British comedy involves a lot of sarcasm, irony and friendly banter. If one of my British friends makes fun of me then that means we have a good friendship and trust.

It plays on the stereotype of old style publicans being very opinionated, and often insulting to non-British cultures, and also very willing to share those opinions with their customers while they were stuck being served. It meant the persona was quite fitting for this type of comedy material.

"Yank"is a shortened form of "Yankee" - as in New York Yankees. No one is really sure where the word Yankee came from. Some say a British general named James Wolfe used it first in 1758 when he was commanding some New England soldiers. In the UK the word Yankee means American, in America it tends to be the people from the northern States like New England and Vermont. The song "Yankee Doodle Dandy" was originally a British song and is now the State song of Connecticut I believe.

During the Civil War, and even after the war came to an end, Yankee was a term used by Southerners to describe their rivals from the Union, or northern, side of the conflict. "Yank" is still used as a slur in the UK. I lived in England 3 years for what would have been middle school if I'd been in the US. Kids would sometimes call me "Yank" or "You bloody Yank" thinking they were really getting in a juicy verbal jab. I'm not sure they ever understood why it made me laugh every time.
It's just not insulting to us, since we self identify as yanks. Another one that cracked me up was the time a teacher called me a heathen. It's just so far removed from words we associate with insults today that it really tickled me.

He had a sitcom in the early 2000s based in the landlord's fictional pub, it ran for two series(seasons) and involved about seven or so pub regulars and rivalries with other pub landlords. It gave a backstory to this stage persona he's better known for. Once I got into it after a few watches it was one of the best and most underrated sitcoms I've seen. Al Murray's so clever at hiding his subtle intelligence behind a banal setting I think the humor was lost on most people here in the UK plus it was on a crap cable channel which didn't help.

You may not know the origin of the old term Americans used for the British, " Limeys " .... It dates from around the 1820's when American sailors could not understand why Royal Navy ships were shipping supplies of Citrus fruit aboard, to add to Rum rations ! They were mocked for this, until it was proven that the Vitamin C from the fruit had reduced Sailor's deaths from Scurvy, a fatal illness, from nearly 40% pa to less than 2%. Virtually all Navies adopted the practice by 1865, but the name stuck ....

It’s good that you understand chaps. Many of your countrymen don’t. We tend to look at the States as a child that’s done rather well. Also Yanks is a friendly term we use for Americans.

We've always referred to you as Yanks... everyone does. During the war, British girls wore what were called American Knickers - one Yank and they're off 😂 British men used to say that there were 3 things they didn't like about American soldiers based in Britain, they were Overpaid, Oversexed and Over Here... 😂😂 It's all good banter.

yanks or yankees the name originates from a dutch man called jan kees. kees is dutch for cheese. the dutch were the first to settle new york, it was previously new amsterdam before the british took it from them. surely you have heard the song by james cagney " i'm a yankee doodle dandy" the british have called american's yanks for a very long time, the american name for the brits was limeys which came from british mariners who were given limes to stop them getting scurvy on long sea voyages

In English, Septic Tanks, you know the ones that bleat on about "Oh, how do they celebrate Murican Independance in Europe? Nobody cares! You are only one country out of 65 that celebrate their independance from the UK!
The other thing you bang on about is your civil war, your one civil war! We've had three, so get over yourself!
I have a Villa in Spain in a little coastal town, it's small but has three hotels. A Murican woman asked to hire out the Roof Garden on a Friday Night (2014?) and invited guests and locals to join her family for refreshments at her expense.
Apparently, she got very agitated as the evening wore on and asked my English Brother-in-law when the Fireworks were due to start!
He had great fun explaining that they don't celebrate the 4th of July in Spain and there isn't going to be any fireworks!
    They left the next morning!

Great work. Just as a side note I am curious as to why you chaps wear caps indoors. When I am In the field playing cricket I always wear one to protect me from the sun but I can't see how protection is needed indoors. It must also mess with your hair?

Vikings didn't have horns on their helmets, it's a common myth. The horned viking helmet legend was from Scandinavian artists in the 1800s who popularized those portrayals of the nomadic raiders wearing the horned helmets in their equipment.

There's even a WWI song about them - "The Yanks are Coming" (actual title - Over There - George Cohen, 1917).
It says a LOT about these kids that they claim they've never known that, outside the USA, 'yank' = American.
