      Awesome! So it's sending enough power to the mic to operate? I've had some reports from folks using iPhones that the Yeti draws too much power, but I think the more recent iPhones and iPads work fine.

      Yes, already loving having everything plugged in at once. And with my powered USB hub (spoiler alert for next video) I can have my interface and MIDI keyboard connected at once while my iPad is charging!

  • @RickSumchin
    @RickSumchin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review. One thing to add: the Camera Connection 3 will also allow you to connect MIDI devices such as my Akai MPK Mini MkII that require more power than the iPad can supply and won’t work with the original adapter. Haven’t tested it but it may well power your audio interface without external power as well. Cheer!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, very cool! Thanks for the additional info. I will definitely need to try out my interface with the adapter, though I have a feeling I have tried it and it needed either external power or a powered USB hub. Thanks again for watching and providing this feedback. Pete.

      Hi Rick do you happened to notice a noise that is quite unnoticeable when using external synth with power supply, connecting the old lightning USB CameraKit via USB A-B (usb A goes to cameraKit & usb B goes to my external synth/workstation keyboard or the Roland FA-06). Thank you Cheers if you encountered this...

    I have a Blair Digital Bagpipe that I’d love to try with the camera adapter. If I can get it working, I could play in harmony with myself! Awesome! Thanks for this video.
    If I use the metronome when recording, could I turn off the sound of the ‘nome on playback?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow?! That sounds super cool. Let me know how it goes. 👍
      (And yes, 100%. It won’t record any of the metronome sound if you have a direct line input).

    Another great vid and tip.....and much needed to extend recording projects! But, alas, it didn't work for me. After several attempts I went to return the USB3 adapter. The sales person recommended that I connect it to an Apple Splitter adapter. Made sense to me but I had even worse results as it caused horrible feedback and noise issues that I could only stop by rebooting and disconnecting the now two new Apple adapters. It then dawned on me that what was probably causing the problem was my DAW. I am using an iRig HD2 which has its own power (phantom?). So I went to my local Guitar Center and found that IK Multimedia recently made available a fix which works very well. The device is called Power Bridge and is made specifically to power an iPad or iPhone with the HD2. I hope this helps with anyone else connecting to their iPad/Garage Band! Thanks again. Absolutely love your tips!

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing this! I don’t own any devices that use the Lightning port for an audio interface so haven’t looked for a solution that works for iRigs and the like. I will definitely note this and pass on this advice when others ask about this in the future.
      Thanks again for watching and passing on this feedback.

    Pete, I just discovered your channel and am finding your videos extremely helpful, thanks! I’m a collaborative pianist who has recently had to dive into the world of recording music at home. I purchased the iRig Midi 2 and am having great success hooking up my midi keyboard directly to my iPhone and using GarageBand to record music. My main issue is that I’m unable to record “silently” since there is no separate headphone jack on my iPhone. Is there a cable that will allow me to connect my iRig to my phone while I simultaneously listen to what’s being recorded on my headphones? I’ve tried Bluetooth headphones but there’s a delay. Thanks again!

      Hey there Holly. So there are a couple of options here.
      You can buy the Apple Lightning Dock as this has a lightning port and a 3.5mm headphone jack for monitoring. Details about this are here, towards the bottom - www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigmidi2/index.php?p=specs
      Or you can use an Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter and the USB cable, and then use either an audio interface or a device like this - th-cam.com/video/MEpidfMLUqI/w-d-xo.html
      Check out this video for how to use an interface - th-cam.com/video/Sc-_LiuqiRA/w-d-xo.html

    Hey, Pete, thanks for all the help on iOS/USB connections for music! I have an off-topic question, though, that is driving me crazy: what USB PRINTERS can be used with the same adapter you're using here? I have the adapter, now I just need to find a USB printer that will accept input from my iPad 6. Every search I have tried always covers AirPrint and Wireles printers and the USB printers they do mention are for Windows and Mac. I can't find a sngle thing (yet) that mentions USB printers that are compatible with iOS 13 devices via a USB connection.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had this question before but unfortunately haven’t used a non-wireless printer for quite a while and rarely print from iOS, so prob sly not the best person to ask sorry.

    Hi Pete, thanks for this video. One thing that never seems to be addressed in videos about this adaptor is audio output, as people seem to use the iPad, which still has a headphone socket. But I need to connect an M-Audio keyboard to my iPhone 7, to control synth apps like Sampletank, for occasional live gigging. My iPhone doesn't have a headphone jack, just the single Lightning port. What isn't clear in this video is whether I can grab the sound output from the iPhone via the adaptor's Lightning port and send it to a PA system or an amp. Can you confirm if it is possible?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ric. Yes, it gets a little complicated and you will need either an audio interface or some sort of audio adapter to get a headphone jack to monitor audio. This video will give you some ideas and links to some of the devices I recommend - th-cam.com/video/uC0xGrJb5NY/w-d-xo.html

      +Pete Johns quick update: After a bit of researching I discovered that the Rode NT's onboard monitoring jack can output to the XLR input via a XLR to 3.5mm cable that can be made from standard parts (and a little soldering) available at Jaycar for less than $15. Sounds perfect and with the UR12's onboard monitoring I'm not left without a monitor. Just thought I'd share if anyone else has a similar setup. :)

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Josel. Yeah, the reason Apple don't promote this as a way to connect anything but a camera for photos and videos is that different devices may or may not be compatible, and some will need more power. You can connect a powered USB hub and then connect via this to get more power to your devices, or as you say, power the device itself separately. Here's a video where I explore the USB hub option - th-cam.com/video/ESmnF7jv92A/w-d-xo.html

    Very interesting. I think I‘ll get the USB 3 camera adapter too. So far I always used the old one for connecting midi keyboards to the ipad. And because I don‘t like adapters I got myself an audio interface which connects directly via lightning cable (Line 6 sonic port).
    Now I wonder if this new adapter can handle the sonic port via lightning and keep the usb port free for whatever. I think no one ever tried, right?

      Hi pete, i just bump on this channel searching something about usb midi noise (sounds kinda like an old video 8 tape being rewinded) when using the older iPad CameraKit with usb A-B to powered hardware synth. Scenario when using USB A-B & the regular USB MIDI Interface like Roland UM-1, well using the UM-1 is fine without noise, but when using the USB A-B type, there is this noise. like plugging in 2 usb device on the PC quite a bit also. Is this kind of power issue? I will buy the new camera kit if this is the solution ... cheers Pete 🎸😉 ✨...
      Only disadvantage for me using the UM-1 is quite bulky on live gig, also when using Soft Drummer app by lumbeat, it changes tempo quite a bit like 1 or 2 when doing fast staccatos...hehe

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. I’ve not ever come across any sort of noise being introduced when using MIDI myself so not 100% sure what to recommend here. The latest Lightning yo USB 3 adapter has worked flawlessly for me with a keyboard and a piano, as well as microphones and audio interfaces, so I can vouch for it on that account.

    Hi Pete, great video. Do you think this lightning to usb 3.0 camera adapter would be suitable for transferring photos and videos from the Bear Grylls video glasses? Is it the glasses that require the power or the iPhone? Would this adapter enable me to plug the usb of the glasses in whilst using a lightning cable to power my iPhone whilst it imports the files? The video glasses are 500mAh. Can te lighting port on the adapter also be used for lightning headphones? If it works on the iPad, i’m sure it’ll work on my iPhone, but my iPhone does not have a separate headphone jack.

      Hi again. So I have asked around and a couple of reliable sources have informed me that the Lightning port on the adapter is for power only. What you could do is use either a USB interface with a headphone jack, or just some USB headphones instead, but unfortunately it looks like plugging the headphones in via this port won’t work.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Tom. Yep, you sure can. The only potential problem is with some audio interfaces that use two channels as they will put the mic audio on the left or right channel, but this can be easily fixed in editing. Thanks for watching and for your question.
