I love the editing, Mitch. Whoever edits your videos deserves praise. The part when you get up to get a soda and the edit highlights weird shit happening in the game and shows your empty chair is so much fun, and I also was tickled by that mild smattering of applause when you made your P-speed joke near the end.
As far as I know, the reason the shoe changes color is that the NES could only load 3 color palates at a time, which means that the shoe is forced to use one of the available palates.
As the person who found debug mode originally, it is neat to see Kuribo's Shoe properly rendered in stages where it normally isn't when debug mode is active. This is likely why it is taking on unusual colors. Typically the shoe changes to rather odd sprites unless a level happens to have specific enemies (e.g. a Buzzy Beetle and/or a red Spiny.)
This was a surprising comment and a blast from the past! Long-overdue thanks for your site, used to look there all the time! Lord Tom made the romhack I was using, I'm not sure exactly what he modified. I also did an older Boot TAS where I instead got the Boot by simply changing the value of the memory address for being inside it, indeed causing the effect you mentioned. I did find it quite amusing however!
Ive always called a midair jump off a ledge a "Donky Kong" jump because of how you can do it in the DKC games. Seems to be a similar concept here where you bounce off a ledge you are considered airborn but havent jumped, so you get your jump while in that state. The boot is such an interesting mechanic thats only used in a very limited set of levels. I also love the fact that ita color changes so frequently as its being swapped via the pallet changes.
I really enjoyed it, but Mitch pointed out something in the beginning that got me thinking: If you can shoot fireballs from the shoe, you can also throw hammers if you had the suit... And I really wonder how that would look.
These impractical TAS runs are amazing, Tompa's great at these. Honestly, I'd love to see some full on (100% maybe?) TAS runs that are bad in the sense of speedrunning but show a lot of weird and complicated clips and mechanics just to show them off. Kinda like what Tompa did in 7-9 in the frog suit run with the intentional lag frames, but to a bigger extreme and throughout the whole run. I feel like that'd make a great video, Mitch explaining half the stuff and the creator of the TAS explaining the other half in the chat 🤣
Ok that was really awesome! I wanted to do this myself years ago after learning about that game genie "debug" code that could start you with all kinds of stuff like starting in the boot. I love these kinds of speedruns showing things in games you normally don't see!
It kind of reminds me of the roll-jump from the Donkey Kong Country games where if you roll off an edge, your jump is still preserved and you can do a jump in mid-air 😊
During the tank stage where Mitch was making those high pitched "oooow" sounds, in an uncanny coincidence my cat was whining and making those same sounds. XD
Always wondered why the shoe was not made available for more use in original game, perhaps because lots of the levels would be way too easy. Particularly like the bright red variety, looks as if mario is in a xmas stocking. Definitely one of the best and essential TAS experiments 💚
@6:35 I saw a video a few days ago that showed what all could be stomped with the Goomba shoe, and the video showed that the angry sun could in fact be stomped with the Goomba shoe, but it has a VERY small hit box that has to be hit JUST right.
@@SheepStar8 yeah, I found the video I referenced in my original comment, and it is in fact SMB3, but I went back and rewatched it, and the video does NOT show the angry sun being stomped with the Goomba shoe. I think what happened was I somehow got the angry sun and the lotus flower things that are in the underwater levels mixed up in my memory. That was my bad.
This was awesome. & if I remember correctly, the 1-up in 6-3, and the vine in 6-10 is all white, just like the goomba shoe when playing those levels. So if the shoe matches the color of all the Koopa bosses, the 1-ups & vines would probably be that color too. Now I want to put a 1-up in the world 2 boss room just to see a sick looking silver 1-up. Sadly, nobody puts blocks in boss rooms of romhacks because the graphics will not display properly without some advanced level hacking. But the 1-up should look okay in there because it’s a sprite.
I think I only learned the proper name of the shoe because it was present in a fangame, Super Mario Bros X, along with two other shoes. A red one that bounced on lava called “Podoboo’s Shoe” and a blue one that flew called “Lakitu’s Shoe.” Pretty sure that was also how I learned Podoboo’s name too.
So, how many levels are faster with the shoe, than without? If there were a standard shoe item that could be gained, it would be interesting to know how it would be used for runs.
Some of the water levels will be faster, mainly 6-6 and 3-F2. Vertical stages like 7-1 and 7-6, if you compare to a non-clip method, should also be faster. Otherwise you lose a lot of time due to not being able to get P-speed.
11:10 pm: Alrighty. Even though I go into work 90 minutes earlier on Fridays I'll still get a full night's sleep if I got to bed rn. 11:11 pm: [Sees this thumbnail and 38-minute run time] Fuck.
Great video as always Mitch. Tompa ty for trying out the TAS Question: Is it possible to do the same clips you did without TAS? Would there be more lvls you need to skip?
The hardest clips are the block clips used in 8-F and Bowser's Castle, they are indeed quite difficult to do. In BC it's just a timesaver, but you are required to do it in 8-F to be able to beat this category at all. The P-Speed corner clip in like 6-F3 are practically impossible to do RTA, as P-speed is too difficult to acquire.
The 1up Mushroom turns cyan in fortress levels, and so does the Kuribo’s Shoe. Does that mean that they actually share the same palette? That’s kind of interesting since, correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t think there are any 1Ups in 5-3, the only level that the Kuribo’s Shoe is in.
Here's a fun obscure fact: in the french dub of the SMB3 cartoon, they call the goomba shoes "bottes de kuribo" even though goombas are indeed called goombas in french! I don't know it this mistake also exists in the english dub though (Koopatlings' names are correct in the french dub though, they match the games unlike in the english dub)
The SMB3 cart I had growing up was Left Bros, so I thought everyone else calling it something other than Kuribo's Shoe was some Mandela Effect going on.
Thanks again for hosting this, Mitch! And thanks to everyone watching :).

you sold yourself short saying it would be a boring TAS :) it rocked

Don't we all do it normally if we make it to the second shoe goomba without getting hit, every time we play that level?
Keep it as a shoe veneer

How could they just forget about the Goomba shoe in future Mario installments? Who ever designed the enemies love Goombas
It is too powerful to be used ever again

This run is badass. Like you said, this is definitely something I've always wanted to see.
I'm just wondering, do have alts called TriforceOfWisdom_ and TriforceOfPower_ ?
Goomba's shoe has the same mechanic from Rattly (the snake buddy) from DKC2. They can jump after they left walking the edge of a platform.
During the tank stage where Mitch was making those high pitched "oooow" sounds, in an uncanny coincidence my cat was whining and making those same sounds. XD
This whole run is a love letter to my childhood. ❤
just had to 'boot' up this speedrun.... didn't you?
I'm loving all these TAS reaction videos
I so wish the Kuriboot was more than a one-level gimmick, and horribly underrepresented. Tompa did a good thing with this.
Love the TAS videos, really show how great of a game mario three is

Always wondered what it would be like to use the shoe in more levels. Great TAS!
I've seen TAS die before... ...to get hammer in an old warpless run.
Indeed! Back when it wasn't thought of to have them stuck together.

Get the "OUCH!" From the ps1 Grinch game, lmao
When is the Goomba shoe RTA happening?!?
It took me until halfway through to realize the jumps occasionally make a jump sound but normally not. I assume it's related to turn-backs.
I get the jump sound when I jump from the ground, and I only stay on the ground for one frame while moving forward, so it's fairly rare.
I wasn't aware the goomba shoe could defeat the waffle

Just wondering that how long it took to make this! Fantastic video!

The goomba shoe color is dependent on what palette is being accessed by memory. Is it not? Meaning it must change color.
The Goomba Shoe needs to be a useable kart in Mario Kart.
We always just called it "the boot" lol
