2018 TT Practice (May 30)The view from Ballaugh

  • What began as a perfect day for practice and qualifying for the annual Isle of Man TT motorcycle road race, ended in tragedy with the death of rider Dan Kneen. On this first lap you can feel the fan's anticipation turn to excitement as Dan led the pack over Ballaugh Bridge jump, engines wailing as they speed out of town. Within minutes and without warning, practice stopped and all went quiet. Riders were signalled to pull up wherever they were. All over the 37.7 mile course quiet fell. Everyone knew something bad had happened and we waited for some news-- hoping it was just a minor incident. It was much later before we learned the worst thing that could happen did, and it was Dan that had been killed. I'm posting this video as a tribute to Dan Kneen and a record of his final moments on this earth. In life he brought happiness to many. In death, I'm sure he made many reflect. We all only have one lifetime-- live it and do it. R.I.P. Dan Kneen.

Thanks Eric for posting this video, it brought tears to my eyes. In 1983, right where this camera is sitting is where me and my mate Bob Stevens lay on the tarmac with our heads resting on our helmets and our feet close to the track, each holding a pint of Guinness in hand watching the race unfold on the Saturday. We had a fantastic week and loved the TT so much. Sadly my mate Bob was killed while riding his bike to work a few days after returning from the island that year. I still miss him even though the years have passed and I am now 60. Stay safe people, never relax about your safety, and never take life too seriously because you don't know when it's going to end.

Heartfelt thanks to you Eric - for a respectful and moving piece. It encapsulates the extremes of this sport that many of us love so dearly. One moment Dan was leading the pack & riding at the very peak of his powers; and a couple of minutes later that deafening silence we all dread cloaks this beautiful - yet terrible - evening. Continue to rest peacefully Dan. Your short time on this Earth helped enrich many of our lives.

I knew Dan, I am friends with all the Family and have been for a long time. That Friday I had just arrived on the Island, I picked up my usual van from the hire shop, then did some essential shopping and headed up towards Ramsey, the practice session was about to begin, so I decided to watch from Ballacry Road, I took a can of cider with me to the corner, there was a very young Marshal on his own with radio and flags, having always marshaled for a number of years I got chatting and said it seemed odd him being alone. Manx radio announced the first riders were away and I began the countdown in minutes to where I was, about 10 mins I imagined when they came past in a flash of colour, I thought I was sure it was Dan in front of a pack of around 5 riders, it was less than 2 minutes later when the young marshal stuck out a red flag, I asked what's happened, he said red flag full course. It was silent as I walked to the van, I got in and headed for Ramsey, it said on the radio that due to a fire near the course it had to be red-flagged, I thought straight away that was nonsense, then suddenly the horrors hit me...DAN, please God no I kept saying, when the message came over from Manx radio the presenter was actually in tears, and so was I. RIP Lad you gave everything you had, you are very much missed.

I'm sure Dan was like Rodney he was something special to see in action and a all around stand up guy.Im sure the two are still doing what they loved doing the most only in a different place RIP DAN N RODNEY you will be missed but not forgotten......still run rodneys grand national flattrack #92 on my bike in respect.

Watching a fail in any sport can be massively beneficial to other participants. It may not be the nicest thing to watch but I can help.
Wanting to watch the crash isn't sick. If the crash was the fault of rider error then you can take steps to avoid such a thing. Not taking necessary precautions could lead to death and the crash video would be a good example.
As for his family, whilst my thoughts are with them, they need to accept or at least understand why crash footage is beneficial and needs to be seen.
If I died due a fault of mine and not my equipment (in this case a bike) I would want every possible angle recorded and uploaded to try help others avoid such an accident happening again.

R.I.P my man.You ARE the Isle of Man!There is nothing even close to like it in all of sports.I'm gonna shoot for Isle of Man 2019.Its doable.
As a spectator of course.I'm not good enough to be out there. That wouldn't be racing. That would be Russian roulette. Then it would be a gambling event....When is Jim going to die?It would be a sure thing with me.Like putting an adolescent girl in a Ford GT.

Out of curiosity. Personally I have a slight feeling inside that wants me to see the crash but at the same time i know for me it would be fairly traumatic as you're essentially witnessing someone dying and i loved Dan at the TT. Also, it's mainly a respect thing, for Dan himself and his friends/family as they shouldn't have to be reminded of such a tragic event and have it plastered all over social media sites. It's unjust and not right and therefore id be inclined to agree with you.

Eric Thompson, you may wish to read my description to this video again. What is shown, in real time, is Dan Kneen passing over the bridge (first rider to do so) and disappear out of sight, his fatal accident just a few moments away. Everyone, in that instant that the race was stopped, knew something bad had happened and hoped for the best. The sudden silence was deafening. It may sound strange, but this video kind of made itself-- I just put the pieces together and posted it. Looking at the result, I see quite a bit of symbolism. I'm not religious, but and the way it went together that night, makes me wonder if I was doing the work of some greater God. All I know for sure, this was the last time I would ever see Dan alive, and to his memory this video is dedicated. R.I.P.

dont like the fact your thumbnail is a tribute to dan and then you just show footage from ballaugh. . cant help but notice your other vids have a very few views and the one you thumbnailed with dan's tribute gets 145k and counting!! hope im not being cynical here, just im from the iom and met dan a few times, so excuse me if im being a bit over the top..

When I pieced together this video of Dan leading the group over Ballaugh Bridge with footage from a second camera, I found the story it told profoundly affected me. I know it's not a classic tribute video, but it captures a moment in time and I hope it makes people think and remember Dan doing what he loved. This is what I had to give as a tribute, and I think the number of views really reflects an amazing love for Dan.

Isn't the whole course over 30 miles? So why does everyone have to pull up and stop, no matter where they are, when a rider dies? Surely they could clear the track quickly and let it continue? All IOM TT racers understand and accept that it's extremely dangerous and that death and serious injury are consequently inevitable for many. But they''re there to race, not to waste time in compulsory mourning.

    • @ericzinter9535
      @ericzinter9535  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

ushoys, if an accident results in debris on the course that poses an unacceptable increase in risk to the competing riders, the Marshals (who maintain the course), the spectators or the officials that investigate every fatal accident, the decision may be made to red flag and stop the race. In the case. of James Hillier this year when he broke his engine and dumped oil at Barragarrow, the race went on with caution flags warning of reduced traction at this very dangerous turn. Rookie Adam Lyon went off the course and lost his life, but the course was not affected and racing was not interrupted. "Compulsory mourning" is not dictated, mandatory or enforced.

37 something miles. If theres an ambulance/medics on the track then i would guess having the rest of the riders flying past would probably have the potential to cause more accidents. And anyway just out of respect i would pull up, you never know what the best course of action would be to get a crashed rider to treatment - i would him/her to have the best chance so wouldnt want to be on the course.
      Hope youre good.

Very sad the TT is very dangerous, you would think in these modern times it would be banned and run on a safer track

james goodwin its just human nature we as species love death and the excitement of crashes that is why nobody shows up to watch a gentle 30 mph ride around the isle its mankinds brainwashing to be the fastest, the best, the victory.

james goodwin, The TT is the Mount Everest of motorcycle road racing. Climbing Everest is dangerous and many have lost their lives attempting to summit. But there is no talk of changing the mountain to make it safer. With risk comes "reward"-- that is human nature. There needs to be a Mount Everest. There needs to be a TT. R.I.P. Dan Kneen.

Its sad when someone dies of course it is but I feel so sorry for his wife and family. How selfish can someone be to put their own selfish adrenaline rush before their own family. When you have a wife and kids it's you're job to be there for them. These riders are not clever or hero's they are cowards. They put their own fun before their families . That's really really low.

If people don't want it it would end itself,I am all against compulsion. The riders and spectators know the risks, and are willing to take them, most returning to the skirt even after an horrific crash, that is your proof that the competitors want to ride in it,I believe one rider still competes in similar races with an artificial leg specially designed for the job, you couldn't pay me enough to even compete, but that's just me, its called free choice
