    A little story for you guys. My grandfather in the 70's was a chairman of an important state-run chemistry company in (back then) communist Poland. At one time he went to the UK for a business trip where he bought the beautiful Hunter. When he came back to his homeland it was like driving a Mercedes E Class in a country full of Fiat Pandas. People would always follow it with their eyes on the streets. Unfortunately, he was forced to sell it because of lack of counterparts (at one point the car has broken down) and got a Lada Samara instead. Now he really regrets his decision, and Hillman Hunter still remains in his heart as a brilliant piece of engineering, which brought him a spark of colourful West in boring and grey Eastern European country, which Poland was back then. Now, he's in his late 80s, and had plenty of cars in his life, but he often recalls this vehicle as the best he's ever had. Greetings from Poland!

      Never liked the Hillman Hunter myself..... It's ultimately all down to personal preference, and I personally prefer the Lada to the Hunter.....But as they say, everyone's different.....

    Ah memories. My Mum had one of these back in 1977, I think it was a 1798cc. We got it secondhand off our neighbour. First car I attempted to drive. I was 10 yrs old and I decided to borrow it while my Mum was out. I got as far as across the road and nearly bunny hopped it into some railings. Me and a mate promptly pushed it back to where it started and I never did that again. Lesson learned.

    Let's not forget that this shape of car was not only the Hillman Hunter, there was initially also the Hillman Minx, Singer Gazelle, Singer Vogue and Humber Sceptre, and the Sunbeam Alpine and Rapier were coupe versions.

      Spot on! By chance, a couple of years ago, I met Geoff Caverhill, the author of The Rootes Story, a very good book jndeed albeit a little pricey. I do love the audax and arrows ranges, there is something about them which makes them very distinctive against their contemporaries. It's a shame the Hunter featured here doesn't have period wheels, I feel those alloys don't really suit it.

    I had one of these as my first car. It originally was my granddads and got me through art school. Strapped paintings to the roof and ferried five people on a regular basis. All through two Australian summers with the terrible air conditioning.

    My father used to get these every two years. One even broke down on the way back from picking it up new. As a young lad fanatic about cars my dream was for him to have another car, or at the very least one with a 1725cc engine instead of a 1500cc engine. I learnt to drive in it and was then astounded at how pleasant it was to then drive any other car.

    Nice Hunter. I own a very early one, registered her in the UK in January 1967. I am having to restore mine, although it is exceptional for its age. I am its third owner, and the first owner had it for 45 years. Whoever buys yours will be lucky. If I did not already have mine, I would have bid for yours!

      @caffjohn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Philip Glover Does your one have the earlier all chrome grille and the round headlights? I think the '69 model had the long rectangular headlight for that year only, the 1970 model getting the smaller rectangular "sealed beam" headlight. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I certainly learned a lot about cars lying under that Hunter, fond memories indeed.

    • @Philip2Sierras
      @Philip2Sierras 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      caffjohn My Hunter does have the all chrome grille and the round headlights, as did the 'new' Minx that had the Hunter body. My Dad owned a 'new' Minx and that was the first car that I drove off-road aged 12. I learned to drive on the road in that same car from my 17th birthday. I have always wished that my Dad had never sold it, so now at least I have a Hunter that is virtually identical at first site.

    This car was in production in Iran from 1967 till 2005 with the name of PEYKAN. Every Iranian has a memory with this car. My dad had a 1980 model ( long after seasing production in UK).
    Because of its simple design and basic technology it was the best choice to bring the car manufacturing technology to the country.
    Untill 1985 all the parts were coming from UK when Chrisler the new owner of Talbot seased selling parts to Iran.
    Gradually domestic production percentage reached to 100percent on the last few years before stopping production .

      It had 2 previous owners, the first one had it for about 2 or 3 years and sadly passed away. the last owner, had it for most of the time, and this was used as a sunday car and always been garaged. No wonder its a low milage and in such a good condition.

Later wrote off body and we found a 2nd hand body at a wreckers yard, (hand painted with a brush, red with blue hood) had 100mm padbolts to hold bonnet down (used like "bonnet pins") planed to replace padbolts and repaint car till everyone said it looked cool. Chrysler Australia manufactured these Hillman Hunter variants for about 2-3 years, (1969-1972) as a 4 cylinder sedan and wagon. After that, the 'Galant' was introduced, made by Mitsubishi Motors, and rebadged by Chrysler Australia. I remember the Arrow, (base model, round headlights) the Hunter (standard, a few extra chrome strips), and the Royal (special hubcaps, ornaments (crest on bonnet)). They were popular, and I think much of the design went back to the days of 'Rootes Group' making the Hillman up to the mid-1960's..

    So how do you know what the yellow and red gauge lights indicate?

    • @dj_efk
      @dj_efk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Drake because back in the day the colours were the same for all cars:
      Red: Dynamo / Alternator not charging
      Orange: No / Low oil pressure
      Green: Indicators

    This model was popular in South Africa where they were assembled but it was fitted with a Peugeot engine.

      Peugeot own the copyright to Hillman and so the Hunter (other did have rights to build), but it was the same again but sold by Peugeot.

    We have a family here in Pakistan. They have exactly same car like this which can be restored very easily. It is in a good condition. I wonder how much restored Card like this will be worth today and if we want to restore it where we can get those parts mostly we need small things like interior things and lights and stuff engine can be repaired here very easily and even the suspension

    in the past I've owned 4 Avengers' 1 Hunter' & must say the Hillman Avenger is much better car to drive than the Hunter. The Avenger had rack & pinion steering were the Hunter had steering box & leaf springs on rear, also front door hinge pins suffered from wear & the doors dropped when opened. Hillman did a works Avenger with Hartwell parts - the GT, it replaced the Tiger Avenger, also the Avenger didn't use the Hunter engine as some people think. The Avenger didn't use any parts from the Hunter unlike the Morris Marina from British Leyland ...

    My uncle had one of these in black.
    It was an ex-army vehicle, possibly used for chaufeuring the military brass around in.
    It had a paint chip on the bonnet where the small flag had been placed.
    As far as I remember it was a 'Y' reg, but after a new engine was fitted in the late 1980s or early 1990s it eventually ended up rotting away on his driveway when he got a caravette.
    What a waste of a classic someone could have made use of.

    The Singer models, Gazelle and Vogue, more rare than the Hillman Hunter are more upmarket and have a different fascia. It is the top of the range Humber Sceptre that is most sought after.
