MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom
I woke up at 6am to see whether they ended with 40 and if anyone captured it. You are a f’n legend my friend. 🙏Thank you so much for getting this on video. 🙌
As far as I can tell this is the only song where Adam and Edge switch instruments. Edge on bass. Adam on guitar. I’ve been a fan of the band since 1983 and I didn’t notice it until I was watching back the Vertigo concert DVD from Chicago.
When they recorded the song, they had about an hour left of studio time, and they didn't want to waste it. Adam had already left, which is why Edge wrote and played the bass part. That's why they've always switched instruments performing it live.
@DJ_FLUX Thats interesting. I knew about running out of studio time and that they basically wrote the song in like 45 minutes. But I didn’t know Adam leaving is what led to Edge playing bass. Its not a big deal or anything, but considering its a relatively simple bass track you’d think after 40 years Adam would be able to cover it without switching instruments.
I was NOT going to miss the Final Show...this song was chilling and I will take the memories of this show to my grave. I get chills every time I watch "40" at this show. Yes I cried like a baby....you had to be there.
We were there on the Adam side, what an amazing night. Love the way Bram shakes his head at Edge around 5:30....."no fricking way am I playing you off stage."
Thank you lovely video !! Beautiful done !!! I see the emotion on Brams face made me feel very emotional 🥹….. A dream of a teenager became real .. dream out loud people !
“40” a song ending concerts during Unforgettable Fire tour and Joshua Tree tour. Walking back to car singing “How Long to sing this song” with the almighty U2 fans. after show, both tours. Adam and The Edge switch guitars for song. You see that !!
Remember when I visited a concert in a stadium in Rotterdam in 1987, we went to the central station after the concert. While waiting for our connection every platform was singing: ‘ how long…..’. Magical.
Hats off to the OG fan for manifesting this performance. This 80's U2 fan thanks you sir. I walked out of the Meadowlands Arena in '85 & '87 singing this song all the way to the parking lot. Ah the memories.
WATCH THE EDGE TRIP OFF THE STAGE @ .33 seconds. OTHER THAN THAT. OUTSTANDING CONCERT. IT WOULD BE AMAZING TO HAVE U2 DO A FREE CONCERT TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT "HUMAN TRAFFICKING" HOW ABOUT IT, U2?? WILL YOU DO IT? OR IF YOU CHARGE FOR TICKETS, HAVE THE PROCEEDS GO TO ORGANAZATIONS THE FIGHT HUMAN TRAFFICKING. GOD BLESS YOU ALL. LOVE, UNITY, & ✌️ PEACE
I can’t stop watching this! Thank you for capturing this beautiful moment. Especially through to the end with the chanting. I was in front of you last night. It was epic.
Incredible! Thanks for sharing. Brings back flood of memories of being at RFK Stadium, DC 1987, Bono dislocated his shoulder, it was raining, and the mob exiting kept singing this, never stopping, shoving into the Metro entrance, etc, epic.
Enjoyed the shows I went at sphere all of them special ! What an experience … still feel the emotions .. the energy of everyone in there something can’t be explained in words but must be experienced 😃
Beautiful, thanks. I remember leaving MSG 4/1/85 and everyone going down the escalators still singing this, and those queues take forever at MSG, then spilling out onto 7th Ave. and still, “ how loooong, to sing this song!” It was magic, something I’ll always remember.
I went to the first 2 shows and 2 shows on Super Bowl weekend. It was an unbelievable experience. To be there on the 40th and last show would have been amazing. Thanks for sharing.
THANK YOU. What a beautiful video! I feel emotional watching this… it must have been insane to actually be there. The added colours are so beautiful as well.
It's great to see an artist doing a REAL encore (because 99% of the 'encores' are planned from the beginning) I go to a lot of concerts and have only seen that 4 times so far: Springsteen did 'Jersey Girl' in Vienna 2009, because a girl wore a shirt with that song name on it The other 3 were famous German bands: Hosen, Onkelz, Ärzte
Perfect spot, perfect shooting (you must be a pro, right?) amazing quality of sound and video, for a perfect end of a perfect show. Thank you FLUX for this.video!
Lol, i think Edge was looking at Bram like, you wanna end the show? Brams laughing it off and didn't go for it. Humble of course, he is not much of a foreground typei guess, i mean he is a drummer after all. You did good man, would have been nice tho.
When they recorded 40, Adam had already left the studio, so Edge wrote the bassline. As such, they have always switched guitars when playing it live, going back to the War tour.
Give an oscar to the man filming this video, you won
Hahaha too bad my singing voice is terrible! 😂
@@DJ_FLUX We forgive you.
This song is now like 40 years old. it has aged well.

Same. I know. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. October 22, 1987. Nosebleed seat. Total magic nonetheless.

Same here
So happy to hear that! Love sharing the love! ❤
Their Cathedral. Other people will just be using it. They will be regulars there.
Perfect ending for them and fans!! Wishe I was there!!!!
The perfect end to the Sphere shows
Best U2 Live version 🎉 Bram rocks!

@alexandriaocasio-smollett5078 of course he can play it. It's just become a tradition over 40 years of doing it that way. And the fans love it.
Fox Theatre, Detroit, MI 1985. Everyone in the lobby singing this. I get chills up and down my spine just thinking about it.
Wow. We used to sing that one all the back to the parking lot in Massachusetts back in the 80s.
Nice! ❤
I also sang this in the parking lot in Massachusetts! Worcester, Foxboro, The Garden………
All the way back to my room at U of I in Champaign.
Thank you sir for making every pre-Joshua Tree U2 fan extremely happy!!
Thrilled to share the joy!

@TurboJimbo - Didn’t they always switch guitar & bass when they did this song?
@@cirenosnor5768 Yes 👍
I saw them perform 40 on the Vertigo Tour in Denver. It was Awesome!
Yes Adam on guitar with Edge on bass common for "40"

The could only be one song to end this concert. The song that ended all concerts from the start.
Beautiful. Show #40. Our was show #12…the “Gaga show.” Experience I will never forget and so glad that I had one there.

I was in section 105, row 7!! Amazing night, my second show! U2 is amazing,
Like you say at the end - you fucking did it! Too bad they didn't end any more concerts in the Sphere with it.

Magical ending to a show! Edge on bass and Adam with guitar? And, of course, the crowd sings them off. I'm sure that was everything to U2. 😊😊😊😊😊

Brilliant well done guys.
That was so cool!
Excellent work - many thanks. I was front row but in Section 310. Nevertheless, this song felt really good up there, as well.

0:33 The Edge and the edges... 😂😂
Adam and Edge switched instruments?? 😃 I never knew Adam could play guitar. Or did they always switch for this song? I cannot remember. 🙃
When they recorded 40, Adam had already left the studio, so Edge wrote the bassline. As such, they have always switched guitars when playing it live, going back to the War tour.
You were really close to me! ✌
🖤🔥🖤
If u know u know 😉
Bram looked like he'd been crying :(
I'm sure it was very emotional and overwhelming for him.
Does anyone know what Bono said?
40 days and 40 nights in the desert. What's a fellow with a messianic complex to do?
Seamos amigos?
So who sat in on drums?
Bram van der Berg. Larry's choice.
Larry has asked Bram exclusively to temporarily replace him. Bram did a very great job just the way Larry wanted to see and hear.
@@DJ_FLUX It was a very good choice from Larry.
Great vibe but it still misses Mullen involvement was always kind of his thing
🥹
Sacrilege without Larry Mullen Jr
@@FrankNardulli not really. Larry is the one who chose Bram to fill in for him.
@@DJ_FLUX yeah sure if that helps you sleep at night
I don't know what that's supposed to mean.@@FrankNardulli
Def. different without Larry, but still a great way to end a concert
