My problem is with counter melodies is that usually when I make counter melodies, the layer is good, but no matter what notes i put it in, it sounds awkward together even tho it's on key and compliments each other
I outlined it all but what I would say... Watch the whole melody basics series i have but if you watch just one video, I'd recommend the first one in the playlist because it goes over what notes to pick based on the chords you made. That and the other vids outside of the rhythm one will give you a good scope on what notes to pick so everything makes sense harmonically. Another tip, put that whole melody on a piano and if it all sounds good on just a piano, that'll let you know that sound selection and separation may be the issue. On occasion, I start off and compose a whole melody through piano on the piano roll... Then go to a whole different pattern and paste the chords/melody/counter melody on 3 different instruments. But lets go with the last thing you said, its in key and it compliments each other but it still sounds awkward. The piano test and sound selection can show you if its an issue but one thing I'd say as well that i said in the video, look at separation. If you push the upper counter melody 1 to 2 octaves up, does it mesh with everything again? From a sound selection standpoint, do the 2 sounds have a different timbre? I know this is a lot but I hope it's helpful. I put the playlist link below but also peep my latest sound selection tutorial by going on my page.
