We use R-13 Owens Corning Insulation. The ceiling height varies from basement to basement. I think this one was just under 8'-0".

This is the first video that explains design elements. Appreciate this video very much. I have an unfinished basement and not the skill to complete it. I live in Tennessee.
I am so glad i watched this whole thing before i nailed a stud on my basement. Sk many great ideas tok pick and chose from. Thank you so much for this great work and i sight i wIuld have not had if you did not share. May God bless the work of your hands.
Best video about basement finishing I have seen on you tube. Excellently explained, and very professional work. Thank you so much, and Keep up the good work.
Excellent video. I like your insistence on the colums
amazing video. time was taken to cover every obstacle you may encounter. Explained in simple terms that everyone can understand. Thanks from Canada
Connie Leonard Your welcome Connie!
Tom
Such an awesome video! The half wall idea is genius!!!!
You and your team did an EXCELLENT job. I just purchased a home with a finished basement, but they didnt do a great job on it. The ceiling is too low, there are three rooms, no halfwalls and it just feels uncomfortable. Love the videos.
I actually enjoyed the entire video I just purchased a home with a unfinished basement.
Man I can't believe that I saw the entire video.. Well it's packed with a lot of clever ideas and solutions.. Nicely done.. The project looked very nice.. I curious to see the finish project...
haha I did the same. At first I was like, "This video is too long..." but I ended up watching the entire video. lol
I put off watching this video for a while (even though it was always showing up in my recommended list) because it was "too long". Oops. I should have watched it earlier, because it was absolutely worth the full hour! I've been plotting out how to finish my basement, and this video gave some great ideas for how to deal with various obstacles. Thanks for posting it.
+Mark Rebuck Your welcome Mark! I know it's long...but there was a lot to cover and I tried to keep it as short as I could while still getting to all the points I wanted to cover! Thanks for watching! Good luck with your project. Visit 1basement.com/Pro_Video_Product_Page_2.html to learn even more about my advanced basement finishing training.
Eddie
Awesome video brother. I just started a new remodeling job and your videos are coming in very handy. Please keep posting
Or place see through cabinets with glass doors between the pole and wall where the half wall is and turn it into a nice place to store things and a granite counter on top.
The other 1 foot bump out could be turned into a built in shelf system with see through shelves or see through cabinets.
Great solutions that look awesome. Wish there was more detail on the required header for that egress opening below the sill plate, but still.....Thanks for posting!
This is why the internet is so awesome!! Really great video, thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!
+Brian Finn Glad to help Brian! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Eddie
I gave you a thumbs up for this video in the first 3 minutes. First video that shows how to hide water meter. Also gave me some really good ideas for other things. Thanks!
thanks to your video i was able to avoid some costly mistakes, great video thanks!
Best ever video how to finish your basement learn alot thanks man
Gee, any excellent workmanship and take pride in your work.

beautiful work!!!!! GREAT video. thank you for sharing your skills.
Love your approach!
just wanted to drop a comment to let u know that I really enjoyed this video and kinda wished it didn't end...lol. It is so obvious that u love what u do. Thank you for helping others like me to watch and learn from a professional such as yourself. I am in a process of closing on a house that has a basement that I will be gutting and finishing all by myself. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Sherlock! Yes...I do love what I do! Thanks for watching the entire video...more like this to come.
Eddie
Great video! How do you decide on whether to put vapor barrier on exterior walls?
Nicely done on the remodel and a well documented video. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Marc! A lot of folks need these before and after videos to help them visualize the finished basement product.
Long video with a lot of great information. Thank you for taking the time to share.
+david Cooper Your welcome David...thank you for tuning in my brother!
Wow, I can really tell that this compilation of work has a lot of love put in it. Thanks for going the extra mile to make some quality video
Thanks Julian!
Well 1st thing I would do is "DyrLock" the basement masonry walls with the DryLock solution. You can buy this at Home Depot, it comes in 5 gallon buckets. This seals the pours in the block wall and keep them from getting "damp" which reduces humidity in the basement.
If you have central A/c and Heating ducts in the basement "tap" into them and put 2 to 4 feeds in the ceilings of the basement to "move the air". This moving air will also help reduce humidity.
Hubby found this video very informative and helpful. Gave him great ideas for our basement. He especially liked the half wall and stairs ideas. Still don't want him tackling this project on his own though!! LOL! Thanks for the video!
very nice, loved the detail. I wish you were in Michigan!
Hi Eddie, thanks for making this awesome video, would you have the video for the framing part of this basement ? At one point you said you will show the framed part and finished part. You certainly showed the finished part but was wondering if you have the video right after framing the sections. Would really appreciate, thank you!
Thank you Eddie, love your tuitions.
wow. watched the whole video. half wall idea is awesome. great video!!
Thanks Danny! Yeah half walls rock!
Eddie
Great video! Exactly the solutions I was looking for in my current home studio project!
Thank you! Simple solutions for hiding the ugly's! Appreciate the view!
Eddie
Great video, I just bought my first house and after seeing this video I'll be able to plan out my basement. It was well worth the watch.
Great! I'm glad the basement ideas presented in the video helped you with your basement floor plan design. Good luck with your project Travis! Send me some pictures or videos of your progress!
Eddie
great tutorial.
This is well done -- good narration.
Thank you Mr. Blow! Appreciate the views and the positive comment.
Eddie
Great video!!!! the only thing I would address is any time you have a furnace or water heater that draws combustion air from the house (any unit with a metal flue) you need to make sure either A: the room/closet is big enough or B: If its not big enough add louvered doors or put vents in the walls so the closet can get air. the formula is you need 10 cubic feet of air for every 1000btus input, this comes right out of the international gas code book. with out this the unit will not have proper combustion causing higher than normal levels of CO
-HVAC Service Tech
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!
along with any unit with metal flue I forgot any condensing furnace that is not a two pipe system (condensing furnaces use pvc flue pipe)
you guys are awsome and you make so much sense.side note, for the egreess window, you said minimum when you meant maximum 40".
STEPHEN SHEPHERD Yes...you are correct! Thanks for stopping at our basement finishing channel!
Eddie
I love your videos
this video is exactly what i was looking for. thank you for sharing your experience
Your welcome Dustin.
Thanks for stopping by the channel.
Tom
Nice video, not enough that talk about design decisions and go right into the construction process.
This is a great video. Thanks so much for all the info Sir.
Your welcome Bill! Thanks for stopping by our basement finishing channel!
I was thinking I would do my basement by myself but now that's not happening. It's complicated! I am gonna play the lottery and hire this guy.
It's only as complicated as YOU make it Faria! You can do it!!! Thanks for watching.
Eddie
Hello, I have almost the same basement. I am very impressed by your video. I want to have this finished design. Can you tell estimate cost please. Thanks and great job
In our area as long as you build the wall directly around the box it'self making it part of the wall it's accepted and passed. You can't however build in front of the panel box unless your a minimum of 3'-0" away from the cover.
It would be nice to have more space around the panel box. I have ran wire to different areas of my house so many times and I may do more soon
I love this idea n want to do this but question could we send a pic of our basement looks n u print our pics n show us how to change it ? To this my mothers basement is out dated
Excellent video! I'll be checking out the framing video as well.
Thanks! I'm around if you have any framing questions.
Eddie
Basement Finishing Man -Much appreciated.
Awsome video aw-right. Super informative aw-right. I'm hoping to start my basement and the half walls are a great idea aw-right. Nice and clean aw-right. Aw-right aw-right
Well Aw-right!
is there a how to video on the stair landing i'm missing somewhere. i mean i'm fairly certain i can figure it out
Building code here requires to place heating furnaces into a seperate fireproof bricklayered room with outside shutoff controll and you must not store flammable stuff inside it. I like your videos :)
My company charges about $25.00 per sq ft for this type of basement finish package. To do it yourself your looking at $12.00 to $14.00 per sq ft for all materials complete.
Wow! Thanks Elviro! We appreciate you stopping by out basement finishing channel and watching our training videos.
Eddie
Can you make a video of an closet around hvac and water heater in middle of basement floor?
I like your smaller videos now. Quickly show the problem and the solution. 2-3min per problem/video is ideal for youtube.
Awesome! He'll do great at finishing the basement...give em a chance! Thanks for the positive comment! Good luck with the basement project.
Eddie
Hi, Love your videsos. Very informative. Thank you.
Two quick questions on column masking.
1. You've used 2x6 & I saw them resting on the concrete floor. I am planning my basement & the township asked that, wood in contact with concrete needs to be Treated (PT). How about the columns though? Are they PT or could use untreated 2x6?
2. How are the 2X6 on the opposite side of the half walls supported at the floor? Anchors? I plan using Ramset for the bottom plate for the walls.
Thanks.
Really long but great video!
Have a pretreat of termiticide first. I've seen termites travel up (unexpected areas) to reach their food source of cellulose. It's easier and cheaper to do ahead then cover inspection points and find out you have termites after the damage is done.
What an awesome video. Very helpful and detailed. Thank you!!!
im not even doing all this stuff and i ended up watching the whole thing. great ideas to share!
Thanks for watching Bia!
Awesome video and what awesome finished product! If only you and your company were located in southwestern Ohio I might give you a call. 😉 Looking forward to watching and learning more from your videos.
Thanks for the positive comment Brian! Thanks for watching.
Eddie
Thank you sooo much for sharing your expertise. This video is amazing.
2" x 6" column lumber is regular and this is what should be used.Yes the bottom is touching the floor but that will not hurt the integrity of the framing in this application.
We use Ramset 2 1/2" pins to fasten through the treated bottom plates directly into the concrete floor.
Good job. I want my 1375 sq ft finished basement redone. Don't know where to begin with seeking a contractor and having drawings done. These videos are a good start for knowledge and expectation. I hope to find someone as reliable.
Thanks for watching and commenting Ms. Roslyn! Good luck with your finished basement project!
Eddie
Hey those are some nice techniques. Closets are the best way to hide utilities in a basement. I prefer using metal studs over wood studs when finishing basements. Good Day.
+longislandbasements Hello Long Island Basement! Thanks for stoppin and whatchin! How the basement business in the Big Apple!
Eddie
Hey all is good here. Nice videos! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for sharing this with us, great work... I want to know the distance we need to have in my case the Furnace and the wall? I was reading and some people said 1.6 (18 Inch) and other said will depend of the furnace specs. Thanks in advance
Hi Jose! Most modern furnaces (Gas or Electric) can have the new framed walls 2" to 3" away on the "non-serviceable" sides of the furnace. The serviceable side should be 6" or better. This is my rule of thumb, not everyone will agree with it, but...I've never had any issues and I'm about 1000+ finished basements into my career.
Eddie
That was a great video!
Thanks Bill! Appreciate you watching the whole thing!
Eddie
Band on the run!
Awesome video, very informative even if someone has different taste. Just bought a house so we are itching to make some changes. Your game plan really shows in your work. Where are you located? Homeowner must have been elated.
We're located outside Harrisburg PA. Thanks for checking-out our basement videos! Good luck with your project KAP 1492.
Eddie
Excellent series! What do you do for mold remediation in a humid basement? Right now we have raw block and I'm looking to keep mold down should the de-humidifier not do its job right. Basement is not wet but in summer it gets humid and promotes mold.
@Basementfinishingman awesome vids man very informative.
+Diaspora man Thanks for watching!
Eddie
Awesome video. What happens if you need to access, say, the flex duct above the ceiling? You have to cut a hole in the drywall ceiling and patch it back in?
+MrFixBroken Flex duct is non-serviceable so there should be no reason to access it. Anything that does need access to it(gas shut off's, water shut-offs, damper controls, etc.) will have an access panel installed in the drywall if needed. Otherwise it's the same stuff you have between your first and second floor of your home and we never even think about that stuff!
Eddie
Can you explain how you were able to get around the code clearance requirements regarding the electrical panel?
I am building my basement mostly by following your videos. Thank you. I have the exact problem with the stairs ending too close to the wall like you have in this video. Can you tell us what dimensional wood you used and a basic "how to" explanation of how to build the bottom step landing?
I used 2" x 6" framing with a piece of 3/4" plywood on top of it to make this landing Wayne. Frame it 12" o.c. and use treated lumber instead of regular lumber so it does not rot-out over time.
Eddie
Couple of questions. You never mention moisture barrier. The rule of thumb keeps changing... I have naked block walls, not water proof painted. I don't have any serious water problem, but I do have seepage, (white powder) in certain areas during the spring. Also, builder skimped on a row of block making the central air duct work about 5"10"from floor. I'm 5'7" and am leery of finishing off the basement. It runs the entire end to end separating the front from back of house. They also put the heating/central system under the staircase but spread out the electric water heater, water pump from well as well as the sump pump and radon fan in an area that is 12x17, wasting this space. Is there anyway that some of these items can be moved closer together to same from wasting this much space? The heating system is probably the hardest to move? Also we have 3 tiny basement windows 12x18" close to the ceiling with tiny exterior wells. Can I make these larger without causing structural damage. Everyone in my area wants to charge by the hour of what it would cost to actually plan the basement to figure out the cost of renovating it? I want to plan it before actually doing it.
Nice video. Appreciate the share. Question though: not any detail around the powder room. The sewer is part way up the wall, so you must have used a grinder pit or something to deal with the discharge. I’d like to know how you tapped into the main drain. I assume you used a ‘Y’, but which way was the sweep? Did you go up, over and back down or what? Also, how far did you have to go to tap into the vent and detail? Thanks.
Great video. As for it being "LONG" just play it at 2x speed. Still easy to follow along and only takes half the time to watch!
Thanks Dean!
Apologies if i missed it. I even browsed through the comments looking for an answer but how do you attach the 2x6 to the steel pillar? Ramset?
Cool video, a before and after walkthrough would have made it even better.
Greatest
Wondering how you framed the pole (2x6) to the half wall (2x4) to accept drywall.
What do you think of using rigid foam as insulation against the basement wall?
Do you use the yellow Ramset load for attaching the 2 x 4s to support beams or is that a different load?
what do you do about junction boxes in the ceiling?
I want to put a sliding barn door you can buy at home depot but 400 is too much for one door n install kit. I have open joists but water pipes running underneath the joists for the furnace. What do I do?
Great video, watched the whole thing. With the stair platform, is there any issue with taking out 10" worth of the stair stringer to facilitate the platform. I would think that taking that much would cause harm to the structural integrity. Did you do anything with the framing to reinforce that bottom section of the stringer? Thank you for your time.
Yes David we reinforced the stingers by attaching them to the two stairway walls in several areas from underneath the steps before we drywalled. This takes the weight off of the base of the stringers significantly.
I have the "pipe strapped to the wall problem" on the same wall that is too close to the stairs...
Enjoyed your video. Thanks.
I understand the need for banding a ceiling if there are many pipes and wires. Though, for 3 water pipes, (Pex pipes btw. not copper) why didn't you just turn them 90* and just run them in your hvac soffits? I'd be very happy with an extra 1.5" of ceiling height in any basement.
There were several places along those runs where the lines went up through into the first floor multiple times to feed the kitchen and bathrooms above...This was the obvious choice for us for this given project.
Eddie
Still could be done. Just run the lines from the soffit back to original holes in the floor joist cavity. I'm thinking it's either work to move the lines or strap the ceiling. Though extra height is always preferred.
Not saying it's not possible, it was just not cost effective to reroute all of the plumbing leading to the 1st floor baths and kitchen down through the soffit. to avoid banding the ceiling which took all of 15 minutes.
Could you band the ceiling with 2x3's to save cost?
can you put a video showing how to make a bookcase ?
Love your videos! Also what about notching out the pipes or wires if you can?
If certain situations for existing wires and pipes we do notch framing to get wire and pipes inside walls or up inside floor joists. But I like to drill new holes for all my new plumbing and electric.
Thanks for stopping by my basement finishing TH-cam channel!
Eddie
Oh ok sounds good! We all have different ways of doing things. All of your work comes out good regardless.
lots of great information! How do you access Electrical and Plumbing components for repair/maintenance if you completely surround it in drywall?
+aubreyrecords We install small pvc access panels where ever we need future access points.
Eddie
Where did you get that egress window kit. I need one for my basement.
What company did you buy the shatterproof glass doors from for the egress?
Great video Eddie! Do you go further into #9 (stairs platform landing) in your basement finishing series? I have a staircase that is less than 12” from the wall and I will be building a platform landing from the second tread, and then a final step on either side of the landing. Thanks for sharing your videos on TH-cam, I’ve already learned so much!
Kevin
Hello! 12" away...Holy Cow! That's close! I do not have a specific video for a set of steps that close to the exterior wall. But you would have to get at least 2 steps high with your platform to get enough turning radius from that wall that's only 12" away from the last step. You would need probably 2 steps down on each side to get at least 32" away from that wall at the base of the steps.
Eddie
Thanks for the reply Eddie! It’s dumbfounding where the stairs were placed in our basement, the house is only 11 years old - I’ll chalk it up to poor planning! No problems that building a platform isn’t covered in the series - I came up with a plan using the 3D modeling program SketchUp. Nonetheless, I’ve already learned so much from the TH-cam videos that I’ll be purchasing the video series later this evening as I’m eager to learn more! Even in the areas where I’m proficient, I’m learning useful and valuable tips! If you have a message board in the member’s area, I’ll post some images of my finished platform to help others. Thanks again!
Kevin
Great work! A few questions:
How much did this job cost? I'm curious as I will soon be doing my basement and would like to know the overall costs.
Would it also make sense to use metal studs instead of wood for the basement?
Did you place down any sub-floor and if yes, what kind?
Drywall ceilings or drop ceiling?
I say drop ceiling, How are you going to do a termite inspection without it?
Beautiful job! Watching this video just makes me long for a finished basement even more! My family and I just moved into our first home and want to finish the basement but the house is really old so it will probably be a very expensive and difficult job. I wish we could get a master like yourself if only we had the money *sigh*. I mean I'm still trying to wrap my head around a mortgage lol! Question: How do you determine where to install a bathroom in the basement? Are there certain factors that make a bathroom impossible to build in the basement?
We can put the bathroom wherever we want. I design the project accordingly and place the bathroom in the most logical and function space I can. With today's modern sewage ejection systems you can situate the bathroom anyplace you like! Good luck with your future basement finishing project Jay! I'm here if you need to talk.
Eddie
BasementFinishingMan Then there is hope for me yet! Thanks! When I actually have enough money saved to finish my basement, I would like to use your videos as reference if you don't mind! My basement is pretty small so could you do a video for putting a bathroom in a small basement for an older home?
jay carter Hey Jay! It's already in the bathroom training section at the Basement Finishing University. Thanks for stopping by our basement TH-cam channel.
Eddie
Wish you were In NY😩
