. With summer coming up I hope for an improvement... Thanks for your thoughts on this beauty that it surely is. Sorry for that, but nice to see that yours does still rip, too... :D Regards from Germany

Ohhh very interesting, thanks for sharing your experience, I have had similar comments from other people too, with leaves ripping and becoming smaller.
Ohhh I have heard good things on the JH too, is it as good as prople say?

I got a real fresh bottom cutting potted in what looked like river mud. Repotted it into something waaaay better draining and stuck it in a fairly bright west facing window, took a minute to create a new growth point but a month out and it just opened its first (in my care) bebe leaf! Just hoping I can continue to keep the new leaves from ripping themselves to shreds :).

Awww that is such a great success story 👏👏👏👏 I will keep all fingers crossed 🤞 🤞 🤞 🤞 that the leaves don't rip 🍀🍀🍀🤞🤞🤞

I got an almost rooted bottom cutting. Finally started growing long and janky. I broke it. My bad. But the top rapidly grew roots in water on a heat mat in my humidity cabinet. It has a new leaf growing, but I’m not brave enough to pot it up yet. I’m gonna let the roots develop.

Ohhh I get it, also even if the roots grow long you could try semi hydro too 😊

💚 I exaggerate after a week - double stress (I never understood it) exaggerate just like you do. is at home - bad land - exaggerating = everyone is alive and well!
💚Melano ... I had it for the summer. from one palm-sized leaf, the other half (this was the tip I rooted)
Beautiful roots but leaves still small.
I got stuck in the fall. It took root very quickly ... But I still have small leaves. I was riding a bamboo stick - now I'll try with the board (fingers crossed)
No leaf has ever been stuck, in ppp - almost every one😶
💚thanks for the film - now in Poland, I really, really need normality to have the strength to help...

Great video I’m having trouble with fungus/ mildew how did you treat it on your melanochrysum?

I live in a sub tropical region in Australia and hence my plants are in a shade house. This enables all the bugs and beasties to visit my plants.Keeps me busy. My poor melanochrysum was obliterated last year by one very hungry fat caterpillar. It ate every leaf. The plant finally has produced a couple of leaves but its looking very sad. A leaf at the top and a few starting down the near the soil. Should I propagate it to improve its chance of producing leaves or does it stand a chance at filling in the gap that is in the stem?? I have just put it on a moss pole in the hope the aerial roots (if it had some) will grow into the medium and gain some extra nutrition. Mealy bugs don't hold a candle to the grass hoppers and caterpillars here. They are hungry buggers
    Thanks
    Tammie

I usually cut the width of ,y velcro ties to create really thin stripes when not much is needed... it goes a lot farther

So out of curiosity- is it hard and expensive to heat your conservatory? Do you ever worry about your plants not being in your house? Thanks Memo!

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey hey hey, not particularly hard to heat it, it's plumbed into the main heating system of the house, but in really cold winters I do also put an oil electric heater on and it can get a bit pricey, but nothing too too crazy. In terms of worrying they are not in the house not too much, the level if humidity and the light level makes up for it 😊

Mine is on a support stick and the leaves are getting smaller. It's also very bald on the bottom so I think I'm going to chop and prop soon 😅 hopefully it lives through it
