I voted remain because I was concerned about potential future wars. I explained this to an ex friend. She said "there won't be any more wars." I knew the "savings" from leaving the EU would not be spent on the NHS; it was obvious defence spending would need to increase.
There were no savings. Brexit has led to a 40 billion reduction in government revenue (because of a 100-150 billion reduction in the size of the economy). So there's less money to spend. We also need to spend tens of billions on new paperwork (split between government and private sector). Immigration needs to be higher (because it's a less efficient kind of immigration) and costs more. And that's without even talking about the loss of personal rights and freedoms.

That means that a treaty with an autocratic nation isn't worth the paper it is printed on. Most of the progress since WW2 has come on the foundation of binding international legal systems that make treaties more reliable. Without that, you can't build big, reliable alliances like NATO or the EU. That would not be a complete disaster for very large countries, like the US, China, India and Russia, but it would be for smaller countries, including the UK.
