My old playground growing up only we used motorcycles. Brings back a lot of memories, in fact the bridge you walked across originally was a railroad flat car that was put in when they were building Interstate 10. They would park their heavy equipment on the other side at night using that to cross. That whole area is basically a catch basin that protects Indio and everything East from major floods coming out of the mountains. We called it "the dike" and everyone knew what you were talking about. The area you walked across heading to the power lines was a great spot to catch and release sidewinders at night. In fact that place would come alive at night with kangaroo rats, scorpions, lizards, bats, jack rabbits, coyotes, ....etc. Another fun fact when you're hiking up in the foot hills, underneath your feet is a section of the San Andreas fault. If you look at the foothill formations you're walking on you can see that they're coming out of the ground at a 45° angle, San Andreas has been busy over the years. If you look at the foothills going to the West you'll see groves of palm trees in a straight line. That line is the San Andreas fault. When we were kids we'd go out to the trees and dig down about a foot and hit water courtesy of the fault line. Glad you enjoyed it.

My friends and I would catch rattlesnakes and sidewinders in that area 👍

We did this hike a week ago thanks to this video. We watched it before our trip and now just watched it again. Very well done! It was an amazing hike and the best part of our week in Indio. As a 62-year old, I am proud and thankful that I could do it so well and enjoy it so much!

Wow, what an amazing desert hike! Through the years I've driven right by there on I-10 and never realized there was such good hiking up in those hills! We'll be out visiting California in June, but from my desert experience and your advise, we'll pass on this hike this trip. Thanks for sharing this great video!

I love the Badlands you see driving towards Salton Sea from Borrego Springs, so pretty, have yet to take any hikes there yet. Powerline trails are usually a no go for me, I don't like to buzz all the way home. I love wind caves. This is a good call for April, since you get brush free trails, so you can see the snakes better.

Lived in LaQuinta just accross the valley. Got to check out the trails in the back of LaQuinta cove. Hiked there alot as a kid & teenager. Give it a look & check out the steps carved out in the rock. There located at the south west corner at the top of the cove trail head.

Would love to come here in the winter when it's colder, like Nov-Dec. Is it safe from things like flash flooding though? Some of the canyon areas looked sketchy in the event of a flash flood.

A couple in their 70s went for a hike there yesterday. They somehow got separated and the wife called police . By the time rescuers found him he had already died. It was over 100 degrees with heavy rain and lightning strikes. What were they thinking?

meh... trucked the area for awhile. Most of it looks like a thermonuclear war occurred sometime in the last 100 years or so. You can have it. Give me deep green forest and snow capped peaks.

I hope the golfers don't hit their golf balls into the Indio Hills Badlands. They'll never get back out onto the golf course after one bad swing. :-)
