I remember this song first sung by B.J. Thomas in 1969. In 1971 Jonathan King recorded his own version of this song & added the famous chant (ooga-chakas). Blue Swede copied that in 1974 & this song is considered their only big hit.
B.J. Thomas released the original version of this song, which was written by Mark James. It was a country pop tune. BLUE SWEDE version is a cover but the one I like the most. Loved it when I had a chance to played it on OLDIES 104 in Buffalo NY.
Wow, Stan! You're reacting to a lot of my favorites today! I loved B J Thomas's version & loved Blue Swede's version & it was in "Guardians of the Galaxy"!😊
I always got a kick out of this song. I remember it well. My freshman year of high school. I don't know anything about the song other than I drove my mom nuts going, "Ooga-Chaka Ooga-Ooga Ooga-Chaka." The poor woman, she would beg me to stop, no luck.

Actually they had another hit, "Never My Love," covering The Association, in the same year. It reached #7 in the U.S. Top 40.

I always dug this also the original by BJ Thomas in 68.
It was in the movie "Reservoir Dogs" long before "Guardians." And what a great soundtrack "Reservoir" had.
