Dad had a Hillman Hunter up until about 83 when I was twelve (the colour was gold). Unfortunately I can't remember the exact model and never thought to ask him. I was thinking of his old cars and I remembered the Hillman Hunter so started to look for videos. This is giving me goose bumps.

Very nice classic car !... The Beach boys "Good Vibrations" from 1966 is the perfect track to compliment this great swinging 60's car ! :)

My grandfather had a Hillman Minx. My dad had one but its was Hillman Hunter. Remember very good the soft motor sound. Also the power that the car had when starting at first gear. This was a ideal family car in Perú.

My grandfather bought me one for my first car, hence the love for such a unique vehicle! We have a behind the scenes VLOG of the day we filmed this and i get to drive it! Check it out on our VLOGS 2018 playlist :) Thanks for sharing

A works Hillman Hunter won the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon, I remember it well as the rally was competitive through our property. The same car was driven by the same man, Andrew Cowan of Scotland in the 1993 re-enactment rally. Once again it came through our property.

My 1st ever car. 1725cc Hunter. For 17 year old in 1977, it was a real catch in its day. Lovely car , lovely memories with 1st girlfriend in it too...

Same as me ! 17yr old with a 1970 Hillman Hunter 1725 GL white in 1977, paid £325 with 88000 miles on the clock,
I put wolfrace wheels on her , overdrive gearbox, twin carbs, it would easily beat 1600e cortina,s
Those were the boy racer days, sadly don’t have any photos!

I owned a 1968 GL model in the late 80's my aunt gave it to me for my 21st. The colour was Golden Glory though it was spoiled by the matt black front wings, the bodywork was covered in patches of ping and grey primer. Though it was on the log book as a 1725 it had a 1500 which had been fitted for my aunt by a dodgy garage. I managed to find a recon 1725 from a scrapyard who thought they were selling me a 1500 for £25, I only found out it had recently been reconned after stripping it down, I fitted an overdrive, twin Stromberg CD's. Stripped all the wood re-stained it and ended up driving it for a few months with all the dials held in with PVC tape.

Just the other day, another (3rd, I think now) Hillman GT turned up on E-Bay.
I should have gone for it and bought it; seemed in fair condition and only went for £2700 but i bottled it (again).

Enthusiasts for British cars during 'the rust years' can consider it fortunate that cars were exported (some as CKN) to warm countries at that time. So many models have survived that would now only be memories or museum pieces.

I had both a hunter and a minx. In my youth the hillman was converted into a rally car and the minx was my daily driver. I loved both of them and i was devo when i had to sell the rally car, and more so when the minx cooked the engine in the middle of know where. Lol miss them both where awesome cars.

Brilliant car from brilliant age of motoring….so talented those who can renovate. Went to NEC classic car show few years ago, most of vehicles were trailered to and from the show and we mortals couldn’t touch them! Much better when the classic is driven regularly and used as its original purpose.

Awesome video and the sound is the sound of my teens and early twenties!
We had two Hunters, both safari wagons, one a 70 with 1500 engine and 3sp auto, the other a 72 with the 1750 twin carb engine and 4 speed manual.
The 72 was first and was dug out of a shed across the road from my dad's work and brought back to life, but was quite rough, and one day we cooked the engine and that was that for that one.
Then came the 70, and it lasted quite a number of years, with yearly head gasket changes :-) It was in better shape than the 72, and was fun to drive in a reverse-hoon way. As slow as slow can be, and the auto snapped our necks changing gears, and the funniest part was that the front wheels don't angle correctly for the different arcs that they follow in turns, they just turned the same both sides, which was hilarious when turning at intersections and hearing the front tyres fighting it out down there! Dad put 8-ply commercial tyres on it and they never wore out for as long as we had the car.
Yes, the old Hellman rattled and shook over bumps and the engine screamed like a banchee at 100km/h on the highway, but at lower speeds, and especially the auto which clung to top gear like it was its last penny, it just floated along effortlessly and was such fun in an odd way.
We had a yard full of Hunters in the search for an engine that didn't blow clouds of smoke, but sadly, their future value wasn't appreciated and they've all gone for razorblades, except for the 70 auto, which we sold to an older gentleman in a wheelchair who liked that the doors open to 90 degrees and had been looking especially for a Hunter. It appeared in a Western Australian newspaper article under his ownership! The article was about the disappearance of full service petrol stations, as I recall...

Nice Ride! I remember my Grandad owns a 1969 Hillman and I thought it was Toyota when I was younger, My dad restored it given that there are no parts here where I am from it was restored using Toyota parts. How I wish I can own that car again and restomod it I think it was already junked by the person who bought it in the late 90s.

The Hillman Hunter was fairly light, weighing in at about a ton. Even with a basic single Stromberg carburettor, producing 72 bhp from the 1725cc motor, the car was quick off the mark. The Rootes group developed the 1725cc engine, to produce 88bhp in twin Stromberg configuration with an alloy cylinder head, and up to 105 bhp in Holbay tune with the magic of twin side draft webers to give the motor more breath. It is not uncommon for the 1725cc Rootes motor to be tuned to produce up to 160 bhp by post market enthusiast . Bernard Unett completed some magnificent drives . He was not only a racing driver, but an engineer also. This is one of his races in the UK. th-cam.com/video/avCCBALdgpg/w-d-xo.html
