Hiking Mugu Peak Trail in Malibu & Point Mugu State Park

  • Point Mugu State Park is a beautiful state park on the western end of the Santa Monica Mountain range. The park has dozens of miles of hiking trails and many lead to beautiful coastal views like Mugu Peak. Mugu Peak is a 2.5 mile round trip trail (the way I hiked it) to an awesome peak and viewpoint in the mountain range. It is a no joke uphill hike though and you will get the blood pumping if you do it. Check out my video on the trail and let me know what you think in the comments.
    *Hiked in late March 2021*

Amazing views man! There's this cliff in Malibu called "Sunset Point" and the sunsets are AMAZING. I also really like this spot in Laguna Beach called "Top of the World". Amazing mountain and ocean views

Awesome, I will have to look up Sunset Point, sounds awesome. I have been to Top of the World but it has been a long time and I need to go back!

No Josh you definitely weren’t being too dramatic about how hard this hike was. It’s not that you were out of shape it’s insanely hard for being so short. I’ve done it once and I was really shocked how crazy it was.

I just did this hike a week ago. It does qualify for a hard hike! So nice to relive it the easy way by watching your video!

This looks amazing. We felt like we didn’t get to explore nearly as much as we could in and around the Santa Monica mountains when we visited. Underrated area for sure.

It totally is! I don't spend much time there either since it is a pretty far drive for me with traffic but I like the area a lot.

Coming back to this video after a few months. I did this hike while visiting the area this time last month after seeing this video and it's no joke! I don't think the video can do justice just how steep that first stint of the hike is up to the split! Definitely worth the hike and effort for the great views! Sadly, when I went, there was a bunch of low cloud cover off the water, but the views back east were stunning! Thank you again for posting and letting us know of a great hike!

I used to run this at one time in my life; it is really steep and dangerous on hot days. People have died from heat exhaustion in this trail. Fun Fact: Pt. Mugu lagoon used to be a Japanese fishing village with access to the sea before the naval base was put in.
With Oxnard Air Force base and Mugu; I grew up in the 1960s with several sonic booms daily as jet broke the sound barrier.

One of my absolute favorite hikes ever. I particularly like the trail from the other side which goes through the giant coreopsis forest if it's still there. 35 years ago I ran up and down. Too many heart attacks since. Thanks for the nostalgia hit.

Great job highlighting Mugu Peak Trail! We just did this hike a few weeks ago for the first time. Tough, but well worth it! We hiked it counter-clockwise. Very dicey going down that steep section, but felt your pain as you hiked up it. 😂 Agree, this hike has some of the best coastal views in southern California. 😊👍

I do this hike a couple times of year because of the rare birds near the top of the trail. I go there on behalf of the Audubon Society to count them annually; I'm the only one young enough and in shape to hike up there to get them. the views are certainly worth it

This video is fantastic and made me go try it for myself. I am a 50+ male in decent shape and the route he took is really steep and had to stop and start multiple times. I did the hike with my daughter and her boyfriend (both in there early 20s) and they really had no issue. Keep up the great work.

Wow! A beautiful hike. My experience hiking peaks in SoCal is that you do switchbacks all day long until you get about 300 feet from the summit. Then it’s like the trail builders got bored and you have a straight up route to the top - just when you are nearing exhaustion.

Glad you got your butt kicked by this Chumash trail, it's my stomping grounds and when I take too much time off not hiking it upon returning it kicks my ass big time. In the evenings you'll notice a ton more people running up and down the super steep parts and not flinching, I have no clue how they don't slip and fall considering the tons of loose rocks. And yes that was Sandstone Peak.

I really like your content but seriously if you can touch your toes it’s not hard.
I’ve run up and down this in under 30-40 min.
That’s also not a base it’s a shooting range. It’s not used that often but the echos ring up the hill. Just bring shoes with good grip and you’re good to go great views.
