Just said goodbye to my beloved 2005 GX470. I never had a moment of regret, even though she was the most expensive purchase I ever made (besides my house). After 17 years and 200k miles, my "tank in a tuxedo" was worth every penny. Kept up with all the Lexus-recommended service and she never failed me - can't praise this chariot enough! Sure-footed on ice, snow, wet roads, and even on the beach when other trucks got stuck in the sand. Awaiting delivery of my 2022 Lexus GX460 - I'm confident I can look forward to another long & dependable life with the best SUV in its class. Oh - and I call the incredible visibility inside the GX the "greenhouse view" - virtually non-existent blindspots. Thanks for a great video review!
I also have a 2005 Lexus GX470 (with 255 k miles) that I’m ready to replace with either a 2022 or 2023 GX 460. I’m almost tempted to just go with the RX450h, but every time I drive my GX470, especially this weekend over snow in Ohio, and every time I drive on the interstate highways, I am convinced that the space, comfort and the sense of road safety are worth the extra fuel cost! What I noticed that was missing in this review is the “heads-up” display. Should I wait to see what the 6-cylinder 2023 GX460 has to offer?
@@mfccincinnati2934 wastegate issues with Tundra turbo for 22. One vehicle only had 300 miles on the clock. That why I jumped on the 460 luxury for 2022...last of the 4.6 n/a engine. I had a turbo in 02, never again.
Good review. I can't believe we bought a 2023 GX 460 without doing much research at all, but after looking at a bunch of reviews, it just might be one of the smartest car purchases ever. We have had ours for just a couple of weeks and LOVE it. Can't wait for our annual summer Colorado trip where we plan to do some moderate off-roading. I do have a couple of comments: 1. The 0-60 acceleration on something like this doesn't matter nearly as much as it does with my Corvette. Acceleration from, say, 20 to 70 as you are getting on the freeway DOES matter, and the GX does fine. 2. The larger compartment in the rear door is to hold the front license plate bracket - something I won't be using. In a lot of jurisdictions like mine, although the law says you must have a front plate, the po-po can't use it as Probable Cause to pull you over.
Just put an order in for one. Going to be 4-5 months wait though. These get a lot of flack for being old, but I'd MUCH rather have this than a brand new Land Rover that breaks down on me all the time. I don't mind spending money on things that work, and work for a long time.
Old, but proven reliability. The older I get, the more I appreciate it. Great choice on the order - my wife has a 22 onyx blackline that we ordered months in advance. Well worth the price and wait!
Awesome review. You did a good job hitting the highs and lows without a lot of pandering like some of the *other* reviewers. I suddenly find myself in the market for a vehicle like this very unexpectedly, and your information has helped me a lot. Thank you very much!
We were planning to get the 2022 RX, but we test drove the 2022 GX and loved it. Put a deposit for a black line edition. I hope to get it in a month or two. Great detailed review. You have done a great job on this review not sure why anyone would give "not like" this video
Better off with the GX, because it's a powerful V8 that has the body on frame like a truck, but with the best suspension on the planet. Lexus GX, LX, or Toyota Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tundra and 4 runners, don't feel like a truck, but they are and they do it smooth and very much capable. The GX will handle any road lacking asphalt or concrete, and you will find them in deserts, plains, mountains all over Earth. You have a very capable vehicle in that GX, enjoy it, and Congrats.
We got a 2021 GX that lives off road. They are Landcruiser Prados. Real full-time 4WD and a locking cenyer diff atrac and kdss. This thing is an offroad king... and on road the true full-time 4WD makes it super safe too. The lux is great, quiet. Reliability is tank-like. No other one this reliable in it's class..
This ride is now on my short list. Good video and you demonstrated all fields of interest. I currently have a 24.5 year old early 1998 ES 300 with 59,000 original miles. (I own a few other toys, hence the low miles) It has always been dealer serviced and was always on time for maintenance. It obviously owes me nothing. Lexus is a rock solid company. I learned a long time ago, it only cost a bit more to go first class. The Gx will sure be a lot easier than my Porsche to get in and out of. Again, something that has a strong appeal for myself. Thanks.
Wonderful review. My dad had a 67 Lincoln Continental, It had auto dimming high beams. Glad to see they are making a comeback. I have a 2011 LS 460 and it has 5 tire pressure readings on the display that include the spare, just FYI.
Own 2021 rx 450h fully loaded. And just got a 2022GX 460 ff(sports package). While both look great I would say matt finish is the best. All my friends and family admire its presence. Even during dinner and barbecue. While rx poster (4x6ft) is in the living room, I have got the gx poster(also 4x6ft)in the dining room. So the gas guzzler can be fed as and when needed. Love them both!
Great review! We just took delivery of our white 2022 GX Premium (black interior - have a 7 year old son who will destroy anything white) this past Sunday at MSRP. Salesman threw in free weather mats since we're returning customers. I guess that's about the only discount you get these days lol. This is our first GX (2010 RX350 owners for 8 years) and it's so nice to have the #1 reliability rated SUV in the market. Looking forward to many many trips with this beauty of a truck in the years to come.
Awesome SUV! Congrats! Also, MSRP is considered a really good deal right now haha. I know most luxury brands are going for thousands over so well done!
@@goldpony Our dealership here in northeast FL has a company policy to not charge over MSRP as others have. They also will only sell to those that live within 175 mile radius of Jacksonville, FL in this current crazy market. Keeps us loyal for sure.
Great review. This is my dream truck in the configuration I would order it. I plan on purchasing in the next 3 years. Currently saving for this. It will be an liability expenditure but should last at least 300k easy and couple of decades with proper maintainence.
You'll never get anywhere near 300k from a turbo. My 22 luxury is on the boat now for Jacksonville. I'll take the final year n/a v8 in a heartbeat. Had a turbo in 02 ..... never again
Just got ours in Nori Green on Saturday it’s eclectic in places but the type of person buying this SUV realizes your buying a vehicle that has serious off road ability and the reliability of a Toyota/Lexus product. I’m glad they updated the Infotainment and now the mirrors fold. The Black Line Edition is the one to get. Not heavily optioned comes in at 61-62k which is in the same territory as TRD Pro 4Runner or a Jeep Wrangler believe it or not both are almost 60k only nicer and with a V8. with a mild lift and a stealth bumper and sliders and it’ll go anywhere and comfortably.
Nice my mom just got this car it’s really good it has good fuel storage and it doesn’t scratch easily it’s also very safe and the tech is amazing! It has a damn tv u can connect with anything
@16:21 Illuminated door sills are NOT included on the Blackline trim. It is listed as a feature in the brochure but Lexus did not put them on the Blackline. Will Lexus make it right? I don't think so but I'm not going to return my GX over it.
Great review…was curious about the headlights and driving at night. We have noticed a blue tint, almost like a lane indicator feature when driving. It appears to light up the white lines in blue. Was curious if you have experienced the same thing? Our local dealer has no answer to what this may be, a defect or feature.
Which leveling kit did you install, and how much did it affect the overall ride quality? I have read that spacers result in a rougher ride, did you experience this?
Don't do it! It's a nightmare. Had a light interior in my LC 500 Convertible. It was a disaster! Lesson learned. Got the red interior with the white exterior on my 22 GX460.
Have a 2018 and so enjoy the look and reliability but the navagation/ entertainment really stinks. Am hoping the 22 will live up to the hype that Lexus can deliver!
What about cam with 360° view around the car which Nissan, Mitsubishi or even Chrysler Pacifica have? Is it available for any Lexus model? And thanks for the video!
Yes, panoramic view monitor with multi-turrain monitor. $800. I had to get this if I wanted the Mark Levinson premium radio at $1145. My 460 Luxury is arriving at the end of the month.
Thanks for the review. Just convinced me to hang on to my 2015 GX460 as this is not much of an upgrade. Just a bigger navigation screen (does it even sync with Android or iPhone like my 2020 ES 350?), pre collision system with pedestrian alert, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control, not enough to convince me to trade up into this. Same performance, same range even after 7 years. Besides, that grill reminds me of french fries pointing up on a deep fryer- repulsive but that's my opinion. My daughter's Hyundai Tucson had all of these upgrades 2 years ago. I still have my 2006 GX 470 (95k miles) which I use as a hauler and on a straight 0-7s drag race it still beats a GX 460.
Maybe if they get rid of the touch pad controller they can put a wireless charge pad there, but there may not be enough space. I know they just put gen 11 infotainment in, but maybe they can update it to the new Lexus interface that's in the nx. Also, you're supposed to put snacks in the back door compartment!
Nicely done. My ‘14 GX has been awesome for me. By the way, mine came with a first aid kit in the rear door. Really really like the n/a V-8. I put the Magnaflow Overland exhaust system on mine last year and am very happy with sound and the “feel” of the truck during acceleration, such as merging etc... Not sure how a TTV-6 would sound or “feel” like in a truck that weighs as much as the GX. May have to purchase one of the last V-8 models even though mine only has a little over 106 k on the clock.
Do you recommend this car even with the rising gas prices? Was in the market for an SUV and was in between this the RX450h and this GX460. Which would you chose and why?
generally car is fantastic but only two huge critical deal-breakers are missing in this car: those are: 1. no diesel option. 2. no pano-roof option. the fuel consumption on this car like on tank like 50-liters in the city per 100km same as 5-mpg in real world. you have to be a gas-station owner.
Mpg is quite same like any other big heavy trucks and SUV’s. Besides you get Smooth V8. Another couple years and you will not see any v8 in any vehicle except performance overpriced ones.
I would say QC is one issue. The 460 has a stellar reputation for years, whereas BMW has suffered in recent years. My next door neighbor finally gave up on them after horrific breakdowns. The second issue is cost, which isn't always going to buy you better quality. The GX has a very high resale/trade value, and is by far less expensive to maintain than a BMW. Third is that I doubt the BMW has comparable off-road capabilities, especially regarding all the traction control. The new 600 is the one with the turbo V6, but is priced waaay up there and has a long wait period. 2023 is the last year the GX will come with a normally-aspirated V8, which will last a lot longer and any turbo engine.
@@Peter-ok9bj I think there are basically three trim levels of the GX 460. The "Blackline" that some reviewers show was a limited edition and virtually unavailable. We got the middle "Premium" package plus some other options like heated wheel, trailer hitch receiver, etc. The more $$ version was about $9k more and had the fancy camera stuff that we won't need since this is a third car for the two of us. Since it's black, I had it ceramic coated, which is essential for maintaining your sanity on wash day. It drives like a dream, very smooth and quiet.
@@brianmcgauley2664 I think the premium is the way to go. I had a black car years ago and I made the owner of the car wash a rich man. I had to wash it every couple of days. The only thing that has turned me off about the GX is the rear door. I live in NYC and if you park on the streets you can open it. Been hoping for years they will change that. Great idea about the ceramic coating.
@@Peter-ok9bj I understand about the rear door with parallel parking. Being the last year of this generation, it’s not going to change until the ‘24 model is announced June 8. From what I’ve seen, the rear door will be hinged on top with the new generation. However, the manual side hinge works for those of us that have small garages or for short folks who can’t reach that high, and it’s not electric. The ‘23 GX does have the pop-open rear glass though.
There is remote start using the Lexus phone app. Same app has a vehicle locator function if you forgot where you parked. The 360 view camera only comes on the Luxury and is not available as an option on any other trim level.
I suspect the 2023 GX will be redesigned and have a high strung V6 like the LX and Tundra have after the 2022 redesign. That's why I bought the 22 GX. Sales wise Lexus doesn't need to update the GX, 2022 has been a record sales years for it.
@@nightdipper5178 I don’t think they refresh the interior for just 1 year.. maybe in 2 or 3 years the redesign will come… the 4Runner should be next in line..
Two points I wanted to know, you show yourself in the back seat showing leg room, not showing yourself in the drivers spot FAIL, one of things I do not like about my GX 470 the seats are too small for someone over 6 foot tall. Second I am sorry if I missed it what is the mpg? my GX 470 gets 12 mpg.
@@microtransactions2661 Well I certainly didn’t mention wanting a luxury car, did I? Only cars with good rear visibility. And yeah, premium fuel for a car that already has lousy gas mileage is something to think about, unless someone doesn’t care. (There are, of course, vehicles that are not gas guzzlers and use premium fuel. I’m not referring to them.)
My 2023 does not have the remote start on the fob, but it is on the iPhone app. When you open the door, the engine will shut off for anti-theft reasons, FYI.
I upgraded my RX360L premium to GX 460 premium. Honest to say that i had gave up alot.of goodies from a RX can do compared to a Gx. It does feel luxury more than RX. But my 2018 Rx has more to offer for example the trunk door open and close button, hold brake , vibration on wheel. Variety of things on the deck itself. So much more than the new Gx. I miss my Rx but we need a bigger car for my 3 kids.
@@goldpony my GX came with a little Lexus first aid kit in that right back compartment. I assumed all came with it, although it may be because mine is a 2015….
Great review as always. The Toyota 4Runner Limited is much better looking, a little larger, and has more options. It also has even better resale value than the GX. Both great vehicles.
Love everything about this vehicle but I just can't get past that tailgate side swing thing. Move on Lexus it has to be changed. You're killing an otherwise awesome vehicle.
From my experiences. I don’t have any problems at all with the rear door swings open on GX. IMO It’s quick and easier to load any things and don’t have to back up and wait for the door slowly lifted up. I live in Texas so no problems whatsoever for parking spaces to open swing back door. Kind of like it!
Since this is iconic off-road SUV is there any comments for revised dashboard for low and high 4 WD controls, differential locking in dept, or you guys so unprofessional not to include that.
personal choice on what does or does not make sense ... it may not for you, I just picked up a 22 GX 460, because my knees just don't like getting into my 21 LC 500 Convertible and my 19 GSF (They are both too low for me)...You don't get any of the three of those vehicles regardless of price of gas if the fuel economy of any of them (all NA V8s) is a concern
I see your point, but it depends.... Prices have come down...some. It's dual-capability as a comfy tourer and an off-roader is what attracted us. Depreciation is the hidden BIG cost of any car, and this one has great resale value.
I current own a 5th gen 4runner and a GX460, the 4R isn't in the same league as the GX not even close. The only advantage the 4R has is that it is more capable off road from the factory and only because of the approach departure angle. I like both SUV's and will keep both but the 4R really can't be compared to the GX. Currently the cost of the 4R can run up to the 50K region fast and at that point the 60K GX is the way to go, IMHO.
It’s a real SUV not like many that are called SUVS but are really crossovers. And perhaps one of very few that have this level of comfort and reliability. If you prefer crossovers I respect and understand that
@@ibrahimaamer267 I respect that, I just get tired of reading about it's reliability with no context. They fact that it's old and relies on outdated technology is never mentioned. The new LX600 has finally moved that dinosaur into the modern era.
Toyota/Lexus may build the most reliable vehicles on earth, but they are ugly. Neither the exteriors or interiors are any good. They need to hire (poach) the designers from Audi or BMW (they make the most aesthetically pleasing vehicles).

Do you recommend this car even with the rising gas prices?
Was in the market for an SUV and was in between this the RX450h and this GX460.
Which would you chose and why?
Any off-roading is what the GX was designed for. 91 octane recommended, though. Has full size spare, which is essential IMHO.
Does 2022 GX still use the Foot brake ?I mean does it have any auto hold function?
Foot brake, yes. No auto hold.
generally car is fantastic but only two huge critical deal-breakers are missing in this car: those are: 1. no diesel option. 2. no pano-roof option. the fuel consumption on this car like on tank like 50-liters in the city per 100km same as 5-mpg in real world. you have to be a gas-station owner.
You definitely don't know a thing before commenting....
Mpg is quite same like any other big heavy trucks and SUV’s. Besides you get Smooth V8. Another couple years and you will not see any v8 in any vehicle except performance overpriced ones.
Very good review! In your opinion: who wins - 2022 Lexus GX 460 or the Landrover Defender?
Hands down I’d say the GX wins hands down. Land Rover can’t spell nor do they know the definition of the word RELIABLE!! LOL
Can you do a comparison between the GX460 and the BMW X5?
I also thought the the 2022 GX460 was coming with a turbo V6
@@brianmcgauley2664 Which Gx460 would you recommend? And how is the drive on pavement. I have no plans on going off roading.
The range of the GX460 isn't any where close to 400 miles. It's in the low to mid 300. I'll be lucky of I get a 340 mile range in my 18
I'll like to get this in 2023, I'll just add wheels, tires, and tinted windows. Done for me.
A great review, I just got GX 2021 ext Black (Neubula) with Red interior, I should've gotten the the Green/ red.
Awesome SUV either way! Congrats!
why do they put that graphic up there keeping viewers from being the interior fully
Is there. Remote start and around view camera ?
There is remote start using the Lexus phone app. Same app has a vehicle locator function if you forgot where you parked. The 360 view camera only comes on the Luxury and is not available as an option on any other trim level.
Remote start is included on any trim. Press unlock, unlock and hold unlock for 3 seconds.
Hope this v8 stick around another 5 years
I suspect the 2023 GX will be redesigned and have a high strung V6 like the LX and Tundra have after the 2022 redesign.
Bro you have to do the 2022 Toyota tundra 👍
I most definitely 100% will be doing that one! :-)
Wastegate issues already on the turbo. Only 300 miles on one Tundra.
I am always looking for vehicles with good rear visibility. Impressed with this one….But…premium fuel only?
Never understand people that want luxury cars but turn their nose up at having to pay for premium fuel.
Dies it have remote start function?
yes, via the FOB (hit twice to lock and then hold on the 3rd) or via the app
My 2023 does not have the remote start on the fob, but it is on the iPhone app. When you open the door, the engine will shut off for anti-theft reasons, FYI.

Didnt work
Price tag
Does it have 360 view
Only on the Luxury trim (option)
love GX 460!
Pulling trigger tomorrow thanks
Did you get it?
Yes put down deposit 👍🏾it’s still on the boat lol can’t wait 😜 got the red seats and white exterior
And thanks again 🤙🏽
@@augustrusso5413 got the same thing drive from ct to Florida just to pick it up I love it!
Yes I am so excited !!!!!😎
very nice video
Thanks!
That’s my car! I love it!
How much did you paid for
I upgraded my RX360L premium to GX 460 premium.
460 mpg on one tank?
Not in this dimension or life!
Does it have sport and eco mode?
Yes
Again nothing major was changed ,
New screen 📺 And whats under screen. But recently 1378lb was in my gx 2021 cargo, the best!
I love this car and it's my future dream car in Africa in the next 1⅔year.
That right compartment on back lift gate for umbrella perhaps? Lol
We will go with that then! 🤣
🙄🙄🙄
... said nobody EVER
Love everything about this vehicle but I just can't get past that tailgate side swing thing. Move on Lexus it has to be changed. You're killing an otherwise awesome vehicle.
It’s perfectly fine get over it
From my experiences. I don’t have any problems at all with the rear door swings open on GX. IMO It’s quick and easier to load any things and don’t have to back up and wait for the door slowly lifted up. I live in Texas so no problems whatsoever for parking spaces to open swing back door. Kind of like it!
Sasquatch of a window is a saying. I use it all the time 😝
I'm southern and I just love your accent lol. You say the word Pony much differently than we do 😅
Lol 😆
The best is your Elentra
Impressive for it's size, the NX plug-in is more my style.
Still no have apple car play
2022 GX has both Apple car play and Android Auto
I hate how outdated the rear looks
Since this is iconic off-road SUV is there any comments for revised dashboard for low and high 4 WD controls, differential locking in dept, or you guys so unprofessional not to include that.

Great. Love
I love 💕 Lexus
Nice vehicle but all Lexus vehicles look like they have a giant beak which turns me off. I hate giant plastic bumpers
I don’t understand Lexus, I have a 2014 is250 F sports and it has a full digital speedometer gauge.
I honestly hate those but to each his own, its just one more thing that will break.
I was hoping that Lexus would come out with a killer blue paint. Please Please get rid of that Burple color.
Nice car but let’s be real it is overvalued.
Poor fuel economy and stiff ride when I tested it.
I thought this body style had the ugly clear lens taillights???
Changed it for the 2022 model.
Only the sport models get the red ones
Dunlop tires on a luxury suv? really?? give me a couple grand off then since I'll replace them around 15k miles
With the current gas prices, this car doesn't make any sense.
personal choice on what does or does not make sense ... it may not for you, I just picked up a 22 GX 460, because my knees just don't like getting into my 21 LC 500 Convertible and my 19 GSF (They are both too low for me)...You don't get any of the three of those vehicles regardless of price of gas if the fuel economy of any of them (all NA V8s) is a concern
I see your point, but it depends.... Prices have come down...some. It's dual-capability as a comfy tourer and an off-roader is what attracted us. Depreciation is the hidden BIG cost of any car, and this one has great resale value.
4Runner is better with cheaper sticker price.
Traded up from my 2016 T4R Limited. This is in a different galaxy.
I have 2015 GX, its very reliable workhorse, but acceleration, handling, infotainment and cornering of body of frame vehicle is very bad.
“…so that’s pretty darn cool” about thirty times. Try to eliminate that verbal tic, it detracts from your message.
Сделано в России!!!
Yeah most reliable because it's one of if not the oldest most outdated SUVs around.
Here have these 🍇
It’s a real SUV not like many that are called SUVS but are really crossovers.
It is uggly from backside it is like Pajero & Prado, I hope if they make it better look
Toyota/Lexus may build the most reliable vehicles on earth, but they are ugly. Neither the exteriors or interiors are any good. They need to hire (poach) the designers from Audi or BMW (they make the most aesthetically pleasing vehicles).
