We have lost nearly all the Irish legends now.. these boys are still with us and this tribute is heartfelt and touching. There will be no more poets from Ireland..
I can't believe people are ripping them over the tribute. Shane had just died the day before, the band isn't even equipped to be able to play a Pogues song, much less do they probably know how to play it. Bono was a fan, a friend, and fellow countryman who, with very little time for prep, wanted to pay tribute to the fallen great. When all that money is spent specifically for you at a venue like the Sphere, knowing he wouldn't be able to attend the funeral because of that (even though he sent a reading to be played), he did his best. It was no MacGowan, but Bono wasn't trying to record the song, it was pure tribute. During that song is about as humble as anyone in the public eye could say they've seen Bono in near on 40 years and he gets flack for it smh. The real injustice was that so few in the crowd knew the song.
@@michelleb3698 they shouldn't have done that song in his honour. That was going to be Nick Cave's tribute. FFS they set that path 30 years ago. When Strummer leading Pogues and Shane was in drunken exile every rainy night in Soho. We need to watch how we look at this re-Bono. Shane respected Bono as fellow Irish man who came from Civil Rights aspects of Irish Freedom. He didn't Irish on Irish attacks in public. But in terms of class, etc he forgave Pope Bono for his sins since 1994. Ireland is one of the most expenisve societies in the world thanks to Billionare Dubliners like U2. Shane wife had to relsease special art book last year just ensure they could afford the care for him. If Bono paid his whack back into Ireland Shane wouldn't have faced that. Both Joe Strummer and Shane Macgowan carried a wedge of their royalities everywhere to help homeless. Bono stash his whack what for? He's sits on mountain of dosh ten times what Band Aid raised.
@@FeckTheBoardIStandWithPalestin I have no doubt that Bono is a piece of crap. But it’s a tribute nonetheless; some at the venue, and TH-cam viewers may not care about the politics. Plus, it can also introduce Shane’s music to others.
@@michelleb3698 wrong tribute for reasons stated. And in terms of how Bono played that it was terrible and doesn't suit his voice. It would have been nice for him to be original. He should have done "streets of Sorrow/Brum 6" and went into "40" or "pride in nanme of love". Bono, Shane; and people like me are connected through Irish Civil Rights. Also, pretty pissed off because what he's doing with Spehere shows is a rip of Zooropa stuff. Which for people like me in 1993. When U2 played Parkhead Celtic Park Glasgow the show our "bapitism and conforimation into the Glasgow Celtic faith". Measures for Folk-Punks is also sonically and political. On those fronts this is Bono reminded us why all that set like Birthday Party, U2 et all parted company in early 1980s!
Bono needs to be careful, he's getting a bit to close to the old rebel music there ,he should announce before it " this is not a rebel song " just in case .
Thank you U2 for this brilliant, delicate, heartfelt tribute to Shane! 🙏🏻♥️ I’ve been a huge fan of both Shane and U2 for a long time, and this really feels like a prayer, in the deepest sense of the word. Thank you, guys! ♥️Rest in glory, dear Shane! ♥️
Very little time to prepare for this but they still did it, if they didn't haters would be whinging that they didn't, bono heralded the pogues in the 80s and he did so in the states as he did with many Irish bands and always spoke highly of shane macgowan, to me bono is a great great man and I don't care what anybody else thinks of him
They've gone and done it! Haven't they?! 😂they've managed to contain bonos massive ego to this sphere😂😂😂😂 mean while in heaven The Irish rover is having a giggle- Mega 🍻 all round for Shane ☘ 💪 🇮🇪 buried today on what would have been Sinead O'connors birthday ♥
I saw them at the Rosemont Horizon (chicago) in 1987. I graduated from HS that year, too. We met them at Rolling Stone Records before the concert!!! What a time to be alive as a teen.
I was actually there, and got my money's worth! I first saw U2 in San Francisco in 82', opening for the J.Gells Band, couldn't believe how far they came!
Heartfelt left turn into Shanes Rainy Night in Soho - I heard echos of previous duets between Shane and Sinead here, U2 must have been feeling both huge losses to Ireland and to Music, and to them personally. Its the Irish story all over, work commitments keeping you from prescious time reconnecting at a loved ones funeral at home in Ireland. Shanes funeral on Sineads birthday, perfect circularity. The crowd sounded mostly Irish - like Vicar St on Acid, would not surprise me if it was mostly Irish - a Vegas break is not unknown to the Irish.
I used to be a huge U2 fan but got sick of Bono’s preaching. So I’m not being biased when I say that I found this touching and think Bono did a decent job. As a ‘plastic Paddy’ this reminds me of home too. ☘️
Ii can assure you that bothered at least 4 of us that knew what it was lol. We even discussed a tribute happening over dinner before the show where one of my friends hadn’t heard the news and was very upset when i told her. She was in tears during this song.
Bono doesn’t deserve to sing Shane’s words. He’s a filthy charlatan through and through. Decades ago he registered U2 in Holland as a Dutch company to avoid paying taxes in Ireland. True Irish son right? Filth.
SHANE WAS A PROUD IRISHMAN MOST OF ALL IN THE TIMES OF THE TROUBLES WHEN THE IRISH WERE TREATED LIKE DIRT IN THE UK. HE STOOD UP FOR EVERYTHING IRISH PITY OUR OF GOVERNT HAD BALLS LIKE SHANE .RIP SHANE
Sorry Bono not in the same league as Shane, yes he's a good singer , but Shane had it all . Nice to see Nice Cave , Johnny D spider etc who showed up for the funeral . Shane will always be the heart of the people and showed how irish he was and will be forever remembered as Irish . RiP shane you music and talent and generosity was magical ❤
They sound dreadful! No energy, and that awkward switch to Rainy Night in Soho...the band were still playing the first song. Bono is all over the place. I'd want my money back
@Lukewatts85 i can’t disagree strongly enough. The whole concert was amazing with Bono and the band on fire all night. This came during a 4 song “acoustic” set in the middle of the concert and while video may not portray the emotions in the crowd, i can assure you there was plenty.
Pope Bono should have left that song alone; and allowed Nick Cave's truly heartbroken version from Shane's farewell to stand on his own. Nevermind the Neolibral Capitalist Gangster Showman in Nevada Desert, instead take yerself back listen to the 40th annie versh of "Under Blood Red Sky Live Album." The world closed their eyes; and could hear Shane chuckle from his coffin when they played Bono's message. "Bono can't be here today, for his friend," because it would breach his billion dollar contract. A lot of people seem to miss the political intent of "Fairtytale of New York" was a feck you anthem to that "Band Aid Bollox"......
God damn this dude is a legend for singing? Time to redefine legend. Bono. Sings like my drunk uncle live.on another note. Please give me the name and number of the studio God producing this average potato
