This is the song that separates the true U2 fans from the newbie’s and Las Vegas Lookie loos. The true U2 fans keep singing, while the others cheer thinking the song is over, when the truth is the song is now… yours to sing.
What a very great drummer is Bram. Larry has asked Bram exclusively to temporarily replace him. Bram did a very great job, just the way Larry wanted to see and hear.
My first U2 concert I ever went to I was totally blown away by the use of 40 to end the concert. It was such a moving experience to hear everyone sing it even as we left the building. People either sang the song or were walking silently. When a rock band and it’s music so emotionally impacts it’s fans and listeners they have truly transcended music
You could hear the cheer when Dallas Schoo handed Adam the electric... the die hard fans that go back decades knew what was coming... no one else had a clue... and that's OK! Everyone gets to enjoy this legendary band!!
I agree. the Red Rocks album. The Unforgettable Fire tour, Dublin June '85, a great concert and a great version of this as it all wound down; great. Another two years, Dublin, June '87, Croke Park, Dublin, they came home, number one America that spring, what a gig and this same tune, as us folk listened..... only great.
PART 2 WIDE AWAKE IN DUBLIN TV SPECIAL FROM THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE TOUR 1985 ENHANCED....... type this into You Tube, go to 19 minutes and you get a great feel of the atmosphere as "40" is played. I was there, what a gig. I counted down the weeks, the days, the hours, Live Aid was only three weeks away, I knew they were going to carry it off - they did.
This night was our second time at the Sphere to see U2 and it was a truly spectacular concert. Unfortunately the venue is so amazing no online video does the concert justice.
I saw them at the Sphere on December 8th. My wife is the huge fan, seeing them at the Sun Bowl decades ago. I’m a passive fan, meaning I’ve liked the music but never went out of my way to see them. I am now a huge U2 fan. The Sphere is an incredible venue, but U2 made it an unfiorgetable experience. I’m almost 57, and seen many shows, but this is up there.
I remember them playing in the Dandelion market in Dublin in the late 70’s. An absolute kip, but even in my mid teens I knew this was different, how, I didn’t know, but very different from everything else around at that time!
There's something so special about "40" live and closing the show. The first time I experienced "40" was in 1987 at the Omni in Atlanta. To be one with everyone else singing it with all our hearts and continuing to sing it as we left the building out into the parking lot is an experience that you gotta have in order to truly understand it's power and the power of U2. Definitely a high point in my life. "40" will always be very special to me because of that. Thank you for sharing this and thank you U2.
My first show was in May of 83’ at The Tower Theatre Upper Darby PA, I was 17 , they closed the show with 40 and 90% of the crowd sang it all the way back to our vehicles 🎶
June 1985, and again, in June 1987, Dublin's Croke Park, two just great gigs and us leaving this song echoing in our ears..... look up an RTE documentary, "Wide awake in America", it filmed this song being sung and foursome leaving the stage. I was down in that crowd, what a concert! !985, jayney that's coming up on 40 years ago.......
I will never forget this last song until the day I day. Die hard fans KNOW…It was so emotional. The perfect end to a perfect night and an amazing residency. The two shows I saw changed me forever. Thank you, boys 🫶🏼
I saw them close the Anaheim show in 2005 with 40. It was the show immediately before a gravely ill John Paul II passed and the band had been paying tribute to the Holy Father all evening. Tears when they closed with this. And then disbelief and disheartenment when the bandwagon, fair-weather,, let's be seen at the show "fans" actually booed when they realized U2 would not be returning to the stage.
Me too, I saw the ‘Unforgettable Fire’ tour in 85 and then ‘The Joshua Tree’ in 87. I’ve never forgotten those two gigs, probably the best I have ever been to.
Loved this when it first came out. It always carried a lot of emotion because of its simple refrain. Wish I could have been at one of these concerts….but grateful for those who filmed them. Cheers from New Zealand. 🐑🐑🇳🇿🇳🇿
Bram van den Berg is a Dutch rock musician who is the drummer of the band Krezip. He served as the live drummer of Irish rock band U2 during their Las Vegas concert residency U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere from 2023 to 2024, filling in for Larry Mullen Jr., who was recovering from surgery..
First time to see them was at the US Festival with 250,000 good friends. Was America’s introduction to this incredible band. 4 more shows since then. All moving and beautiful experiences.
My brother took me to this show. When we went to th Joshua Tree tour show in Lexington, 1987, they closed with With or Without you instead of 40. It made me so happy that they closed with this for their last show at Sphere. ❤❤❤ Such a great show.
Incredible last performance of U2 at the Sphere, what a wild ride! Was there the end of Sept for the second show and again for the last showing, magnificent! Would love be on the floor so close to the band but the standing for hours would kill my feet & back.
saw them the first time in philly and they closed with 40 and the entire crowd sang 40 all the way out through the corridor into the parking lot. totally amazing. seen then 6 times in total!
I can't think of another band that makes it feel like you're at a church for mankind, not a church for one religion or another but a church of life on earth.
great! was there a story that on Unforgettable Fire LP Bono used up studio time, there was some left, and recorded that song about Elvis. The drumming or backing music supposed to be the same as 'A sort of Homecoming'.
They did not play this song for the October show that I saw, but the fans saying it in the hallway back to the hotel. One of the most incredible sites in the sounds I’ve ever been a part of.
While I think Achtung Baby is there best album ever, this song can bring a tear to me eyes. I've seen them 5 times but I really feel like I've missed out ion something special by not making it to a Sphere show.
I, like you have been a fan for decades and have seen U2 live now 6 times. I was at first skeptical about Bram drumming with the band and was not sure about going to see the show. Paolo, we’re you at this? I was dead center on the floor…I feel like I can pick myself out in that closing shot, singing until my vocal chords completely gave out, and singing some more. I recorded the whole thing from where I stood, but I was very much in the moment. Thank you for posting this (MUCH higher quality than my footage. Lol).
Not bad. I prefer the last of the rockstars edit but this is nice too. I notice there’s always a softness to your edits. Is that a filter you put on? And if so, why?
The only song that I am aware of where Edge and Adam switch instruments. Adam on guitar. Edge on bass. I’ve been a U2 fan for 40 years. But I only noticed it 2 years ago watching Yahweh/40 closing out the Vertigo tour Chicago DVD. I thought I was seeing things at first.
Yep! Adam wasn’t in the studio when they recorded “40”. So Edge played both bass and guitar then. And because of that Edge and Adam always switch instruments when they play “40” live.
My first U2 concert was 40 years ago. Thrilled to have been at their 40th Sphere show and cried my eyes out that they ended with 40. Epic. 💚
Lucky you. I was a week too early. This was the only way they could finish this residency
I hope you get the help you need
First U2 is just love in blindness and an acrobat i love this so g really
U2 sphere pas écologique désolée mais magnifique 😊❤
September 23, 1984, Entertainment Center, Perth WA. And of course "40" was the final song.
I saw U2 at Wembley Stadium in '87 and when the audience left at the end of the night they were still singing this on the subway on the way home.
Andy, Dublin, '85 and Dublin '87 I left with this song in my ears, memorys of two great concerts.
Same, but in US… miles from the stadium
Paris 85 was the same
@@itsmrfish1 great.
1987 Orange Bowl , Miami FL … Same wonderful thing , as we walked the exit ramps , we were all singing … 50 times better and more exiting than this …

How long… ❤
Wow. So divisive, you must be a leftist.
@@bostonmattBono? I’d say 2 inch’s. That why they are called U2.
Yep
Wow, went in February- wished I would have made it this night. Holy smokes
What a very great drummer is Bram. Larry has asked Bram exclusively to temporarily replace him. Bram did a very great job, just the way Larry wanted to see and hear.
I think they need to replace Paul... He obviously can't sing anymore - as sad as that is... 😢.. He's just talking now.
And class how he doesn't end 40 on his own, I think it shows respect to it not being "his place" to do that the way Larry used to do it, top bloke.
The moment the crowd realizes they're playing 40 is just beautiful
It is beautiful because Adam is grabbing the guitar and not the bass. A true U2 fan knows The Edge and Adam always swap instruments for this song
@sigmundfreud8976 yes, you are correct! They played 40 in Toronto 2005...I was there. They swaped instruments
Actually the crowd were singing it before the band even did. Lol. 😂😂😂
@@sigmundfreud8976any reason behind why they switch instruments? New fan here, just playing catchup.
@@RowenMyBoat lil late to the party but edge wrote the bassline for this song so that might be why. I'm not 100% positive though.

This night was our second time at the Sphere to see U2 and it was a truly spectacular concert. Unfortunately the venue is so amazing no online video does the concert justice.
The best it can do is bring back hints of the sensation for those who were there…which can mean a lot when that’s what we’ve got!
The best u2 closer. I’m glad they saved it for the final. I have been waiting for it

U2 still carries “The Unforgettable Fire”!!!
That was the achtung baby tour , the first major concert of the 90s at the sun bowl
I remember them playing in the Dandelion market in Dublin in the late 70’s. An absolute kip, but even in my mid teens I knew this was different, how, I didn’t know, but very different from everything else around at that time!
Max, RTE 2, summer of '79 on Dave Fanning's late night prog, I heard something, and I'm still listening to Paul and the Dub fab four.

Thank you for filming this last song on the last night of the show! Beautiful!
This is/was, the U2 I'll always know and love!!!👍👍💪💪☘️😎✌️
We were walking out and still singing 40 in the parking lot at JFK in Philadelphia back during Joshua Tree tour in 1986. It was surreal.
Us too in Tempe Arizona at Sun Devil Stadium, same tour. Beautiful moment for all.

My friend and I sang our hearts out with this song back in 1983 at the U2 show for Rockpalast in Germany!
Ya, was there in Brighton in 1983 doing the same
I was fortunate to see their Joshua's Tree tour in 87. It was awesome. My 3 favorite all time groups, U2, Led Zeppelin and Santana.

In 1987 in Rotterdam this was the unbelievable experience! The crowd singing this song still when the lights went out!
The extreme happiness in the moment when the drummer Bram smiles, with his whole being, is priceless, and Uncle Bono obviously doesnt like it anymore
All GOOD things come to an end -- sadly some are harder to take than others U2 - I want to thank you - you will always live on with me xxxxxxxx
Ever since New Year’s Day was released I have made it the first song I listen to every New Year’s Day without fail. So that’s quite a run. 😉
I remember coming out of a show in the early 80s, we all were singing it from the exits back to our cars. It was a next level experience for me.
Seeing Dallas hand the guitar to Adam tells the story of 40, an endearing finisher gifted to the fans of U2.

Never knew they called the song 40 because it was written in 40 minutes. I have listened to it at least 40 times and I never knew that.
Psalm 40 in the bible
Psalm 40 in the bible was the inspiration
The lyrics are based on the first verses and last verse of Psalm 40
As Bono once said (bootleg Tear Down the Walls) from early 90’s, the 40 minutes has nothing to do with why this song is called “40”
Beautifully edited video! Thank you!
The only group whose songs I like
Good luck, I love you
