As many already pointed out, the expansion doesn't look bad adds some interesting stuff without making it more hard to play, but not for the price. I had bigger hopes for the heavy rain something that could add to the other maps.
Glad I’ve waited before getting this expansion. Thanks for covering this and giving an honest opinion, I would agree it’s disappointing for the price vs content. And PLEASE include the sticker in the next expansion, that’s crazy how they haven’t. No way would I use a sharpy and do it myself. Disappointing there’s not much new map/game rules with this. Be great to have seen more rules or effects for the bridge and wet road surface tbh.
I use flat transparent light blue fiches for rain on the tracks. Works perfectly and you can customize the corners of every track if you want (especially the ones after a fast section).
Heat is the most popular game at our regular game nights and we play at a higher player count. We don’t feel that it outstays its welcome. Players of varying abilities enjoys the game. So, we may add a 7th player. It is disappointing that they didn’t add an 8th player. Japan map looks far more interesting than Mexico since it has the heavy rain feature. Probably won’t rush into a purchase because of the cost for what you get. Thanks for your honest review!
This is an excellent expansion. The rules are very easy to add on which keeps the game easy to play. There are two new challenges; to drive two corners in one turn and how to deal with the gears in the soaked part of the road. Nothing overly hard as it fits an easy game as HEAT. The super cooling cards are “super cool”. It is an expensive expansion yes, but what is to expect from Days of Wonders. You really don’t need the expansion as a casual gamer, but as a fan of the HEAT it is probably a must-buy. And to have a board game to play with seven hopefully soon eight players is absolutely fantastic.
It sucks you don’t get a chance to play with upgrades much, that’s the best way to play. Also adding weather and all that really makes each game unique. But I understand not doing it with new people.

These expansion reviews are the best. Suggest also adding a section where you recommend how to incorporate then like you did with Abyss. Subscribed. Thanks. 🎉
I agree 7-8 players are madness. I'm surprised you favour Heat at solo or low player counts though, imo the game is by far best at 5-6 human players, I would play it at 4 players, at anything lower I'd rather just play something else. The problem is the Legends are fine filler for those want to play at lower player counts, but you outgrow them very fast to the point they're just a waste of time once you are beating them easily. The actual gaming experience I think is best by far with 5-6 players on the grid, and providing everyone knows what they're doing it should only take about an hour to play 6 player Heat (maybe a little longer for Italy and I presume Mexico too). Albeit if you're playing with new players, I can understand why you're getting this impression. Personally, I would never play without the upgrades, I think the game gets old fast without them, most of the meat of the game is in the upgrade cards. I haven't actually played the expansion yet, but you mention about the new chicanes being two corners back to back, but isn't the whole point that optimally you want to take them 1 in move and will gain a significant advantage in doing so. I actually quite like this on a track like Mexico as it sort of balances between where do you want to be strong, on the straights, or the corners.
Never found the Legends to be super easy, they can provide a decent enough challenge. And new players to the game will be the easiest enemies to beat sometimes as they can fall behind or spin out and thus never recover. The Mexico map doesn't have the largest impact though. Taking a chicane at 7 speed is the easiest task on the planet.
@@TheBrokenMeeple If you are playing mostly basic game that's probably why. They are pretty to easy to beat once using upgrades. To clear the chicanes in 1 move at the speed limit though don't you have to be right up in the space before the corner the turn before, which isn't necessarily easy to setup perfectly, the further back you are the heat cost to do so is going up exponentially as you're having to pay double effectively to do so. I haven't played the new tracks yet, so can't comment from experience, but it feels a big part of those tracks is going to be about being efficient in the corners, and of course upgrades (with corner modifiers) will be good on them.
Thanks for the review. I find the music distracting and would prefer not to have background music owhy you are talking. This may be my issue but thought you may appreciate my honest opinion👍
Thanks for the honest review. I don't need the higher player counts so I think I will pass on this. That thing about asking gamers to draw on the map for the new rule mod is just ridiculous. Hope DoW rethinks that one.
Tokens mean you don't have to permanently alter the board in any way, I like this. In one of the pandemic expansions (dunno the exact name but it included a bio therorist) the publishers included both a sticker and a card that could be placed on the board, so you either stuck the sticker permanently or placed down the card on the board whenever using the expansion.
Japan map & car upgrades (for variability) are what I'd use, if I remember Concordia maps were about £12-14, and 10 cards should be about £4, I guess. so value to me and many other players is about £19.95 as a suitable price point. I may well give this a miss & see what the next expansion offers.
@@monkeylite2 Thank you. I noticed on the new expansion that there are 12 car spots at the starting line. Hope this is something they address in future expansions. Seems that they will have to make new legend cards at some point.
Possibly. They might decide that there is never any need to have more than 6 AI cars (I don't really feel like I would want to push more than that around the track)@@jlminks9800
hi there, I'm personally taking this expansion for 2 things : 1) having 6 IA on the track while i'm playing solo (also being 7 players on multiplayers can be cool aswell) 2) Have 2 more tracks to make a longer championship (i personnaly do not use the sponsoring stuff) (i'm just using the meteo and draft some cards before the race) Overall, i'll have to figure out how the IA is doing with those chicanes and see if i allow them to pass them or just being blocked by every of them... AND THERE IS NO WAY I'M DRAWING ANYTHING ON MY BOARDS :D I wish they'll bring an other expansion next year to get 2 more tracks and the final 8th car (as there's still one room for a car / gear token in the basegame box) And why not, perhaps, some sort of Paddocks system where you can get back some heat from your discard pile back to your engine but paying the cost of losing a bit of time along the way as it is the case in normal grand prix. Would be great ! cheers from belgium !
The fact they didn't include stickers at that price is odd. I mean... I also find it odd that it didn't have an 8th racer. Unfortunately, I am still going to get it, as my group absolutely loves this game. One of the few games I play solo as well. The base game is such an incredible value... So, I guess they have to nickel and dime us elsewhere.
I too mainly play with new players and get stuck with the base game a lot. I would love to play garage module more. Saying that, this is a nice to have expansion, but not a must. The designers have many expansions planned with different aspects (tunnels coming up), so you can pick which ones you want, and which colors you want. I won’t play with 7 humans, but 7 legends may be nice.
@@DanielSultana7 other legends yes, but you could play with 6 legends in this expansion if you play orange. Hopefully the next expansion comes with updated legends cards.
As with the Flamme Rouge expansions, they have concentrated on things that don't add much rules overhead, while at the same time shaking it up a little. The weather in the base game already adds a huge amount of variety.
The new tracks have 12 starting positions, and 12 spaces on the "podium". Didn't know about the team mode, going up to 12 cars for team mode makes sense then, so you could have 6 teams of two cars each. Guess you could have dark and light colors for teams such as: Black & Grey, Red & Pink, Blue & Cyan, Brown & Orange, Mustard and Yellow, Green and Turquoise
You can already play some type o teams with two copies of the game... Not saying you should buy two copies but it's fairly easy for some game groups to have multiple copies of a game... We have three in or group, and one time we did a three table races withe the best two of each table to go to the next race as a two races competition
Aren't expansions always more expensive than the base game when you compare what you get for the price, because production cost is higher because they produce less units because the demand i slower. To compare the price to the base came is not a fair comparision.
Let's also not forget that if you want to play a solo game with using all 7 cars you're forced to play with orange because there were no legends cards to include it and the mew map board doesn't fit in the box as well. I was disappointed with this expansion personally
It’s called heavy rain and it doesn’t even have weather tiles? I haven’t looked at them but I would have expected one tile that made heavy rain rules effect an area of the track on other maps would be in here at least. I assume I’m missing something.
You aren't missing much with the advanced cards module. I think it really makes the game lopsided instead of how clean and tactical it is in the base game.
I'm not that impressed by this expansion at the moment. I love Heat but I'm not clamoring to play a 7 player game. I was hoping they were going to shore up the weather tokens with this expansion since they did call it Heavy Rain. That's one of the more interesting elements that makes the game different from game to game is seeing how the weather is going to effect driving conditions. They could have just provided wet track weather tokens, then you could have played rain rules on every track instead of just Japan. They could have beefed up the Championship series cards a bit instead of just providing a few cards. Another little module like the media corners would have been a nice touch. Maybe some other way to get those sponsorship cards.
/s: yeah DoW struggled with very poor sales for Heat so they couldn;t justify the budget for a single tiny sticker sheet for this exp... #rolleyes ... asking customers to deface their maps is disgraceful, I agree
I appreciate you critical approach, but jeez, regarding lap count, "houseruling" an easy rule you got wrong in the first place is less ideal. But I agree, to justify its price it should have the 8th player or 2 more tracks.
A new Legends deck isn't needed because you can either just play as the orange car or substitute whatever colour car you're playing as for the orange car from the Legends deck.
Doesn't sound like a priority to me. I like to use basic garage modules even for teaching games, but buying all that for sort of one map and a few more modules doesn't sound worth it.
And there is a new scorepad.. that's the old one in black n white (to avoid the problem with the new color), but they forgot to add the seventh space 😅 It's such a lame work..
I love this game. But this does sound underwhelming. My biggest complaint of the game is the maps. This is why i keep going back to Rallyman gt, the ability to make the tracks is a great deal of fun. And always keeps it interesting
There is so little contents in the expansion…lucky I didn’t go preorder following the hype. Honestly seeing the review I don’t even feel there is much added stuff.
Just caught this today. You don't use the garage with new players? My 9 and 7 year olds don't play a ton of board games but they grasped the Garage Module from the first time we played. Are there really people teaching adults that have a hard time reading a few icons? Genuinely wondering as I don't view either of my children to be wildly advanced. EDIT* My kids, the Mrs and my father and mother in law played today in Italia and we finished in 45 minutes. I'm not sure again what kind of group you have but other than Marvel Legendary the in laws don't really play anything. Given the demand for higher player counts I would say I am in the norm and yall are in the minority?
You'd be surprised how many adults take forever deciding what to do with 4 speed cards to play. I'm using it more and more now though because........well I want to use it! :P
Id really like more maps and cars (especially for AI cars) But this expansion seems really disappointing. Expansions are only really expansions if they expand the base game as well though, so the fact that the base game is not changed (without vandalising your own boards) Is also pretty bad... Big bummer for me as im a huge fan of HEAT
Pretty underwhelming for a game that I already thought was just fine. Happy to be able skip it, it will say I was hoping for something more interesting to get me excited about this game everyone else seems to froth over.
Really should have been players 7 and 8 OR more content to justify the price OR lower the price. Too expensive EDIT: also really disappointed that there are no rules or tiles/sockets to adding rain tiles to other maps apart from Japan.
Your review was good until the scoring of 7. After all the things you pointed out? For a lazy and cash grab expansion? Almost at the cost of a new game? If someone skip the video to the score, will be deceived.
It's not the best of values but cash grab is a stretch. Dune Uprising is a cash grab. Everdell Farshore is a cash grab. Even Wyrmspan to some degree is a cash grab. And as I mentioned, yes the cost isn't great, hence it loses points for that. But the maps are still decent and people still want 7th player components. Maybe it could be a 6/10, that can be argued, but no lower than that.
@@TheBrokenMeeple Fair enough on both points. I just don´t like the industry these days. Almost every expansion feels overpriced, is really hard for me get one when I realise with that money I just can buy another fresh game. I called a "cash grab" because just like you said, probably they will launch another expansion and add a 8th player, when they could perfectly do it in this expansion. But thats my point of view, "regardless of the consequences" :)
@@TheBrokenMeeple It seems to me it's basically an expansion you can basically tell if you want it from the contents. You want more tracks or a 7th player, you want this. You're happy with what's in the base box, and aren't clamouring for more tracks, then don't bother. And the answer to that ultimately probably comes down to how much you play as the base box has a lot of content to begin with.
Ow luke, they are going to milk this for all its worth. Notice there are no 12 spots for finish on the map instead of 8. There are at least 5 more overpriced expansions coming lol
@@TheBrokenMeeple taking advantage of gamers tendencies to be completionists.. "how less can I put into the box and still get away with it. How much can I ask for this and get away with it?".
I mean it's just going to be their new Ticket to Ride where they release a new expansion every year. I don't really have a problem with it though, people who play it lots will probably want as many tracks as they can hold of, and those that don't probably never need to touch an expansion.
Not only is this putting me off buying the expansion but I'm also now reluctant in buying the base game. I've played it; it's fun but not fun enough to be bent over by Days of Wonder.
It's called "Heavy Rain," and there's next to nothing to do with weather. Not a single new weather card and just one board with standing water. Theres no way to use Orange Player as AI because there's no new AI cards. So, 60 cards, 2 maps, 1 car, 1 gear, and 1 player mat for $40... doesn't seem worth it. Come on, Days of Wonder... you can do better than that. Phhhhh draw on my board... Really that's just F-ing stupid !

I appreciate you critical approach, but jeez, regarding lap count, "houseruling" an easy rule you got wrong in the first place is less ideal. But I agree, to justify its price it should have the 8th player or 2 more tracks.
Hm… That’s odd… No new scorepad or new legend cards? I can make my own system for that, I suppose, but that’s really surprising to me…
A new Legends deck isn't needed because you can either just play as the orange car or substitute whatever colour car you're playing as for the orange car from the Legends deck.
@@ozza000 I agree, it just seems like a pretty cheap solution. It surprised me, coming from DoW.
There is a scorepad, but I think it still gets the number of cars wrong on it.
Doesn't sound like a priority to me. I like to use basic garage modules even for teaching games, but buying all that for sort of one map and a few more modules doesn't sound worth it.
Totally agree!
And there is a new scorepad.. that's the old one in black n white (to avoid the problem with the new color), but they forgot to add the seventh space 😅
It's such a lame work..
I did wonder what that scorepad was all about, I didn't even notice that!! That's bonkers!
I love this game. But this does sound underwhelming. My biggest complaint of the game is the maps. This is why i keep going back to Rallyman gt, the ability to make the tracks is a great deal of fun. And always keeps it interesting
I just found Rallyman's mechanics fiddly - the stuff you do with those dice or whatever on the track.
There is so little contents in the expansion…lucky I didn’t go preorder following the hype.
Honestly seeing the review I don’t even feel there is much added stuff.
So definitly not an essential, i'll stick to the base game then. Thanks for this review.
Id really like more maps and cars (especially for AI cars)
But this expansion seems really disappointing.
Expansions are only really expansions if they expand the base game as well though, so the fact that the base game is not changed (without vandalising your own boards) Is also pretty bad...
Big bummer for me as im a huge fan of HEAT
Yep, i love the addition to the base game. However, it doesn't worth 27 pounds alike...
I draw on my games all the time. 😀
Pretty underwhelming for a game that I already thought was just fine. Happy to be able skip it, it will say I was hoping for something more interesting to get me excited about this game everyone else seems to froth over.
Really should have been players 7 and 8 OR more content to justify the price OR lower the price. Too expensive
EDIT: also really disappointed that there are no rules or tiles/sockets to adding rain tiles to other maps apart from Japan.
A token maybe? No drawing.
I know right?
Also if people skip to the score and don't watch the video for context, well than that's their own fault.
@@sousatta And all good views 😁👌
@@TheBrokenMeeple It seems to me it's basically an expansion you can basically tell if you want it from the contents. You want more tracks or a 7th player, you want this. You're happy with what's in the base box, and aren't clamouring for more tracks, then don't bother. And the answer to that ultimately probably comes down to how much you play as the base box has a lot of content to begin with.
I like how the harshest critics can't bring themselves to give reviewed products anything lower than a 7/10 rating
Have you seen some of my reviews lately? Check out Mythwind and Septima.... 😉
@@TheBrokenMeeple I'm sure you are capable of giving lower scores, I was just shocked how much the good outweighed the bad for you in this expansion 😅
Ow luke, they are going to milk this for all its worth. Notice there are no 12 spots for finish on the map instead of 8. There are at least 5 more overpriced expansions coming lol
Sad thing is, you're likely right on that!
Meh!
Price value is pretty bad.
@TheBrokenMeeple too bad. I really expected way more.
