    Valentin Dikul is a fucking legend. Man was an OG circus gymnast, fell off of a trapeze because the rope broke. Got snapped to hell and back, broke backbone and got partially paralyzed by that. Then developed one of the best programms for back trauma recovery. The crux of that program is to get the core so strong it stabilizes the broken backbone and you can walk again, I am not shitting you. Through that he got so strong he returned to the circus as a "strength joggler". Think juggling cannon balls, kettlebells, his signature was holding a car on a platform on his back. That's why he does this cool motion after the lifts, it's from his circus days. The dude is in his seventies and he is still insanely strong. I think he still squats 300 or some ludicrous shit like that.

    • @Cin9999
      @Cin9999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +116

      If you „break your back“ the broken bone is neither the problem nor is it unstable after it heals, paralysis happens bc the broken spine ruptures the nerves around it.

    Valentin Dikul (featured in this video) broke his back in a circus accident as a teenager. Doctors said he'd never walk again. He did his own rehab and went on to do many amazing feats of strength with barbells and kettlebells. He juggled and snatched a 176lb kettlebell etc etc. My buddy (world champion) Valery Fedorenko has been to Dikul's gym/clinic in Moscow and said the weights are legit. Dikul works with clients with spine injuries to get them walking again. He keeps his own training and rehab he did a secret because no one else would do it anyway. There are documentaries on TH-cam of him and more info is in Pavel Tsatsouline's book, Power To The People Pro.

      Do you do them weighted? In my opinion weighted calisthenics (primarily weighted pullups and dips) and heavy compound lifts (deadlift and squat variations) are the best program for general strength training. You gain immense pulling and pushing power and they work through actually functional ranges of motion. If you manage to get to a 2*bodyweight pull-up or dip you are probably among some of the strongest people on the planet relative to your body weight.
      You can also easily combine this style of training with more traditional gymnastics, and gymnasts are, in my opinion again, the strongest athletes relative to their bodyweight in regards to universal range of motion (as in they have serious strength in every direction). Gymnasts also tend to cross over well into other strength sports relative to their bodyweight because they already have insane levels of conditioning.

    Valetin Dikul was a great Russian "Circus Strongman" in his younger years having recovered from serious back injury using a program of this own creation.
    That said it's well known that many of the feats of strength and weights lifted by Circus Strongmen have long been heavily embellished for the sake of spectacle.
    These lifts in particular which were done sometime in the late 90s or early 2000s when Dikul would have already been in his 50s have pretty confidently been debunked as fake weights (or at least weights significantly less than what is stated) there are just too many suspicious things about them. Not enough apparent bar bend or whip during the squat and deadlift especially for a Olympic bar, the way he bothers to walk out and back a "limit weight", no spotters, the fact that these lifts would at this time all have been ATWR or near ATWR despite Dikul being in his mid 50s, The goofy amount of shaking he does with the deadlift at lockout for no good reason, that's 1015 pounds with no straps, no way someone could shake the bar up and down like that for 5 seconds and continue to hold onto it with out grip failing...

    Hi Zack. On that blood pressure thing here, 15:30 , the body has various compensation mechanisms for blood loss such as vasoconstriction and pulling fluid from interstitial space into the vasculature. This is called compensated shock. Draining blood from the body won't reduce blood pressure until all the compensation mechanisms are exhausted. If that happens, you enter a state called decompensated shock. When that happens, your body loses the ability to raise blood pressure. If you keep losing blood at that point, then blood pressure will drop. This is less healthy than lowering blood pressure via losing weight etc, because decompensated patients will often die.

    I've studied medieval dagger fighting (Fiore dei Liberi) and last dude's techniques look legit: Get control over opponents knife arm while delivering finishing blow, what ever the weapon is being used you need to control opponent's weapon before commit to offence. Double hits are constant threat and with edged weapon that might mean that "winner" gets lethal wound while "loser" survives with mere flesh wound.
    Opponent's being novices this all looks clean and smooth, with more experienced opponent there would be much more both stabbing and cutting each other while trying to gain control. Looking much more messy.
    One thing is that at one move he let's go from opponent's knife arm and presumes that what ever he does ends up killing him. Which is error. He should keep controlling the knife until the opponent is down. Mainly he controls his opponent weapon, but on one instance he let's the knife arm go.
    Axe against which he defends is being used badly: wide strikes, bad footwork, poor recovery.

      @@vittocrazi Good point. Choreographing isn't bad, infact it's absolutely necessary, but here it's presumed that once (presumed) assailant looses control of the knife/axe he has nothing in his toolbox. So basically being a person who has never practiced with knife/axe... Which is true for most people.
      Manuscripts which i've studied show usually one movement and then counter and counter-counter movements on both sides what could follow after the first move.

    I actually think that Andrey Smaev's body composition is a very good example on keeping a healthy body, while still pusing the weights and achieving great lifts. Of course the guy is on PEDs, but him not being worried about getting more jacked than he already his, and also not worrying about having a six pack all of the time is going to keep this guy running for a lot of time. Even if you don't do drugs, aiming for a body like his - minus the super human feats of strength, obviously - is more than achievable, with some good numbers on the main lifts.

      @agapp11able damn that guys the real deal 😅

    • @AveSicarius
      @AveSicarius 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean it really depends on when he was the instructor, because Systema guys were apparently hired to train the Russian military at one point, and Systema is absolutely a bogus martial art (to the point it's basically worse than Aikido, which actually has some use if you are already skilled at grappling). Some of this does look a bit like Systema, but that might just be the unresisting demonstration partners. The Russian military now uses combat Sambo, which is very effective.
      That being said some of it looks legitish, like he clearly has some experience handling weapons, the only thing I would say is that he left the opponents hand completely free when he was doing knife defence/fighting which could easily get you stabbed several times if the guy was actually resisting. The first cut might make them drop the knife, but they might have also stabbed you by then, and you always control the weapon hand as a matter of principle. Also just generally none of those opponents were trying to resist anything he did, which is usually an indication of something not being very realistic.
      You don't actually need that much skill to kill someone with a knife if you are fast and have a good knowledge of anatomy though, even if they are armed, because any of those later cuts would make you bleed out pretty quickly. So I could definitely believe he killed someone, especially because Spetsnaz and Russian secret police forces like the KGB aren't trained to be MMA fighters (i.e. really good at one on one fighting) they are trained to ambush you or otherwise attack you while you can't fight back through various means. If someone walks up behind you with a knife or garotte and really wants you dead there isn't much you can do about it unless you identify them and act first, once they attack it's too late.

    The knife drills looked reminiscent of systems like kali or escrima -- it's very fluid, and there's drills where you just go back and forth for minutes at a time to build up the flow. It's really interesting, but obviously needs a lot of investment to get good at. There's some great videos on youtube of masters in these systems who are in their OAP years and still kicking ass. My old instructor trained with a lot of these old dudes and learned a lot, but his general advice was always "look for trouble ahead of time, and run if you can".

    I would presume Dikul's lifts were heavy but not nearly as heavy as shown here. Maybe around half of what they show and they must have chosen a particularly thin wobbly bar to enhance the effect.

    Hey man, from Ukraine here. I think the Old Man from 13.26 was actually exposed with using fake weights. He was some sort of circus performer and is quite strong (no arguing here), he also has his own clinic for helping people with spine injuries (god bless him) but people did a review on those weights and the way the plates & bar behave is fucking weird.
    Now in addition to all of that, most of the people here are not commercial gym guys. Lots of my friends & I were going to basement gyms with fucking awful air circulation & home made equipment. What we had was posters of Arnold and some old school guys that did power lifting in the USSR, they would actually train people. The smell was awful, we had some shitty cassette players, no fancy nutrition - I mean, guys would literally buy sacks of sugar, eat it with a spoon, and then have some tap water on top to get calories in. Gainers? No fuckin' way.
    Instead of using some kind of fancy equipment for deadlift (like hooks or these "hand-grip-belts), people would make them at home from some old leather belts or car towing cable :D fuckin' good old days of rusty equipment and sweaty ass old guys that benched 150-200kg on sugar, water, and some danabol :D

    I love when Alexey slams that guys arm down and just walks away. I don’t even think the match was started officially. And hell yes Pantera is the shi***!!! Dimebag was my favorite guitar player.

    The blood letting thing is real. if your hematocrit gets to high its the fastest way to lower it. might lower BP but your body will fill back to the same blood volume really quickly it will just have less red blood cells aka be thinner.

      It can actually skyrocket your BP depending on your hormonal response. My BP after donating blood was 190/120 first two times I did it. Body recognizes lower blood volume circulation and tries to to put fight against it through hormonal response.
