Anyone who has a new Stihl 261, they really are the ultimate saw. I bought mine brand new very recently, it is non Mtronic model. It’s fantastic! It is beginning to break in slowly but surely, and it has become just a super strong and extremely revv happy saw. Thing cuts through whatever. I love how easy they are to wrench on. I’m a neat freak, so I like how you can take apart the saw easily and keep it well maintained/clean with zero difficulty.
I've seen multiple videos of both of these saws racing and half the time the ms291 wins and the other half the ms261 wins. Both seem pretty even to me. The 261 is 50ccs and has 2.3 bhp while the 291 is 56cc at 3.76 bhp.
Look at the 261 on a dyno, the stock 261 consistently makes between 4.0 and 4.25HP 🤷♂️ plus, the 261 has a magnesium housing. The body is the motor. Whereas the 291 has a plastic crank housing. The 261 can be a forever saw.

I often use the 261 as a landscaper in my work and i love it , its the perfect mid sized saw for every work , perfect for cutting planks or fell small to middle thick trees
@@earthandbloom sure there is . 1.5 less pounds and about a 1/4 more horsepower . As seen in this video. Not to mention the benefit of a much easier rebuilt saw , more upgrades available , a much better canidate for porting . A better recoil, a decomp , a professional bar and chain from the factory . A 261 is absolutely worth the extra coin… and sadly it’s not that much more . The 29 series at this point shouldn’t exist. It should go straight from the 251 to the 391 …. Really no point in anything in between for a homeowner . Or perhaps keep the 251 , 291 and then the 391…. Too many saws in the same chassis only incrementally stronger than the previous model . It just doesn’t make sense .
Got the 291 last week on sale at Northern Tool. Took my Husqavarna and smashed it, it wasn’t even a year old. External clutch is as dumb as it gets. Safety broke within 3 months, clutch ring popping out constantly. Chain kept popping off the sprocket, total trash. Never again!
@@Hardworkpays209 Rendered 40 cords this season with my 2 Stihl’s… Cut some 80 to 100 footers… Own a closed cab tractor, but yeah I don’t know what I’m doing… Sometimes you have to take a step back to see how small you are… Take care.
@@user-cl7nf8yy8q anyone can say they did this or that on TH-cam buddy but if your chain keeps coming off it’s probably because you’re running her to loose and if you’re upset that it has an external clutch maybe you shouldn’t be getting your bar stuck so much… good day to you as well…
It's crazy how so many people will still buy the 291 even though it's heavier and not as good of a saw in my opinion. The 261 really wakes up with a base gasket delete, timing mod and muffler mod

I got my MS261 today and love it!!!
My MS250 gave me 8 great years, but the MS261 is like a hot knife thru butter in comparison.

Nope that ms 291 I can vouch for I got one and been running it a while. . And it cuts alot faster than that. Your chains need to be filed
When you run a 29 beside a 26, there really isn’t a comparison. But the cost difference is there aswell.

Good marketing, bigger number so it must be the better saw, and it’s cheaper!
And that’s right, this 261 has gills cut into pipe, otherwise stock.
Got mine for 100$ cheaper than the 261.
