  • How many journalists does it take to discuss the Skoda Octavia wagon? While in Germany for our Pilgrimage trip, we filmed the first ever review with real-time thoughts from Paul, Todd, and Tom! Join us for a blast down the autobahn and backroads in an actual people's car - without the Volkswagen badge.
    We also discuss the updated version of this car, the 2017 Skoda Octavia 245 RS.

    Actually, to be precise, Škoda Octavia VRS is not a Golf GTI. True, both cats share MQB platform (Modularer Querbaukasten), but then, here comes the best part: this platform allows dimensions stretching, which Škoda used quite well: wheelbase ( +43mm), length (+430mm), width (+15mm), boot space (+210 lit.) One of reasons why you can sit properly on the back seat of Octavia.

    Affordability. Not everyone wants a track wagon, just a "fast one". And Cupra ST's, Golf R wagon's and Audi's are pricey, wheres this can give you the same thrill on everyday drive and trips for a better price. It's a better bang for the buck, and that's why you see these everywhere and no Cupra's at all in the ST version, and some for the R's.

    Great review fellas. Had my vrs mk3 dsg estate since new. Despite a leaky sunroof (fixed under warranty + £compensation) its a great load lugger and towing family car. Sensible, economical (av 35mpg) but still puts smile on face on commute.

    I'll be tuning into some more body-rolly driver reviews!!! haha!! great stuff guys! I love the fact there are a large number of affordable cars being reviewed. I'd like some used reviews ( ie MB/MC mondeo tdi, or 1Z gen skoda RS used buyer review, if it is possible)

    Actually, from a german point of view, it's quite simple to to see where the Octavia RS fits. It's a practical family estate car with that extra horsepower to be more comfortable on longish Autbahn cruises. I don't think anyone is actually buying this for a sporty drivers experience, it's just like an affordable fast Audi or Merc, go fast, go in comfort.
    Don't know what anyone outside of Germany wants this for, though...

      @saladspinner3200 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the Belgian car market is comparible to that of Germany so they're sold for the same reasons over here. Add to that the fact that 55% of all new sales are leased Company Cars, almost all those sales are within the upper-mid end of the market, are drop within the German range of available models.

    I love this kind of reviews on European cars!
    Now you US guys finally get to see what you're missing over there.
    I know 2 friends who got this accepted as their lease, with just a small premium (around € 50/ month) over the 2.0 tdi.
    By the way, the SSHKODA VRS also comes with a 2.0 tdi with around 200 hp, this is even more popular in Europe.

    This is my next car, I currently own a '13 Rapid. My reason for wanting a VRS Wagon? I have 2 small kids. I carry alot of kit I take with me as I work all over Europe and Scandanavia.I also currently own a '04 Mazda RX-8 231. This is the car I use when I fly home and my Skoda is in Gothenburg, Munich, Barcelona or where ever. I plan to replace the RX8 with either a SAAB 9-3 Convertable or a Mercedes CLS 320cdi. The RX8 is a bit sideways for the wet roads in the U.K for carrying my Wife and Kids in when I'm there.Great car though. As for the vRS have some fun but still capable of hauling my crap across Europe but chuck it around some awesome roads I encounter. Then just mooch around when I get home. As for the SEAT, neh not my cup of tea even though its basicly the same car. I would never be seen driving an Audi, I don't want to look like a sales rep. Besides Audis and their drivers have a reputation I dont want to be part off. The thing about the Skoda is I save money by not having an Audi and I can customize the Skoda to suit my requirements, uprated brakes firstly then a ecu remap, maybe some ipad holders for the Kids in the rear with cordless headphones and thats all it needs. I don't mind a softer ride as some roads I encounter are pretty bad. Especially in the UK. A set of Winter tyres is a must though.

      I upgraded my Octavia RS hatch, APR engine tune 195kw/350Nm, stiffer rear sway bar, single mass clutch, some new wheels with semi slicks, upgraded front brake rotors and pads. Now both family hauler and track day car that's Golf GTI quick. I don't miss my SUV at all. It's now 10 years old, so will will replace with another RS, go Skoda.

    Worth knowing ref comparing VW / Seat / Škoda - Seat and Škoda often better spec with options for same price or cheaper, Seat more sporty, Škoda softer suspension setup to accommodate poor quality of local roads in Eastern Europe. Works well in France as well which has a lot of potholes once you get off the toll highways but there it is competing with soft setup French makes.

    This is my next car, but I won't be opting for the full leather seats. I prefer the stock and the alcantara options. Just don't like leather.
    I'm a estate (wagon) fan, also a fan of not being bored to death. Also a fan of cash, so this at £27k covers all the boxes. All the dealers locally sell off their vrs test cars, for £20k 6 months old. Good deal.

    Only thing keeping me from buying a Golf Sport Wagen is the fact that it's stuck with the 1.8TSI and not the GTI engine that this Skoda has. Once again Europe gets the best stuff!

    Skoda cars and beer (in that order, I believe) are the main Czech exports - that we make competitive cars is a very big deal for our country. Some 25y ago we were making really bad cars. Go SKODA.

    You guys should have driven the previous gen Skodas, those had decent trims and fit and finish. This gen they had poorer materials to make sure it would not feel more prestigious than the VW. Even the rear exhaust tips are fake ffs.

      His pronunciation on 0:26 is actually almost exactly on the money. This is how the name should be pronounced. The fact that everybody agreed to say [skoda] instead of [shkoda] (which is the correct one) is another matter. Czechoslovakia was a sad one, agreed on that.

    They go and make it look really aggressive and 'sporty' so you'd think it would have some power.. but it doesn't, 230bhp in that car is nothing 'sporty'. If it was 300+ bhp I could see the excuse for the aggressive wheels, seats etc

    • @mrlilmatt123
      @mrlilmatt123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @therealhood1
      @therealhood1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You have to keep in mind, that the average car here in Germany just has 140 HP, in the US the average is 240 HP... So it's quiet sporty here...

    • @mrlilmatt123
      @mrlilmatt123 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's the same here in the UK although i'd say the average car is around 190-200bhp like a BMW 320d. Like you say though an average car 240bhp.. it's quite a falsehood giving it an 'RS' name with wheel, bodykit and bucket seats! Feel as though you're being sold short, at least back it up with some HP like a Golf R engine.
