@darinherrick9224 The only problem I ever hear about those things is that. If it isn't I high quality reproduction that it can possibly strain the laser. I do have a couple box sets from PCE works myself.
2:18 1000% agree with Try here. I will never understand people with original hardware and games who look down on people who emulate games when emulation has a multitude of advantages just like original hardware and software do. As someone who played games since I was 4 years old and am now in my 40s, life goes by in the blink of an eye, y'all. Just play games and have fun.
Not gonna lie, I was initially quite disappointed at the lack of detailed adjustments allowed in the Pocket OS & subsequent hardware. I absolutely love the customization ability of previous systems & it's a shame that an advanced menu or something wasn't included in the new OS they are using to allow for more granular adjustments. Also, not having a feature to increase sprites per scanline is a real head scratcher for this system in particular. Every Analogue console has had this feature and this is probably THE system that would benefit from it the most, as many games have pretty severe sprite flicker.
Really hoping analogue can do some magic with the OS via firmware updates. Got it for the supergrafx and cd support as I just have the japanese pc engine.
This is one of the best reviews for the Duo. I really want one but only have 4 games. I'm not sure yet about diving in with an everdrive or other methods. Thanks for your hard work guys!
Great video! From an audio perspective I think both MiSTer and the Duo could stand to have a little bit of a low-pass filter, at least in the recording with your video. MiSTer makes this easy because it ships with a ton of presets.
Awesome video as always and wow what happened to the colour of the “white” model, thanks for highlighting that. It’s a shame there isn’t at least a 1440p mode akin to the tink 5x and mister as this stage as a minimum but as you said the display filters do look nice.
I was initially interested in this to replace my Duo-R and play my collection in my crt setup. This would have been more appealing than getting my Duo-R RGB modded as I could have that corrected composite colour pallette. It would have been best of both worlds but the lack of support for the DAC atm, OS disappointments , and overall jankiness is enough to keep me away for the moment.
The Turbografx was my childhood - when all my friends had sega and nintendo consoles - I was the one weirdo with a Turbo lol. Honestly though, it was absolutely amazing. I loved everything about it! My preorder will be here this week and I can't wait to play through these games again! As always, such an absolutely amazing video. You guys do great work and I love your channel!
The controller port on the side near the back of the console is the deal breaker for me as I don't want to be forced to use 8bitdo wireless controllers. Glad this exists for those that want one though.
While it is disappointing to see all the shortcomings from the Duo (especially compared to practically all of their previous systems), I'm glad to see it still works perfectly well for playing the games, which is what matters the most. Hopefully future updates will fix the issues and give us all the features we are used to from Analogue stuff. As someone who has never owned anything from PCE and currently just has a Turbo Everdrive, an 8BD controller, and a pile of CD-Rs, it looks like the Duo is my perfect entry to the PCE scene.
@liamconverse8950 dude wtf is wrong with you chill out. Hell I have ALOT of TurboGrafx-16 games and a handful of PC-ENGINE games. The TurboGrafx-16 was my first console, why the hell do you reply to someone's comment with 'gtfo' your acting like this dude was after you. Seriously what's wrong with everyone?
Had this thing come out before the Tink 4K there would be no complaints. A $750 scaler has basically spoiled a lot of these retro channels. Never mind that the Tink costs 3 times as much as this whole system- they’ve been spoiled by a world class scaler. :)
@@liamconverse8950it is and it is not. Sharp pixels look best on fixed pixel displays if they are scaled up to the display resolution. 1080p on a 1080p screen looks great but on a.4k screen the same image needs to be 4k to look just as good. We basically buy new tvs and make out old stuff look worse, so we buy new scaler to return to the status quo.
Seems the elitists got a bit upset by the comment, in this episode, that FPGA is emulation. FPGA is just hardware-level emulation by programming chips directly to emulate hardware functions instead of relying on software to do it. As a fellow FPGA user, I found this out a long time ago. But sure, call it simulation instead, if it makes you feel less insecure about it.
Great video, as always! Your reviews are always the ones I look forward to the most for new products like this. I loved the Mega SG and Super NT and excitedly pre-ordered this console as soon as it became available. I must say I do feel slightly disappointed seeing the reviews so far. The other consoles felt like elegantly designed, premium products, where as this isn't quite coming across the same. Save states and composite palette are nice features and hopefully some of the glitches can be fixed with updates. That interface is incredibly ugly! Might've been okay on a small pocket screen, but not on my 55" TV!
I loved how the dog was about to make that DAC a chew toy! As a kid, I wish I had the TG-16. I had a NES and a PC (hand-me-down) so my parents didn't feel that I needed another game system. I did get a GameBoy but never the much-drooled-over SNES. I am fascinated by the Duo but at the same time, I'm not ready to shell out that kinda cash on PCE games and getting a Duo and an Everdrive seems pointless. My Analogue Pocket should be here today. I'll be seeing how well it handles PCE ROMs. I would actually love for the TG-16 to be a console on Nintendo Switch Online.
I feel like a lot of the criticisms of this and these kinds of systems in general are just tangentially based. I am just stoked to be able to play all of my old PC Engine CD games without an Arcade card, correct controller, memory bank, etc. I have never once been bummed there isn't a spinning Turbo CD logo on a loading screen, or cared at all about an "aperture grille" or these extremely niche categories... And oh, "no save states!" Wahhhhhhhh!!!!!! 😢😢😢 99% of the people who will buy, and use one of these, I am sure agree. It's a great way to play the official old games many of us have easily on modern displays. Sometimes I feel like people just need to turn a game on, and enjoy it. And not freak out of the most miniscule of details. We grew up on composite. This system is like the luxury beach resort of easily re-experiencing old tech. Plug and play. Done.
I wanna get an Analog urge Duo and start getting TurboGrafx/PC Engine titles. Because the Analogue Duo can play pretty much the whole pantheon down to the PC FX
People who have never tried the turbografx and pc engine arent gonna have any cd or hu card games, this should have been made to be more easily compatible with the turbo everdrive.
As much as i appreciate Analogue's efforts, I'm glad that I resisted the urge to preorder the Duo, because it really isn't something for me. I am glad to see CD support being implemented in one of their devices tho and look forward to see what they do with the 32bit era of consoles.
Can't beat the blur free motion clarity, zero latency, affordability and authenticity of a good late 90's Sony Trinitron CRT, or 2005 Sony Wega. :D Pairing an Analogue Duo with something like a 32" QD-OLED(2024 Samsung G8), imo, still won't cut it in the motion clarity and latency department. QD-OLED Black frame insertion may cut down 50% of motion blur, but BFI typically doubles or possibly triples input lag, and even then there's still 50% more motion blur than a CRT. On the flip side, with QD-OLED, You gain true blacks, amazing brightness, whiter whites, 720p-4K if that's what you want for older games, a thin panel, they weigh a lot less, they're new and readily available...But ultimately, the motion blur & Latency basically ruin it all for me. We all have our preferences though at the end of day. Still a cool modern-esque option regardless! At this point, instead, I'll be getting a PC Engine Duo-R(with a region Switch mod), and just hooking that up to my 27" Sony Trinitron CRT.
Great to hear that CD games are in deed supported using the Turbo Everdrive Pro. Most people were saying that it would not be possible because of the CD Drive. But sounds like that is only an issue when rebooting the system using the Duos menu
Gotta say this obsession with 4K is hilarious to me. I want 16 bit graphics...so I can upscale them to 4K!!! Are you kidding me? But wait, no!!! I want scanlines over it in glorious 4K!!! ... Uhhhh
Yeah, I agree. Even on a CRT, the pixels aren't showing up 4K sharp. Unless they're going for ultra expensive PVM sharpness. But I'm not that über obsessed with such things, compared to the enthusiasts. I'm fine with 720p or 1080p.
Could not agree more on your analysis on Analogue OS! It feels like a downgrade, not an upgrade. & this stuff DOES matter Coury, it does matter! It is perfectly fine for the Pocket, but on the Duo I would have ABSOLUTELY preferred something more along the lines of what they have done with previous systems. I like the style & flexibility of those menus much more than this. Again, this feels like a downgrade, not an upgrade. (You're not just "Some guy" either Coury. You are clearly an experienced, knowledgeable fan & are the sort of person Analogue should actually be listening to.)
Speaking of Lag, how freaking COOL would it be if someone made a set of passthru controller cables with a simple LED connected in line with them for lag testing? Aka basically just a passthru cable with an LED that lights up whenever a button press is registered. Could have such cables for almost every retro controller plug type & would just be HUGELY helpful vs having to do an LED light mod to every controller for every system you want to test! Could even do this with a lineup of extension cables but have the LED light on the Female end.
I'd love to buy an Analogue console, I've repeatedly checked their online shop to buy a Sega Mega Drive Analogue system and a Pocket, and I would start with a Duo, but they never seem to be in bloody stock, and imo, if something isn't readily available for purchases, it may as well be considered non-existent.
@@Wobble2007 I've always said, Analogue makes the absolute best _theoretical_ consoles. I only ordered one because this is the cheapest and most reliable way to play my actual CD games. Good to see it will work well with them, though I'll realistically stick with a CoreGrafx, Everdrive, and EDFX combo and keep the games on the shelf after testing them all.
@@paulcanniff4308 Fancy little RGB board that's plug and play with the Turbografx. Made by Krikzz who also makes Everdrives. It's not too expensive, so I definitely recommend checking it out if you want a quality signal from a PC Engine/Turbografx.
Man, I really hope they update that interface. Crazy that there's no DAC support out of the box either. I wonder if they are waiting to drop it when they add it to their Pocket dock? @darinherrick9224 The only problem I ever hear about those things is that. If it isn't I high quality reproduction that it can possibly strain the laser. I do have a couple box sets from PCE works myself.
Just get yourself a Turbo Duo mini
First thing I'm going to do is turn on that RGB palette 🟥🟩🟦
I'm commander Shepard, and this is my favourite retro gaming channel on TH-cam.
Between this and the Retrotink 4K, it's been a really amazing week for nerd stuff. I've got both on order, so I'm a pretty happy dude these days.
I think I read somewhere that there’s some homebrew SuperGrafx CD games, it would be interesting if it works on the Duo.
My Duo is currently in transit, can't wait!!
Awesome video as always and wow what happened to the colour of the “white” model, thanks for highlighting that. It’s a shame there isn’t at least a 1440p mode akin to the tink 5x and mister as this stage as a minimum but as you said the display filters do look nice.
I suspect cream was used to try and offset any yellowing. Personally, I would have preferred Analogue to have used the off-blue of the Duo-RX instead.
Love your videos.. you guys always deliver. Thank you!
Guys, this channel is simply wonderful! you are the best! congratulations!! Big hug from the Brazilian retrogamer community!
You guys do great work and I love your channel!
y'all are on a roll!! the past two RGB 300 vids have risen the bar! ❤
GTFO virtually nobody has these games and they're very hard to come by they should have made it so you could play ROMs off on SD card
@@sage11x I find it hard to believe that playing 16-bit games at 4k is actually an improvement
Got my duo today! I updated the console before running anything. So far everything is working great.
two videos in almost only one week apart? you made my day!
I didn't realize that the PCE Mini bonus games had been ripped!
They are mostly just color pallette changes, I really hoped the frequent slowdown in Gradius was fixed, but there are no performance improvements.
Thanks for the entertainment this past year 😎👍
Hope you had a good🎄🎄 holiday, and here's to a great 2024! 🎇😎👍✌️
I knew MLiG was going to tackle the Duo, seeing as how Game Sack, Metal Jesus Rocks, and Jeremy Parish, among others, covered it earlier today.
They were all sent review units at the same time, the embargo was lifted today.
Oh snap! They finished the Tengai Makyou translation??? I'm off to grab that.
My Duo should be here in a few days.
Glad they think of hardware preservation too. I look forward when (if) they release analogue consoles fór 2000s hardware.
You have got to be KIDDING they didn’t anticipate people using everdrives?? That is an egregious oversight. Wow
Good concept.
Since it's already has the CD drive, I'll recommend the latest version of the regular Turbo Everdrive...
The dog at 15:07 LOL
I love this video. It’s so relaxing and I get very excited about this console and the games.
Thank you
Awesome overview guys! Can’t wait for mine to arrive!
99% of the people who will buy, and use one of these, I am sure agree.
It is exteremely weird that the they didnt consider making a bit more space for the everdrive to fit in normally.
Wow what a Mega test 👍👍
Best ever😊
I miss the master game gunheat at sound test.
Thx
Been a PCEngine owner and fan for many years, this modern release and your video are both very cool to see in 2023 😎👍.
Now this is the video I've been waiting for :)
There’s nothing more satisfying than plugging in a retro game cartridge.
I never do this but… FIRST! My Duo is on the way so eager to see your in-depth look as always. Edit: Ok maybe not first but close enough 😆
Too bad you weren't first. @8bitbros comment was first.
This is pretty cool, now do this with 32x/Genesis/Sega CD 😮
I've always wanted a combo in one system like that. Analogue coming out with that would rule.
This should be made
I love MLIG. I've learned so much from you wizards.
HOO NELLY, this gonna be good!
Great to hear that CD games are in deed supported using the Turbo Everdrive Pro. Most people were saying that it would not be possible because of the CD Drive. But sounds like that is only an issue when rebooting the system using the Duos menu
So glad to hear this! Thanks.
@@Svante It's not about the graphics, it's just headroom for the effects you apply TO the graphics. Filters, and non-integer scaling, namely.
I’m perfectly happy with the turbo games I have on my WiiU via virtual console
I've been waiting for this! Another great analysis!
I was about to preorder this but after this review I’m not so sure now 😅
Did the dog eat your anolog Dac 😂 great video guys!
Yeah. The shit that came out had scanlines in it too.
Watching this video on my phone during the audio comparison: “they’re the same sound” 😂
Even the Analogue system reviews are a shout out to the RetroTINK 4K.
It’s so great to see you guys again
I'd love to buy an Analogue console, I've repeatedly checked their online shop to buy a Sega Mega Drive Analogue system and a Pocket, and I would start with a Duo, but they never seem to be in bloody stock, and imo, if something isn't readily available for purchases, it may as well be considered non-existent.
The Mega SG and Super NT are both EOL, the only way you'll be able to buy one of those is second hand market
@@joesaiditstrue Which makes it irrelevant imo.
@@Wobble2007They were available for years, you had the chance.
@@Wobble2007 I've always said, Analogue makes the absolute best _theoretical_ consoles.
It's such a crappy thing to do -- to go to all the trouble of developing these things, and then nonchalantly abandoning them -- that I've written their product line off completely. Release whatever you'd like. Don't care. This isn't "preservation," they're not contributing anything to the community. It's just a FOMO trigger, then cash out, and move on. Nobody needs that.
I really like my pc engine duo alot which i bought back in july 5 of this year for $186 for the system only and then had the system to be like new (refurbished) i usually use the av to hdmi converter thing to play the pc engine duo on 16:9 aspect ratio i dont have any issues on the thing i also have akumajou dracula rondo of blood which i got from a trade back in September of this year the pc engine duo is a real awesome system to have. Best regards Nikita.K
Awesomeness video please do more thanks and merry Christmas ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
That front loading disc drive, is a terrible idea. If a disc get stuck in there, you have to take it all apart.
I recently picked up a really nice DUO R. (TG16/CD died 😢) Forgot how awesome the NEC systems are
Metal Jesus video on this hardware has completely missed the mark imo... unlike this one. 😎👍
A new RGB! It's an Xmas miracle
I only ordered one because this is the cheapest and most reliable way to play my actual CD games. Good to see it will work well with them, though I'll realistically stick with a CoreGrafx, Everdrive, and EDFX combo and keep the games on the shelf after testing them all.
what's EDFX?
@@paulcanniff4308 Fancy little RGB board that's plug and play with the Turbografx. Made by Krikzz who also makes Everdrives. It's not too expensive, so I definitely recommend checking it out if you want a quality signal from a PC Engine/Turbografx.
Man, I really hope they update that interface. Crazy that there's no DAC support out of the box either. I wonder if they are waiting to drop it when they add it to their Pocket dock? Either way it seems solid enough. I think I might be screwed when I get mine though because I have one of the earlier Everdrives. I don't think it's a 2.0. I guess I'll find out when I get it.
A wildly useful console for people who have quite a few games for it. I don't... so I can't justify the price. I am hoping the Analogue N64 fpga is going to be as good. This is a great piece of kit, of course. :)
While I respect Try’s opening rant, let’s all agree that there will be no quarter for those retro gaming Philistines who stretch a 4:3 image onto their 16:9 widescreen TV. They ARE “less smart” than me😂
@22:20 I have TED v2.5 and the duo will launch it but the ED will say that NO FAT SYSTEM is found. I can pop it into the TG16 though and it works just fine.
This channel always deliver 😊!
Best retro channel, just saying. Thanks MLiG.
