    MY LETTER TO U2-1987
I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!
    All the Best!
    Gary Lagstrom

Atmosphere looks a tenth of the stadium concerts. Saw U2 at the old Wembley stadium. 1994. Unforgettable.

Sphere is an indoor stadium - capacity of 18,600 and almost all of the seating is on one side of the stadium. It's designed to be a much different concert experience and it overwhelmingly succeeds.

Everyone knows sphere is an indoor stadium....you're missing the point. It's a mindless experience where people are staring with their mouths open for 2 hours at the amazing graphics, while the band plays as almost an after thought. I would be really surprised if more than half of the audience are even familiar with this song. Having seen them in 91, 01, and 04 all at Madison Square Garden, which also only houses 18,000, I wouldn't trade those experiences for this at all. Boring!!!

I worry that we are witnessing the end of the rock n roll era. I can't think of a single *band* from the 2020s. There's no more Led Zeppelin, no more Radiohead, no more Rolling Stones. It's all individual artists: Kendrick, Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Adele, etc. Never mind that none of these artists perform by themselves-they have producers, backup musicians, dancers, etc. But we only know the individual artist's name. It seems very narcissistic to me. A band name suggests a team effort. An individual artist takes all the credit for the army of people who make them who they are.

Although there aren't likely to be too many bands like that in the future there still are some phenomenal bands out there. I'm almost 65 and most of the people of my generation listen only to the classic rock of their youth. I've never stopped searching for new bands and new music. Spoon is one of the most underappreciated bands out there. I believe that there discography over the pat two decades is possibly unmatched. Arcade Fire was a favorite band until the Win Butler problems came out. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit was one of the best shows that I've seen in ages - they've put out some phenomenal music. Frightened Rabbit was great until the untimely death of Scott Hutchison. The National, LCD Soundsystem, My Morning Jacket and Big Thief can't be overlooked either.

On Unforgettable Fire album, some studio time left, story was Bono sang and recorded the song "Elvis in America". The backing drums said to be from another song, same album.

I have heard better cover bands, saw them twice, once in 1981, left early on both occasions. Having said that The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are great albums.

I recall leaving the concerts, in '85 and again in '87 as they were playing this. I wanted to go remembering them playing on-stage they had been so good. Silence and then some other pop tune come out over the speakers would have been too much.
