  • What does a live sea snail look like? I had asked myself this question many times but now I am fortunate enough to find live sea snails quite a bit on my weekly beach walks.
    The Florida Fighting Conch is a fantastic shell, and even neater critter. It's really amazing to meet these live sea snails and see what they look like and how they move underwater.

    Didn’t think I’d go through an hours long rabbit hole of informative snail videos tonight…the wine hit pretty well, I think.

    Wow! How great to see the snail alive in its shell. Thank you for the video and educating us as to what the Florida fighting conch really looks like.
    I have a question- since this snail eats algae- why is it called a “fighting” conch? I would think that algae eaters would be passive not aggressive. Just a thought :)

    • @swfbeachlifestuff
      @swfbeachlifestuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      All true conchs are vegetarians and don't eat other snails. There is a lot of debate as to why they are called "fighting" conchs. Could be from the shape of the top of its shell looking like a shield, or it could be they can be so feisty and whip their bodies around. No one really knows!

    • @evatripp7788
      @evatripp7788 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it is because the fighting conch often comes out of it 's shell & does exactly what this one in the video did " fights" waves it's body around to tell us humans to put it down & leave it alone. Most other shell animals close up in their shells & wait for humans to put them down thus the Florida " fighting" conch name. It really does take courage to take on giants!!!

    I hear it saying GET OFF MY ROOF!! Love the eyes. What eats them cos I imagine that shell to be quite tough and don't recall you showing one on SWF beachlife that has a drill hole in.

    • @swfbeachlifestuff

      Turtles will eat these guys! I'm always shocked to see broken Florida Fighting Conchs too but there are some creatures with pretty powerful jaws out there!

    Maybe obvious, and I've never really thought about it, but when you find ther shell and it's empty, where has the little critter gone?

    Does it have another "arm" inside the shell to hang on?

    • @swfbeachlifestuff
      @swfbeachlifestuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has a muscle that attaches its body to the shell so that critter will never "come out" but it sure will put on a show!

    Operculum is like a knife? What happens if it gets u? Its poisonous?

    • @swfbeachlifestuff
      @swfbeachlifestuff  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      An operculum is a piece of the animal that closes over the opening in the shell to protect itself. Its like a trap door!

  • @AuntDi2

    Why are they called “fighting conches”?

    • @swfbeachlifestuff
      @swfbeachlifestuff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect because they come out of the shell "swinging"" to get people off 😃

    • @swfbeachlifestuff
      @swfbeachlifestuff  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The animals that are in some cone shells are indeed poisonous but not the critters here in SW Florida.
