Stumbled on this video since I'm currently doing my basement, very happy I waited. Those lumber prices just a few years ago were insane. I spent $3.25 for 2x4x8 framing lumber.
This video was a great help for an assignment I'm doing for a community college project. As an experienced DIYer who's done a little bit of all of this work, I'd accounted for some things but this video filled in many blanks. Thank you for being so thorough.
Eddie, I will be closing on my house at the end of September. My basement is a little under 900 sqft (Unfinished). I've been shopping around, and the all-in low-end utilizing a contractor was 35k, and the high-end of 55k. I grew up in a construction/masonry/carpenter family and didn't have faith in me taking on a project that size by myself. Then I came across this channel, and it changed my mind completely. I've watched all of the videos at least 3 times already, and this video was the icing on the cake. Now I know I can do it; the good thing is, I won't have to pay over 15k. I went online, priced everything as I watched this video, and added it all to my cart at Home Depot. Grand total....$12530; ok, I might sub out the drywall. 😁😁Thank you!
Drywall really just depends on how complex your basement will be. I've drywalled my entire main floor (about 1230 sqft or so). My basement (750 sqft) is going to be significantly easier because I'm going to just do the exterior walls with only one interior wall for under the stairs for a server closet and a location to host light switches. I'm just 29 though and I weightlift regularly so lifting the drywall isn't too difficult for me. I also bought a drywall lift a while back so ceilings are also pretty easy.
Thanks for taking time to show us step by step and not assuming that we should know certain steps. You are a great teacher !! I’ve learned so much from you
Hello Alecia! You can do this! I would sub-out the drywall and do the rest yourself using the BFU 2.0 training as your guide. Good luck with the project, and thank you for you watching and commenting on my video. I'm always here if you have project questions. ~Eddie

I have been very handy for many years even where I rent my Landlord loved me because I would fix everything in his two family home. I’m 58 but in great shape and so I’m ready to make the move to be an owner. But I can’t wait to get into that basement and renovate and add even more value to my new home. Absolutely one of the most informative informational videos I've seen on TH-cam. This is exactly the information I want to know when I'm making the decision to finish myself or contract out thanks for your time and effort putting this video out
I just watched and subscribed...the best I've ever seen on You Tube! My house is under construction with an unfinished basement with the premise of finishing it myself down the road. I thought I've seen a lot of videos already (and there are a lot) and give me a basic knowledge of the process, until I saw your video and realized how much I didn't know and missed with what I have seen so far. I wished you were in my area, and have your company do the job instead......seriously!
In this video I breakdown the actual cost of finishing your own basement at today's current building supply prices. If you've been wondering how much it costs to finish a basement in 2021 this is definitely the video to watch! ~Eddie
Thanks for sharing. I finished my basement a year and a half ago with help from your videos. I did run into a few extra costs such as a radon system that I did myself, Water powered back up sump with radon cover, replaced parts of duct work with low profile duct for head room, arc/gfi breakers for most all circuits. House is 3 year old open concept and didn't like the floor bounce so doubled the joist under great room and kitchen and ran blocking else where. So with 1300 sq ft finished drywall with 2inch foam between stud wall and concrete ,full bath,, premium vinyl flooring, trim doors and hardware same as upstairs I am all in at about 25k. With the 2, 4 by 4 windows and extra stairs going outside it could be made into 3 bedrooms according to the code inspector but for now it is the wife's craft room and a man cave. Yes all permits were pulled and fully inspected. Because of lumber and material price increase I would maybe be at 35 k if I did it today but it is still a bargain .
@@BasementFinishingMan No I am a fairly experienced with carpentry plumbing and electrical but the basement has it's own particularities that I didn't care to learn as I went making and learning from my mistakes so I watched your videos for tips and watching your crew to avoid as many mistakes as possible. Maintaining ceiling height and that to make it feel like regular space I had to sacrifice floor space to disguise mechanicals is something that is difficult in basements if you are not familiar with them I learned from your videos. It looks great without weird soffits and bump outs. I have a knock down finish on my ceilings and only 3 8 by 8 access panels in it for hose bib shutoff valves. Couldn't be happier.
I will follow your channel from now on. I live in the state of Utah and would like to know if I can come to you to work for at least 15 days to learn some skills and techniques. if possible clear. A big hug. and The more you teach, the more you learn and grow and are blessed.

Been watching your videos for the last few years now. You guys do excellent work. I'm in South Jersey, and want to do a few areas in my basement, and your vids will sure come in handy. Thanks. Keep up the great work!
Took me about 2 years to finish my basement, I had your subscription to bfu and watched tons of your videos. About 1,200 square feet and subbed out electrical and drywall (1,200 in labor total, but this was someone I knew well and he did the work a little at time on the way home from work). I would estimate around $16k total and I did a 1/2 bath. Pretty spot on estimate since my electrical and drywall labor wasn’t typical
Eddie, I love your videos. We started out basement, and you help us a lot with all your videos. Thanks for giving too much details. I hope you show us how to do a front porch.
Very informative! Been contemplating Finishing my basement for years now. Your breakdown might just force me to DIY it LOL! Just need to build my confidence to do it.
Is there a reason you use the light cans and bulbs vs the new pancake led lights that are adjustable? They seem like a lot less money overall and you just drill hole and install.
💠Wish I could do my own. I’m starting my basement renovations and it’s costing us $40k💠Putting in a kitchen, bathroom, 2 rooms and new step to the backyard. I’m using a contractor.
Thank you for the great video. What are the man hours of labor required for a contractor to finish a 1000 sq ft basement with bath? I can then multiply that by two - four to estimate how long it will take me.
Great video Eddie. What's your thoughts on waterproofing your basement before finishing it? I have been told I need to waterproof my basement before I finish it because they always leak at some point.
Thanks for doing this video! It's very informative. My parents are in the process of buying a house with an unfinished walk-out basement. They told me that I can move-in downstairs but I would have to finish it myself. I figured I can actually save money by putting my savings into finishing their basement and then not have to pay rent for the next 5, 10 or however many years I end up living there. I've got a very rough floor plan drawn up (thanks to your videos for all the great ideas) and I'm just trying to figure out the budget. I would love to sub out the drywall work - I helped my dad renovate a bathroom last year and I did the drywall because my dad has a bad back. It was a miserable job and, while acceptable, didn't turn out very good. I would like to avoid it if I can afford to. Anyways, thanks again for all your videos. Also, if you need an idea for a video, may I suggest that you do a video on how to find good subcontractors. I have no idea how to find a drywall subcontractor, what questions to ask them or how much of the project needs to be done before I start getting estimates.

Just looking to clean up the walls of Efflorescence. The prior owners painted over it but not sure if it was a water proofer, if so it didn’t work there is bubbling and chipping. Looking for an affordable fix and just to clean up space for a nice laundry area. Thanks!

I finished my basement with open ceiling and painted with black. Finishing drywall-mud/sanding is the hardest part. I would recommend to hire drywall guy just in case i will do another basement job 😁 great info on those numbers but now they are double with the inflation!!
Hi Eddie! Thanks for all your insight into all things basement. Your knowledge & expertise in this area has been beyond helpful and very much appreciated. My husband & I are looking to finish our basement soon and this video came at just the right time. In this video you talk about wood studs for the framing. I'm curious what is your opinion of metal studs vs. wood studs? Why is that? And is there a major price difference between the two?
Do not use them at all...not much cheaper than wood currently. To much of a commercial installation causing to many modifications to standard residential applications. ~Eddie
Hi Eddie, I'm in the middle of finishing my 1200 sq/ft basement with the help of your videos. I'm in central PA and want to sub out the electrical, can you give me an idea on what that will cost?
I love the channel, one thing that wasnt included was the value of you're home. A well done basment (diy or pro) can add a ton of reale value per square foot.
Eddie, great breakdown of the costs, I'm excited to start on our project! Any suggestions on ways to save money at the stores like sign up for Lowe's credit card and use 5% off or Home Depot Pro account and get rewards or any other tips?
Hello sir I was wondering if you could provide ideas for alternative materials to reduce the cost of finishing basements due to the sky high cost North America is experiencing. I have a disability so it would be difficult for me to finish the basement myself
What do you think about using 2x3's for exterior walls to save on costs? I know it's unconventional, but it's quite a savings right now. There would still be room for electrical, probably not plumbing but can move to 2x4's in that area. Your thoughts??
For insulation, for using Home Depot calculator on a 1500sf 9 ft ceiling, it tells me total of 33 bags, seems way lot that the 8 bag you mentioned. A little confused
Just count how many stud cavities you have and add it up. Then buy the right number of bags to fill the walls. If you count 100 stud cavities and each bag has 10 pieces of insulation, you would need 10 bags...and so on... 8 bags is middle of the road for us. The insulation calculator is wrong! Just physically count the pieces needed and buy accordingly. Best, ~Eddie
Hey Eddie, I've watched your channel for quite sometime and I'm finally ready to start this huge project. I'm out in Berks county and was wondering if our building codes are the same since we are so close. It would be easy to follow your videos step by step that way. Thank you
Contractors are asking for 40k for 535 sq ft of the basement in North Grafton, MA. What should I do? I do not have enough knowledge to pull the permits myself.
Don't pull them! Most homeowners do not get permits from what I learned over the years...It's you house and you can do whatever you want to it without inviting the government to dinner! ~Eddie
Hi Eddie. Would you recommend the recessed housing with trim and the separate led bulbs or the recessed housing without trim, then buying the all in one trim and led light units?
Where the heck to people buy green pressure treated base plates.... I can't find them anywhere. All I seem to see is the darker brown pressure treated wood for decking and outdoor use. I have tried multiple lumber yards also and they all are not selling unless you are a contractor or builder with them specifically. Do the Brown pressure treated 2x4's work for basement plates?
Home Depot and Lowes both sell Pressure Treated Lumber. Some treated lumber is more brown than green in color, but as long as the tag on the lumbeer says it's pressure treated lumber it works just same whether its green or brownish in color. ~Eddie
Hi Eddie, I'm going to sign contract for our new construction SFH next week. We are planning to finish our basement in near future. What are the things I can plan right now to avoid high costs and hassles later when finishing basement? Thanks!
Hi Ken! Thanks for the view and positive comment! I actually have all the actual detailed materials lists for every phase of the project over at the Basement Finishing University 2.0 training in the members area... eddie-case.mykajabi.com/store/ZNDvAVqL
Hey Eddie I love your videos and I also joined basement finishing University a few months back. I am also in pa just an hour away from Mechanicsburg 🤣👊.. I have 2 questions 1 where do you recommend buying the cube of studs from home depot, lowes, lumber yard? Also I noticed some videos are not on basement finishing are they going to be uploaded? I could have just missed them but was curious. Hopefully I will be tackling my basement this year! Thanks brother!
Home Depot for the framing Lumber. No...they are on my Bathroom and Kitchen and DIY video TH-cam channels... Thanks for joining the BFU 2.0...I'll be here if you questions about the project brother! ~Eddie
Hey Eddie, great great great video sir! took me a lot of time to think and decide whether i can finish my basement on my own, but your videos have given me the confidence. I wanna signup for basement finishing university but i have a quick question. Do you also have videos in your course that guides noobs like me to turn/finish the basement into a secondary suite? also do you help via email if we get stuck or have questions?

Hi Larry! Well we don't use any, never have and probably never will as it is not needed for most synthetic plank flooring systems over a concrete floor. So...I have not factored any underlayment into my costs. But if you're going to be using that product you would need to factor it in! Thanks for the views brother! ~Eddie
Life proof flooring suggests against it. Everything is built into the plank. They do list a certain type of underlayment if you choose to use it. All others violate their warranty
Good afternoon Matt I'm very impressed with your knowledge and you're awesome professionalism when Comes to basement remodeling I am happy if you could do a cost effective Water proofing Of the basement and all materials and labor Associated With that type project. Maybe you already have a video if so I will happy for you to send me that link.
Awesome video....I have. a question thought. is sealing your basement with Drylok something that you recommend to do, even if everything look dry and nice?. Thanks!
I have about 1,500 square feet, but all of the framing is done. However, I was quoted $105K to finish the whole thing. Seemed ridiculous. Plumbing is already in place as well. I would need plumbing for a wet bar though. I don’t have time to finish it myself, but I may partially finish it.
Yes Charles 100K for 1500sq.ft. is not all that uncommon at todays building material prices. You could finish yourself for around 25K, and keep the other 75K in the bank! Good luck with the project my brother! ~Eddie
@@BasementFinishingMan thanks. I think I’m going to take your advice on outsourcing the drywall and the insulation and finish the rest myself. I take it finishing the bathroom is the last thing you do after walls and floors.
I was asked to design and style a family members basement but not sure how much to charge them. The basement is already framed for the specific wishlist items (gym, bedroom, bath, living area, and a game area) so I will be working with contractor to design and then style it. Do I charge per room or a flat fee?
@@BasementFinishingMan so it's actually a bit cheaper, awesome! How scaleable are these prices? My house is relatively small, about 650 sq ft. Could I take about 70% of the price for a dyi and contractor estimate for things like drywall and insulation? Thanks!

~Eddie
You the best...saving me alot of $$$....Thanks for helping us
Can list tools needed and the cost to either purchase or rent?
Hi Jonathan! Here is the link to that video to answer your questions>>> th-cam.com/video/cha9OfWJoIQ/w-d-xo.html
Yes it can and does! Thanks for watching Jake! ~Eddie
Eddie, great breakdown of the costs, I'm excited to start on our project! Any suggestions on ways to save money at the stores like sign up for Lowe's credit card and use 5% off or Home Depot Pro account and get rewards or any other tips?
Hello sir
I was wondering if you could provide ideas for alternative materials to reduce the cost of finishing basements due to the sky high cost North America is experiencing.
Great video!! Now all I need is a 1000sqft basement
Everything are well said
Thank you!
Hey Eddie, I've watched your channel for quite sometime and I'm finally ready to start this huge project. I'm out in Berks county and was wondering if our building codes are the same since we are so close. It would be easy to follow your videos step by step that way. Thank you
Yep…should be the same. Good luck with the project!
What color is the synthetic flooring that you show here? (The darker one) I love that color.
You are Awesome ED 👍🏾
Thank Charles! So are you...thanks for watching! ~Eddie
Thanks Eddie! Curious how much a sub for framing & electrical would be for the same basement example?
Around 5K to 6K
Thanks!
Quick question, when you sub out the drywall, is framing generally included?
No just the drywall is included. ~Eddie
Excellent content. Super informative. Do you have a bill of materials list one could use? Is your presentation shared anywhere?
Hi Ken! Thanks for the view and positive comment! I actually have all the actual detailed materials lists for every phase of the project over at the Basement Finishing University 2.0 training in the members area... eddie-case.mykajabi.com/store/ZNDvAVqL
Thanks! I just signed up.
@@kenn5269 See you inside the members area Ken. I'm always here if you have questions about your project my brother! ~Eddie
Good video
~Eddie
How much labour cost per sqft for only framing work ?
Hey Eddie, great great great video sir! took me a lot of time to think and decide whether i can finish my basement on my own, but your videos have given me the confidence. I wanna signup for basement finishing university but i have a quick question. Do you also have videos in your course that guides noobs like me to turn/finish the basement into a secondary suite? also do you help via email if we get stuck or have questions?
Hello! Yes I'm always here for my students questions. We also have an AWESOME private Facebook group that only our members have privilege to, where all of my students can bounce ideas off of one another and share project experiences and ideas. ~Eddie
Nice video I watched almost all of then. I would like to know where do You get the romex from ? Price looks very attractive....
Home Depot...but it’s gone up more since I made this video!
Hi Eddie - does your company do basement design services?
What about the underlayment for the flooring? Usually priced around .15 to .45 cents sq ft.
Thank you sir.
Thanks!
Only if your basement walls are Masonry units...Concrete walls need no sealing.
Eddie
Thank you Eddie
How much would it cost for electrical work including your cost to hire an electrician ?
Love your videos! How much would you charge to design a basement from scratch
Thanks Kimberly! Here is my Design Service Link>>>> eddie-case.mykajabi.com/store/Q2LaQQNF
I was asked to design and style a family members basement but not sure how much to charge them. The basement is already framed for the specific wishlist items (gym, bedroom, bath, living area, and a game area) so I will be working with contractor to design and then style it. Do I charge per room or a flat fee?
@@designsbykimg9608 Flat rate
@@BasementFinishingMan thank you
Thank you Good job
Welcome 👍
Do prices shown for trim and doors, etc., account for optional items like a bathroom? Does your trim and door total cost include the bathroom?
Yes it does!
@@BasementFinishingMan so it's actually a bit cheaper, awesome!
How scaleable are these prices? My house is relatively small, about 650 sq ft. Could I take about 70% of the price for a dyi and contractor estimate for things like drywall and insulation?
Thanks!
How don’t you have at least 1/2 million subs....?
Can't put a price on learning as well!
Does ur property tax go up correspondingly?
What happened to that spreadsheet if this information
Spreadsheet?...?
@@BasementFinishingMan Can you put the Excel spreadsheet with this cost break down please?
Your link to your free basement finish pre-construction video is dead. Is there a better link?
