Not only highly talented, but arguably the most beautiful tennis star the professional circuit ever saw. Sad, she ended her career because she was "shy" of addressing the crowd and the press in case she wins....!!
I think the problem was more that she did not win even one of her last 26 tournaments. In her last 4 years (1993-96) she won only the YEC 94 and - early in 95 - a smaller tournament in Sydney. She was a multimillionaire, had a few injuries - and never the fire in her belly you just need to get to the top or win many big titles (stark contrast to her nemesis Steffi Graf!). Still a nice and beautiful player and a central part of the Golden Age. No player beat Graf more often than her (11 times!).
Commentators said that Gaby was almost too talented for her own good. The fact that she could hit every shot in the book and be just as effective at net as the baseline made it perhaps more confusing for her because she had so many options to choose from. Monica ripped every ball while screaming and rarely came in and Steffi ran around every backhand to hit huge forehands, but Gaby sliced, hit heavy topspin and angles and attacked the net while flattening out harder ground strokes sometimes all in one point. One analyst said Gaby hits the most severe slice and the heaviest topspin, no one hits with the same mastery of strokes as she. When she was confident and fired up, she was better than any….
well she was an underachiever and probably exited when she felt she was going to not last too long. But definitely one of the most glamorous players after Sharapova
She had all the shots however she didn't have the one shot that could help her dominating her opponents and drive her game to full greatness. Her footwork was also a bit of a weakness in her game. I was thrilled when she won the US Open against Steffi Graff.
Not underrated. She was lovely to watch (her game was as lovely as she was), but the drive to be a consistent threat to the best players just wasn't there. That serve was literally a high-school level shot, and she was unwilling to put in the work to fix it. Just didn't have the level of commitment. She chose an easier life at 26, and that was the right decision. Much wiser than staying in a business she didn't love.
A very happy belated bday on 16 May twenty days ago Gabby hope you enjoyed your special day and look forward to many many more prosperous years to come best wishes to you lady and family out there in South America xx take care.
The way she played and the way she walked. The shoulders. She wasn't 'girly,' to be sure. Never bothered me, though, watching as a young guy. The male/female expectations were different in those days for a lot of people.
Early, but right on time. She didn't like the work part, never fixed her serve (which was atrocious), disliked losing more than she liked winning, I think. Like for many female players, reaching the top turned out to be a disappointment, as the joy doesn't last and the expectations become crushing but for a very few. The drive to stay at the top requires a level of insanity Gaby didn't have. She made a wise decision.

@@brajeshsingh2391 Sharapova's glamour was the product of clever marketing.
Sabatini was naturally glamorous.

I never understood why many soy boys called Gaby "a bit manly"...

@@charlesfaure1189 But "manly", please.... 😂
Will you marry me gaby?
She's more happier on her own I'm sure!

Premature retirement, nevertheless.
Come back to play tennis gaby

Smokin'
Is she lesbian ?
Yes
Lesbian??
Probably.
Makes me like her even more.
Best part was her wet t-shirt.
Square Jaw, Broad shoulders, adams apple bigger than a fist.
You prefer submissive bimbos, right?
Lesbians love that.
