    Nice review. Bought a 2020 Atomic Silver in early Jan. Yes, it's dated, but it's its old school charm that makes it special. Plus, unlike cross-overs, it rides like a truck and although I won't go muddin' in it, it surely feels like it's capable of going just about anywhere.

    Until last week, I was driving a 2019 Lexus RX360 F Sport. But I needed something bigger so I bought a 2020 GX460 in the Nebula Gray, with the Rioja Red interior. I wish the GX had a little bit more updated features like my 2019 RX, but I love it! Thanks for the review! I’m in Louisiana; send snow my way😂

      Kirk Kreifels Thanks, Kirk! I am still in the break in period, and I’m trying to get used to the heavy feel of this truck. Coming from an RX, this GX is a beast! I’m a transplant from Michigan, and my folks live just down the road from you (in Bellevue), so I’m a little familiar with the snow and really wish we had some down here! Happy Thanksgiving and look forward to more reviews from you!

    The 2021 should be even quieter. They added front side acoustic glass to the GX. I emailed Lexus corporate and I heard back that this is a brand new “feature.” It was not available prior to the 2021. In case anyone likes bank vault library cabins and is deciding between a 2020 and 2021.

    Love the GX! Gotta really know its Prado roots and its off-road capabilities to really love this truck. It's a Prado in a tuxedo. Drive one everyday and it's perfect for the harsh Canadian winters too! You feel so safe and can rely on it to get you A to B in downpours and blizzards. Great vehicle and sad it might be gone soon. I'm gonna keep driving it until I can get a full electric Lexus SUV. :)

    Kirk, after owning 2 GX’s, I would like to offer some customer feedback to Lexus - if they are listening. 3 areas for improvement.
    1. Change from engine driven radiator fan to electric fans. I know there’s a reliability/durability perception to this but having that fan roaring like a garbage truck every time you start the engine or accelerate from a stop takes away from the jewel like quality of the rest of the vehicle. It was also an issue every morning when leaving for work at 5 am and waking the kids in the room over the garage when I started it. I imagine the engine driven fan reduces fuel economy and engine power slightly when first accelerating - more than electric fans would. This was also an issue in my 4Runner.
    2. Braking. The brakes would haul the GX to a stop quickly, but unless you held both feet on the brake pedal with all your strength while stopped - the vehicle would go right on ahead and move forward. It came to the point where I had to put the GX’s in Neutral at stop lights, and maneuvering into the garage for the last foot or so always caused anxiety because you never knew when it would slip forward, or the engine fan would engage and burst forward. This was also an issue on my 2007 Tacoma, and 2018 4Runner. Doesn’t happen when they’re brand new, but does after a few thousand miles. I know this isn’t an isolated issue, when I cornered a service writer at my Lexus dealer they admitted a few people had mentioned it. It’s why I got rid of them and bought a Volvo. If Lexus would fix this issue - I would buy another GX.
    3) Sound deadening in the roof and rear of the vehicle. Maybe a layer of sheet rubber on the inside of the metal. Rain hitting the roof was surprisingly loud. Road noise up front was quite low, but I did sense some coming from the rear. Otherwise the vehicle was nicely isolated from traffic and noise.
    Lexus - there’s a market for the GX, please don’t get rid of it in the US. People who live in the outer suburbs/rural areas, or have weekend homes in the woods/mountains where a CUV like an Audi Q7 won’t cut it. The LX is nice, but it’s too wide (big) for people who (for example) work in the city at hospitals and need to use cramped parking garages or have older homes with smaller garages.
    This market would probably be the same folks who would buy an old Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Not the new behemoth coming soon; the older one.
    Please keep the GX in your lineup with some modifications (keep the V8 please) - or make a 4Runner Limited with the 4.6 V8. You’d crush it.

    • @KirkKreifels
      @KirkKreifels  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt, thanks for sharing. I agree with your points... hopefully Lexus keeps the GX and refines it but I'm not entirely hopeful.

    Lexus needs to make up their mind and decide what they want to be. If GX and LX are to be off road vehicles, these designs won’t take you far off road.
    If they are not going to be off road vehicles, no need to have sophisticated, expensive, and super heavy suspensions. The issue they have is they build these on one global platform and don’t adjust them based on the market needs they sell in.
    GX is long overdue for a power train upgrade.

    Kirk, I have been watching your channel and considering the GX and used LX's for some time. I have decided that for my both me and my family's needs the GX is the truck to get. I am really close to moving forward but would really appreciate your help with a couple of last important questions I have.
    /
    What are your impressions of the Lexus NuLuxe seat material...how does it compare to actual leather in terms of feel, durability and “performance”? Will NuLuxe hold up as well over time and feel as “premium” as real leather? Do you like it as well as the analine leather?
    Is the Mark Levinson markedly better than the Premium issued stereo?
    Lastly, do you anticipate or heard of any changes that would make you want to wait for the 2021s (front end, exterior, interior, mechanically, upgraded infotainment)...or would you just go with the 2020? Would you wait?
    Thank you very much Kirk...as always, I am very grateful for your help!

    • @KirkKreifels
      @KirkKreifels  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No changes for 2021. Nuluxe holds up better than. Leather over time and is just as comfy. Most times I can't tell the difference. Mark Levinson is great, but not worth spending $10k more for a luxury package

    I, for one, am glad they added *_EXTRA sound insulation_* to the engine compartment, *_for the 2020 model._* I'm not sure why Toyota won't openly admit this! It would be good for them! For anyone who has their head screwed on properly, this should be abundantly clear!! Either that, or they added a much more powerful muffler!! The 2019 and older models were significantly louder and more unrefined during moderate to high RPMs!
    Kudos to Lexus for doing something that I thought they would NEVER do! But either way, now that they've *_QUIETENED_* the engine and exhaust making the V8 *_QUIET AND CREAMY SMOOTH,_* as it *should* be, this is now going to be the next vehicle I purchase!! Oh, and the RX is a noisy, unrefined POS with a loud, gritty, unrefined V6 (one of the *worst* ). Would not touch that vehicle with a 10 foot barge pole!

    6:49 the door is like that because this Lexus is essentially a tarted up Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, and the Prado is sold with door-mounted spare wheel in just about every version. Toyota must have cheaped out by not offering a different door design for this Lexus version, or at the very very least, hinging it on the correct side for LHD models

  • @Dshzzzt
    @Dshzzzt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Kirk! A few quick questions:
    1. Can you confirm that with the new steering wheel/column (changed to accommodate the updated safety sense stuff) on the 2020 gets a "one touch" turn signal?. I know it's small, but, it annoys the heck out of me with our 2019 that I can't lightly move the stick to signal for lane changes.
    2. I have a tonneau cover, and yeah it's cumbersome. But when it's not being used it's meant to be stowed on the cargo deck where there's a couple of velcro straps, close to the fridge door. But I can't for the life of me figure out how to fold that darn thing for storage. Where can I find documentation on how to stow this? Owners manual isn't really helpful.
    3. Why am I only seeing the switch for the power folding mirrors on the Luxury trim? Our Premium has it, but all the premiums I'm seeing online have the blank where the switch should be.
    Thanks! Keep up the good work.

    • @KirkKreifels
      @KirkKreifels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      New steering wheel was to accommodate the new safety features.
      The blinker doesn't have a three round burst per se. Same blinker functionality as a 2019. As for the taneau cover, I don't have the answer.

    • @KirkKreifels
      @KirkKreifels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I inquired about the headlights seeing as that was the only thing I really wanted out of the 2020, but that plan got shot down real quick. It'd cost me $10.6k for the headlights alone, according to the quote I got from the local dealership. $5,300 per light. Seems a bit steep, but I think part of it might be artificial inflation to keep people from doing exactly what I was trying to do.

    So what is "J120" and "J150?" These are the platform codes for frame design that underpins many of our favorite Toyota off-road toys. The platform originates with the Land Cruiser Prado 120 & 150 sold over seas and is basis for all the following vehicle's frames:
    -2002~2009 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (J120 or sometimes called "Prado 120")
    -2003~2009 Toyota 4Runner (4th gen, J120)

I wonder if they shortened the frame, removed the doors/roof, ruggedized the interior, squared off the body to be the new FJ to slay the new Defender. Jeep Unlimited is a sales success but their build quality is a bit short.

    KREEIIIF!
    I’ve been watching your videos believe me. I’m super far behind. I’ll be going back and commenting my thoughts on most.
    Knew you would do this eventually and always its a KREIFtastic review!
    As you know this is in my top 2 favorite Lexus vehicles. People know what this is and thats why they buy it. Most love that not much has changed, including me. Too much added can give complexity and other issues.... more stuff to go wrong. Which is why I am thrilled it’s the same engine and transmission and almost everything else with modern stuff thats usable and not known to fail (so far), But DAMMIT MAN they could have added the new GEN 10 infotainment so it can have Apple CarPlay, I mean COME ON! I still really want one of these possible after my lease is up on my 19 RAV4 June 2022. But if by then it does not have Apple CarPlay, I’m being honest when I say it’s going to be a dealbreaker. I use it daily and it makes everything I do (Need and want) faster. I utilize the PISS out of it. I can excuse it not being available on a base Kia with no big screen for it, I cannot excuse it on a $55,000 SUV.
    I’m sure you know this but Mark Levinson Soundsystem won’t be needed in this vehicle. When I had that 3 Day test drive with the 19 GX, I found the “base” or standard audio BLEW THE F’ing DOORS OFF my Tesla Model S I had with the upgraded “Ultra High Fidelity Sound System” in every way... I believe that was a $2500 option at the time it was new. It kind of sucked, well so did the rest of the car...but anyway the GX is perfect, but it needs Apple CarPlay, and if I’m really going to be picky, the ass part of the seats in front need to be adjustable (like the Loaded up ES) or longer. They are very short and I feel after a few hours that I would need to get out of it and take a break. Don’t really have that issue with many other cars.

Normally in my other cars, you press it once, it turns off the engine, press it twice then it shuts off the power. I just want to turn off the engine but leave the music on. Is there a setting i can change? i look everywhere and i can't find it. Thanks.

      Probably too late but I bought GX recently. Had the same question, maybe below step helps: 1. Completely stop car in garage, 2. Apply parking brake 3. Shift to N/Neutral 4. Press Start button once and you are in Accessories mode. When you are ready to leave, shift to P/parking and press Start again to shut off the engine.

    Kirk - another great review thank you! Sounded like you preferred some aspects of the pre-2020s over the 2020 (shifter, steering wheel, etc). Not to put you on the spot, but if you were to own/buy a GX would you prefer a 2019 or 2020 . . . and would you recommend the Luxury or the Premium version? How does the Lexus's NuLuxe material compare and hold up compared to Lexus's Analine leather...preference? Lastly, I've been a subscriber for quite some time and know you are fond of the LX...but for a daily driver in city/suburban driving and as the primary family vehicle for family of 4 and Labrador . . . would you prefer the GX or LX? Thank you Kirk!

      Kirk Kreifels thank you very much for your reply Kirk! The Luxury version is a bit of a reach, but then again I do like ramen noodles and spaghetti so you have me thinking. I do wish leather was an option on the Premium version. Kirk, is it possible to special order something like leather or Mark Levinson sound system on a Premium model? Also, I would really appreciate your impression and thoughts on the Lexus NuLuxe seat material...how does it compare to actual leather in terms of feel, durability and “performance” ...does it hold up as well over time and feel as “premium” as real leather? This is important bkz I take extremely good care of my vehicles and plan to keep this vehicle for many, many years (“till the wheels fall off” ). Is the Mark Levinson markedly better than the Premium issued stereo? Lastly, when do the 2021s come out (December-ish?) and do you anticipate or heard of any changes that would make waiting worthwhile (front end, exterior, interior, mechanically, upgraded infotainment)? Thank you very much Kirk...I am very grateful for your help!

      @matth2213 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Questtt3 - I had 2 GX’s, a 2017 and a 2018. Premium with Ecru leather. I can tell you there was a slight difference in the leather quality between the two. The 2017 leather felt more supple, the 2018 leather felt more like a PVC material. It was almost hard to the touch. I especially noticed the difference in the second row seats. The semi-aniline leather on the Luxury model may be much higher quality than the (up-to 2019) Premium Pkg leather - I never sat in a Luxury trim because it was over my budget. In my opinion, for the newer (2020+) models, based on my experience, I would probably say it’s not worth it to spend the extra. just for the leather. Most people probably wouldn’t be able to discern between the two unless you told them. I have a 2019 Volvo XC60 now with the Nuluxe seating material and you honestly wouldn’t notice the difference unless you’ve been in a Volvo with the full leather interior. Volvo leather is buttery soft (and the seats are superb), unlike the leather in either of my GX’s. Vinyl will hold up better with less upkeep. Look at the old MB-Tex on the old Mercedes. That stuff would outlast the car if you kept them wiped down every now and again. The leather would crack after several years unless you really kept after it.
      About the GX sound system; I didn’t have the Mark Levinson system, and I never remember hearing it, but the sound system in both of my GX’s were subpar for me. The sound quality was good, but it sounded like the only speaker working was the big “uni-boob” speaker in the middle of the dash. I actually took it back to the dealer because I thought the other speakers weren’t working, but found out all non- Mark Levinson systems sounded the same. Good news is you can get the Mark Levinson system on the Premium versions for 2021 - you don’t have to get the Lux Pkg (with the higher price). I hope this helps some.

      Also, I want to add, I live in Atlanta where the traffic is truly wretched. The GX is the nicest place to sit in traffic questioning career choices. You’re superbly isolated, the climate control is second to none, and it feels substantial. Plus it’s like a goat off-road. It’s great for us folks that have mountain cabins, you can haul a bunch of stuff, comfy for 4 people, reliability like no other, and very good resale value. It doesn’t really have much direct competition; the only possible competitors would be a Range Rover or a MB G-wagon and they’re $20k + more - and are prone to have reliability issues.

    • @RPGTKingpin
      @RPGTKingpin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I doubt it for one simple reason: You have the 4runner. The rest of the world doesn't. The 4runner and the Prado fill the same niche, so bringing the Prado to the US would only make sense if they discontinue the 4runner, and vice versa for the rest of the world. I disagree with Kirk's reasoning that it's because the GX is present, simply because the powertrain and quality are vastly different between the two. They have the same shell, sure. But the important stuff is different. Prado uses a 4.0 litre V6 and a 5 speed transmission, compared to the GX's 4.6 litre V8 and 6 speed transmission. The insulation in the Prado is nowhere near the level of the GX. The interior material quality is a significant downgrade. About the only spot where they're roughly the same is exterior styling and technology. The only advantages the Prado has over the GX are increased range [primarily due to the optional auxiliary fuel tank] and offroad capability [primarily due to the approach and departure angles].

I love the LX but 2007 was a long time ago. I don't understand why the GX is still using outdated nav tech, or why Lexus keeps pushing their infotainment that the majority of people complain about. I don't understand why they're just now rolling out apple carplay and Android auto, people clearly wanted it for a long time. Lexus is still the best, and I'd never buy anything that wasn't a Toyota or Lexus, but they've slacked off on a few things and really let a few models show their age.

    • @RPGTKingpin
      @RPGTKingpin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Elementaliti To address your questions, the lack of Carplay or Android Auto in the GX is due to how the modules containing those features are shaped. Apparently it's built into the radio/nav module and the simple fact is that they can't get the Android Auto/Carplay module to fit in the GX's dash. So most likely we won't be seeing it until the redesign a few years from now. As for why Lexus as a whole has taken so long with Carplay and Android Auto, apparently it has to do with the parent companies of those features. I remember reading an auto enthusiast article on the matter and apparently it boils down to the fact that those apps collect personal information without the user's knowledge, which constitutes a privacy breach that Lexus was unwilling to tolerate. Recently they've come to an agreement that revises how the two applications collect data, in such a way that it no longer breaches Lexus's requirements. That agreement got those applications approved for installation in Lexus vehicles, which is why they're now showing up in most of the line up.

    • @Elementaliti

      @@RPGTKingpin okay I understand the privacy concerns but Lexus should know that most Americans are too stupid to even pay attention to that. It only hurts the brand image by denying their consumers something they want even IF they're too stupid to understand that they shouldn't want it.
